They gave it up when they released D3 and it was worse than early access POE. They just hadn't realized that was the beginning of the end, they had a chance to recover but it would have taken a lot of work.
People can feel the vibe what games are full of passion and what games aren't. POE time and time again shows they pour passion into every season by adding a lot of content. Diablo 4? Felt like they are just nickel and dime or cash grab.
By the way, if anyone sees this, Talkative Tri would love to talk to Asmongold. If Asmon can give him some time, that'd be great. But to respond tot his comment: REMEMBER THAT BG3 CONTROVERSIAL COMMENT? As to "PLEASE DON'T SET A NEW STANDARD"? Because guess what? GGG just said: "CHALLENGE ACCEPTED." As it turns out, the standard set by BG3 that so many studios feared? That's a FAIR STANDARD to have. Dear studios: show your customers that you CARE and deliver a product that shows it. It's possible. Larian proved it. GGG proved it. Now get cooking.
PoE is basically what Diablo was meant to be. If Blizzard were capable of thinking ahead further than their next investor meeting, they could've controlled this entire market.
Path of Exile was a natural evolution of Diablo 2, though with its own unique ideas, and with the pros and cons of being an online only game which was free to play. Path of Exile 2 seems more like just a natural evolution of the entire genre though.
Something I found interesting was it looks like even more things are inspired by d2 for poe2. To me the gameplay looks alot closer to d2 in terms of weight and feel than d3, d4, or poe 1. It's hard to explain but all the gameplay has felt like a truly next gen diablo 2 to me

As soon as i heard the Diablo developers say in an interview "...if you want diablo 2, go play diablo 2..." i knew it was over. Diablo died in the same house Blizzard North died in.
To be fair, that sentiment makes sense. Diablo 4 is not Diablo 2 so there's no reason to expect them to be exactly alike. Now the fact that D4 didn't appear to learn anything from the games that came before and seems to have been made in a vacuum is a different problem.

Rob doesn't even know what Rogue is. Diablo is based on Rogue too. We could call Diablo a Rogue-like. I think I played Rogue once or twice. But I preferred Angband which was a Lord of the Rings Rogue. Just better imo.
As an old diablo devout with a little over 24k hours between diablo 1 and 2 alone..... this tickles me. They moved away from the formula, shot themselves in the foot, and now are sinking against a competitor that made a similar but unique enough formula that started as an homage to the original. It's almost like they were listening to players or something.
Sure - when a Triple A live service game is rushed out with half its features missing, including an end game, with a bunch of bugs, boring progression, unsatisfying game loop, uninteresting loot, with all overperforming synergies nerfed into the ground solely to maximize play time... we'll call it a Diablo-Like.
wow, yeah, that's what I felt about d4, I like the game until reaching the boring endgame and realization that now only one class rules, i mean I could play other classes and have some fun, but there's always a desire to be the strongest (that's why we grind hack&slash games) and a realization that nothing comes even close to Spiritborn is killing it.
I thank D1 for setting the bar for good games. I thank D2 for proving that there are such things as good sequels. I thank D3 for thousands of hours of distraction and a I thank D4 for getting me back onto POE.
The most ironic thing about the viewer numbers for D4 and POE is that D4 is marketing itself as a mass market appeal game which draws in the largest possible audience. Yet is being completely outmatched by the "super niche" POE 2
PoE2 feels like it's made with love. Yes it is a bit harder but Souls/Elden Ring has shown that players appreciate not just being in a movie with a few buttons/clicks.

I think you all are missing the point of the original comment. There's no comparison drawn between the two games, only an analogy in their being an expansion (with added features etc) of a previous very successful game and of what made it good.
"A free-to-play game is beating us in playability and popularity? Maybe we should push ourselves to make a better product.... "Too hard -- easier to just pay off gaming media and influencers to shit on the game, and then we buy out the competition." -- Blizzard, probably.
The sheer arrogance of Blizzard. This isn't 2010. the company has a dwindled and traumatized customer-base that hates them, their reputation completely ruined and their popularity long dead. They can't treat 2024 like their heyday and attempt to release a "trailer" for their game on the same day and time as their competitor's game "trailer" and expect that to damage their opponent's visibility. They no longer have that level of power and influence to pull that off, it's frankly embarrassing. It's like an old boxer getting back into the ring after being retired for 2 decades and looking surprised when the 25yo dude in his prime kicked his old ass.
I never even got into any of their games since I didn’t game on pc back then. Now they don’t make anything that looks good to me as a possible new customer.

I really think large dev teams do more harm than good. Look at Oblivion and a Skyrim. Both were masterful and had relatively small dev teams. Suddenly Bethesda gets huge and well over doubles their team size and it takes them 7 years to make Starfield which is not nearly as good a game as Skyrim.
its not much of an fault from employees, more than from the ceo's they want things to be done faster and cheaper, devs being overworked and when the game releases there are 100s of bugs, and then again devs has to fix it on overtime, cant do things well when you are being tortured

That's why I'm not really that excited for this game - it's basically guaranteed to be temporary.

I was telling people after Blizzard merged with Activision that the games coming out after the merger were going to junk in comparing them to before the merger and I was right, D3 WAS atrocious when it came out as it was pretty much a MMO. It was also nerfed like 4 to 6 times in 2 months.
As a long time ARPG player, these are my experiences: D4 - Bought it, played it, uninstalled it. Then I uninstalled the blizzard app. PoE II - I've refused to look at pre-hype and spoil it so I know nothing. When I saw this video, I went to check steam, got hyped that it's almost out and Immediately purchased early access.
I bought D4 when it came out. It was the worst decision i have ever made. Gave it another shot recently (week ago), even bought the DLC. After a week i was 1-shotting every fucking thing to exist while not even being min/maxed. NOTHING to do left. Awesome game 10/10, there wont be another try.
Path of exile is like a high-end restaurant and Diablo 4 is McDonald’s, but the high-end restaurant is cheaper. People that go to McDonald’s are used to garbage and are afraid of going into the high-end restaurant.
Yeah and what happens when the high end restaurant is free and the mcdonalds costs 100$? You call mcdonalds bad and they fucking fail because they're bad. Stop it. Prime (evil) example of toxic positivity.
Wrong analogy. D4 (paid game) supposed to be the high end restaurant serving bland and soul less food, while PoE (free to play) is the street food vendor serving food pack with rich flavours.
The big difference is that here devs actually played D2 a lot so they have an idea of what a good Diablo-like game should look like and they can play their own game. Most probably D4 devs never even played D2 so how they could know how to create a good Diablo-like game. This is not Blizzard North. Comparing D4 to PoE2 is like a night and day difference. PoE2 is a more Diablo-like game than D4 itself and they are in full panic mode. They had a whole year to create good content and be prepared but they blew it big time.

You just can tell that GGG devs are gamers creating a game for other gamers. Can't tell this about the D4 team.
Blizzard could learn a lot from the Last Epoch devs. Last Epoch gave PoE 2 a shout-out on Twitter when the launch happened, (Classy) and you can be sure they were waiting around to play PoE 2. Not a good look for Blizzard, but then again, when was the last time they did look good? I'd say, Overwatch 1, year 1. Maybe halfway into year 2 at most.

One of the things that has really impressed me about PoE2's footage so far... is the movement. There he is, talking about "Diablo-like" aRPGs; I have been longing for YEARS for aRPGs to finally move beyond the shadow of Diablo 1 and actually do something new with the control scheme. The "1 click to rule them all" gameplay was janky and outdated even in Diablo 1, but the snobby aRPG elitists out there absolutely shackled the genre for two decades. Seeing a warrior with a big tower shield... backing away from the enemy, tactically covering with the shield, dodging sideways, then leaping at the enemy, without seeing a cursor pinging back and forth madly? Breath of fresh air.
You can do all the things mentioned on a mouse also 😂 You needing 4 keybinds to moce instead of an accurate mouseclick isnt whats "held the genre back" whats held the genre back is shit companies like blizzard making bad games like d3 and d4. @@Odyssey636 "You needing 4 keybinds to moce instead of an accurate mouseclick" An. Accurate. Mouse click. Notice all the conditionals there? If you're clicking to move, you're not clicking the enemy. If you're clicking to move, you're not clicking anything on the interface. And if you're clicking to move, then your character is brainlessly running to that point - straight at it. No strafing, no dodging, no meandering... just one move command, like a single brainless unit in an RTS, except the unit has no ability to auto-target enemies the way it would in an RTS. So please, share with the class - how exactly is one click, requiring total usage of the mouse's pointing and clicking capacity in that moment, superior to being able to move freely with one hand... and move the cursor independently with the other? Please tell us all how the original Doom would have been better if move forward and shoot were both left click, depending on whether you were looking at an enemy. Spam emojis like a teenage girl all you like - one of the reasons people who don't like aRPGs don't like aRPGs? The elitists turned the genre into an RSI generating mess of visual noise with awful end-game power creep (because it's actually rather difficult to balance a game around gameplay that is 90% left click).

D4 devs have nothing to complain about. They literally put out a tweet a couple weeks into season 6 asking "should we fix the game or leave it until next season" (re: spiritborn) instead of doing what any other game developer would do and FIX THE DAMN GAME. So basically 5 of the classes were (and still are) completely worthless in season 6. As of this post they still have done nothing.
@@harhatoxic8271 Sure thing buddy. Tell that to all the players who quit because they have no interest in playing spiritborn. Every season has been defined by 100x plus imbalance between classes. The incompetence is staggering.
The only thing that kept D4 even remotely interesting and fun for a time (I quit a few weeks ago now) is how broken Spiritborn are. Otherwise their classes are incredibly weak, slow and boring. D4 is a flop, through and through. An entire expansion didn't add ANY end-game worth doing. No new end-game bosses to farm. No interesting, fun or engaging end-game content to farm. I think the biggest problem is that the bigger companies get the divide between gamers and corporation profiteering widens. I feel like any game company that can avoid doing so should NOT go public. The moment they go public they just become another profit machine that has to churn numbers each quarter to appease investors who care little about what the game is, what it does, and how fun it is. They just want quick instant cash even if it means the game will burn tomorrow they can cash out today and that's all that matters. I used to love Star Wars games but all the big name brand game companies ruined them. I haven't played them in a decade. Knights of the Old Republic was one of my favorite games. I thing for me the biggest hype for any game in my life would be if Lauren Studios (who made Baldur's Gate III, who happens to be a private company) made KOTOR III. I feel like they could 100% do it, 100% make it fun, 100% stick to the turn based genre and give it a story and plot that would turn heads. One can dream, no doubt Disney would find a way to **** it up anyways even if it did happen.
Yea Blizzard clearly stopped caring years ago. They just make these games because they are a cooperation, they don't make them because they enjoy it and want to make a masterpiece... I don't know what people expected when activision partnered with them..
By the way, this Rod Fergusson was the same guy who ruined Gears Of War franchise, he took control of the franchise from GoW 4 and since then the franchise has never been the same.

I have many friends that liked Diablo 3, hated Diablo 4 but were intimidated by the learning curve and general clunkiness of PoE 1, so they never picked it up even if it I knew they would have liked the endgame. After the reveal stream, they all bought the early access for PoE 2. Blizzard is right to be scared.
I mean, the term "EXILE-LIKE" game or so makes much sense since the game is quite unique at its genre. Same thing goes with escape from tarkov, ppl use "tarkov-like" game or so for extraction/realism FPS game.
PoE1 is the spiritual successor to Diablo 2 which makes it the true Diablo 3. This in result makes PoE2 the true Diablo 4. Kinda ironic how a Diablo4 head dev wants to push "diablo-like" when their own game has the least in common with Diablo 2.

The USED to call them that. Once PoE got a foothold, people stopped calling it that as there was a legit contender. Case and point, no one has called PoE a "diablo clone" in almost a decade.
PoE has a major obstacle here in the EU. Their providers seem to be from rather exotic suppliers and every day, at prime time, you get lag, dropped frames and whatnot. Blizzard seems to have purchased more bandwidth and while PoE starts to rubberband, give you 10+ seconds of frozen screen and then some fast action, Battlenet runs smooth as silk with no noticeable delays.

I got it on sale a year after release and had alot of fun going through the main storyline. It's a beautiful game visually, the ambiance is dark and gruesome like the old Diablos, the voice acting is great, the gameplay is engaging(as much as a hack and slash can be), the stories are interesting for the most part. POE and Diablo franchises have diverged ALOT, not the same TA. That was clear when D3 came out. Are Blizzard greedy as hell and take questionnable decisions? Cue multiple videos of watching people destroy extra copies of raid-only gear that they could not trade because of this decision. One of the MAIN reasons I continue to play Path to this day is that I can farm anything, and sell it for currency. And, with enough currency, buy any other item. It might take forever, but I can do it. Player to player trade is probably THE most important thing to me. Path has understood that since Day. Fucking. One.
I still vividly remember the days of trading on the beach outside of act1 town. Each player drops his item and runs to the other one, and the distance has to be exactly 8 sarnian yards, if it's too close the other guy might pick up both items if he's fast enough, and if it's too far and and his character is a lot faster he'll pick both up again

The problem people usually have with pay2win in all forms isn't that some people get geared too easily, the problem is on the other end, it's that gearing for free intentionally takes way too long. PoE doesn't have that problem, if you know how you can buy whatever, and even those that suck at it or just don't have the time have a big selection of capable builds that pretty much work on chaos fumes.

Takes whole night with PC left on download to install it. Lots of people share this problem with battlenet launcher, and they NEVER fucking did anything about that.
I can't even comprehend that they're going to add 6 new starting classes and that all classes will have 3 ascendancies. As a non poe1 player and previously a diablo enjoyer, the game as it is currently feels way more in depth with the class system alone compared to d3 or d4.
PoE2: Released on December 6, 2024. Blizzard: We need to NERF it. Too much content, it’s overcomplicated. We need to NERF all characters; too many characters. We need to NERF skill VFX; it’s too realistic, it’$ not fun.

I think we all have 1 or 2 steam friends who we just CONSTANTLY see, for like the last 10 years, in Path of Exile. And that's had a huge effect, and now that we'll all get the chance to start fresh together, I anticipate this launch to certifiably insane. & I'm in favor of 'poe-like' (like Edgar Allan Poe) as an ARPG synonym lol
especially when the Diablo dev guy says not to call diablo like games that don't resemble diablo. Basically giving his own permission without realizing it haha
you can invite 2 friends to play along with you in poe 2 for the same price as the long Johnson mount in wow for 90$ one took 6 years development by a team and cost 30$ the other took 1 person 2 days... and cost 90$
Blizzard could of had monopoly over the genre but dropped the ball so hard over d3, d4 was their last chance at redemption and they failed even harder 🤣
The main reason i left diablo 3 to path of exile was obviusly that blizzard dident care about their games anymore, and path of exile is just superior in every way!
Yeah same for me. After I realized that whirlwind barb will remain as the only playable class and build until RoS comes out, I switched. And D3 remained in this sorry state for almost a year. And now we have literally the same situation with D4 and spiritborn. No content, no balance and the little stuff that's actually good can't keep me interested. Blizzard and the Diablo franchise didn't change one bit in the past 12 years. Thank God PoE1 and PoE2 exist.
Except accesibility to new players. I mean D3 was bad, but it was new player friendly while PoE is good but it is not new player friendly (at all). PoE 2 seems to improve on that tho which is great.
I never noticed a difference in the diablo 3 seasons, a class usually only had one build that was ok to run... boring. Then poe on the otherhand had so much more to offer. The only thing was back then I needed time to understand the systems
The delayed introduction of the Armoury feature in D4 is a valid point of critique, especially for a game launched by a studio with as much experience as Blizzard. Features like an armoury-allowing players to easily switch between gear setups and skill builds-are considered essential quality-of-life elements in modern ARPGs. Given that similar systems existed in Diablo 3, players expected this from day one in D4, especially in a game designed around diverse builds and frequent respecs. The late addition likely frustrated players who spent countless hours manually swapping gear and reconfiguring builds, detracting from the fun of experimentation and fluid play. For a live-service game like D4, this kind of oversight can alienate its core audience, especially when competing games like Path of Exile 2 prioritize such conveniences and ensure they’re part of the foundational experience. While it's good that Blizzard eventually implemented the feature, its absence at launch feels like a missed opportunity to establish D4 as a polished and modern ARPG from the get-go. Combined with other criticisms, like limited endgame content and class imbalances, it's understandable why many players might look toward POE 2 as a more thoughtfully crafted alternative.
Not even half of the classes actually. Every class will have 3 ascendancy classes, but the 6 at the start of early access will only have 2 of those. So it's going to be 6 more ascendancy classes, and then 6 more classes with 3 each for a 18 more ascendancies by the full release.
Blizzard just needs to acknowledge that they are better at making movies than they are at making video games at this point. Best part of the D4 was the cutscenes and it's what got me through the game, and why me and so many other people dropped the game as soon as they beat the campaign and saw all the cutscenes.
Bro I swear cut scenes are the only good thing Blizzard has done in many many years now, they should legit just make a badass fantasy TV show done in their animated art style everyone knows them for. It would be cool
GGG understands their player base, they know the majority will play for a month and then be done with their personal goals, and they're fine with it, they respect the fact that everyone has something else they wanna play, and if you don't, well, there's a bunch of content to explore
I did since day 1. Diablo has never been a good game. Even d2 is trash when u look back at the systems. The damn potion system alone is one of the worst design decisions ive ever seen😂
D3 was already bad, act 1 in beta was great, afterwards it was designed to milk his audience and boring, it still felt smaller than D2. D4 didnt even touch.
Obvously PoE has been called a sequel too Diablo 2. However PoE is now changing the industry into it's own genre and thus "PoE Like" does make sense. Especially when they now have WASD, dodge, active block, weapon swap and then providing so many fresh ideas for ARPGs in design choices. It's come a long way from "Diablo Like".
In my opinion- Blizzard should just pull their heads out their ass and do better. They can do better, they do not seem like they put enough hard work, thought or care into their games anymore.
That happens when you get greedy, start cutting costs at all corners and then you jump onto the ESG money train and replace all your talent with garbage DEI hires over many years. Now their studio just like many others is completely fked.
I think you should be explaining to newer players that if they play on standard to learn mechanic of the game, It would help them play better and not depend heavily on the market no mater how bad the trade values get. It would incentivize them to try new build look into other mechanics and get deeper into the game?

The very moment Blizzard announced Diablo Inmortal instead of Diablo 4 they gave up the ARPG genre to Path of Exile
Hard facts
Do you guys not have phones??
No! it was 2008 and the merge with activision. years before diablo 3 (if you remember that time, you know)
They gave it up when they released D3 and it was worse than early access POE. They just hadn't realized that was the beginning of the end, they had a chance to recover but it would have taken a lot of work.

Turns out when you care about your games, gamers do too.
that sentiment cant be extended to pretty much anything in life as well
Too bad many devs haven’t learned that yet
People can feel the vibe what games are full of passion and what games aren't. POE time and time again shows they pour passion into every season by adding a lot of content. Diablo 4? Felt like they are just nickel and dime or cash grab.
Perfect way of putting it! ❤
By the way, if anyone sees this, Talkative Tri would love to talk to Asmongold. If Asmon can give him some time, that'd be great.
But to respond tot his comment:
REMEMBER THAT BG3 CONTROVERSIAL COMMENT? As to "PLEASE DON'T SET A NEW STANDARD"?
Because guess what? GGG just said: "CHALLENGE ACCEPTED."
As it turns out, the standard set by BG3 that so many studios feared? That's a FAIR STANDARD to have.
Dear studios: show your customers that you CARE and deliver a product that shows it. It's possible. Larian proved it. GGG proved it.
Now get cooking.
PoE is basically what Diablo was meant to be.
If Blizzard were capable of thinking ahead further than their next investor meeting, they could've controlled this entire market.
Path of Exile was a natural evolution of Diablo 2, though with its own unique ideas, and with the pros and cons of being an online only game which was free to play.
Path of Exile 2 seems more like just a natural evolution of the entire genre though.
when diablo 4 2 comes out it'll still be $60 with MTX, but they'll add a subscription cost for longevity.
Something I found interesting was it looks like even more things are inspired by d2 for poe2. To me the gameplay looks alot closer to d2 in terms of weight and feel than d3, d4, or poe 1. It's hard to explain but all the gameplay has felt like a truly next gen diablo 2 to me

Welcome, exile! You will be taken care of over here :)
You can do all the things mentioned on a mouse also 😂
You needing 4 keybinds to moce instead of an accurate mouseclick isnt whats "held the genre back" whats held the genre back is shit companies like blizzard making bad games like d3 and d4.
Now them having the option to choose is def the right answer. But backing away with a tower shield doesnt make a good game 😂😂😂

@@Odyssey636 "You needing 4 keybinds to moce instead of an accurate mouseclick"
An.

Whole mid season nerfs and buffs is horrible way for ARPG season

I feel like they could 100% do it, 100% make it fun, 100% stick to the turn based genre and give it a story and plot that would turn heads.
One can dream, no doubt Disney would find a way to **** it up anyways even if it did happen.

"Every single item in the game is freely available to trade with other players. We never lock ANYTHING to your account. Oh, except for gold."
I will never, ever, ever play anything by Blizzard again.
Case in point, when Bungie was considering allowing player trade, they had the brilliant idea to ASK BLIZZARD. Blizzard advised them not to, so they didn't.

Blizzard trying to steal other companies thunder is absolutely nothing new. I just thought they’d stopped for a time.
Everybody is gonna play PoE2 .. Blizzard is gonna play themselves ...
lol. Nice.
Blizzard's targert audience for D4 is the complete opposite of PoEs tho but who cares right
GGG understands their player base, they know the majority will play for a month and then be done with their personal goals, and they're fine with it, they respect the fact that everyone has something else they wanna play, and if you don't, well, there's a bunch of content to explore
