  • Is Dairy Bad For You? This is an in-depth look at the history of the dairy industry, the changes in practices over the last 20 years, and how it may be affecting your digestion, protein absorption and overall tolerance for lactose. Find out how hormones, antibiotics and mass production on dairy farms may potentially be causing adverse health issues. For more information on how simple things like dairy can affect you, go to www.thomasdelauer.com
    Dairy - A History
    1. Between 1991 and 2004, the number of U.S. dairies decreased by half, and those with an excess of 100 cows increased by 94 percent. Big business tends to do anything to increase profits, which was led to changes that impact both our health and our sense of what is morally acceptable. (2)
    2. Between 1950 and 2000, the number of dairy cows decreased by half, however the average milk yield more than tripled. (2)
    What this means for dairy:
    1. Antibiotics:
    a. dairy cows live in some tough conditions and consume a diet that is high in protein and low in fiber, opposite of their natural diet of grass, which is high in fiber and low in nutritional density. They are fed this way to increase production, however it makes cows sick. (2)
    b. To keep cows healthy enough to produce milk, they are fed antibiotics. These antibiotics are passed on to us when we consume dairy products. This could lead to antibiotic resistance, and it is not fully understood what health problems this could pose. (2)
    2. Hormones:
    a. milk contains natural hormones and growth factors - think about it - milk is produced in mammals to create the nutrition and resources for a small mammal to grow to be large. These hormones are meant to bring an 85 lb calf to a full grown 1,500 lbs (4). In addition to these naturally occurring hormones, synthetic growth hormones are frequently used to increase the production of milk. These hormones are readily available in the dairy we drink and may affect our normal hormonal function. (3)
    i. One hormone added to cow’s milk, insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), has been implicated in increased breast and prostate cancer risk. In a study of nearly 22,000 participants for 28 years published by the Journal of Nutrition in 2013, it was found that those who consumed greater than 2.5 servings of dairy products daily had an increased risk of prostate cancer compared to those who consumed less than one half of a serving per day. (7)
    Aren’t there other nutrients that you need from milk?
    Every nutrient that you can obtain from milk, such as calcium, potassium, protein and fats can all be obtained from whole plant foods, such as vegetables, legumes, nuts and fruits.
    It is important to reduce the causes of chronic inflammation in our diets, and the hormones in milk, whether organic, raw milk or regular milk with even more hormones added in, can lead to inflammation.
    Cut dairy out of your diet for 30 days and see how you feel. It you find better digestion, increased energy and improved health, you are likely one of the majority who have an inflammatory response to dairy.
    If you do decide to continue eating dairy, do so in small quantities and be sure to consume organic, raw dairy.

I stopped drinking/dairy two months ago and I like my stomach is much flatter and I have more energy to work out. I highly recommend to everyone to give a try. Dairy is just a business, so don't let your body to be a profit for someone else at cost of your health.

    Thomas, please do a video on how we may be addicted to foods that we are actually allergic to. The constant stomach ache issue reminded me that people sometimes are eating foods they think they like, but really are constantly experiencing the reaction to the food: a heightened state that is brought about by the body's defense system to something that they ate and is trying to defend and detoxify itself from.

    Good video. But I think addressing the difference between Organic Grass Fed RAW dairy and Commercial Pasteurized / Homogenized (even if its organic) is a very important point and a major factor when deciding to consume dairy. The nutrient profile of Raw to Commercial is vastly different. Most who are lactose intolerant will have no issues with RAW. It is not accessible to find all forms of raw dairy (i.e. milk, butter, cheese..) in all state, but if you do live in a state that doesn't make food decisions for you then I would say make the effort to get RAW. I have been drinking RAW milk for a few years now and making my own Raw Milk Kefir. Always want to make sure you buy from reputable farmer, but these days we have the simple technology and stringent regulations to produce raw milk in an extremely safe way.

      My family & i, 6 months ago started drinking Raw A2 grass fed/finished cow & goat milk. We get a gallon each a week from our local farmer. Before we would drink store bought regular pasteurized a1 milk. We had a host of problems for years. Intolerance, deficiencies, bloating, eczema, diarrhea, etc. Once we switched to raw cow & goat milk all problems went away!! Raw milk is a miracle! 🙌

    • @andrewramsay4974
      @andrewramsay4974 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Considering how prevalent prostate cancer is in men, isnt any correlation whatsoever enough to scare you off it? the majority of men that die of "natural causes" actually die of prostate cancer. Its like breast cancer in women, if a product was suspected of causing breast cancer, wouldnt you expect your wife or mom to stop consuming it?

    When I did Whole 30 (removing dairy from my diet), I had a major epiphany that my sinuses had been congested for 40 years and I never even realized it. I always thought I breathed normal until I removed the dairy and was breathing clearer than I ever had in my life. Additionally, my entire life I have had fluid in one of ears causing me to have tubes in my ears 3 times. GONE. No more fluid. My skin cleared up, my joints stopped aching, the chicken skin on my arms went away, and I had an overall reduction in inflammation. You just never know how something is making you feel until you really truly eliminate it for an extended period of time. Whatever science or Vets you want to listen to, listen to your BODY.

    I don’t really agree with the hormone argument since our stomachs mechanically break down the hormones into basic units: lipids, amino acids, and peptides. You’d have to literally inject the milk into your veins for those hormones to effect you. The antibiotic argument is definitely something I’ll have to research. Great videos! You’ve really been a help during my Keto adaption phase 😃

  • @michaelmoore6287

    The question as to if dairy is bad for you or not is very personal. From my perspective I had terrible bloating and congestion with diary and gluten. Once I cut them out entirely at the advice of an excellent nutritionist, I felt like a new person. Now I tend to avoid both, though small amounts don't seem to create the discomfort they once did.

    I read a new research domunentary and this is what that said:
    ~75% are Lactose in tolerence (cant diegest milk)
    It causes leaky gut (search for it unless u know..its a big thing)
    consuming more than 1.25 leters can cause cancer (serious)
    Reason: milk increases IGF-1 (insulin like growth factor - 1) in your blood ... causes acne too.
    But if you are into bodybuilding you know how important IGF-1 is.
    Antibiotics / hormones fed to cows doesent matter to us...(they get burned/diegeated before reaching gi/gut)
    Most importantly: if you love milk.99% time you love it with sugar..it ruins everything...MILK AND SUGAR not good.
    If you are trying to break sugar addiction (which you probabably should) you have to cut diaries as well..(not cheese youghurt)
    Cheese and yoghurt / curd is good
    (Low lactose and good bacteria for your gut...very good)
    Like my comment to make sure another random guy see this too

    Just to say that while I am not disagreeing nor agreeing with you about dairy, the picture that you provide is of factory farmed cows.
    Dairy can come from grass fed free ranging cows, not to mention goat and sheep.
    Another major factor, is the form in which it is consumed.
    Milk is not soft cheese is not hard cheese is not fermented cheese.
    Its not an all or nothing affair.

  • @StephanVet
    @StephanVet 8 ปีที่แล้ว +319

    As a dairy vet, I'd like to provide an up-close look at some of these claims. True, farms have gotten bigger or gone out of business, simply because of tighter margins and efficiency of scale - the dairy farmers that do the best job taking care of their cows and managing their farms well are going to make more money, buy more cows, make more milk, etc. Those that don't do as well go out of business, and cow health and well-being is usually not as good on those farms. So the farms have gotten bigger (still by far mostly family farms), but management and cow comfort has improved over the years. Cow comfort is paramount to health and well-being of cows, which is paramount to high milk production. Cows that are not well taken care of won't produce as much milk, so it's in the farmers' best interest to take care of their cows.
    As for antibiotics, I can assure you that the only antibiotics dairy cows are fed are ones completely unrelated to any antibiotics used in human medicine, and they are simply used to make the cow healthier by altering the population of gut microbes that digest her feed and make the energy in fiber available for her to use. When antibiotics ARE used (to treat disease), the milk is discarded until the antibiotic is cleared from her system. Each load of milk from the farm gets tested for antibiotics before it ever gets unloaded at the processor.
    As for hormones, dairy cows are only given supplemental bovine growth hormone (aka bovine somatotropin or BST), which has NO detectable difference on the milk (which already has hormones from the cow anyway), and is in no way harmful to the cow. Note I said supplemental - she's already producing it herself anyway. If there were any way that it could negatively affect the cow or the milk, it would not be allowed. Bovine growth hormone (the hormone used) and IGF-1 (the hormone that cows make in response to growth hormone) are both proteins and are degraded in the gut as all other proteins are - into single or double animo acids, small enough for absorption through the intestinal wall. Even if you were to inject yourself with bovine growth hormone to get it past your gut digestion, it would have zero effect, as the bovine form is different enough from the human form that it would not do anything.
    As for the diet, cows are fed a mixture of grain and forage (hay / silage), which is more energy-dense than forage alone, but does NOT predispose them to health problems any more than grass / hay diets do - in fact, we often have more metabolic problems with cows on pasture than those fed a diet with grain, silage, and mineral & vitamin supplements balanced for their particular needs.
    So while some people are lactose-intolerant or have milk allergies and therefore feel better not drinking milk, the majority of arguments in this are based on speculation, false claims (though unfortunately widely parrotted), and a poor understanding of cows, biology, and dairy farming.

      So StephenVet, how do you justify stealing (and most of the time killing) the cows baby in order for human dairy consumption? We are the only species on earth that consumes another species breast milk. The milk is designed for the fucking calf!!

    • @StephanVet
      @StephanVet 8 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      1 - Milk cows produce way more milk than needed for their calf - that's why they're milk cows, not beef cows, whose sole purpose is to feed the calf. 2 - I know of no-one who kills the calves. Not saying that no-one does, but I don't know or know of anyone who does. Heifer calves are raised to become milk cows, bull calves are raised as beef (ie, for about 1.5-2 years). The calves get fed milk (often fresh milk on the dairy farm, or powdered milk if raised elsewhere) until they are eating enough solid feed that they don't need the milk.

    • @jshep
      @jshep 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Cow squeezings?....no. Never. Human milk at a critical point in one's life, yes. Bovine milk is not good for anyone beyond the calves who were meant to consume it. 100 calories of kale vs 100 calories of cow's milk? the calcium amount in kale trumps it.

      Eat dairy products from New Zealand. Grass fed cows, that do not live in shelters or eat grains all of the time. Milk has, from (what I understand) vitamin d in it, which (studies show) decreases the incidence of the above diseases. And milk has calcium as well. I think grass fed cows that live in the sunshine produce better milk.. New Zealand is the biggest producer of dairy products I believe. My moto is... all things in moderation.

    This only applies to the United States.
    Nowhere else on Earth is permitted to use rBST and antibiotics use is strictly controlled. (This is is a big corporate scandal!)
    Outside the United states: Sick cows that are ill and are treated with antibiotics are removed from the milk-producing heard and her milk is thrown away. Once the cow is recovered from illness and all antibiotics have cleared the her system, she goes back into the herd. All milk is always tested before being processed for all kinds of things.
    I find it surprising that you address this issue like this was normal and some legitimate practice handed down from business history involving private enterprise and not free enterprise. Fascinating!
    Americans have suppliers of grass-fed organic milk which would make a good alternative regarding anyone's health and safety. (Free Enterprise)

      Yes there is, recent ones too. But this shouldn't surprise you because this kind of diet is not sustainable for the long term without some side effects. Burning ketones for energy is the body's emergency switch. Our body does not prefer this method of getting energy. But go ahead and leave it on for as long as it suits you, but don't be surprised when you get sick more often than others and are overall less energetic (mentally but also physically) over the long term (which you won't feel like you are but others will see as clear as day).

      @sadrien 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robideals685 Really? because beta-hydroxybutyrate increase brain function massively and low carb diets most resemble what we evolved for. And I would say the body definitely prefers it. It obviously prefers it because it can produce glucose from the same fats it produces ketones from, but instead it choses to use them for ketones. Actually, the brain preferentially selects ketones over glucose as a fuel source. And low-carb iron man contestants report feeling far better after their competitions than they did previously on high carb diets that they were recommended by sports physicians.

      Organic grass fed raw is fine. I consume raw goat and sheep dairy only.

    NOT ALL MILK IS THE SAME!
    I agree with your final note about seeing what works for you.
    I went keto, with a great reduction in inflammation on (non-certified but still organic) dairy, from 2 local dairies. I know my farmers and that these are from pasture-raised and well managed herds. I also ate small amounts of organic, grass-fed but pasteurized (mainly as cottage cheese and yogurt) and a small amount of K2-rich pasteurized cheese (brie & gouda).
    I find your videos very informative and well produced. However I found 2 flaws on this one.
    - Milk has been consumed for at least 30K years (not 10k) per Dr. Ron Schmid, The Untold Story of Milk.
    - Lactase production isn’t real needed to digest raw milk. Good raw milk contains has lactase already in it.
    Keep up the great work though! You've been a great resource for me and I'm sure, countless others.

    You cannot have a complete conversation about milk without discussing the effects of pasteurization on the quality of the milk. Also adaptive evolution such as lactose persistence can happen within thousands of years. The real issue with milk is in its processing and over consumption.

      You are a perfect example of why vegans cannot be trusted for nutritional health information. Your link is nothing more than veganism disguised and repackaged as a "plant-based" alternative. Thank you for the link but I also have some links of my own; enjoy:

      A new born calf will get sick from its own mothers milk if you pasturize the before the calf gets it. However almost all mammals will eventually become intoerant to their own mothers mothers milk if not weaned sone enough

    Thomas dr berg did a video on “ plants do not like to be eaten” saying spinach and other foods have way to many oxalate and we should not be consuming them regularly ... can cause all types of bad stuff ... can you please do a short video with your opinion or even a quick response ... Hello Thomas.
    Have you heard about Kefir? It's a probiotic that feeds on milk lactose (milk sugar). It's considered the second best food of the world following by eggs. It's in keto diet but I don't hear anyone talking about it. Please tell me about it.
    Hugs.

    I don't think that Thomas spent nearly enough time on what can be positive about Dairy. First, if it is 100% grass fed that makes all the difference in the world. I was off diary for 20 years because every time I would try to reintroduce it I had digestive issues. Then I tried a 100% grass fed liquid Yoghurt and it was amazing. Then you have the A-1 and A-2 genetic variation in the milk protein. Then you have cheese which if aged over 60 days becomes lactose free. So it depends on the source and the form. And it goes without saying that if don't want to consume dairy you can get by just fine as well!

      Patrick Pummill you said yogurt but yogurt also has probiotics which help the gut maybe that's why it helps some what but the dairy itself is bad period grass feed cows milk is better but it is still bad if you drink to much of it it's like saying I'll just do little bit of coke it wouldn't harm me but if you keep at it it will
