  • Should I use treats to train my dog? Great question, dog training with treats is something we use as motivation every day at the Upstate Canine Academy. However, it's unrealistic, frustrating, and avoiding the actual problem of why your dog is reactive to other dogs. Sit back, relax and watch Tom Davis dissolve leash reactivity in 15 minutes.

      I know right,
I've been training my dog via his information my breed thats apparently a primitive breed that is stubourn and don't listen,
Which she didn't till I have been useing this advice
My dog defo has some better recall now compared to how she was I'm just trying so hard to get her to stop paying attention to everything else around her that nabs her interest,
she walks at my heel but, her head at times is looking behind her or to the side across the road,
(She really is a busy body )

This was originally a post to Tom in hopes he will see it but I think viewers here are under the wrong impression of what a positive trainer who gives GOOD advice can accomplish.
I have gone back and forth about commenting for a long time. You may wonder why I am here if I not only train in a different way , but do not use your methods nor ever try to. I do applaud you for your time and commitment to shelter dogs and rescue dogs. We may come from different training backgrounds and I certainly do not agree in the way you go about it at times, but I am all for saving dogs from euthanasia. The difference between you and I is, I am not constantly down playing or making a joke of the way you do things. I do not call what you do a lie. You say there is no such thing as “purely positive” and you are right, but the things a real positive based , force free trainer does such as covering up a treat if they lunge for it when teaching leave it, or closing a door if they get up from sitting position when teaching them not to dart out of doors is mild compared to a prong or e collar correction . I have trained several of my own dogs with problems they needed worked with and there was no need for e collar, slip lead, or prong. There are countless positive trainers or force free trainers who can be better advocates , as I do have experience with my own dogs, but I know others have even more experience. Such as Emily from Kikopup, Training Positive here on TH-cam, or even Freestyle Paws ( her videos are amazing and her dogs are trained through positive motivation techniques) . I have never used a prong, e collar, or slip lead and never plan on it. I do not need to physically correct a dog to train it. Try using a prong to teach agility and see where that gets you. Not far and certainly not going to allow the dog to reach full potential. The woman in your video is a beginner and does not know how to use positive based techniques properly. This is not her fault and I do applaud her for trying to help the dog.On top of that the advice she was given was poor and in no way shape or form reflects the advice a GOOD positive based trainer would give to someone. What you see here does the methods no justice because a knowledgeable positive trainer would know that distracting them in that way is not the proper way to go about things. We are all about getting to the root of the problem and allowing the dogs, through counter conditioning the opportunity to no longer feel the need to react, because their emotional response and thinking about the things they react to is being changed. Without a prong. Our goal is to get them to a point they never feel the need to go over threshold again. She most likely came across an inexperienced trainer who had no clue how to use positive methods properly either. This will certainly end up with poor results. This is not her fault, but the advice she was given does not reflect the advice a good positive trainer would give. Is Instances like this what you are basing the methods on? Beginner trainers given bad advice by someone whom has no clue how to train a dog regardless of method? I adopted a Labrador Pit bull mix whom was very reactive around other dogs and would lunge with hackles raised at other dogs when I first got him. He was out of control around other dogs. Knowing about Kikopup counter conditioning protocols , with patience , time , and commitment Emily helped me to help him become a dog who not only loves other dogs now, but can control himself around cats . Cats were his ultimate enemy. All I ask is to have an open mind and consider that maybe it is possible to train a dog this way. Why don’t you stop by and tell channel Kikopup that her training must be a lie or must be flawed or is a rarity for working? She has spent years successfully training dogs. Her dogs are calm, confident, and her puppies learn at lightening speed. Her own dogs settle calmly and perfectly while the others are being worked with. Her goal is to never let a dog get out of threshold again. She breaks things down into small achievable goals. Many of the dogs shown in her videos were once aggressive , but you would never know that now. She saves lives also, but countless people will naysay and mock her.
As for the shelter dogs, positive based trainers are not killing them. That is the biggest lie I have heard on this channel. Having volunteered at shelters before and knowing many who do, many of the dogs have had no training at all. That is the problem. Many people adopting dogs do not train their dogs using any methods at all. They simply either do not know or just do not wish to know how to fix and most importantly prevent problems from occurring. So please do not form opinions about these techniques when you have never seen someone who knows how to use them properly. You are right about one thing. There is such a thing as a bad positive trainer, but that does not mean the rest of us who know how should be be constantly frowned upon.Your videos make it clear what you think. If the examples on your videos are what your basing such a valuable way of training on, I can see why you have these thoughts.
I can think of some “balanced trainers” who are complete monsters. Jeff gellman being one. He should never be allowed to be around dogs let alone train them. He gives abuse names such as “bonking” (hanging a dog upside down and punching it in the nose). I can see right through his lies. What he does behind the backs of the owners is abuse. Knowing this is not what a balanced trainer usually looks like, I would never form opinions about ALL balanced trainers based on him. I do feel at times you often miss valuable moments in your training where reinforcing them more with praise, play, or food would have yielded great results. As a someone once said “ train for the moment not in the moment”. Counter conditioning can work wonders if given the chance, as can positive based if actually given opportunity. All this being said. I hope you do not feel as if I am attacking you. I am not , I just feel like someone here should point out things as I did. You are right “there are no bad dogs” ! Stay safe and take care!

    • @hollyjollybliss9950
      @hollyjollybliss9950 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I will post some examples of trainers successfully using positive based methods. Positive does not mean untrained dogs just to be clear. We get the dogs to the point where they mentally do not feel the need to react anymore. Or more importantly prevent these behaviors in the first place. The power of counter conditioning using motivational methods is far more beneficial than a prong used after the dog is already over threshold . You can not correct an emotional response simply mask it by causing the dog to temporarily quit trying. Well trained dogs trained without the use of physical corrections is not a rarity. It happens often but unfortunately many balanced trainers refuse to acknowledge it. Another lie is you have to have a fat dog if it’s trained using food rewards. Not true mine are perfect weight. I use their meals or part of their meals for training in non distracting environments but will use high value “small” bits of meat for distracting environments or for more important cues such as come and stay. Many myths surrounding such a useful way of training.

@@hollyjollybliss9950 I really mean no offense, but nobody is going to read your comment when it is that long.. I did read your comment, and I'm not sure if you understand the term "bonking" fully, I don't agree with it.. but that's a completely false explanation of what that method is. You came to a balanced training channel, hijacked my comment about how wonderful the owner is, and left a comment a mile long that likely nobody will engage enough to read. I suggest you maybe make some videos yourself to explain your ideology to get your points across in a more engaging and successful way. Cheers.

Please check out channel Kikopup, Training Positive (yellow lab Watson) , and Freestyle paws. They changed my dogs life forever and mine as well. Reactive and aggressive dogs benefit greatly from positive based methods when used by people who properly use them and know what they are doing. My dog was so reactive but Emily helped him. Her counter conditioning and training for the moment not In the moment helped sped up progress. It’s not a lie , there are many myths spread by balanced trainers about this useful and life saving way of training. Tom is right ignorance is a pet of life. Wish people would see both sides to the story instead of the opinions formed around things they have never seen used properly and what a GOOD positive trainer would do..

Your training has changed my dogs life! I have a 11 month old boxer puppy that was barking lunging on walks and so strong it was impossible to control him. I watched one of your videos where you were training a GSD and it reminded me of my dog. The prong collar made all the difference so I decided to try with mine! I can now walk my dog without issue. He’s happy and so am I. He has some fear aggression to strangers and has snapped at a few people. I have watched your videos on aggression and know they feed off of the owners energy. I can’t help but be nervous when anyone approached him or we have people over because of his history. I’m not sure exactly how to work through this since I am contributing to the problem, but I’m committed to doing what I can. Thank you for what you do.

i just started to work with my SIL’s reactive pittie mix and have been utilizing this type of drill. WOW!! her natural engagement is through the roof now that she has some structure and she’s been able to confidently heel past dogs lunging and barking at fences. she’s also a heavy weight gal but crazy sensitive to leash pressure, just wasn’t being walked on the right tools.

This is so helpful for me. I’ve had tension when my pup and I walk by dogs. So I know I’m the problem and challenge myself to trust my pup to make the right decisions.
    If not, then pop.

It never ceases to amaze me how much progress can to made with proper training and leadership. I thought with this dog you would use a Prong collar but it was interesting to see the progress with the Slip collar. Always great to see the dogs progress and the great weight lifted off the owners with the right tools. Appreciate you making these videos and helping your watchers learn proper dog handling techniques.

I was a child psychologist for forty years and often had to explain to parents that it was not unkind to tell your children what to do. I wish I had had this video of you explaining why always giving rewards and changing the subject can't change lots of behaviours.

I've been watching your videos and wanted to thank you. My shepherd/lab cross was scared of everything when I got him at 10 weeks, which became reactivity to dogs and people. Since getting an ecollar and not letting get away with behaviours he's so much better this year. He's a really sweet sensitive boy.
The people I got him from had him for 2 weeks and let their kids take control of him and that was so bad for him. Eternally grateful I found you and your videos.

I have a related question... I live in a very small southern town that has a good amount of loose dogs around. I haven't come across a truly aggressive one yet but I'm anxious that I will with my 1 year old hyper boxer. Any advice on what to do if that happens?

Absolutely love seeing successful videos without a prong (I’m not against the proper use of prongs but I’m in Australia where they are illegal) so it’s great to see other tools that can be utilised. Love how well this owner took direction.

I also get a lot of questions about using only positive reinforcement training. It is only one pillar of dog training; it’s important to keep yourself open to all kinds of dog training and pick the best that works for you, the owner, and the dog.

I love your videos. They have helped me so much with my two bone heads that are my world. I have a pit bull and a Shar-Pei lab cross. Both are stubborn as can be but the learn fast as long as you keep the commands the same and don’t let them go off the rails. The biggest thing I have found is consistency! If it is not ok today it will not be ok tomorrow or next month. The rules have to stay the same. Don’t give. They trust you to take care of them and keep them safe. Don’t let them down!

There need to be more trainers like you in this world. I'm a pit bull mom for life and I hate when people classify them as the worst (meanest/most dangerous) dog to own. They are the same as our kids. If parents teach them right from wrong as they should then there is no bad dog. I love you. Thank you for teaching people.

It’s always fantastic to see the progress, just in the time it takes to watch the video. I get that there’s editing here and there but the point is it isn’t like the progress is over several days. It’s beyond me why more dog owners don’t prioritize training and then just wonder why they can’t “get” their dog to listen, as if dogs come “out of the box” obedient. 🤦🏻‍♀️

No bad dogs! We did only treat training for 2 years with our dog, and it lead to aggression. Now we can enjoy a nice walk with our dog on a prong And he can have off leash freedom around people and dogs with his e collar.

How do You put a slip leash on? I’m left handed so it’s easier for me to have my dog on the right side. I heard of the “P” shape thing, but I’m not sure now 😅
