Todd Uses New Words To Say He Doesn't Want Paulie to Play

  • Todd received four new words Butterfly (toy), Peacock Feather (Toy), Glamour (cat), and Paulie (cat). It only took about 9 minutes until he started using the new buttons to ask for the Peacock feather several times. I don't know why but Todd does not always let Paiue play with him. After threatening to chase Paulie a couple of times (see note below) Todd said "No" "Paulie" Which I took to mean he doesn't want Paulie to play when he is playing.
Note: Todd will, at times chase Paulie downstairs when he tries to join in the playing. I do give Paulie private play time so he is not left out.
Todd is a 6-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. We aim to let Todd express himself and tell me his wants and needs. Currently, Todd has 36 words on his soundboard. This channel is dedicated to Todd learning to “talk”. The way Todd looked between the Glamour and Paulie buttons. First, shows he knew which 2 buttons were the new ones. Second, that he knew they were the other cats. Third, that he was remembering which button was which. Fourth, he remembered and pushed the right button. That was amazing.

The attention shown by this cat while you show them things is amazing. I don't think you even really need to move Todd around to pay attention. One thing I've learned from cats is that they don't 'fixate' on things in the same way humans do. They may pay attention to something, but often don't look directly at what they are focused on as a way to appear non-threatening. You can tell what they focus on from their ear direction and tail pointing.

Reminds me of the toddler/preschooler's possessiveness over "My" toy; that's Mine; Hey, You can't.." & the older sibling- "That's not fair" card- "How come I have to work/ask for it & he doesn't have to do anything/push buttons & he gets whatever he wants".. But that may be intellectually humanizing a rationalization about behavior & personifying jealousy? to cat behavior when it may actually be that Todd may perceive the activity as "His" activity as a part of "His" buttons & "His" territory. Do they eat from the same or separate dishes ? Do they play with the same toys apart from button usage ? I had a male cat before my female was introduced to him- (lost him 2yrs ago due to unresolved bladder issues after veterinary unblocking him, veterinary manual expression, him "going" on his own & more blockage while under veterinary care..). My girl kitty has alway eaten more & I had to feed them separately. She has always played more & differently than he. (He was a blue russian & she is a grey tiger dsh.) They played with certain toys together, napped together but she always seemed to crave more 1 on 1 interaction & he didn't seem to mind. He loved the lint roller ! Across his back.😂 If he heard me using it on my clothes, he would come running. She drew back away from it back then but is ok with it now but He Loved it ! All started because of cat curiosity.. Still haven't watched all your vids & no fb so looking for insight- What are the "family dynamics " ? Who came first ? Then who & when ? Anything affect personality or security like stressful or life impacting changes ? (Moving, relationship, loss, sickness..) I sound like a therapist ! Smh. 🤣 Lol.

Todd seemed genuinely engaged, he stretched out next to the button array as his human added new buttons and waited expectantly. It is interesting that often even in multi-animal households it is only one cat/dog who uses the buttons and even as Todd seems to act as the spokesman for the others. Todd might want to me the female cat Billi who is quite sophisticated in her button use. Bunny the dog lives with a younger dog named Otter and the younger dogs seems to use buttons somewhat; Bunny is incredible, discussing her dreams and even making a philosophical comment far beyond what a human of the same age would observe: She said basically (upon waking from a daytime dream) Even if you dream in the daytime, it is still a dream -- I am not even sure she could have really meant such an insightful thing but if so, either she is the most intelligent dog in history (not impossible that learning word buttons especially at a young age vastly increasing the cognitive abilities of a dog or cat) or we have vastly underestimated dog and probably cat intelligence for Billi the cat once said "Billi pets mom" and then she very clearly pet her human!

I have always given him his buttons in sets of three and the only button I have ever removed was catnip, because he doesn't care for it. This time was a little different, he received the two new toys so he needed to be able to ask for them and I wanted to give him the other two cats. I know he already knows their names as most of the time I address my cats by name when speaking to them so I didn't think that would be an issue. I will go back to his standard 3 at a time in the future. As for three at a time, I feel he is smart enough for it and it gives a variety. If we are working on a new concept and he appears to be getting frustrated, he likes and wants to know what the new word means, we can take a break from that word and move on to one of the other words. It truly amazes me how much he seems to love his buttons and learning new words. He is always so excited when he sees it's time for me to add new words to his board and want training all the time to learn them.

If the other cats aren’t included in learning & using the buttons, the cat that is will become possessive of them, especially if the human tells the other cats ‘no’ when they want to learn & use buttons. I’ve seen this being done on EVERY cat button channel, it’s counterproductive & causes unnecessary stress. They will all learn faster if they’re all included. As far as sharing, did you not hear me ask Paulie to come back and he can play too?
