Please consider reacting to THE GREAT DEBATORS. Denzel Washington directs and stars in it. It's a historical drama about the debate team at Wiley College (a HBCU) who challenged Harvard... based on a true story.
The actress who plays Constantine is Cicely Tyson a really famous talented actress; she died two years ago.
I grew up poor as shit and joined the military, what is this white privlege BS?
I would also highly recommend the movie Hidden Figures
George Harrison is my favorite Beatle.
The baby situation always turns my stomach and shatters me. She was the sweetest soul. She deserved so much better but he was an amazing husband to her. They were better than all of those waspy idiots.
Ironically, I know exactly what was wrong with Celia Foote, and it was easily fixed even back then. Her cervix was too thin, so when the fetus reached a certain weight, it just falls out. All they had to do was have a doctor sew it up, once pregnancy is confirmed, then remove the stitches at 35 weeks. Voila, a healthy baby.
One of the occupational hazards of being a nurse is always wanting to just jump into movies and books and "fix" everyone's medical issues. 😊😢
I would seriously be friends with Celia Foote! I liked her!
I don’t know if this is entirely true, but it’s suggested that all the stress Celia was going through (as well as drinking coke on a pretty regular basis) is what caused it. So hopefully, she managed to have children later on now that it seems like she’s much healthier
Celia Foote was an amazing character in this movie. I love the fact that that she was the only person outside of Skeeter that treated Minnie like her equal instead of like a house cleaning machine.
How do you know this? Was it mentioned in the book? I know it's a real medical condition some women have, but how do we know this was Celia's exact problem? Miscarriages happen for all sorts of reasons. @@isoldejaneholland8370
Fun fact: Since you guys were curious about Aibileen's next move. In the book, she actually goes on to write the housekeeping column for the local newspaper.
since nobody told you yet, THANK YOU! I really needed this clossure :_)
Omg thank you!
Whoo! Yes!
I didn't know this either. That's great!
Wow. What an amazing woman. She kept herself busy.
44:34. In case anyone is curious, $600 in 1963 (when this movie takes place) would be about $5,900 in 2023, which means the 13 maids who got about $46 each then would be about $450 each in 2023.
Tnx for this!
wow thank you. i'm from France so i don't know how dollars worked back then
So helpful thank you
But my question is, how long could you live with that. Was it enough for a whole month? Because 450 doesnt sound much.
@@realglutenfree… let’s put it like this in the South the average rent a month was approximately $50-$100…
So, it wasn’t much.
I love the fact that the 6 main actresses in this movie which are Jessica Chastain, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Allison Janney, Emma Stone and the one and only legendary Sissy Spacek are all Oscar winners ❤️
Cecily Tyson also had an honorary Oscar, a Presidential medal of freedom, Emmys, a Tony and many other awards. She was an amazing actress.
Personally I think Bryce Dallas Howard should've gotten a nod for this movie.
Agreed!!!!! Absolutely stellar. Viola Davis Sissy Spacek, Octavia Spencer……… ect
Ironically, she was TOO good at at depicting the horrible Hilly, and it may have counted against her. Hollywood might reward cartoonish monsters, like The Joker. But real-life "monsters," when there are thousands of them walking around, rarely or never.
Pretty sure Bryce Dallas Howard was more of a main actress in this than Allison and Sissy
“You’re a godless woman” that scene gave me goosebumps and I cry every time. What a performance
The little girl calling out to her shattered me. To her that was her mom, the one who had patience to deal with her and give her attention. Poor baby
I just want to say that people seem to not realize just how recent "Jim crow" laws were around. And even when these rules were abolished there were some cities who still practiced them unlawfully.
I was going to comment this, because I just lost my 96yo great grandmother and she was one of them. She was someone that lived through the vile way people treated them. And even sadder, it's not really any better now. Not by much.
It’s much better now, not with employed house help sadly like in this movie. But at least we don’t have armies of cops with dogs and fire hoses anymore my great grand parents were lynched for being an interracial couple. Their children lived because they hid in their barn, luckily they were very remote so no one knew they even had kids
Yup, at the 1994 crime bill divide and route and Kamala prosecuted prosecuted against. Then that's some what people vote for the worst crime bill in history of this country and biden wrote it
@@gigglebuggy Jackson in particular has barely moved the needle. In fact, they seem to keep inventing new ways to be cruel.
First of all, I'm sorry for your loss. I'm in my late 40s. My family is from a place called Dublin, GA, not too far from Atlanta. Both of my parents were born into Jim Crow. And it is certainly true laws may change but hearts and minds take much longer. @@gigglebuggy
When she tells the mother " you give my sweet baby a chance" always kills me.
For real dude! Thats what had me in tears. The poor baby lost her mom and her bio mom had the dang nerve to have another baby when she doesnt even give time and love to the first!
Ill never forget watching this film for the first time. Its one of those films you could watch over and over because of the acting alone. I still quote it to this day.
You is kind You is smart You is important ♥
How y’all recognize everyone but the legend herself Cicely Tyson 😂😂😂 12:32 She’s a great actress!
She was magnificent in this. Loved seeing her and Viola on screen together in the _How to Get Away with Murder_ tv series too.
Right! That hurt 😢😢
Paused to make this comment. Literally calling out every single actor from random movies/shows they've done and not recognizing the legendary actress with a 60-year career is so disheartening...but RIP Ms Cicely Tyson
Need to put some respect on Ms. Cicely Tyson's name! an absolutely legendary person. who also played viola's mother in how to get away with murder. RIP
Let's not forget about Fried Green Tomatos shes a legand and queen!
Yes, Those are good examples but are just supporting roles. I do hope people see her earlier work. She was a role model and inspiration for so many.@@huskerchickmissy
Aunjanue was not in The Color Purple. You’re thinking of Taraji P. Henson.
@@cuddilopes she played Celie’s mom in flashbacks
You is kind…you is smart…you is important. CUTEST QUOTE EVERRR
Yes ♥
But I can't understand why they left that mistake on , instead of " you are " ...
@@fabiencoze9829 it's not a mistake, that is the dialect, it is genuinely how some people speak and during that time especially. it's actually a rather amazingly well done detail
Emma was pretty well known by the time this film was released. She had already starred in Superbad, Easy A, Crazy Stupid Love (was released around the same time as The Help) and Zombieland. This film definitely put Viola, Jessica and Octavia on the map. All 3 received Oscar nominations, with Octavia winning. Viola also came close to winning Best Actress over Meryl that year. I think it was revealed she was in 2nd place.
cicely tyson is a phenomenal actress, she is one of my mom’s favorites and this movie is also one of her favorites, and It absolutely never fails to break my heart everytime, everyone in this movie is so good from top to bottom but especially cicely tyson, she is so good in this movie
The shit pie is what i always remember 😭😭
I really loved this movie. Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer gave us wonderful perfomances. Absolutely worth watching!
Honestly, it's not the first time I heard about a story like Minnie's revenge.
But she was right, that story was their only way to not being in trouble.
It's so sad that Johnny and Celia can't have children because they're the one who deserve it the most. I like to imagine that after Minnie left her husband, they asked her to live with them and considered her children as their own
In the book, if I remember correctly, Minny actually goes on to live with Celia and Johnny with all of her kids after she left Leroy (her husband) and I like to imagine that Celia and Johnny got to be with them kids as if they were their own 😢
Skeeters mom makes me sad because how many people probably were like that during the time knowing things were wrong but following others way because of your own fear or being judged which is such a shame
I always like to imagine that Minnie and her kids moved in with Celia and her husband. They certainly have the space, and if they have no kids of their own then they'd need to leave the property to someone.
I think they actually did in the book (it's been a while since I read it).
Sadly that's not the case, in the book she gets pregnant again.
@@PGros98 Minny gets pregnant, leaves Leroy and moves in with celia and brings all her kids
@@karen_c25 Don't think so, I just finished the book and it just said Minny moved in with her sister. But she did get the courage to leave Leroy partially because Johnny said Minny would have a job for life for saving Celias life.
Such an amazing film, the eat my s**t scene will forever be one of the funniest scenes in a film I have ever seen in my life 😂
For those wondering, Pie scene is at 38:30
Thanks!
I only just realised both Gwen Stacey's from the Tobey and Andrew movies are in this.
you just made me realize this too 😲
Wow, that's right 😂
I was happy that they were able to make Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard look very different. I often mistake them for each other but they couldn’t be more different in this film.
I don’t see the resemblance between the two women aside from they are both fair skinned redheads with freckles and blue eyes. Maybe it’s just me, but they don’t look alike at? 🤷🏾♀️
They all look the same to me.....😅
That was a great reaction ❤.
Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer & Sissy Spacek hit it out of the park with this one! Great performances!!
I heard that Viola Davis didn't like being in this movie because it didn't show the perspective of the maids but of the bosses, and that this movie was directed for the white audience and how they shouldn't act, and that Viola felt that the white characters became the heroes at the end of the film
Yup, she actively spoke out about how she regrets being in this film. And I don't blame her.
Now I feel bad for liking this movie so much. The book is still way better but I do like this movie. (Guilt starts crushing my back, like the average work day on my injured shoulder) 😢
@@truthseeker9249 For what it's worth I don't think you should feel bad, it's totally normal to sometimes enjoy stuff that is questionable, so long as we're cognizant of it ☺The criticisms are of merit but that doesn't mean it should take away from your own enjoyment of the film
@@sillyladtan you're very kind. 💓🤝
I don't follow how the white people were the saviors at the end of the movie? Some were allowed to have positive character arcs, but the only "savior" could be considered Skeeter. However, I'd argue that her role was necessary to the publishing of the book from the maids perspective and is a sort of "red herring" white savior. She had the contact in publishing and was able to get the book published. It doesn't mean she took credit for their work or anything like that. The book was even credited to "Anonymous". She simply provided a medium for the maids to tell their stories. My two cents anyway.
Constantine was played by the legendary Cecily Tyson . Her films include “Sounder”, “Roots” , and most famously, The Autobiography Of Miss Jane Pittman .
Older woman who laughed when she had the two slices of poop pie is academy award winner Sissy Spacek. She is famous for her portrayal of country singer Loretta Lynn. And she really sings in the movie which I think she sings better than the original. It's one of my favorite movies of all-time.
There's another great movie called ghost of Mississippi its one of my favorite movies its actually a true story and I feel like it's an amazing movie they actually talk about it in this movie its about medgar evars being shot in his driveway by a sniper, since i live in Mississippi we had to learn about this and we even watch the mivie in school, i also live near ole miss the school skeeter went to
3:44 - a lot, she had done Superbad, Drive, Zombieland, and she starred in Easy A
As the 1st generation after my mom and grandmother not being a maid in Mississippi, it gave a visual of how things worked, although I heard the stories my growing up. As an adult I have can see/understand alot more of things they went through and the weight of things I experienced growing up in Mississippi and N. Florida.
Racism 😢
30:53 - no, she is gathering information and then writing it up in a column. If other women would write columns and she would publish them under her name - that's stealing. But getting facts that no one besides her is interested in writing down - that's what journalists do.
The preacher is actually the actor who plays Martin Luther king jr. In the movie Selma!
Great reaction! 😊
Such a great movie with such a great cast. The book is fantastic as well.
38:30 - 39:44 The scene with pie is such a memorable scene.
Another movie that John & Roxy might enjoy that I very highly recommend is the 2016 movie "Hidden Figures", which is based on real people and events.
Looking forward to the next reaction. 😊
My take on this movie is that, despite her wrongdoings, Hilly is (or at least used to) be a good friend to Skeeter. She took her under her wings and socially "elevated" skeeter. I notice this from the fact that Skeeter didn't get asked out by anyone for the Dance and Hilly is dating Johnny. There is no way these two could be friends in any real time situation yet they are. Hilly encourage Skeeter to see past her mother's disappointments and approval (the comment on the "Stuart is absolutely coming this time" is a huge indication that Skeeter is burdened by that), she encourages her to get "good things" for her by setting things up between Skeeter and Stuart, her husband's cousin, which means that she wants Skeeter to be a part of close family, and she's very protective of her (when she kicks Jolene foot for making a backhanded comment about Skeeter's graduation news, and she encourages Skeeter for the job). This makes me realize that we shouldn't be blinded by personal relations when bad things is happening. So many people excuse bad acts done by their relatives/friends just because they're "decent people" but bullshit should always be called out, and Skeeter did just that.
LOVE the review section of this video, this is a thing that’s missing in 100% other reactions of this movie so it was really great to hear y’all talking about the problems with this movie :)
Nice to see a reaction to this great movie. Thanks for the upload. The cast here really stands out. Octavia Spencer was amazing, but also Jessica Chastain did a great job portraying the a bit - no offense - naive housewife with a huge heart and only the best intentions. The Chocolate Pie scene was fantastic...
I’m sure the daily and lifelong experiences of those oppressed were in reality even more harsh. The book and movie serve to shine a light on what has failed to be talked about, shared or understood.
This whole movie reminds me that forms of slavery still existed only 60 years ago, and as far as we’ve come were still not where we should be.
Slavery is still a major issue in Africa, the middle east and parts of Asia. Slavery is one of those things that will be around for as long as humans exist
@@sugarbomb1346 Yeah but we can curb slavery as much as possible. Better than just letting it fester.
It's still kinda a problem too in prisons. There's a reason there's a prison reform movement.
Woodrow Wilson was a great setback to the civil rights movement. Segregation knew no better friend.
Did you see The Help when it first came out? What's your take on its portrayal of History??
Hits right at home 👏
Look up medager everadrs
Historically these were just some of the happenings of the times. The poop in pie thing - I was told by an elder - was a well known payback "secret"....
My grandmother was a maid like this and was still taking care of kids when I was younger. (I’m an elder millennial) they wanted her to eat on the back porch and stuff like that. I read the book and saw the movie when it first came out. It was portrayed history but based on my family’s experiences The Help was tame and pretty soft in comparison 😅
I'm not a fan of the "white savior" trope, but I did really enjoy this movie because of the caliber of acting involved, and thought it was a good adaptation of the book.
Why is Hilly’s mom so much more accepting and loving than her daughter. I always wondered about that? How did that bad apple for so far from the tree?
The movie explained that Hilly’s father was a horrible influence. Sounds like he was insanely racist.
People who are treated dismissively learn to cut through bullcrap. They know most people are liars.
I saw this in theaters. I was with the best most reactive audience. When we got to the chocolate pie scene, we were screaming laughing! That was the most fun watching a movie in the theater I have ever had.
Even if you’re not showing, there’s still a fetus that comes out of your body at a misscariage.
Just an FYI: A mother wouldn't carry *[or miscarry]* a fetus until she is at least 10 weeks along.
Mothers who miscarry before that 10-week mark would pass an embryo inside of them, assuming that they even pass anything during their miscarriage, for there are people, myself included, who didn't bleed/pass anything during and/or even after the miscarriage and had to have a DNC to remove the embryo or fetus, depending on how far along the mother was at the time of the miscarriage.
I don't know if the movie clarifies how far along that particular character was when she had the miscarriage the film shows, seeing as I've never seen the movie outside of this condensed reaction, unfortunately.
However, if she were fairly early on in her pregnancy, I would imagine that it would be pretty challenging to not only discern an embryo *[especially]* from the rest of the tissue and such that discharges from the body during a miscarriage, especially considering how tiny embryos are up to a certain point in the pregnancy, but enough to place the embryo in a box to bury.
That is just assuming that she was pretty early on in her pregnancy, though.
Another really well made movie, based on actual historical events you should review is "Hidden Figures". Stars Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monea, Kevin Costner, Jim Parsons. Pay particular attention to the "bathroom" speech. Stellar cast and Oscar worthy performances.
Our suffering is commodified and made palatable by making movies about our suffering. White people feel better after crying along with a dramatic scene. FYI: The bathroom scene never happened. It was done for dramatic purposes. If you need to dramatise suffering to make people realise how bad it was and still is: You never really cared and this movie makes you feel good about that. Especially when you tell your white friends that they HAVE to see it. It will 'open their eyes'. Were they closed the whole time?!
The very first role I can remember Cicely Tyson in was the starring role in "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman". It was a tv movie based on the book by the same name. It recalls the life of a 110 year old woman who had been a slave and was immancipated. She also had a role in "Roots". That was back in the 1970s, but both of those would be worth you watching.
Minny’s character was inspired by Octavia Spencer. She also recorded the characters part in the audiobook.
Octavia so deserved the Oscar that she won for this. I feel Viola was duped though
AWWW LESLIE JORDAN RIP….HE IS SO FABULOUS!
I did the watchalong on Patreon for this. It was the first time watching The Help for me and I loved it! I had been putting off watching this movie for years, and JonRoxy was what finally convinced me to watch it.
There's barely any fiction here. These events - and much, much worse - actually happened time and time again in this country.
31:44 the reason Abilene speaks that way or says “is” instead of “are” is to display the lack of education she possibly received. she started as a maid at 14, so she basically gave up schooling for work.
Do some research on 'ebonics' and how servant and master had to address eachother. Same thing in the carribean. Nothing to do with poor education.
The pie scene will always be my favorite 😂
As many times as I've seen the Help, and seen other reactions to it, and also read the book I've never thought of it the way you both did. I really enjoyed your conversation and analysis at the end; definitely some great thought-provoking quetions! Excelent video!!
The cast of this film is INSANE, and I literally loved Emma performance, and yes she got nominated for an Oscar for this role, so it definitely put her on the map.
Emma Stone was not nominated for this. Viola Davis and Jessica Chastain were both nominated and Octavia Spencer won Best Supporting Actress.
Viola Davis regrets doing this movie.
I have this book as well as the movie and I gotta tell you they did an awesome job with this movie! The cast was so great!! Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer were AMAZING!! With that said I wouldn’t have been able to deal with a Hillie Holbrook and her bridge club. They all would have gotten a piece of my mind!
Both Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencers' profiles skyrocketed after this film.
She was also in “Easy A”, “House Bunny” and “Zombie Land”.
I had a miscarriage 10 days ago at 9 weeks. Celia put the baby in the box. Same as we did. Also planted flowers
Sending you so much love and healing ❤

OH MY GOD NELSON ELLIS (aka Lawfayette in True Blood) IS IN THIS MOVIE??!! How have I never noticed? He is so good :( so sad he is gone.
I'm a child of the 50's from Mississippi and you'd be amazed at the memories this movie brings back! It really rings close to home!
Another movie where Roxy barley reacts but just thinks of random stuff. While John over there is so emotional during the heavy parts.
Little tidbit in case you didn't know. Kathryn Stockett, the author of the book has a cameo. In the scene where Skeeter gets chewed out for not putting Hilly's initiative in the newsletter, you can see her to the right of Mary Beth, the woman in the blue dress, who talked about every raffle slot for baked goods being filled. She's wearing a purple dress.
I just know that Constantine's daughter probably spent the rest of her life blaming herself for her mother losing her job😢
Not trying to say the treatment was justified, but yeah, she is to blame. She really pushed the envelope as if she didn't realize what was going on. She allowed HER pride to affect her mother. Sad but true.
Nah. She's fine.
Oh, it breaks my heart that Nelsan Ellis (Henry, Waiter) isn’t with us anymore. I considered him a highly gifted actor. Met him once at a convention in Germany.
“Cause that’s what we’re here to do we’re the saviors” lol even when you want them to get it they don’t 😵💫😵💫
Emma Stone is so underrated.
It’s weird because I’m one hand yes cause no one really mentions her but no because she’s was in so many fucking movies and even this year was in one well known one that got good reviews
@@FarikoWishless yeah she's very popular during the 2010s but unexpectedly disappeared for a while. I hope she gets more roles from now on.

I remember watching this beautiful movie as a child and there were literally so many things that just shocked me . In my country, Morocco, I wouldn't say my community judged people based on their colour but they did judge people but it was never about color maybe class, family orientation, ideology, or maybe i was not aware of it because I've never heard of such a thing nor did I have to deal with it. It's really nice to watch movies From around the world to recognise how each society produces and handles its own flaws
We watched this movie in my high school government class, and everyone just lost it with laughter at the “Eat my shit” scene.

This truly was an amazing reaction. Thank you both. 👏🏽❤️
I read the book after watching and it's so so good. I love this movie and have a wood sign in my kitchen "You is kind. You is smart. You is important - Aibileen Clark"
I don't get why people confuse Bryce Dallas Howard and Jessica Chastain. They don't look that much alike.
They’re both redheads and people don’t look close enough…
What do you polish your silver with? Tears of my enemy! 😂😂
Viola Davis is absolutely phenomenal
The movie that catapulted Emma Stone was Easy A, The Help was one year after that!
Not superbad?
@@prathapkutty7407 her role in Superbad is pretty small and generic of other dude comedies of the 00s. 2008’s House Bunny was her first opportunity to really shine and make people fall in love with her style of acting and then Easy A was her step into stardom!
Octavia Spencer was in TobeyVerse , the first movie. She signed Tobey in at the wrestling match
“holy crap that is a captivating actress” THAT IS CICELY TYSON
The author wrote the book about her maid growing up in Jackson, MS. Constantine and Abileen's stories are her maids story. Abileen, the author and her caretaker at childhood and Constantine, the author and her caretaker as a teenager. The author knew something like this had never been done before and she wanted to give voice to these silent women. It's supposed to be a love story: the children and their caretakers.
This was such a great movie 😭❤️💕

the preacher is Daniel Oyewolo who starred in Selma, another good movie
Selma is definitely a must watch so is The Butler.
This is one of the best movies I have seen. The performance of all these powerhouse women is incredible.
Emma Stone was her own actress by this point this was one of her biggest movies but after easy a she had her own name
What name did she have before?
In my mind, Johnny and Celia go on to adopt lots of babies that They love with all of their hearts.
The part where skeeter and her staff were watching the tv was about Medgar Evers and his part in the civil rights movement
I was searching all over TH-cam if anyone would react to this movie and finally someone reacted love you guys❤❤
If i remember correctly, in the book it says that Minnie takes her children, leaves LeRoy and goes and lives with Celia and Johnny.

Great Reaction John and Roxy! This movie is so great and touching! 👍
Also, my favorite Beatles is George Harrison! (You asked us, a million years ago.) And the number one most downloaded Beatles song on Spotify is...... drumroll please, Ringo.....Here Comes the Sun, by George. 🙂😉☀️🌝🌞
Not as easy you put it. You leave out the complete bed rest after the first trimester and the fact that it's a high risk pregnancy with still a significant change of miscarriage. Sowing up just increases the chances to carry to term. But its still high risk and not always successful. Far from it. Lying in bed for months on end, knowing that even a sneeze can induce labour? Going on meds to surpress the braxton hicks going into full active labour? Oh yeah, it's SO easy. Just stich it up, indeed...i still miscarried!

Well, bed rest is pretty much de rigueur in these cases.
@@isoldejaneholland8370 still not easy and a weird application of the word 'rigeur' when issued mandatory bedrest for months. Wasn't easy at all. But apparently a walk in the park for you😄 what matters is that you have your healthy bundle of joy at the end. I was spazzing out the whole time! I wish I had your cavalier attitude about being stitched up to prevent your baby from falling out and dying.
