Celias husband finds out about Minnie a LOT sooner in the book. And he sincerely could not have cared less that Minnie was there. He just wanted Celia to be happy with him. Celia literally had her keeping up the ruse even when he knew, and she knew he knew.
While Minnie did leave Leroy, it left out why: Hillys husband got him fired over the book, and he locked her in the bathroom and threatened to burn the house down with her in it. She escaped, took the kids and made a run for the nearest gas station. She went to the country to live with her sister.
I was really hoping Minnie and the kids would move in with Celia. It's possibly foreshadowed earlier in the film - Minnie points out that Celia has a lot of space in the house to fill - and if Celia can't have kids, then perhaps taking in Minnie's family is a good solution. But I guess that's an unrealistic situation in the south in the 1960s, even for such a progressive couple as Celia and Johnny.
@@Yassmiinn.I live in the south, a lot of properties had living quarters for “the help”. And that is a plantation property Celia and Johnny are supposed to be on in the film, it wouldn’t have been that far-fetched. They also don’t seem to give a 💩. Unless it’s to Hilly 😂
20:00. In case anyone is curious, $600 in 1963 (when this movie takes place) would be about $6,100 in 2024, which means the 13 maids who got about $46 each then would be about $470 each in 2024.
The reason that Minnie Didn’t like Celia touching and hugging her and giving her Coke was because it was basically illegal to touch Fair skinned people back in the back and you could get killed or seriously harmed by doing so
Wait, really? Hmm, I always assumed it was because Minnie wasn't used to being hugged, considering every other maid/parent work relationship wasn't as pure as Celia and Minnie's.
Well if we look at how the other Maids interact with the their women. None of them touch them or hug them. And when Minnie teaches Sugar the rules of being a maid, she tells them that when they prepare the Tea she HAS to place it in front of the family member, their hands. CANNOT touch. Have a separate utensil and plates for everything. So when Celia hugged her she didn’t know what to do out of fear and confusion.
For the second half of the book, Minnie is pregnant. This is relevant because they mention that her husband never hits her when she's pregnant. Also: towards the end, she has Sugar start working for Celia so she can take over when Minnie has to go on maternity leave.
Things you may not notice 1. Hilly have babies and make pressure for everyone else to do the same, which leads to Elizabeth, just a girl and not ready for motherhood, a mother with baby blues. 2. Hilly's bathroom initiative put unnecessary economic strains to a lot of white families, and it's represented by Elizabeth's arguments with her husband. It doesn't affect her because she's wealthy. But middle class family like Elizabeth is much more affected. 3. Hilly is a GOOD friend (protect Skeeter from Jolene's back-handed comments, side with her against her mother's degrading words, believing in her and hit her up with Stuart), but a BAD person and I'm glad Skeeter didn't dismiss Hilly's bs just because she's been kind to her.
I only found out through the comments Minnie's ending was a bit different (or at least there was more to it than the movie showed). I've never read the book but I adore the movie. I always felt the movie implied Minnie and her kids were taken in by Celia and her husband (since earlier in the movie Celia mentioned something about the big dining table and bedrooms she'd never fill and at the end Minnie comes to a set table that Celia had prepared for her). It gave me that lovely warm idea of Minnie still working there but her kids living there too in order to fill those bedrooms and give Celia the joy of having kids around despite not being able to have any of her own. At least this was how I always imagined it hahaha.
Skeeters real name is Eugenia. The nickname stuck when she was born, and she was considered an ugly baby, and her brother said, "That's no baby, its a skeeter!"
Heres the bitter truth about the toilet prank: Hilly wound up selling them all to people who wanted to get a separate bathroom for their help, for a lower price. So basically the prank not only backfired, it had the exact opposite effect. Which Hilly made a point to tell Skeeter in front of everyone at the benefit.
In the book Rachel, the daughter or the maid Skeeter grewup with, had a different story. She was white passing (a past relative,I don't remove who,was white) so her mother had to give her away because it would have been to difficult to explain or she could have been in teouble for having a "white" chikd with her and also to five her a better life. They had reunited and when Rachel showed up she acted friendly to the club members and wanted to join. Skeeter also didn't know she had a daughter so she was shocked when she found out. Skeeter was devastated that the woman that was another mother figure to her was fired and later got sicker (since she had moved to go live with Racgel but she couldn't stend the change in climate) and died and she didn't know that,no one told her and she didn't know where she was even buried.
Skeeter and Stuart got waaaaaaaay more serious in the book. She told him about the book the day before it hit the shelves, and Stuart was even planning on proposing! She goes to the benefit by herself, and shes treated like a complete pariah.
NO they didn't lol. He did propose, but she said she couldn't accept it before she came clean, then he took his ring back and that was that. I don't think their relationship was THAT serious. He was still hung up on his ex Patricia
Celia isn't nice because she's ignorant. It's showing how different things are outside of Jackson and that Jackson is behind the times. Celia grew up in a different city so wasn't influenced by the girls in Jackson.
Well, I wouldn’t say ignorant is the right word. But I do think that she’s an idealist, with the belief that because you’re nice to people if they’ll be nice back to you.
Celia grew up poor in a trailer, so she knows first hand what working hard and being treated like shit is like, this gives her empathy for the maids because she herself was once in their position. Also, she's just naturally very nice and bubbly and treats everyone with kindness even when they don't deserve it like Hilly.
@@MoviesinDepthyou must also watch The Color Purple. But take heed. It's a very intense story and not for the weak of heart. You'll need a lot of mental preparation to watch it.
Hilly had a cold sore from the stress, a lot of the stuff going on in this story is linked directly to stress, like Skeeter's mom's illness or Celia's miscarriages.
Big thing with Abileen and Mae Mobley that was left out: Abileen would play games with her to teach her life lessons. Example: pretend to sit at a counter, and no matter what, you can't move. This was sometimes played with her brother, so he'd sit and shed throw stuff at him, or vice versa. But the objective is the same: no matter what's said or done to you, you can't move. Another thing to note is that Mae Mobley was also starting school in the book, and she had a seriously racist teacher. The whole thing came to a head when her dad caught her playing the above game, and angrily demanded she tell him who taught her the game. And she said it was her teacher!

This movie forever ruined my enjoyment of chocolate pie.....!😂 In case you're wondering why Celia Foote kept losing her babies, it's actually a pretty easy to fix problem. Her cervix is too thin, so when the fetus reaches a certain weight, it just falls out. But all the doctor has to do is sew it up once pregnancy is confirmed, and remove the stitches at 36 weeks. I'm a nurse, so wanting to cure even fictional characters is an occupational hazard.
The book implies Celia's miscarriage issue was stress-related, she can't deal well with life in Jackson and all that is expected from her having married the richest man in town, Hilly and Elizabeth's constant abuse and having a terrible diet making it even worse, in the end having Minnie (And later Sugar) work for her and be her friends gives her a respite from all the tension and she eventually gives birth to many healthy children.
