To all the people who comment about the colors you were seeing these in white light for filming. The stage lighting has colors and changes throughout the different acts so the costumes will look entirely different under stage lighting. Trust me you will Wowed when you see them in performance.
yes that would be most interesting ... I think a lot of the costumes are drycleaned or hand washed gently as they simply wouldn't last in any rough machine.
Such intricate work. Very lovely. Hours must have gone into this. The ballerina is gorgeous and very honest and expressive. Thank you for this very beautiful bit of the ballet.
Mal Barton has such a soothing voice and her accent is so beautiful. I love the detailed descriptions of the costumes. It's fascinating. The dancers are so charming. It is amazing how the costumes are made. Tutus are a work of art. I would love to know how they are laundered and how often.
Beautifully designed costume for the Lilac Fairy. It was fascinating to hear from the costume maker about the challenges in constructing the tutu. Also wonderful was to hear about the needs of the dancer for the costume so that it can be moved in easily and also be comfortable to wear. It's not often so many different viewpoints are put forward. Well done Royal Ballet!
Can you please make more videos like this? I love this video and I watch it over and over because I love being able to have an inside look into these beautiful costumes and I want to see similar videos about costumes from other ballets
I don´t like the leaves on the bodice; they look a bit cheap when looking closely, but I supose it´s not necessary to have Haute Couture finishings there. Anyways from far away they look good and thats enough.
i think its beautifully made but im not a big fan of the hot pinks being used with the dark lilacs and then also the green, and the white all throught this true lavender/lilac colour story. also the leaves arent my favourite placement either although i do love the idea of them. of course its beautifully made and i obviously couldnt do better but i feel like the pallette doesnt make sense, like maybe the pink skirt should have been a dark purple, or the purple from underneith or something very pastel pink, and the leaves down the bodice should have been more vertical imo. it just feels very distant and mish mashed, not coherant even imo
I'm always impressed by the intricate and complex designs that go into performing arts like this. When they say "Lilac Fairy," they make a Lilac Fairy costume. LOL I also love that they go with different types of lilac and shading, to emphasize the character more. I love the different lilacs on top of the leaves, very reminiscent of nature as well, as a fairy ought to be. :)
Not a popular opinion here but I really like this costume. It has many aspects of costuming all rolled into one. Function, aesthetic, the beauty and practicality issues that had to be contested, all culminating in this dress is just amazing.
I imagine that the reason the Royal Ballet uses these certain bright pinks and magentas in the tutu that seem to sort of "clash" from close up is because, of course, the audience will see the ballerina from quite a far distance, and so the colors will probably be much more soft and muted. The stage lighting also plays a huge part in showing off the colors. I have never actually seen a performance of the Sleeping Beauty in person myself, but l think that from the audience, with the distance and the lighting. I do agree the costume colors and design are not the most attractive from up close, but l think one of the reasons the Royal Ballet changed the design for the Lilac Fairy tutu was that the original design, the one that Marianela Nunez wore in a TH-cam video would have been too muted from the stage as it was made with a very soft lilac color that probably wouldn't stand out enough from the audience. Again, l have never seen a performance in person, so if any of you has, tell me what you think!
Don't like the reddish lower layer. Why isn't the whole costume lilac, like the underside? We want glittering lilac---the color. To me the Lilac Fairy refers to a color, not so much the flower. But it is a beautiful costume. Similarly, no one ever makes the Sugar Plum Fairy's costume in the light plum color of an actual frosted Christmas sugar plum.
you need to have more than JUST lilac to look good on stage. it's like a monotone film, you need the lights and darks for it to work right? Same with this.
No, the fairy's name definitely refers to the flower. Petipa called her "la Feé des lilas" because of the flower's significance in Russian folklore. The original tutu was pale and decorated with lots of lilac flowers in different shades of pink and purple.
How is the bodice attached? I have seen tutus where they are separate and connected with elastic and buttons and ways where the bodice is sewn on. Which is the correct way?
To be honest, their costumes left much to be desired. Nothing really looked polished or complementary to the ballet. The costumes that were in the 1990's production were way better.
this is dumb but a bit before 1:20 does she call that flower scarlet? im an art major and like.....that isn't scarlet? neither is the redder part of the tutu underneath but the flower isn't even CLOSE
I would think that a company such as Dior would sponsor costumes. If I had a company, that would be an effort for sure. It's important, I think, for accomplished Couture and Bespoke enabled brands to sponsor the arts, such as theater, as a way of giving further to the evolution of fashion into that sector. The costumes are great, but I just envision them to be so much better for future generation wearers. With the evolution of fabrics, there is surely a way of translating a museum quality couture look onto a more performance-wearable theater creation. Doing so would elevate the sales, standard of venues, and marketability through a "COMING SOON" local exhibit. Also, this type of exhibit would raise the anticipation of said theater event to a greater level! This, I believe is the future that fashion should be offering theater productions. It's a WIN WIN!! I'm KEVIN NAPIER, and that's MY 2 CENTS!
I'm always a bit disappointed with this tutu as it is a sort of magenta pink not mauve. I like my Lilac Fairies to be mauve with green leaves! Yes I do know you can get lilac in that shade of pink but it doesn't feel right.
There are totally different costumes used these days for The Sleepign beauty. The earlier ones were less than a decade old. What has become of them...they were so beautiful? In the scrap heap?
'' do you make this for a living so do you have a website that I can go to and purchase this or to make something close to it please let me know" And if you don't make this please call me and let me know and if you do know someone who doesn't like these please let me know.
This might get me in hot water, but I don’t like this version of the lilac fairy. I think it looks a bit tacky? Not in construction but the leaves make it look kind of graceless
The colours don’t go together, you should have used different shades of purple and silver,no leaves to those cheap looking flowers, use hot stones for the tutu, and a dark shade of purple for the top,and may be a type of tiara, with lots of gems, and for the sleeves, lose them and put a flower sleeve, thicker, just two lines of lilac lilacs for hair you could add flowers intertwined with a braid-bun(a bun with braids that come form the hair line)if you don’t put a tiara
Her voice is so calming☺️
IKR!
that´ts a beautiful way to speak english these people have.
the British dancer has a "Bloody" awful accent.
Viera Eterovic ??????
Paulph Evans 😂😂

"Hopefully they survive the laundry". Never mind the hot stones, I need to see a video on how the heck they launder costumes like this one!
yes that would be most interesting ... I think a lot of the costumes are drycleaned or hand washed gently as they simply wouldn't last in any rough machine.

More like days
So mesmerizing.....beautiful all the hard work that goes behind the costumes. They're so gorgeous and definitely tell a story.
I love ballet costumes, they're like a fairy tale!
even the tutu underneath is beautiful!

not my fav either, expected something more feminine
PPEB when you are on stage it looks really nice acctually
I think the dress is beautiful, and the leaves give a nice vintage look to it.
Looking good from far away is sort of the goal, no?
Thanks so much for posting this sort of material - I love this kind of behind-the-scenes stuff for ballet!!
i think its beautifully made but im not a big fan of the hot pinks being used with the dark lilacs and then also the green, and the white all throught this true lavender/lilac colour story. also the leaves arent my favourite placement either although i do love the idea of them. of course its beautifully made and i obviously couldnt do better but i feel like the pallette doesnt make sense, like maybe the pink skirt should have been a dark purple, or the purple from underneith or something very pastel pink, and the leaves down the bodice should have been more vertical imo. it just feels very distant and mish mashed, not coherant even imo
agreed, the lilac underneath would've been fine without the pink on top. It is the Lilac Fairy after all!
agreed!
It looks very different with stage lighting trust me

The costume is absolutely magic✨

I love love love seeing this beautiful creation. It too is art just like ballet.
Thankyou!
ダンサーの踊りもそうだけど,衣装とか,照明とかもあってダンサーがより輝くと思う✨
So prettyyyyyyy 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Alexandra Avery fur sure
I learned from my mom, who made my sister’s dance costumes, hot stones never stay on for long.
What a gorgeous costume!
So pretty!!!!!
This is borderline asmr 😊
yas
There are good motifs and lace that can be used for ballet clothes in the site
Stunning costume.
such delicate work... love!
1:00 beautiful but that is no where near scarlet
lol yeah
i love these pieces on the costumes. they are wonderful!

I love Claires figure.
Don't know about you lot but I love the sound of Mel's voice

Beautiful.
These costumes are beautiful

Kind of obsessed with the way she says tutu
I wish you would use or incorporate the costumes from the 1978? production. The baroque feel of the costumes truly fits the theme of the ballet...
klein bryn frande They changed the costumes to commemorate the original production of 1946
Fabulously
beautiful costume beautiful ballerina wow
Wow nice lovely god job
any of my recent tutus jazz or ballet have had about five or six layers
The material she calls net - is that hard tulle?
Moe -Chan looks like it

Agreed
:/
yeah
this is dumb but a bit before 1:20 does she call that flower scarlet? im an art major and like.....that isn't scarlet? neither is the redder part of the tutu underneath but the flower isn't even CLOSE
Yep scarlet
Not the best lilac fairy costume I've ever seen
I found a new ASMR video!
Why does the thumbnail look like a satellite map of new jersey
The way she kept saying “yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,”
Lilac fairy's tutu.
Viera eterovic I know !!!!!

it is a beautiful costume, but i did prefer marianela's
I think it's kind of gaudy and cheap looking. maybe it needs to project or something.
This might get me in hot water, but I don’t like this version of the lilac fairy. I think it looks a bit tacky? Not in construction but the leaves make it look kind of graceless
is it wrong for a male ballet dancer to play a female role ?
oufc29 no
The gal pronounced "r" as "w" striking= stwiking! lol
It's an accent
Yolo
Moon tailors
Ladis gents
Plzzzzzzz Job
🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃
I do ballet
this was made to very skinny girl!
try doing ballet, you'll find that it's quite impossible to not be skinny
Bar Minchaca Well the ballet industry does require petite girls, the Bolshoi actually has weight requirements for aspiring dancers.
The dancer's probably skinny????
You’re right, Dancing burns a lot more calories than you’d think 😂
You show me a chubby ballerina and I'll show you my pet unicorn! 😊

Lot of work and design.. Not keen on the decoration on this one..
hmmm, I liked Marianela's costume much more than this one..
She keeps repeating herself, annoying.
actualy it looks cheap and ugly
yeah
