    Today, we look at why the Empire didn't destroy the Mon Calamari shipyards during the Galactic Civil War. Mon Cal cruisers represented the bulk of the Rebel Fleet, and were incredibly deadly. With a fleet of Star Destroyers and maybe a Super Star Destroyer - the Empire could have easily wiped the shipyard of the face of the Galaxy. We cover this and more on today's Star Wars Lore video!

      @@randomstormtrooper3345 In the DU the Rebels were a much larger force for some unexplained reason. In the EU, before Yavin, the Rebel Alliance were just a handful of dissidents and fighter pilots. Several planets rebelled, but were not formerly part of the Rebel Alliance (i.e. Naboo, Kashyyyk, New Plympto, etc.), they only rebelled to rid their respective planets of Imperial oppression (and failed to do so), not rid the entire galaxy of the Empire and restore the Republic. After Yavin, many planets (including Mon Calamari) pledged to support the Alliance because it had become an actual threat to the Empire. A war against the Empire became winnable at that point.

      @@-CrimsoN- the TV show rebels really helps with that point. Although the did have mon calamari ships they were not a common sight most were second hand or stolen ships.
      Alderan also had been able to sneak a lot of supplies and even ships to the rebel aliance through creative means. It was done in a way that the empire couldn't prove it. Which made it an even bigger liability.

The entirety of Scourge Squadron(24 Imperial Star Destroyers) and the Executor Class Super Star Destroyer Reaper were slotted to blockade the sector along with large amounts of support ships just prior to Endor. The idea was to bottle up the Mon Cal until the Second Death Star was finished and could deal with Mon Calamari.

Keep them pinned down you know of the Endor plans, and even if they don't fall for the trap, just finish the DS2 go to Dac and blast it in one hit risking minimal casualties. 2 was the smarter choice until everything went wrong.

      @michaelramon2411 5 ปีที่แล้ว +95

      Empire is built on the threat of omnipresent overwhelming force - the ability to attack and win against anyone, anywhere. This threat is a lie - no civilization, not even the Empire, has the resources and technology to pull that off. The galaxy is just too big. (Maybe Celestials or the like, but no modern civilization.) Before Yavin, the Empire was planning to use the Death Star for that. After Yavin, they had a thousand little revolts to stamp out and ten thousand little revolts to keep from happening with garrison fleets. Sending a huge number of ships into a hard-to-reach part of the Outer Rim whose hyperlanes are covered in mines risks disaster, especially as the Alliance is likely to strike elsewhere in the meantime.
      Put another way, there's a reason why the Romans only conquered the lower half of Britain.

    • @lordfrostwind3151
      @lordfrostwind3151 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I get it, but a system in open revolt allowed to continue represents a pretty staggering blow to your perception of strength as well. I think the best answer would be performing constant small attrition attacks and raids. Use battlegroups of various sizes and composition to launch attacks on areas scouted out by probe droids to whittle down the Mon Cala defenses. The key is the Empire can replace losses in such skirmishes much faster than the rebels and Mon Cala will be able to.

      @@casbot71 gotta remember that hes still extremely powerful in the force so we cant just have a regular death for him. Being thrown into the Death Star II reactor was pretty fitting. And dying in the crash landing seems too pitiful of a death for Palpatine. Maybe have Dooku call him out just before hes executed by Anakin and then Anakin and Obi-Wan duel and defeat Palpatine. With Dooku handless and in Prison and Palpatine dead, the Confederacy would have virtually no military leadership outside of Grievous. On the flip side, Palpatine being dead would mean he couldnt give out Grievous location to the Jedi and thus result in a long and brutal campaign to find and end Grievous. Peace would likely be found but Grievous would likely lead that timelines version of the Separatist Holdouts that the Empire fought.

    I always wondered myself why the Empire allowed Mon Calamari to continue in open revolt, and I think Eck hits on the three basic reasons here. 1: Imperial navy doctrine kept their fleet spread too thin across the galaxy to afford a real siege against an entrenched and well-armed planet. 2: The destruction of the DS1 fanned the flames of rebellion on virtually every world that received word of the Empire’s vulnerability. 3: The Emperor used Force visions to guide the Empire and it’s navy, and per RotJ, we know that these visions do not turn out exactly how he expects. If he had relied on competent advisors, he could have crushed the Rebellion long before Endor.

The Empire could use this and simply stir up the Quarren into an open civil war against the Mon Calamari, just like the Separatists did during the Clone Wars, or at least to sabotage ship building in order to destabilize Mon Cala. There were many Quarren agents, motivated by their hatred and long-standing prejudice towards the Mon Calamari, who sabotaged the planetary shields shortly before the Imperial invasion of Mon Cala, facilitating a swift Imperial victory. Actually, there are some claims that Mon Calamari was a priority target for the First Death Star once station will be deemed fully operational, however Tarkin more or less blew it entire plan by first idiotically ordered to destroy Alderaan (decision which of course become a PR nightmare for the Empire to deal) and later put the completely UNDEFENDED by Imperial fleet station in to chase after Millenium Falcon which as we known ended for him in spectacular explosion above Yavin IV...
    That's why, having to deal with two PR disasters Empire could not afford another one by openly attacking Mon Calamari and in fact risk galaxy wide and possibly uncontainable rebelion which could put at end Empire's existence long before Endor.

    • @goldenking2046

      That makes sense, because attacking Mon Cal(heavily armed and fortified force concentrated around a single planet) is just about the ONLY scenario where a superweapon like the death star is more efficient than putting the same resources into smaller ships. You could throw thousands of star destroyers at Mon Cal but still sustain heavy losses before you won through numbers. On the other hand the death star can hyperspace in, fire on the planet and gtfo probably only suffering minimal damage.

    I thought I remember reading somewhere that the Mon Cal actually just suddenly launched their previously unknown massive fleet all at once (more or less). The fleet having been previously disguised as buildings in their underwater cities. So while there was possible retribution but no real strategic targets on Mon Cal. Anyone else remember reading something like this? Did I make it up, did it get retconed?

    Well actually was an ocasion where the empire attack a MC shipyard and succesfully destroy it, but it seems that was a empty victory, because didn't affect in nothing to the Mon Calamari in general, and as you say Eck, attack a shipyard is not just very costly, but also very dangerous, not only because of the defending fleet and their reiforcements, but also because of the armament of the shipyard itself, I mean by that time it wouldn't be nothing like the defenses of Kuat, but it would be enough to take down at least 2 of 3 ISD by its own, considering that it have multiple turbolaser batteries and also point-defense systems to kill the very vulnerable TIE bombers

    statecraft 101: having a major planet in open revolt and completely disregarding imperial authority would be far, far worse then the negative effects of some minor defeats elsewhere had they needed to divert resources. Dac would have been a symbol of the struggle, and proof that it was possible to defeat the empire and drive them out. Revolts and rebellions tend to spread, and if Dac was not retaken quickly, then other planets would try the same thing.
    Also, it undermines the empire as a threat because they apparently do not have the resources to retake one single planet, however well defended that planet might be. the Whole deal with the empire is that they are built for conventional warfare and will use any means necessary to win, and yet when given this perfect opportunity to show their power and to use their military to its fullest potential they don't.

    • @rafaelodo5193
      @rafaelodo5193 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really what you said. For all the talk about how the Empire at it's peak with all those 25000 star destroyers is too OP to face directly, forcing the small rag tag alliance to only fight guerrila hit and run tactics, choosing only to fight at the weak spots and improperly defended systems. Then, for once the Empire is given the opportunity to actually bring the fight to the alliance, and doesn't "because a direct approuch would be too consuming".
      Oh hell no, I'm not buying that. Excuse you, every single moff had more than enough ISDs parked on his space garage than required to take out Mon Cala as a whole. Some Imperial warlords even managing to somehow stash away whole dreadnaughts and keep them hidden in Legends (like the ones Gilad Pellaeon simply stumbles upon, the Megador and the Dominion). The idea that the Empire would be "stretched too thin" to mount a fleet to destroy a single rebel planet is ludicrous, even if that planet was as well defended as Mon Cala. They had literal dozens of thousands of battle ready assets lying around doing absolutely nothing while the rebels routinely bypassed them and got away with it. Instead, they could have easily destroyed basically the only key component in supplying rebel fleets with their only alternative to ISDs. Actually watching the excuses in the video made me just the more sure striking Mon Cala was the right move.

    The Empire has the same hyperspace mobility as the Alliance, though, and galaxy-wide real time communication. A strike force could be assembled from their duty stations and travel to Mon Cala, wreck the shipyards in a day, and go right back to whence they came. For the Alliance to take advantage of that, they'd have to learn of the withdrawal and precise timetable in advance, in which case the whole operation is busted anyway, or learn that certain ships are attacking Mon Cala, and thus not where they would normally be, after the attack is underway, and then they have to assemble and prepare a strike and then travel to the normal garrison station themselves, risking the Imperial warships' return.

    Mon cal was a space fortress with the ship yard having tons of defensive structures and probably a planetary defense shield with a fleet of ships in space and some other fleets in near by systems that the imperials don’t know about, which in turn could jump into a strategic position and then the fact that some of the ships were on the planet it self and the fact that the Mon Cals and quarens were aquatic creature with most of the planet covered in water would deem the invasion of the planet near impossible. And then with the help of the rebellion, who could respond to the empires attack making the imperials surrounded from multiple angles and there for will have to retreat (Which is embarrassing) or the’ll be destroyed by the amassed armada.That I understood but I didn’t know all about what was going on in the imperial government at the time, Thanks Eck for help clarifying this for me your amazing man.

    - The rebel alliance was all about hit and run skirmishes, because they lacked the resources and/or firepower for a large set-piece battle. An assault on Mon Cal would have been a smart move by the Empire. It would force the rebels into doing exactly what they were trying to avoid.
    PS - I'd conduct what appeared to be a SMALL scale assault on Mon-Cal to lure the rebels in, and have a large-scale force hiding in reserve, and ready to jump in from hyperspace when the rebels arrived.

    I never considered the Empire to be smart enough to think things through.
    If you want to instill fear across the galaxy, Alderaan is the better target. It is an ancient world within the Core Worlds that is revered by other worlds and has no military. Mon Cala is in the Outer Rim Territories and it is armed to the teeth.
    You destroy Alderaan and people fear the Empire's ruthlessness.
    You destroy Mon Cala, first it is far from the Core and well armed. There is no way that the Empire can do the job without a hell of a battle. After is over, the Empire will have to lick its wounds and the people of Mon Cala would be considered martyrs to the rebel cause. The rebellion will be hurt, but galvanized to fight harder and avenge their allies.

    • @lenkagamine4145
      @lenkagamine4145 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not inclined to agree. The death star could attack mon calamari and come away with no damage whatsoever. And, since alderaan was a nominally peaceful planet and Mon Cala was in open rebellion and producing ships for the rebel alliance, destroying mon cala would not trigger nearly as much support for the rebellion as destroying alderaan- its basically a legitimate target.
      Even if they didnt use the death star, the empire could lose a hundred star destroyers and it wouldnt be significant to its total military power. Theres no way mon cala could do enough damage to actually negatively impact the empire.

  • @QixTheDS

    Given that Mon Cala was so fortified, why didn’t they use it as a HQ for the Alliance and only utilize smaller outposts. This instead of trying to consolidate on secret bases that concentrated too many assets, personnel or otherwise, without heavy defenses that would potentially result in the deaths of alliance heads or important equipment. Basing on Mon Cala has the advantage of a solid rendezvous point for personnel but without compromising security. I know he said the Imps had the place bottlenecked, as well as the Mon Cala having it mined, but he also said they scouted out secret hyper lanes.
