Can’t get over how exquisite these costumes are, what a treat to see them up close with all of the details. The Balanchine cameo was my favorite little secret revealed.
Imagine if Karinska could see how her work is still revered and adored today - how carefully so many people preserve her vision, because they believe that what she did is the superlative costume for this iconic ballet. There's a kind of magic in that. Her dream lives on in every performance.
I didn’t think I’d watch the whole thing, and now I’m hoping you bring him back to talk about other productions. This is fantastic to listen to. There’s a lot here to still learn about. Please do more of this!
Marzipan's colors make me want to paint my bedroom that color. 😂 That sunny yellow with sugar pink stripes...! It's so whimsical and cheerful! (and then the green and pink of Sugar Plum's other costume...I love both of them so much!)
Kathryn Morgan’s deconstruction of the scenes are all worth a watch to better understand the dancing. I’m so glad to get the insights into the costuming.
Wonderful how George Balanchine honours the work of Karinska! There was a similar, and just as successful, artistic relationship between John Cranko and Jürgen Rose. Costume designers deserve that kind of respect and gratitude! If they do theirLike job like Karinska and Rose they do bring the characters to life fully on stage!
when I was a child, somebody gave me a copy of A Very Young Dancer by Jill Krementz. Written in the 70s, it told the story of the Balanchine Nutcracker production, with special attention paid to the costumes. it was a book I enjoyed looking at over and over. Now seeing this video, it shows that the New York Cty Ballet is committed to this version of the Nutcracker and its iconic costumes. The book was all in black-and-white, so when I watched this video, it was really exciting to see the costumes in full color! The only thing I wish was included was Mother Ginger’s enormous costume! Maybe next year?? Thank you so much for putting this out!
Absolutely loved this. I like that a wide variety of costumes were shown and the camera work was high quality, so I was able to pause and admire all of the sparkles and embellishments!
this was astoundingly inspiring, i’m a recent fashion grad and i am very seriously contemplating costuming jobs now… the thought process, the colors, the characters, all so amazing (attention to detail too!! the mirroring of the crystals in the tulle was ingenious)
So so beautiful!! Thank you for sharing all the details of the costume. Amazing to see what they look like up closer than we'd ever see from the audience.
So cool to see! These are all things I never got to learn during the production but love that I get to now learn so much about it. The details are so incredible. The illusion for angels too comes from learning how to "shuffle" and ensuring your hoop is as low to the ground as you can without it touching. I remember going up to the stage we always had to hold up the hoops to get on the elevator and be very careful with them but I loved being one.
The ‘93 filmed version is streaming on Disney + and these costumes still look incredible. I’m curious if any original parts have survived or if they have been entirely replaced like the Ship of Theseus.
@@justinedelgaudio1056 that is truly incredible and testimony to the original designer’s and costumers’ insane skills. I wonder what do they with the replaced segments. Might you know if they are studied or preserved for research by any chance?
I don't know about you but when I first looked at the Sugarplum tutu designs, it really reminded me of a bell tutu, which is weird cause one's romantic and the other one's classical. BTW the Mouse King's seven heads are probably among the most difficult parts to wear, sew, or even design in the first place; that's why most productions drop the concept.
I happen to be a seamstress, and I absolute absolutely adore Marie’s party dress. I want to make the dress, and would like to know where I can find that fabric and those other materials, please?
Funny! I was just thinking the same thing 🤣 couldn't justify those air miles though, even if I could afford it. Have always wanted to go to at Petersburg and see the ballet in their home theatre after years of seeing them in England. At least I could do that by rail.
The beauty is now there are books with the story, but also the music. Since our granddaughter is born we bought books that where interactive and the music getting along with the theme. This year we bought her two books, the Nutcracker and Swan lake. My two favorite ballets. It’s fun to have a daughter that values music in all it’s forms and tunes. I danced myself more as a hobby but our teacher was a former ballerina in Belgium and she was ademend that we would be like the ones in the Antwerp Ballet School. But i loved the drill of it. And even with my illness it gave me a good posture and even as a 56 year old still do some exercises to keep my joints flexible enough.
We just finished our Nutcracker performances and I wish we could do more shows because I love it so much. Our ballet studio is Balanchine style and we have a picture of him in the dancer's lounge. Also we have a running joke at the studio that every time one of the studio doors opens during class (the doors don't shut all the way) we say it's the ghost of Balanchine coming in to watch the class.
I really enjoyed the learning about history of the New York City Ballet's Nutcracker. The costumes are amazing! It was so interesting to learn about the construction and fabric. Thank for for such a lovely video :)
Imagine if the pink dress were modified to resemble Glinda's bubble dress from the movie? I understand Glinda's dress is longer, but it was designed to give illusions of floating by integrating the zfibbonsci spital sequence throughout. I think a remaining of the Nutcracker costumes to include subtext and substance that works with the story...which is most common in movies a d movie musicals. For example, Rlphabas's dresses are designed to reflect textures of moss and mushrooms, etc. The Wicked costumes made me wish ballet could take a chance like this. I presume, th8ught, that the costumes gets quite abused from pure wear and tear. The more the outfits can be segme Ted, so a skirt can be swapped out with another while it gets repaired and cleaned.
Those Chinese costumes are no longer used, because the Chinese Tea dance is now recognized as being highly racist. With the permission of the Balanchine Trust, the segment has been reimagined as a celebration of Chinese culture, led by a beatiful blue cricket.
Please forgive my ignorance in this question, and the rudeness of the question, but it appears the costume includes the underlying leotard. What do dancers wear for underwear, under their formal costumes? Man and woman... If the costumes are shared with others, I am presuming there is a layer of modesty garb, even for sanitation reasons.
We all understood her point about having to practice with the tutu on so the partner has a sense of how far away to stand. No one needed to see the costume designer standing BEHIND her where no one could see the length of his reach, illustrated nothing, and then we watch those creepy hands swiping at her abs not once but twice. Excuse to touch.
Please bring him back, this was a fascinating tour.
I want him to talk about alllllll the costumes he does for alllll and any show! He is made to be a magnificent costume designer.
The nycb channel has several videos talking about it's costumes
Can’t get over how exquisite these costumes are, what a treat to see them up close with all of the details. The Balanchine cameo was my favorite little secret revealed.
It's so beautiful how they match the tights to the skin tones, it really makes a difference

Fantastic that dancers' tights can now match skin color.
I can't decide what I love more... the Mouse King Head or all the amazing details on Marzipan!!

Desperately need more of this man
absolutely entranced. I loved listening to him talk about the construction of the outfits!

How extraordinary. I have seen the New York City Ballet's production of the Nutcracker Suite since 1970. Magical!
nutcracker was such a huge part of my childhood, I’m so glad to see kids are still enjoying it

I really appreciate how he describes them as athletes, because it shows such respect, and it changes how things have to be approached.
Thank you for allowing us behind the scenes all the artists from dancers to costume makers to shoe makers to set design is so magical
I didnt realize that Coffee had actual gold work! That's amazing that it's remade to keep it up!
Truly exquisite costumes

This was so fabulous! As a former ballerina and just lover of ballet, I so appreciate all of the details in the costumes.
I am the audience for this.

Grew up watching this every year. Lovely to see the details of the costumes from my memories.

the only truly original piece that remains today that hasn’t been rebuilt is the vest that tea wears ❤

I could cry, this is everything
Gorgeous costumes!

This was awesome! My daughter and I saw the Nutracker in NYC in 2014. We loved it. One day I hope to take my granddaughters.
NYCB nutcracker isn't my favorite BUT the NYCB costumes are by far the best (and the stage sets are the best with NYCB too)
Im the little girl who grew up watching this ballet, but it was vha tape by Disney. I loved it then and still do now!
Fabulous, intricate costumes
I could listen to this nice gentleman for hours. What a great video!!!
I happen to be a seamstress, and I absolute absolutely adore Marie’s party dress. I want to make the dress, and would like to know where I can find that fabric and those other materials, please?
All stunning - to see this would be my only excuse to go to America! The Dewdrop has to be my favourite.
Funny! I was just thinking the same thing 🤣 couldn't justify those air miles though, even if I could afford it. Have always wanted to go to at Petersburg and see the ballet in their home theatre after years of seeing them in England. At least I could do that by rail.
absolutely fascinating! please give us more of this!
the dew drop costume with the horsehair trim is so exquisite
While the Balanchine Nutcracker is not my favorite, I can't help but be in awe of all the behind-the-scenes artistry!

Nice of you to leave the door open for him.
Mirroring the crystals is brilliant.
Thank you Korinska for your costumes! So cool to all the makers and dyer and the tree 🎄 is one of my favorites! ❤
I really enjoyed the learning about history of the New York City Ballet's Nutcracker. The costumes are amazing! It was so interesting to learn about the construction and fabric. Thank for for such a lovely video :)
This was amazing!!! Thank you for the tour and the video
Super interesting, I had no idea how much goes into these costumes
I wish i could watch one of these videos for all the ballets. My 2 favourite things are ballet and sewing❤
Loved every second of this, so insightful and magical! 💖✨
Fabulous! Thank you! ❤❤❤
More interviews with this designer please!
I never got to work on any ballets, but using vodka for cleaning, that's a new one on me!
This is phenomenal! ❤
This was so interesting. Thank you.🕊🇺🇲💕
so beautiful and fascinating!
OMG: that hydra-headed Rat King is nightmare fuel! 🫣😱
Great interview!
That just made me want to see it even more so.
It was truly such a treat to see these beautiful costumes up close and hear some of what goes into them. Thank you for this video!
Wonderful!

delightful
So interesting
Does each ballet company design their own costumes?
Please continue to post content about your costuming!!!
i need that sugar plum fairy dress! where can i get something similar?
absolutely hate the AI voiceover
Can you spray these sweaty costumes with Frbreeze?
❤

What about the Arabic dance? Even the Spanish and Russian dances are stereotypical.
So may ballerinas were inspired by the Nutcracker as little toddlers.
At this point, I think it's worth it to have their own dry-cleaning machines, or dehumidifiers.
Raise your hand if Kathryn Morgan sent you here 🙋♀️
Is the mouse king something like a rat king?
ok amazing but why does the voice-over sound like ai?

he's unnecessarily touchy in the fitting

Of all the costumes you could have put in the thumbnail, WHY did you pick the ugliest one??
awww I love the marzipan costumes! the way they bounce is so whimsical and fun
