    I feel like the Mon Cal ships were best at space combat because the Mon Cals themselves were amazing at spaceflight. They evolved to think three dimensionally due to their underwater environment. Things that a Human shipbuilder or astrogator would never have thought of was just a matter of intuition to the Mon Cals.

      It has to be taken into account the fact that the Star Destroyers, as strange it may seem, had not been designed having space combat in mind. Like the Republic didn't have a real enemy, and so not even a real army, before the Clone War, the Empire was not expecting to have to fight pitched battles in space. How could it have been with all the major shipyards in Imperial hands? The Star Destroyers were terror weapons, designed to keep disgruntled systems under control. Huge ships with a menacing shape, a lot of turbolasers and a fighter complement able to intercept escaping ships and bomb the surface. Shields were secondary, since they are not impressive. When more was needed, the Empire could use sheer number.
      The Mon Calamari designed their cruisers knowing perfectly the Star Destroyers' weaknesses, especially to exploit them. So they designed smaller (less resources needed) tough ships, capable to resist the time needed for the fighter complement to do the job, or to escape if it could not be done. Firepower and "look" were secondary.

      @D00M3R_MAVS ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@neutronalchemist3241 They also left weaknesses in their designs that could have been bolstered, but the Empire favours cheaper production and then just throws loads of them at an Enemy. I think it was likely their biggest downfall. Design oversights that they likely knew about being exploited.
      I'm, not the biggest Star-Wars guy, but this is how I've came to understand the Empire. Incredibly cutthroat environment where each officer is trying to one up the next guy, and often this means cutting costs in development. I mean the whole thing really mirrors the Sith philosophy where in Order to become a reach the rank of Master you must actually kill your Teacher and replace them... totally messed up. I guess there is sense in it though as it's like Darwinism to an extent.

    I especially love that fact that they can also go deep underwater. This is very handy if you’re trying to hide from your enemies who don’t have the same aquatic capability. This served the Mon Calamari well when they were being blockaded by the Empire, with the Mon Calamari battleships being protected from the orbital bombardment by the deep water before blasting out of the ocean and escaped the blockade to join the growing Rebel Alliance.

    The Mon Cal cruisers complimented the Rebellion's heavy use of fighters perfectly. By having such heavy shields and armour, and having such a large amount of hangar space for fighters, the Rebels could gain fighter superiority and still have a ship to come back to after the battle.

      The Mon Calamari Shipyards provided the entire line of capital ships of the Rebellion, other than the commander in chief. No other planet contributed that much.
      You can also see how they break the "color code" of the rebellion. All the rebel equipment, from the starfighter to the helmets, is burned and battered, but the Calamari Cruisers are spotless.

      The emphasis on durability can be a disadvantage when an attack needs an upfront knockout blow by a capital ship. Durability doesn't mean much if you don't have the firepower to put an enemy down before they chew through your shields and hull. It just means that you are the last one to die. As the video documents that though, the Rebellion used them in ways that overcame this, hanging back out of effective firing range and delivering harassing fire while the smaller fighters and bombers took advantage of the ISDs lack of a point defense system.
      That said, the Rebels could have always made a couple with more emphasis on weapons and only use them when the extra firepower was required.

    I've always loved how much of the language of the Galactic civil war, and Star Wars in general, is kind of communicated through the differences between Mon Cal Cruisers and the Imperial Star Destroyers. Star Destroyers are cool, and awe inspiring and all...but when it comes right down to it upon close inspection, they're living embodiments of the Emperor's (and by extension, much of the Empire itself's) colossal ego. Most guns face forward, overwhelming firepower, proudly displayed bridge, needlessly huge, and defense seemingly treated like an afterthought. Everything about them is arrogant, made to win the fight before its even fought. They're ships that aren't expecting a fight on equal grounds.
    The Mon Cal Cruisers on the other hand don't immediately strike as awe inspiring a note, but they're sleek, the size they're meant to be, well rounded, very well defended and with an overall design philosophy that feels like it was designed with actual combat and tactics in mind. Meant to fill a role in a larger machine. Even the bridges are bright and functional, with no massive fall hazard like the Star Destroyer ones. lol
    Pissing off the Mon Calamari race was probably one of the most critical mistakes the Empire made.

    I wish these ships played a bigger role in the Disney/Lucasfilm movies. Originals and Prequels outgun the new movies in lightsaber duels, large scale space battles and land battles. I do not understand why after 4 films Disney/Lucasfilm keeps making average at best action scenes and very little Sith vs Jedi lore or duels. Just another reason I hate the new films. Jacen, Jaina, Jeged Fel, Ben Skywalker, Mara Jade, and Boba Fett were amazing in EU "legends" lore. These new films are boring.

    Couple of other things I think you forgot to mention, were their structural integrity was much higher than the equivalent ISD. If you set off a nuke in the hanger of an ISD, the ship was gone, if you did it to a mon cal it could survive the explosion and keep on fighting. They also had a much better fire control system, allowing them to land more turbolaser shots on to the enemy, than the comparitive ISD. That is what allowed it to dominate against an ISD, despite having fewer or smaller weapons, they were able to put those shots accurately where they wanted them.

    A fantastic arrangement! At the beginning of the video I had a thought that you had touched on in your final point (the ingenuity of the Mon Calamari people!), and am now extremely curious as to your thoughts:
    Do you believe that the Mon Calamari - as an aquatic race that developed on a world where six fields of movement is commonplace in contrast to your average terrestrial planet - has an inherent advantage in ship design when it comes to warfare in space? In my head this has always made sense, especially when considering the lack of exposed weakpoints and omni-directional weapons blisters. Either way, a truly unique design!

    Wait, you're saying that ISDs didn't have sealed compartments?
    What I feel the most in this video is as if both ships were created from different universes and work on different laws of physics. So much stuff about ISD energy trouble and then we just strap all the armor, shields and sensor on an improvised military vessel that Imperials can just give up. Creator pet syndrome?

    • @techmage89
      @techmage89 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think ISDs do have sealed compartments, but all their systems are centrally controlled, so a hit to the bridge can disable the whole ship, while Mon Cal cruisers have essentially several "backup" bridges that can still control parts of the ship on their own.
      Mon Cal cruisers don't have much firepower compared to ISDs, which is the ISDs advantage. In a straight fight, an ISD beats a Mon Cal cruiser hands down... the Mon Cal just doesn't have the firepower to penetrate the ISD's shields. That's why the rebels rely heavily on fighters and tricky tactics to exploit the ISD's weaknesses.

    I'm not going to say that MonCal cruisers are bad, because they're not. Honestly, I think my problem with them is that they're too good. Working off of a frame that's similar in size to an ISD, they somehow have massively better shielding, stronger hulls, superior armament, more fighter capacity, and a dozen other little things? All from something that was originally a civilian spaceliner? It just doesn't feel right, especially compared to a purpose-built warship. We're given a very clear view of the ISD's strengths, weaknesses, and overall uses. But then we're shown this and and told "Yeah it can do pretty much anything". Just doesn't feel right to me, but I'm sure someone will reply explaining how this all somehow makes sense.

    • @Legionzzzz1
      @Legionzzzz1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      They don't have superior armaments.
      MC80 Liberties the most common Mon Cal ship only has 48 heavy turbolasers and 20 ion cannons
      Vs
      Imperial Mk 2
      126+ heavy turbolasers, 20 heavy ion cannons and 8 octuple barbette turbolasers
      Or
      Imperial Mk1
      60 heavy turbolasers
      60 heavy ion cannons
      6 Dual heavy turbolaser turrets
      2 Dual heavy ion cannon turrets
      2 Quad heavy turbolasers
      3 Triple medium turbolasers
      2 Medium turbolasers
      Honestly the Vindicator heavy cruisers of the empire were more comparable in firepower to Mon Cal MCs who had about the same amount of turbolasers and ion cannons.
      Lol the majority of the time MCs were outgunned by imperial star destroyers who had double the firepower they did, the only reason they stand a chance of winning is the redundant overlapping shields.

    • @gold664
      @gold664 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      My apologies, I wasn't clear enough on what i meant when I referenced "superior armament." I wasn't referring to sheer mass of firepower or quantity of weapons, as the ISD's dominance in that area is unquestionable, but rather the advanced fire control systems that Eck mentions in the video. While not an extreme example, I find it another odd thing, that these cobbled-together warships have better aiming and fire control systems. My apologies for the confusion.

      ISD’s were cookie cutter and VERY expensive. When you have a very modular ship to start with and you put the best you can into a small number of ships you get a qualitative advantage. The Mon Cal did this. Most of the tech was available to the empire but would’ve been cost prohibitive ( in the insane quantity they built) or design in compatible. Personally i think the best imperial design was a modified victory. If they had also updated the venator class to a modern standard and then only deployed ISD mk 2’s or something equivalent as flag ships for fleets they would’ve been much more deadly as a force. The victory was much cheaper, more balanced firepower, and faster on some of the modified versions. And updated venator would’ve given them a great carrier that could take a punch.

      Real naval strategy is built strategy, you can't just refit your entire fleet, especially when is is needed on the battlefield, the same probably applies to Star Wars.
      A fleet is built with an overall strategy in mind, the empire probably expected to overhelm carriers with superior firepower and built their fleet with this strategy in mind. Changing naval strategy is very difficult, not just the ships have to change, the 'minds' of the navy too. Navies have always been very traditional institutions in world history, so I assume the Empire or any other superpower in Star Wars also had problems with adopting new strategies.

    Resurrected Starships pointed out in his video on MC80s that having an equal distribution of turbo laser and pdc across the entire ship meant that Home One class MC80s could perform barrel rolls broad sides, allowing turbolasers and shields to constantly refresh. This way an MC80 can create a virtually endless barrage of turbo laser fire while also distributing any incoming lasers to a greater portion of the ship's shields instead of one specific area.

    One thing that always struck me about the competing ship design philosophies of the Empire and Alliance was that the Empire was building the wrong ship for the wars it could be expected to fight.
    ISDs are designed for fighting peer or near-peer opponents. They are meant to slot into a tight formation where all ships can bring their entirely forward-focused firepower to bear at once while their flanks are protected by short-ranged TIEs. But the Empire _had_ no peers in the galaxy since the collapse of the CIS. For the small brushfire wars it could be expected to engage in, the imperial navy had exactly the wrong kind of primary combat unit. What it needed was smaller, more numerous and more versatile units. Cruisers, not battleships (yes, it's called a Star _Destroyer,_ but in practice it's a direct equivalent to the 20th-century dreadnought battleship).

    5:42 Where is this from?

    Mon Calamari Cruisers used some form of Fluid material to enhance Shield power and absorb slightly more energy than standard Deflector Shields. Add the redundant generators and the MC80 can easily take several ISD Volleys and dish out enough of it's own to destroy the ISD before it can take down the MC80s Shields. The Home One itself can easily take on 2 ISDs on it's own and can survive a brief skirmish with 4 ISDs before jumping into Hyperspace.
    Firepower/Shields:
    MC75: 4644/23220
    MC80 Home One: 16209/81045
    MC80 Wingless: 6078.375/30391.875
    MC80 Liberty: 8104.5/40522.5
    ISD-I: 12540/12540
    ISD-II: 16720/16720

    Mon cala has been one of my most loved things about star wars.. Their distinct design are just magnificent.. And thinking that this would be as a template for our future so called "spacecraft" soon.. either way its been my fav since the first time I watched the original trilogy back when I was still a younglings
