- In this video we're going to find out if it's possible to beat Doom without pressing the attack button.
Rules:
1. Play on Ultra-Violence.
2. Disallow shooting. Even at walls.
3. Disallow punching. Even in the air.
4. Allow monster infighting.
5. Beat episode 1, 2, and 3. Episode 4 is part of Ultimate Doom, which we're not covering.

If you are referring to the switch that opens up the central courtyard, that was added prior to Ultimate Doom, patch 1.5 or 1.666 I think. Romero wanted to make the map more deathmatch friendly, thus the change.

When I used to play Ultimate Doom, I always found something in the User Manual to be Damn Hilarious. Saying, "Have any demon or Imp get in the way of the one attacking you. And once they start killing each other just grab some Popcorn and let the poor jerks at each other." LOL!!! This is a good example of just how stupid the minions of Evil really are.

Thus the infighting started.

In early versions of Doom, if an enemy blew up a barrel and harmed itself, it would then try to kill itself. Only enemies with melee attacks would be successful.

Heh, I would've preferred the opposite: a longer form video where you follow along every step of the way. Partially because I'm not familiar with the Doom levels, partially because I prefer to read the book and not the plot summary.

In some games, if you take a tutorial video as simple and as quick as this it may be fine but not as helpful as it could've been if it was longer and more detailed. In some games on the other hand, if it's too long and too detailed it ruins the whole thing. So yeah, most of the time it's a hit or miss on TH-cam.

Disallowing shooting and punching even if they don't harm enemies are stringent conditions, and some of the Pacifist demos demonstrated here violate those rules. 4shockblast's E2M8 Pacifist demo, for instance, has him punching the air shortly after he blocks the Cyberdemon in order to wake up the Lost Soul in the central spawn chamber, voiding the challenge. Controlling when this Lost Soul is reawakened is an integral aspect of 4shockblast's method, and as no one else has yet to show a different manner of completing E2M8 Pacifist, shooting/punching the air is effectively required for this map.
Great observation, and yes, the no air-punching rule is quite excessive and too restrictive in retrospect. Some of the other demos I used also involved air-punching, but mostly at random and not necessarily strategic. I wasn't aware E2M8's punch was integral, honestly. I will most likely get rid of the rule for the episode 4, 5(?) and D2 videos. That way I don't have to prematurely end D2's challenge the moment I reach MAP18's beginning door. Thanks for the comment.
@@decino I don't think it's integral. It's probably possible to avoid, it just makes the run easier to complete because I can put the lost soul in a safe position from the cyber and then alert it when I manage to get the cyber stuck.
@@decino Being able to awaken monsters early and lead them away is a pretty big deal. Some areas maybe impossible without enemy positions changing. I would allow 4shocks video in this case because it's possible through RNG to make the lost soul complete the cycle, but a shortcut was taken for the sake of a video. It's a small arena map where enemy placement doesn't influence the overall strategy i.e. you can restart it over and over until you get this perfect rng or trigger it with the punch and get the same result.
For non-arena maps it's very easy to abuse a punch to set up a non-rng possible scenario, like punching to wake up a monster who then walks towards you and doesn't block your path around a tight corner he should be standing in. That's also why I would keep the rule, it creates an interesting situation which you can't "cheat" your way around by waking up enemies and leading them astray. What is, is and you're encountering it the same way every time instead of trying to find ways to exploit it.

Not DOOM or DOOM II but Final DOOM: TNT includes a map which you cannot finish without using a pistol to shoot a panel on the wall which activates some switch, IIRC. Not sure which map is it, probably around Map 15

This brings back memories. I went to University in 1993, bought a PC early 1994, someone gave me Doom on a floppy disk. You played it in DOS. A friend and I bought Doom 2 when it came out for £20 I think. Still got it. We played it solidly for the rest of my course and I've been addicted to FPS ever since. I never thought to try and get through the game without using any weapons but I had done it with chainsaw and pistol only. Both games on Ultra-violence. My PC at the time did not have a sound card. I can't remember what the sounds were now - I came here looking for a video - but it was just bleeps. I'd been playing for well over a year by the first time I heard it with a sound card. Scared the shite out of me.

Nice video, this type of content is pretty cool! I'm a huge fan of the pacifist category myself. Here's some details that were missed:
- The baron-to-baron infight on e1m8 is more complex than explained in the video. A monster destroying a barrel to damage another monster actually doesn't work. It has to damage the barrel first, then destroy it on the next shot, making that even more luck-dependent.
- There's a 135-unit void glide on e1m8; I do it in UV-Speed, but there's no reason it's not possible pacifist.
- The E2M6 void glide footage is almost certainly not Adam Williamson. He was most active in running well before the discovery of void glides (believe that is early 2010s?). It's probably xepop if it was taken from a pacifist run.
- E2M7 can be done much easier by just thing-boosting on an imp to the exit (the normal speed route uses an RJ, but that's not needed).
- You can easily skip one key on E3M4 by getting the second key using a keygrab.
Very interesting stuff! Good material if I ever decide to remake this video. Your demos are always a blast (hue) to watch, keep it up.

I know it’s not Doom 1, but Doom 2 Map 30 was TAS’d Pacifist by Zero Master thanks to arch viles. Insanity!
And Scythe map 30 Fire and Ice can be done too. The head doesn’t count as an enemy, but you can lure a lost soul down, hide behind it, and have it be destroyed.
Now do one where you beat the game by only talking to the monsters, lol.

After that fight, the Marine had become the new commander.
