Weapons that do a ton of KO damage are so satisfying when you master them, and Greatsword has to be top of that list. I think if anyone wants to learn Greatsword or the slow weapons in general, Hammer is a great place to start because its more flexible but also teaches you stuff like timing, positioning and predicting.
If you're going for a tank build I strongly recommend mushroomancer and Free Meal. mushroomancer lets you eat Mandragora as max potions and you can hold 10 of em as opposed to real max potions which are both expensive and you can only hold 2 of them. Free meal 3 gives you a 75% chance not to use consumables which enables you to now have even more max healings. It pretty cracked.
Slinger combo is devastatingly easy to use and gives you crazy repositioning of attack to the point I thought it was a bug when I first started using it
Meh it gives way too mixed results for me. I stopped using it after many many attempts. It has a large chance to flinch the monster which would seem to be good, but that usually means the mob is too far away to TCS as a result of the flinch. Further it will flinch a monster when it is already downed so you cant use it to short cancel into TCS when the monster is already on the floor without risking whiffing the TCS. Ultimately it doesn’t really fit with the only consistent GS play, which is incapacitate the monster with trips, flinches, status effects, claggers, traps, environmental hazards, etc then short cancel into TCS over and over again until the monster is dead, so I never really use it.
Remember, when you spend years with a single weapon...you just learn how to do this stuff especially with practice. Hopefully Asmon will become extremly good with the GS for when wilds come out. GS is one of those weapons that if you keep playing, you'll eventually get that "hunter's intuition" as a lot of players call it. Part of it is KNOWING the pattern, and part of it is like a spidey-sense that tells you to roll left half a second after your TCS to dodge the tailspin

I wasn't even subbed to Asmon initially and now I'm playing Monster Hunter because of his coverage. Also got at least 2 of my mates into it too. One of his videos just so happened to pop up in my suggestions and here we are!
Monster hunter series was the only game series that rewards you even when u win or fail. It also pushes you to be better. I also love its crafting and repeatable quest
Yeah i can never get tired of these games. Started from freedom unite and basically have most of the series. The game is forgiving in drop rates, following monsters around im always picking up materials for crafting, monster fights arent always exactly the same either which makes repeating quest alright. The vast amount of builds you can create. Just such great game design. Im always waiting for the next mh release with high hopes. Tho mhrise failed me
As a GS main, it's actually way harder to do in multiplayer as the monsters change targets randomly so it's almost impossible to predict their next movement.
yea it wont happen. Someone else could trigger his planned flinch too early. Most of those trick shots were trades, he knew the monster would flinch because he was beating it and getting it close. Unless you are team darkside and your whole team is super coordinated for a perfect run.
Lets be honest. The video is a giant scam. Peak GS play is just get the monster on the floor and short cancel into TCS. Playing like he did is basically the equivalent of rolling a 100 sided die and “winning” when you get 90 or above and “losing” when you get 89 and below. Even if you play for 100s of hours and increase your skills to peak it only means you “win” at 85 and above vs “losing” at 84 and below. GS is just too slow and monsters are too random to do anything more consistent unless you are doing something to hold them in place for long periods of time (ie status effects, environmental traps, regular traps, claggers, trips, etc). Id compare players who main GS who play like this dude to “Win It Big” dedicated casino players. They are in the casino every day and they are always losing money but every now and then they “Win IT BIG” and get a shot of dopamine so they think it was worth all the carts and time spent getting bodied and healing until the stars align just right and they get that big hit on the monster. Hey if thats the kind of play you like more power to you, but LS and hammer do about the same and have far far more consistent gameplay.
@@oriondye3212 well... it wasnt really 10 steps, and he brought non GS tech into vids like head locking elder dragons, or exploiting the free clutch chance when a monster is exhausted. Also, TCGs is its own thing? Basic triangle spammer of step 1 already discovered it. At least it nailed good things like tackle, then slinger combo. Also the "Helicopter". I just wished we focused on things like aiming GS during charge, he did that, but never focused... the side slap, which combos into roll... would be nice. Maybe even useless things like upward slash, so team mates can try uncoordinated mounts. Also charging during jump attack or mount attack.
@@jeremycu4571 i mean im not really getting your comments man. I guess if you just want to mess around and have fun regardless of if you cart three times and fail the hunt for your friends or not you can do all of the things you mentioned. But if you want to actually beat the monster you wouldn’t do any of that. Aiming GS is only for if you position incorrectly. Which 95% of the time if your not perfectly positioned you are too far away from the monster rather so aiming does literally nothing for you. Most people who have “mastered GS” will not have a problem positioning themselves to land their GS hits straight on so aiming is only really for noobs.
He's getting it! It's so true what he's said about the game looking janky and boring in videos when you've never played it, both when you see pros and noobs. But once you play it yourself, you really understand just how much there is to playing this game that doesn't show in videos, how incredibly satisfying it feels to master it. We never got around to playing it and I didn't want to get far ahead of him. Now he was watching your videos on breaks at work and he brought it up so we both reinstalled and I'm doing iceborne for the first time. Still a fantastic game. The old ones didn't click being on handheld, world is the first one that grabbed me and had me sinking hundreds of hours. Rise also suffers as some of the mechanics aren't as cool as they seem to be initially, and being a switch port it honestly looks worse than world. Thanks for the vids man I'm back to MH. 7:07 In case nobody mentioned it (too many posts to make sure haha). If the next hit you do makes the monster look like they ran out of breath, if you grapple hook latch on to them, it extends their stun time. I believe this is a hard refresh on how long the stun lasts too (might even be better to say it resets the stun time AND extends it) Hence why the trick is, you see em look dazed/out of breath, latch on and immediately jump off the monster, then wail on em. Hope your stay at MonHun land continues to be enjoyable and epic for you -thumbsup-

to me one thing why the game can be so successful and being replayable is that most of the important parts of the game can be cleared with lower skill level and feel extremely rewarding. And it can also be cleared with higher skill level and also feel extremely rewarding. and theres so many different monsters each with its own unique characteristics and really difficult ones as well that you dont really feel bad or stuck at the game even if you dont clear those.

MHW is blowing because; 1. New MH announcement. 2. MHW currently has a MASSIVE discount going on, so lots of new players. I got the base game and expansion myself for like 30$. 3. It's easy to go back and play it. So people hear it's blowing up with new players, old players come back. 4. Game good.
I'm a GS main and a CB sub, these 2 are the greatest weapons in MHW. The instant reward of knocking a monster or breaking a part when your biggest attack lands is just something you have to experience yourself
@@diveblock2058 I don't think it is. The moveset is pretty standard. It is a weapon that mostly relies on you knowing the monsters and how they behave. I personally like the charge blade more since it is more complex to use, but also dishes out a lot of damage. All weapons require you to know the monsters, but some weapons also require you to know the weapon itself, and great sword is not one of them imo. For new players I would either recommend the long sword or dual blades. Long sword is pretty nice since it also has moves for s (foresight slash and the iceborne Iai slash which just rely on monster knowledge to use right).
@@Voidstroyer for new players i just recommend sas its simple and easy to use...but i just say choose whatever you like they are all easy to use i strongly disagree with what you are saying about the great sword because as seen in this video there is tech on tech. with most weapons position is important, sure, but in gs positioning is everything. because the weapon is so slow its harder to set up predictions and you have to learn monsters entire attack strings and follow ups and have an effective counter for them all while when playing charge blade its easier to compromise its all fun and games to pull off a dunk with a weapon as fast as the monster with a wide hitbox however when you set up a true charge slash before the monster is even on your screen and it hits perfectly. that requires perfect mastery of the game. to master the great sword is to master monster hunter and if you have full mastery of the great sword every other weapon becomes quite easy to play in comparison tldr there is so much room for error in the gs that its not even close comparing it to smth like the charge blade when it comes to skill ceiling. it easily surpasses every other weapon in terms of mastery (in mhw)
It's crazy how big of a skill difference there is from the top (I would say) 2% of the playerbase. Where they've mastered a complete understanding of the monsters to the point where they not only predict the monsters next attack but also know exactly where to stand to avoid the attack and punish the monster at the same time. Not to mention how they can manifest the monster to flinch or topple whenever they need it to, which takes a memorization of how much hits they've done to certain parts.
Pickle's hitboxes in 3U are so perfect that someone with an overall notion of his entire moveset can just kill him in the Jaggia quest with low rank gear easily without carting once

@@projectphyrexia yeah i get what you mean, and it's understandable✌️ But fr, if you watch his runs, he's very very good, especially on sunbreak where people where using only counter bombs instead of playing the actual weapon , he's a very good scripter also 🫡
@@casti94 true, i was unaware of this video of his, but i was familiar with positioning is key with the greatsword where he absolutely demolishes manga. he's crazy good, just this video isn't quite displaying what he's capable of and asmon's title sorta misled me
So with the tackles its hard to see exactly what he did, but on the first monster he hyper armored the hit from the monster, in the second one he hyper armored the roar, which would normally stagger him. It also helps to advance the charge level.
The helicopter slash and slinger combo is pretty neat. One makes you jump way to the side so you have a poor mans fade slash of the long sword, the other allows you to reorient yourself into any direction so after you jumped sideways, you can just do a tcs 90° towards the monster.
To be fair, that's likely just a montage of moments where everything worked out perfectly, removing all the whiffs. Great Sword is awesome when it works just right, but no pro I ever watched had this sort of 100% productivity.
The amount of hours doesn't change much. You can know the monsters' tells, but they still move around erratically, even more so when enraged. Especially with a weapon like a great sword, that has slow and committed attacks, people are going to whiff, no matter how much they know the monsters. Anyone who actually plays the game will know that.
One, as I already said, that isn't true for very fast or enraged monsters - at least unless you're doing the most boring fight ever, spending 90% of it running and running and dodging and running, only ever attacking when the monster did some attack that leaves it still for 2-3 seconds and you are within range, so you know the attack won't miss. I can't see many beyond the most "I told you I could eat all these nails, now take me to the ER" morons doing that for empty bragging rights. And two, the fact you say "almost" yourself already would prove my point anyway.
As someone who has learned every weapon and mastered (though not perfected like most of the 10 steps videos so mastered might be arguable) 3 weapons over 1000 hours since early 2019 I find it funny in a wholesome kind of way to watch him and friends i have recently gotten into the game show off their gear, fumble with the monster names, and their reactions to their first times with certain monsters
Idk if id say they are the best. More like fucked in your favor because most of them are smaller than they look. Optimally all hitboxes would completely correspond to the body parts and projectiles visually
Oh, and also there are techniques in this game like Stun Locks, Leg Lock by repeatedly hitting the legs to keep the monster from standing, Paralyze Status Lock, Sleep Bombing (because monsters take 2x damage on the first hit it takes when sleeping), Trap Spamming and Flash Spamming too...
monster hunter world digital deluxe on ps5 is 20 dollars while the on steam cost 30(base) and deluxe edition cost 70, and with the open beta for wilds gave it a big boost in promotion.
When the monster is staggered (standing and drooling) the time you spend walking to it or setting up an attack can be retrieved by hooking onto the monster because it resets the staggered duration to full.
To be honest, for a non-stream watcher, the monter hunter streams have been fucking amazing to watch

God hammer is so satisfying to use when quick farming double rath hunts flash+stun just fucks them so hard.
greatsword deals literally 0 KO damage though LOL
@@hua.. what really ? Was always under the impression that it does cuz it downs so much lol
It's the big damage that pushes threshold to stagger/part break the boss, but yeah great sword is not a blunt weapon.
@@hua.. this is wrong. GS does KO via tackles and punish draw via frostfang armor skill.
True, I hate people clowning and meme-ing on mushroomancer. It's a good skill albeit situational.

Ultimately it doesn’t really fit with the only consistent GS play, which is incapacitate the monster with trips, flinches, status effects, claggers, traps, environmental hazards, etc then short cancel into TCS over and over again until the monster is dead, so I never really use it.
its very important in late-game fights where monsters move really fast
Remember, when you spend years with a single weapon...you just learn how to do this stuff especially with practice. Hopefully Asmon will become extremly good with the GS for when wilds come out. He already does decent with it for a first timer.

@@GuyWithAnAmazingHat Yeah, I don't get how somebody can say he'd be turned off by the grind because of what you just said. It's up his alley.
GS is one of those weapons that if you keep playing, you'll eventually get that "hunter's intuition" as a lot of players call it. Part of it is KNOWING the pattern, and part of it is like a spidey-sense that tells you to roll left half a second after your TCS to dodge the tailspin

Tho mhrise failed me
Imagine doing co-op seeing one greatsword guy charging at far side of battlefield, then all you know is the monster came to him and got knocked
And that's when you see videos like this and just fully appreciate how deep the combat can get and how insanely talented these people are, and it's so so satisfying to watch people be good at this game when you've played it yourself.
As much as I'm glad he's enjoying GS, I hope he sticks with the game long enough to try other weapons too. a big part of the fun in MH is how switching weapons can completely change a fight and give a whole new experience

This is why I love monster Hunter. It’s common for me to be in awe of other hunters and how badass they can be.
They are really nice, and I find it to be way more awesome how they are supportive of new players. I’m just now trying Fatalis, and trying solo, and on sos. When trying sos many times I still get encouragement stickers when I die, and people keep joining the quest.
you got me playing again. I played the game a ton when it came out on ps4. Later it came out on PC and I played it again. I beat it and made decent progress. I always loved world and watching you playing everyday made me want to play it again. I also bought iceborne on a sale a year ago and was going to play it with a friend. Got this vid on my second monitor.
I love the progression from video 1 to the current playtime. He went from hating on the game to absolutely loving the small, finer details. It really is a great game. And Asmongold, it’s also a lot of fun with friends.
7:07 In case nobody mentioned it (too many posts to make sure haha). If the next hit you do makes the monster look like they ran out of breath, if you grapple hook latch on to them, it extends their stun time.
I believe this is a hard refresh on how long the stun lasts too (might even be better to say it resets the stun time AND extends it)
Hence why the trick is, you see em look dazed/out of breath, latch on and immediately jump off the monster, then wail on em.
Hope your stay at MonHun land continues to be enjoyable and epic for you -thumbsup-

@@Voidstroyer for new players i just recommend sas its simple and easy to use...but i just say choose whatever you like they are all easy to use
i strongly disagree with what you are saying about the great sword because as seen in this video there is tech on tech. with most weapons position is important, sure, but in gs positioning is everything. because the weapon is so slow its harder to set up predictions and you have to learn monsters entire attack strings and follow ups and have an effective counter for them all
while when playing charge blade its easier to compromise
its all fun and games to pull off a dunk with a weapon as fast as the monster with a wide hitbox however when you set up a true charge slash before the monster is even on your screen and it hits perfectly. that requires perfect mastery of the game.
to master the great sword is to master monster hunter and if you have full mastery of the great sword every other weapon becomes quite easy to play in comparison
tldr there is so much room for error in the gs that its not even close comparing it to smth like the charge blade when it comes to skill ceiling. it easily surpasses every other weapon in terms of mastery (in mhw)
Notable addition to greatsword tips: Ledge hopping. Can come in clutch periodically
I have been begging him to watch a video like this since day 1. Thank fuck, I hope he gets inspired and starts trying out the sweet moves lol
Its about time. Now maybe he can use flash and sling them to walls at the least.
Yeah the other tackle video that was literally just tackling to hunt a monster was infuriating.
Now he knows what most of the future monsters look like due to spoilers...
People should just let him play and figure things out on his own.
Just wait untill he finds out of the other weapons movelists.
Me play game lots. Me play game better
Pickle's hitboxes in 3U are so perfect that someone with an overall notion of his entire moveset can just kill him in the Jaggia quest with low rank gear easily without carting once

The helicopter slash and slinger combo is pretty neat.
One makes you jump way to the side so you have a poor mans fade slash of the long sword, the other allows you to reorient yourself into any direction so after you jumped sideways, you can just do a tcs 90° towards the monster.

its not that hard at a few thousand hours and a few thousand hunts
The amount of hours doesn't change much. You can know the monsters' tells, but they still move around erratically, even more so when enraged. Especially with a weapon like a great sword, that has slow and committed attacks, people are going to whiff, no matter how much they know the monsters. Anyone who actually plays the game will know that.
@@vladenpain really if you don't bring your cat you can almost always tell what they'll do.

Cannot wait for him to reach Alatreon. This guy has by far the best hitboxes in the entire game.
