    People mistake Ned Stark's calm demenor as the standard Stark behaviour, but Ned Stark is actually an outlier, an exception if you will, probably why they call him the silent wolf or the shy wolf. Starks are harsh, brutal, reckless, and very very dangerous - with an over-inflated sense of what is right and wrong. All of Ned's children except Sansa and maybe Bran (very debatable) embolden this normal Stark attitude. All of Ned's other siblings as well.

      Ned's calm demeanour isn't what separates him from other Starks. Some Starks like Alaric were cold and distant. What separates Ned from his ancestors is his mercy, his refusal to sacrifice the few in favour of the many. If someone like Cregan Stark or Rodrik Stark had been put in his position after Robert's death, he would have struck immediately, taking charge of the children and securing the castle. Instead Ned waited until the King was dead and warned Cersei in advance that he was going to pass the crown to Stannis.

      Ned learnt from his older brother and father, his older brother who hanged himself in a cell trying to escape and his father who was set alight by the mad king all rushed in without a second thought. Stark hotheads died with them. Sansa is calculating bran sees everything traits the starks needed but lacked. rob didn't have foresight like his brother Bran if he did he would be alive. As we saw in the battle of the bastards being a hot headed stark will get you killed if Sansa didn't show up the boltons would of claimed victory.

    To sum up most Northerners opinion of the Starks, I’ll give you this quote said by an unnamed Liddle in ASOS:
    “When there was a Stark in Winterfell, a maiden girl could walk down the kingsroad in her name-day gown and still go unmolested, and travelers could find fire, bread, and salt at many an inn and holdfast. But the nights are colder now, and doors are closed ... It was different when there was a Stark in Winterfell. But the old wolf's dead and young one's gone south to play the game of thrones, and all that's left us is the ghosts.”

    A lot of the audience get this dissonance with how savage and brutal Stark History was. Even I sometimes have to remind myself that Ned was an outlier since he was fostered in the Vale.

    • @notyourproblem474
      @notyourproblem474 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      And also because Cat was a Tully that worshipped the new gods. She raised her children in a very southern way, Sansa is the best example. And sometimes even Robb had tendencies of this, although not that many. Ned literally built the first temple ever to the new gods in Winterfell, just for his wife. The kids were born with the option to choose which religion they wanted to follow. But I don't think Cat would've given them any chance. The girls even had a Septa.

    • @aicchi1234
      @aicchi1234 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      @@notyourproblem474 I agree with most of this, though Cat definitely gave them a choice for religion as I'm quite sure that Ned would not stand for Cat shunning the Old Gods in his own home. The septas were more for teaching the girls ways of the southron ladies. But yes, this generation of Starks are way more Southron than the usual thanks to Ned marrying into the Tullys and Ned himself being exposed to the Arryns/Bobby B in his younger years.

    The Starks biggest mistake was allowing the Boltons to bend the knee they should have wiped out the entire bloodline
    Edit... The Boltons had more than enough chances to change their ways and bend the knee, but they kept returning to flaying and wearing the skins of dead Starks, no matter how many chances the Starks gave them they wanted Winterfell and the North for themselves... leaving the Starks only one choice which unfortunately they failed to carry out with Ned as head of the family...now had that been Brandon what was left of the Boltons would have now been displayed outside the Dreadfort as a warning to other houses that don't honour their words of fealty

  • @dromankass8655
    @dromankass8655 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +47

    I was always rather suspicious about the Blackwood claim that they were driven out of the North by the Starks. Houses remember ancient insults and feuds and pass them down from father to son like a good wine. Look at how the Manderleys recall how House Peak drove them from the Reach, and in their time of need, the Starks took them in. That sort of thing is remembered.
    But the Blackwoods of Raventree Hall seem to have a good relationship with the Starks, fighting with the Blacks in the Dance of the Dragons, and joining their forces in both Robert's Rebellion and the Kingdom of the Young Wolf. No issue, no complaint, no 'hey, you drove us out of the Wolfwood and forced us to live down south, and we remember.'
    But there is none of that, and their are certainly more loyal than the Brakens, as Raventree was one of the last castles to hold out for the Starks even after the Red Wedding, and even after Rivenrun had surrendered to Jamie. So I think that the Blackwoods had a more amicable agreement with the Starks and left the North for some other reason and the tale of them being driven out is just a cover. Perhaps they went South on the orders of the Starks to secure some ancient sites of the First Men or the Children. They are rather close to both the God's Eye and the Isle of Faces, and Old Stones, not to mention that massive weirwood they build their hall around . . .

    Definitely agree the Boltons shoulda been wiped out a long time ago. Just look at how loyal the Manderly house is. If the starks had taken a small house and raised them up in the place of the Boltons i’m sure they’d have lost a great enemy and made a very loyal friend. Who would protest?

    • @eliseotorres7958
      @eliseotorres7958 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Playing Devils Advocate,You never know what can happen tho, they might just raise a smaller house that can possibly defeat them or cause them more trouble in the future.
      Look at the Karstarks, they have mixed blood with the starks, practically kin. Yet that didnt stop them from betraying their kings trust (Rickard killing the boys unjustly, I understand the reasoning behind it still).
      In a generation or 2, best friends/family can turn into bitter enemies. Look at the fossoways.
      This is all a “what if” or “could be” of course, but better the devil you know than the devil you don’t i guess.
      I wouldve killed the boltons down to the babes, but thats knowing what i know as a reader lol.

  • @tim211292
    @tim211292 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +91

    my theory is that they were called the kings of winter because during winter they held the only viable lands to live, glass gardens (or possibly an earlier equivalent) and hot springs, so during winter time the starks helped the others in exchange for concessions. when summer came they all went back to their kingdoms but crossing the starks could mean being banned from safety next winter. the starks used their geographic location as a power move. once they controlled the north they no longer were just kings of the winter time but kings of the north.
    perhaps the times the boltons sacked winterfell was because they were banned from safety in the upcoming winter and decided to attack in order to secure safety for themselves, those winters would have been terrible and this is partially why the boltons are hated, the guys that fuck up winter for everyone do not go down well in history.
    on top of that, i have a theory about the boltons being starks that did not get the skinchanging powers. the bitterness meant they acted out the skinchanging literally by flaying starks and wearing them as a mockery and justice for the magic they didnt recieve.

  • @swetcan9268
    @swetcan9268 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

    personally i think the feud between the Boltons and the Starks after the Boltons bent the knee is greatly overstated. as far as we know the Boltons only rebeled 2 times in several thousand years. once with the Greystarks and another where the Dreadfort held for 2 years under seige until a peace was reached. other than that the Boltons have been quiet, and seemingly dutiful. fighting against the Arryns and the sistermen in the war across the water, and before that fighting alongside the Starks against the Andal invader Argos Seven star. they presumably marched with Torrhen Stark against Aegon the Conqueror. and Barba Bolton asked for food from Aegon III at the maidens da ball on behalf of the north.
    i think Roose Boltons actions can be best explained by Roose Boltons personality moreso than any enduring Bolton-Stark Feud.
    compare this to actual rebellious houses, like the Greyjoys, Peakes, or Yronwoods. each which rebelled more than the Boltons in 300 years than they did over the course of thousands.

    The boltons lands should’ve been halved after the greystark rebellion. and the new land should’ve been given to someone loyal to them. That way that new house would be forever loyal to them and the boltons fighting strength would be reduced. The boltons would also have to split their focus on 2 houses instead of just house stark.

    Well he needed that, if they are not so horrified the today Starks would not be potrayed as an opposite.
    On the other hand Boltons even oppressed they have a right to fight.

    See this is why I dislike the current Starks in GOT.. They should rename themselves as Arryns, Especially that Ned Arryn instead of Ned Stark, who forgot every single part of his History and changed his and his Family's lifestyle influenced by Jon Arryn's Honour, whose House words is literally "As High as Honour"...
    The Starks are used to be just Dumb, Illiterate, Hotheaded Beings but with Terrible temper and Wild, Savage and Great Fighters, Builders and Leaders. Whereas the Current Starks in GOT are just honourable Fools with no Stomach for Brutality and Savagery that their Ancestors literally had for thousands and thousands of Years...

      No stomach for brutality? The starks use necessary brutality not excessive brutality. Enough to make an example for everyone, but not too much that everyone hates them. The starks are brutal, yes, even the modern starks with Ned forcing his children to watch him execute someone.
      Furthermore STARKS are not dumb, illiterate, hotheads. They are smart and understanding rulers who honor they're work and the people under them. The reason why so many people follow the starks to this day is because the STARKS HONOR AND UNDERSTAND THEIR DUTY. If you want an example of brutal rulers look at Tywin and the Boltons.
      Tywn was brutal, but the moment he died everyone around him suddenly wanted to kill the Lannisters because Tywin's brutality wasn't offset with honor or Charisma unlike the Starks.
      Boltons, their brutality had led to many distrusting them to a point that they needed outside help from the Frey's and the Crown to even have the ability to rule over the North, something the STARKS didn't need because the lords under them liked their honor and respected their way of justice.
