This is the song that was playing in my headphones after my first day walking around Manhattan. I was on top on the Rockfeller tower and watching the sun set on the city and Central Park.
+invock I can still remember listening to this while watching the sunset over Tampa from my grandparent's dock. It was storming out so the sky was a yellowish gray color. Very fitting for this theme.
This song always kicks my imagination into high gear when I'm micromanaging. How each and every simoleon spent on a hospital or school affects the life of my sims. Just 30 simoleons away from an overcrowded emergency room. Build a new school and see the children flock in search of a better future. And how people that started living in trailer homes steadily improve their living conditions, start living in better homes, then apartments. How a quaint silent village with a 1 engine firehouse develops to a full fledged city and a 16 engine strong fire department. And how it can be compared to real life.
The emotion that the music brings to the game is a big part of what makes the game so memorable to me. It fits the game very well, certain tracks seem to herald progress or the glory of nature, or to remind us that no matter how populous and prosperous our cities, keeping nature healthy is necessary to sustain our cities long-term. Others fit a busy city, and some incorporate both our cities and nature into their message. They add a human element to the game with the themes I think are present in them, even though they're instumental. And that human element impacts me emotionally and I think is part of why I go back to this game, because emotional connections with characters in games are important to me (even vague populations like a city's population). What are we doing all this for if not to build a bright future for them?
I love this song... it has a teary, yet optimistic feel to it. It has the spirit of someone who went through a tragic moment in their life and are trying to find a new meaning. When the powerful notes come in at 2:20 and 3:13, it's like the sun rising, and the person discovers who they are. :)
@@sirytsejam8496 Not at all, the specifity of the tone and the phrasing indicates an oboe. The sound is less open, sharper and the phrasing slightly less flexible (though the player is amazing !).
Hey VbackseatRomeoV, Thanks for uploading these tunes !!! (from the composer Jerry Martin) By the way, the lead instrument is an oboe. Played by multi-instrumentalist Paul MacCandless.
Why don't you do something with your youtube channel, you can upload video on how you composed music for Sims and sim City. You can explain how you get a gig for videogames. I hope you will read this.
I have no idea if you’re still active or able to get notifications on this account but thank you so much for your hard work and contribution to this game. I still come back years later to enjoy these wonderful tracks. I still remember being absolutely enamoured with this game and its music as a child.
I can remember me and my brother playing this game in 2010/2011, I was 7/8 years old at the time, building our cities in a fabulous way, and I fell in love with that thing. Today I'm studying hard to pass an entrance exam and do a career as an urban planner
Not entirely unusual, I’d spend hours at a time playing this at my Grandma’s house. She passed away years ago but part of my memory of her lives on through this game in a sense.
The bass line is so incredible in this track. I remember playing SC4 with my PC system cranked, sub on high and this tune just ROCKING the desk when it kicks. So chill.
There's something about this song that resonated with me the first time I heard it, 15 or 16 years ago, and still does, everytime I listen to it. This is my go-to song for every moment of my life, from the great achievements to the lowest points, such as today, for I am heartbroken after a breakup. I remember that everytime it played in-game, it made me reflect about the life of the citizens in my town, and then about my own life, and then the universe and everything. I don't know, this song's just perfect. As someone else said 8 years ago in this same comment section, "this piece of art will go with me for the rest of my life"
I’m sure I’m in the minority here, but I love 0:00-1:40. That’s pure excellence right there, so it’s interesting to hear how many people love the drums as I always repeat the song once it hits 1:40.
This was always the one song where I'd have to stop and appreciate how hard this song goes. As someone who loves songs that build upon themselves, it's such a great moment when it all comes together. It scratches perfectly that itch you didn't know you had.
i remember watching a tractor on the road starting my new town just chugging along by the low industrial i made :') With this music piece going! The great memories.
I got this game back when it came out with the expansion in the same box. That feels like half a lifetime ago now. This and 3000 probably had me appreciate jazz the older I grew when I just wrote it off as old people music as a kid.
I found this song from a Gamemaker-made game called Cellular Scale Spore 4.0. The game is now dead and undownloadable, but this song will always have me remember it. RIP Cellular Scale Spore 4.0 2007-2012
Breaks my heart that youtube is going to delete your channel for inactivity. Thank you so much for allowing me to enjoy this tune so much over the years. 🍻
Extraordinary song! I got it in my cell phone. Gives me a vision of a shiney big but clean city with lots of tall buildings that harmoniously fits with one each other, and in front is the nice blue sea and the bay. It's relaxing, meditative and at 2:19 comes the enlightment then at 4:04 comes the optimism&prosperity&deliverance - a masterpiece! Thank's for posting!
i imagine this that i'm sitting on a bench looking at the beatiful bay, pouring out my problems and emotions with my friend. this song sometimes makes me cry.
I remember how happy i was when i found out that you could change the background music in this game, because i could listen to this song over and over again. it's absolutely gorgeous!
Thanks for sharing! This sounds like some Andreas Vollenweider of the late 1980's & 1990's. That is great music. I miss smooth jazz of that time! I don't care for much of what is out now, for it is clouded with bullshit lyric! Like soul! Smooth jazz of that time was talented by people who could play an instrument, not cloud it up with highly repetitious riffs & bullshit lyrics! Thank you for sharing!
I saw the song when I was watching this video made in 2007 when I was five called Spore cell phase Flash game. It was a really good video especially the music I was looking for the music for days or years years on end and now I finally found it I'm happy with myself I completed a goal.
This always played for me while my city was on slow, almost stagnant progress and I was looking for the way to get things back into high gear. This was always a bit of a downer for me because either cities made it or broke it during that time, and I was always winding down to get off. :c It is relaxing, though, and I'm sad I can't fully appreciate as such because it's so melancholy to me. (Also it played when I looked at my marine-based sections, but that might be why it's called "By the Bay".)
Its been 8 years. Coronavirus has taken over. Companies like EA are munching peoples money, and the quality of video games and their music have gone down dramatically. Can I please go back to your time period when i was happy? :/
I remember when I was a kid, me and my dad used to play this game. And since I was really bad at English and planning stuff, my cities always used to go bankrupt.
@Pilot853 Yeah! That's what I love in SimCity and The Sims, that they have so tasteful and original musics that make the good atmosphere of the game. Every SimCity game is different musically!
@jerrymartinmusic I just love "Floating Population, the one song where you do the rapping noises... And well... It just all adds to the atmosphere.... :D I can't wait to have a super region someday!

Might as well call this song By the (Tampa) Bay

Yes...this has to do with the flow of time. Haha

Your comment and this track playing in the background, bring me back in time 15 years ago when I was playing this game. Amazing memories.

That is a very deep interpretation of the song! Twelve years later, but thanks for sharing it here in the comments.

The climax of the track! ^^

Perfect music for a perfect game.
This song is so beautiful...
SimCity 4 is truly a Masterpiece by Maxis Employees
And suddenly EA fired them all and hired a crappy workers

Also their first Sims games were great, they also had similar great vibe with good humor as well, these games were so much fun to get into.

What an awesome song, couldn't find anything like it in sim city 5.
That organ in the background is great.
Loved walking outer borough backroads to this under baking hot summer suns, step by step towards my utopic now.
Pure perfectness. One of my greatest musical fantasies: The composer (Jerry Martin, lots of respect) went on a tour! Would be so awesome...
SC3K and SC4 always the best.....i have just replayed the SC3K Ulimited recently, Desert Sand is great~
Definitely one of my favorite Sim City 4 songs (they're all great). My mind went "oh, hell yeah!" when I realized it was this one.

I love the laid-back tempo; it gives the song a relaxing groove that goes well with its quiet, melancholy intensity.
I love how this song progresses and becomes more complex as it goes on. Whenever I play the game this is the song I always change it to.

I like this feature. Not many games allow you to do this.
@jerrymartinmusic Great job, Mr Martin - this is a phenomenal soundtrack!!!!
The best song in SC4 :)
This piece gets into my head randomly once a week! Love it!
It's a master piece this track, it's stressful and calming at the same time... got damnit who divided by zero?!
A strangely rhapsodical yet tranquil composition :)
That guitar really makes this work.
Everything makes it work, but yeah, the guitar adds a nice modern and 'edgy' tone to it. All of it is amazing.
I'm glad the Simcity soundtrack is used in many Civilization 4 mods. It fits the game very well.
