After 65 yrs of playing, it is rare that tears of joy come to my eyes when listening to jazz, but this gal did it. An original who gives honest homage to what has gone before while blazing her own trail. Andrews and Smith are top notch players who share and contribute to her vision. Anyone who says this is technical prowess is completely right… but this is the least of her gifts and abilities.

I bought her debut album about 15 years ago, and was impressed with her musicianship (both musicality and virtuosity), thinking that another talented pianist had emerged. But, I was wrong … well, sort of. “Another talented pianist” now seems to be understatement. As many comments on her vids say, she has become among the greatest jazz pianists of all time, or perhaps even the very best already. With no sheet music or charts, she just improvises like crazy whether with a rhythm section or on her own. Back in the 70’s, I admired Keith Jarrett's solo piano performances, but sometimes found them a bit pedantic or self-indulgent or even boring. But not so at all with Hiromi - her solo performances are always innovative, melodic and enchanting. Hiromi already showed her versatility on her 1st album, and I liked it. But versatile musicians often fail to establish their own sound and end up being just one of them. Well, again it’s not the case with Hiromi. She is a great pianist with a sense of improvisation. Her style is a mixture of a bit of Chick Correa, Keith Jarrett and Herbie Hancock. Great performance of the trio!
Had the pleasure of meeting Steve Smith when he appeared in Wilkes Barre, about 10 years ago....at the time I was smittened by the fact that he was at one time with Journey....he became such an incredibly talented jazz drummer in the following years, and continuing to present....the guy is great....love Hiromi as well.
He was a schooled Fusion and Jazz drummer coming out of Berklee. He was playing with Jean Luc Ponty, then Montrose, then while Ronnie Montrose was opening for Journey, Aynsley Dunbar and Journey parted ways and Steve stepped in. After Journey he played a lot of varied gigs and then formed Vital Information. He has never stopped learning and is one of the best drummers on Earth today
I've been waiting for 50 years to find someone I could love as much or more than Dizzy Gillespie. Hiromi has delivered my waiting. Evolution of Art Forms take time. Hiromi could not come after Dizzy Gillespie until certain things happened in the world. When Dizzy did his first two decades many things happened. the first Jet Aircraft, the Diesel locomotives took over from the Steam Locomotives, the first space ships, the very first missions to Mars. Now after 50 more years enough new stuff has happened. There has been Train Systems built that travel 300 miles per hour. We are on the cusp of new Electric Automobile Technology. There has been so many missions to Mars that the Scientists say, we know the surface of Mars better than we know the Earth's surface. We have discovered at least ten thousand Extrasolar Planets. The World became ready for the wonderful Hiromi.

Hiromi c'est la folie créatrice, le talent a l'état pur, c'est incontestablement l'un des très grands noms du jazz contemporain, et ce n'est que le début !!
Speaking from the perspective of an older guy, nobody played like this when I started bass in the fifties. I like it, it carries the listener away and that's what good music does. I guess I got hooked when I first heard "Desert on the Moon" a few years back.
@@farshimelt Yes, every generation has favorites and I think it should be that way. But I get a nice feeling when I hear comments from a young person who is discovering some of the tunes from past generations.

Hiromi, not only do you excel in composing such exhilarating jazz but you also have an uncanny knack of selecting the perfect personnel to complete your trio! Big fan of AJ & SS myself. Such a thrill to see musicians so into their craft and so in sync with each other. An absorbing and enthralling performance - bravo!
As a drummer, it is really interesting for me to hear her play with Steve Smith as opposed to Simon Philips. I am a big fan of Philips playing and sound, but he is clearly more a rock guy than a jazz guy whereas Smith is the opposite. They are both great, of course, but the affect on the music is noteworthy.
I saw this trio with Simon and the 'trouble' was that Simon brought along his rock kit, along with Octobans. In playing drums since I was 13, 40 years ago, and knowing of Octobans since all that time, have yet to hear them played in context in any situation - yet Simon insists on hitting those darn things ! In Simon's defence though, I can't think of any drummer that would really, really fit in this gig, oh, I have....... Vinnie :)
I saw the "trio project" and I was very disturbed by Philips' drumming!! It was so intense that I could hardly hear Hiromi and Jackson not at all! I had the impression that I was at a drum concert not a piano concert.
Oh my god, I first discovered Hiromi's music through her album , it is so genius. And this live... I immediately get goosebumps!!!!!!!!! Cannot describe my excitement!!!!

@@pwilll don't feel silly - you were correct. It is I've Got Rhythm that she's playing, but she briefly quoted Rhapsody in Blue at the timestamp you gave.
Thank goodness Hiromi doesn't let the comment section dictate who is or isn't a proper drummer for her. I wouldn't have gotten to see her incredible, unbeatable trio with the incredible Simon. People who are deep into one particular genre, are often, sadly, pretty closed minded when it comes to musicians that are not bound by their old school expectations. I'm so glad to be completely unconcerned with genres and focused instead on just the beauty of music, with the criteria that if it sounds good, it is good. So far, every single line up I've heard Hiromi with, has sounded fantastic. I consider her one of the great musical geniuses of the present, and her judgement about who to hire, unlike her "the rock drummer doesn't sound jazz enough" fans, impeccable.

Amazing & mesmerizing, as always, thank you @SalComuna for posting. Only three things to say: 1) FYI, I have been disappointed when she rarely seemed to play older album material (except a few crowd pleasers like "Champion" & "Return of"), but I recognized the final two numbers here, they are off her first album (2003), & in looking back at the liner notes I had forgotten Anthony Jackson played on a few tracks on that album, including "Dancando" & "Joy"; 2) I knew she would be a superstar when I saw her on her first tour in 2003, but I never guessed I'd see her starring in the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games! 3) I am over the moon & on cloud nine that I will see her Friday night in New York City, 2nd show at Sony Hall, reserved VIP seating, because once she became such a big star she doesn't do so many shows in the US, & I haven't seen her in person since 2012; 4) [Okay, okay, I said three, but one extra little story...] at 2008 jazz festival, "Beyond Standard" had just come out, & I wanted a copy to listen to before the show; online I saw the Japan release had a bonus DVD, so I ordered it & it arrived the day before the show; when I was getting it signed by the band after the show, I handed it to Tony Grey, he looked at it & asked, "Hey, is this the Japan release with the DVD? Damn! We don't even have that yet!" I was floored (& pretty impressed with myself, as a matter of fact still insufferably smug about it to this day...wouldn't you be?).

Yeah it's pretty cool
She’s just having so much fun, clearly a natural musician and virtuoso. When you see a great player enjoy their time with the music it really becomes a different experienc for the better.
Hiromi - Amazing
Wow... the whole trio sounds revamped. Not only because of a substituted drummer and his new, refreshing feel on each of the tunes, but also because both Hiromi and Anthony have greatly evolved in their playing. Words cannot describe how amazing this is.
sotrue
so true
Michael Kang This performance has my favorite version of Flashback. And alot of that is due to Steve Smith's drumming.
Simon Philips sounds better on the drum imo
I like his feel as well, it feels like he's more hooked in with his percussion work. He provides a perfect rhythmic platform at the head and just gets more and more detailed with delightful fills and subtle but complicated playing.

I think it is Illusion not Delusion...
@@lidialoschiavo8725 The song is actually Delusion but it sounded like she said Illusion
Yeah
Second movement.
AJ’s tone sounds phenomenal in this show particularly
This Trio is best with Steve Smith.. Simon Phillips is an excellent drummer it's just that Steve is a master jazz drummer and I feel like he's able to connect with Hiromi more.. Absoutely incredible!! She is THEE best musician in the world!!
Wonderful Trio.....Steve & Anthony are monsters.
words can not express ... just listen :)

Hiromi is the only pianist that I feel is carrying and even evolving Chick Corea’s legacy. My favorite musician alive today. One of those that come a few times in one’s lifetime.
Kia Ora from Aotearoa - this is not the body language of a technician - this is the mastery of artistic expression at the highest level
I've clicked through so many videos, through so many incredible, weird ambient landscapes... I feel like I'm going on a train trip, seeing a succession of crazy, never-before-seen scenes from history, important, weird musics through the window as I pass.. there's so much to explore. So many places to alight and dwell in the ambiences that are on offer. This stop, in particular, is brilliant 💖
只々驚異としか言い様がない。これ程の音の羅列を、完璧に芸術に仕立て上げた。
日本の宝の一つ等という狭い根性を離れて、人類の宝と呼ぼう。
What a gifted woman...and in great company....clearly she is a huge Corea fan... :-)
I do not tire listening to this incredible musician. She blows me away.
Me too
She is very special in a most special way! Love her & what she does...
She is a great pianist with a sense of improvisation. Her style is a mixture of a bit of Chick Correa, Keith Jarrett and Herbie Hancock. Great performance of the trio!
Great music: joyfulness, introspection, technique, lyric, all togehter, complex and simple at the same time, simply amazing
Слов нет!... просто Великие Музыканты!!!Концерт шикарный!!! Звук волшебный! Спасибо!!!
If you need spiritual uplifting please listen to this. So heavy. What a gift to this earth Hiromi is!
Her playing does things to me I cannot describe
This is an incredible experience, and I am so happy that this full performance is documented so well and I'm able to experience it now
Any word to compliment this video is an understatement . Its simply too good to be true
This must be a harmony of the cosmos. I am very happy now.
big up Hiromi et acolytes ... super jazz, grand talent, Génie du piano !
I'm so amazed that these musicians can perform with this much enegery for such an extended period of time.

Superhumanly gifted & the two guys are absolutely great too!
The Drums Sound Magnificent and so does everyone Love You Hiromi The Bass is Awsom.
Bravo!!!!!!....esse trio é fantástico. Amei conhecê-lo.
Speaking from the perspective of an older guy, nobody played like this when I started bass in the fifties. I like it, it carries the listener away and that's what good music does. I guess I got hooked when I first heard "Desert on the Moon" a few years back.
In the 50's there was Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum and others. They didn't play LIKE this but they played as well.
@@farshimelt Yes, every generation has favorites and I think it should be that way. But I get a nice feeling when I hear comments from a young person who is discovering some of the tunes from past generations.
@@nemo227 Yes. that's what keeps the music alive.
I have high quality speakers here and guys, the bass sounds great! I love how he mixes the pick and the fingers. Great great sound.
AJ always sounds first class. An original voice.
Just appreciating her compositional genius and relevance alone puts her in an elite league ….and what a trio on top of this …keep coming back to this concert and will do for many years
Hiromi Uehara i love your playing you motivates me to practice much harder
Hiromi, not only do you excel in composing such exhilarating jazz but you also have an uncanny knack of selecting the perfect personnel to complete your trio! Big fan of AJ & SS myself.
Such a thrill to see musicians so into their craft and so in sync with each other. An absorbing and enthralling performance - bravo!
What the eff did I stumble on to! This is AMAZING!
Karn Kaul
Yup, my cheeks have grin-ache.
Thank God 🙏for Anthony Jackson give this trio some sense of FEELING 🙏
As a drummer, it is really interesting for me to hear her play with Steve Smith as opposed to Simon Philips. I am a big fan of Philips playing and sound, but he is clearly more a rock guy than a jazz guy whereas Smith is the opposite. They are both great, of course, but the affect on the music is noteworthy.
try martin valihora as well. the old guy on drums with sonicbloom and the old trio!
+Jez2008UK Vinnie Colaiuta? hmm would be interesting..i hope so..someday in the future..
Yohanes Adi Nugroho
manu katche would be nice or valihora again as in earlier days. but not simon philips.
Oh my god, I first discovered Hiromi's music through her album , it is so genius. And this live... I immediately get goosebumps!!!!!!!!! Cannot describe my excitement!!!!
Hiromi... you are a poet, with this piano ... write poems embroidering them, at that moment that I'm listening to you, I wish you the best
J'aime cette personnalité.
Elle vit sa musique avec passion.
Epoustouflant et magique.
Anthony Jackson! That man will be 100 years old one day and will still be laying down some sick bass chops!
and some heavy lower lip...
GristleLicker: Let us hope you're right, but tragically he had a stroke in 2016.
He won't...died unfortunately
51:55 She really snuck rhapsody in blue in here! Incredible! Absolutely one of my favorite jazz pieces ever!!
Also just looked it up and George Gershwin also has a song called "I've got rhythm!" She must be a fan :)
the song shes playing is ive got rhythm by george gershwin
@@samuelwilson818 well now I feel silly
It's amazing what this girl can do on a keyboard. Her technique, feeling and expressiveness, make her a fascinating and unique musician in the current scene. I hope I can see her live one day
Her pure joy is clearly infectious. Thanks for posting this.
À peine croyable de pouvoir s'amuser autant avec une telle intensité de génie ! le batteur la suit merveilleusement !
Love how playful her interpretation of "I got rhythm" is... wow
Thank goodness I heard this song on local jazz station. Hiromi is the bomb! 🎉
This woman brings sheer joy and beauty to the world! She makes you enjoy for a brief moment that life might be worth it after all!
Absolutely awe inspiring... so so beautiful, thank you 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I just discovered Hiromi asking Chat GPT about some japanese jazz artist that have classical music influences and it recommended me her. perfect!
I'd watch from the start to the end. First time for me , never heard of them before. Simply full atraction, absolutely amazing! Bravissimi! Hiromi, you're a music star!
Try to find Hiromi playing the Palchabel's canon in D...
Wow, she is a genuine talent...a gifted pianist by all means!
I wish I can go to a Hiromi concert. It will be so awesome to watch her play and listen to her music.
I just discovered this band. How are her fingers not on fire? Wow!
She is incredible wow! One thing is for sure, she has good taste in drummers Steve Smith here on this video and usually Simon Phillips who kills it on her stuff ! and we can't leave out the one and only Anthony jackson laying in down on bass . bravo!!!
I wonder how she selects them.
I believe Steve Smith was subbing for Simon on this gig coz Simon couldn't make it due to sickness.
How can anyone be this talented, it is just incredible. Speechless
so many time i think about steve smith playing the compositions of hiromi, incredible!
Ma chi è? Questa è di un altro pianeta.visione musicale a 360 gradi!!gruppo restante favoloso.grandi musicisti!!

This young woman is phenomenal !!!!
Tremendo swing
Trío perfecto excelente...
Ohhh my god. She is so fun to watch and her technique is simply phenomenal!!! Well, with such sidemen!!!
If there is one person on earth that got rhythm, it's her
Exciting, uplifting virtuoso music, thank you for playing it!
