Some factual clarifications.
1. Kingfisher purchased Air Deccan because the former wanted to fly international routes asap, which at that time was only allowed for an airline that had completed 5 years of Domestic Operations - this is what Air Deccan was completing soon or had completed. Also, some rules permitted the acquirer of such airline to start international routes. Hence Kingfisher hurried to acquire Air Deccan. Yes I agree Kingfisher was a bit extravagant and flamboyant in its approach and this greatly contributed its losses. It dreamt big but didn't get the kind of resources on time and some also suggest a foul play in it getting preferences in profitable routes or getting basic routes on time.
2. Sahara was going down solely because of the problems the whole group was going through and at that time it had just started international routes. Jet Airways later renamed the Air Sahara fleet to Jet-Lite, rebranded to take on the onset of LCCs. Some argue Jet got a very sweet deal in this purchase as its was a distress sale.
3. Spice Jet also had some very bad quarters in late mid of last decade but it made a terrific comeback thanks to rejoining of some key management but this good time lasted till Covid hit the sector hard.
4. It is notable that we perhaps have one of the lowest average fare per mile. This is also not healthy for airlines in the long-term. While US has very low fares, there are many routes that are quite far and airplanes can get to a height where fuel savings kick-in. Also, the operating cost of old airlines and propeller planes is low and these planes are made pretty durable so maintenance cost is also low. We have new planes and one of the highest costs on the ground at key airports. Hence all this adds up to cost in a price sensitive market.
5. LCCs abroad are very strict on terms of weight one can carry, some even charge for check-in baggage and they have a steep add-on charge list. Also many of them use very old planes that come at a low lease though can be a bit expensive to fly fuel wise. LCCs here have mostly new planes hence high on lease and some are becoming hybrid now with offering mid-way services of a full-service so some costs here are rising.

Good Load Factor, right ticket prices, minimum AOG( good fleet management), efficient management - all these are key ingredients for the airline to be profitable.
Example of ticket prices - a super apex fare of Jet Airways in 2002 for MAA - BOM was 2.7k while an open ticket (Yclass) was priced at approx 6.5k.
In 2019, one could easily get a ticket on the same sector for 3.5k with some planning and a last minute ticket for 8k tops.
Compare fuel prices in 2002 vs 2019.
Air ticket prices are still too low - no airline can be profitable in this model.
People have enough money to pay more for air travel. You can't offer air tickets for roughly the same as rail and expect to have a good bottomline.

The same thing has been happening in the Telecom sector.Aircel/R.Com closed down,some other companies like Loop/Systema/Uninor etc closed down even without commercially launching their services in make circles even after installing their sites in many of those circles.
