    I concur, I did similar calculations with my M240i, not over as many miles as your data but over several refills I got similar results. Always within 1 or 2 mpg but generally the trip computer was on the generous side. Good to know it's reasonably accurate.

    Very interesting! Think my M140i averaged around 26 (on the computer) when it went back with almost 10k on the clock. Unfortunately the M2C is currently reading 20.8mpg from new, using your workings out that means it is actually only averaging bang on 20mpg! One major problem with the S55! Happy New year Mark

      On MPG, I can't say. What I do know is that a friend's B58 engined 440i running standard 95 ran at Surrey Rolling road, and Charlie immediately called him out on running "crap fuel". That's enough for me to keep running 99.

    I give this one a BIG thumbs up! I did a similar test on my 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 4 WD 5.3 liter V-8.
    While towing my tandem axle job trailer I normally get just 8 to 9 miles pr. gallon. I am testing out a gasoline catalyst that claims to clean the carbon deposits out of your engine and off the sensors, increase octane and improve MPG and performance.
    There is another question I would like to ask. My truck also has a "Fuel Range" feature that shows how far you have left to go on the fuel that is in the tank. I would assume it calculates this based on past performance. I wonder how far back it goes to calculate this? Do you know?

    Interesting results. I will be checking my new m235i when I fill it up but sadly the computer is saying it’s doing only 22mpg!!
    Most my other cars have been between 2-3 mpg higher than the real figure so I’m hoping the m235i is better.
    My old e36 m3 I had years ago you could calibrate the trip computer to get it almost 100% accurate which was good.

  • @rickbessex1969

    Can you check your trip computer and move it to metric see what the liters per hundred kilometers are? I have a feeling that this measures imperial gallon mpg. And our friends in America are looking at, on their trip computer, a imperial mpg, even though they’re thinking it’s a US gallon mpg.

    I do a fill to fill comparison a few times when getting a new car just to get a feel for how accurate the on board computer is and then I don't bother from then on so admire your fastidiousness . Just flicked back to your RS costs and looked at the MPG there which was interesting. Also having recently purchased a MK8 Fiesta ST I looked at your mpg figures for your MK7, I'm getting just over 30 mpg at present and the onboard is about 10% out.

    • @MarkCup70

    I find my '17 M140i also fairly accurate on the indicated mpg. I have also recorded every fill for the last 30K miles and my average is just short of 35mpg, also a manual. I live out of town in the country and consequently very few of my miles are stop start city driving, makes a difference.

    • @MarkCup70

      Another manual owner, nice 👍 Mine could easily get better MPG, my commute is quite free of congestion, and it's braking that uses fuel. I'm just a little too fond of my LSD and the loud pedal 🤣

    My Golf IV speedometer is fairly accurate and the MPG trip computer is also accurate (verified with GPS and manual mpg “checks”). Of course it is slightly off as expected but it actually shows worse mileage via the trip computer versus what I measure.

  • @arianeproton101
    @arianeproton101 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, I also do the nerdy thing and log all fuel purchases - been doing so for years. Here's one of them - Golf GTI 1.8T from 2000 to 2016 - mpg from fuel used (114976 miles, 3450 gallons) is 33.3. MPG from on-board computer data is 35.9 - difference is 2.63 mpg, margin of error, is 7.9%. And, it's consistent - the standard deviation around the 7.9% is 2.8%.

    It would be nice to see how accurate the pumps are that you're using. They could be adding to the discrepancy you see. I'm sure there's a legal amount the pumps are allowed to be off by, and I am sure petrol stations are overestimating at least as much as they can get away with. How often are pumps calibrated? How far can they be out of calibration? How much can a pump vary with temperature change? All questions part of the same equation. Interesting finding, 2.5% is very good but perhaps it is 1.5% actual due to pumps being off, or maybe even closer?

    • @MarkCup70
      @MarkCup70  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think pump calibrations are quite tightly controlled and regulated...as if not it could/would be open to massive abuse. Fuel volume with temperature changes could certainly be a factor. Enough to make a difference here...? I've no idea!

    So I did an experiment in my 2019 standard model the other day. Over a 110 mile journey, mostly dual carriage ways and A roads using eco pro and comfort modes and prem ul fuel I averaged 34 mpg. This was driving pretty much as conservatively as possible. My commuting averages average 20-21. • @Gadne92.5
    @Gadne92.5 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you factored in the odometer error, usually around 2-3% off - same with the speedometer error. Odometers aren't 100% accurate either. Lets say odometer shows you drove 300 miles with one tank of fuel and the truth is something like 295 actual miles. Now you calculate your MPG manually with that 300 mile reading. Those small differences do factor into the (especially long term) MPG readings which drivers calculate themselves. Just saying.
