tbf even if they know the dragonborn is a thing, they don't know YOU are the dragonborn, who is also the arch-mage, who is also the hero that beat the stormcloaks for the imperials, who is also the Thane of most of Skyrims regions.

You walk in jorrvaskr in a full set of dragon bone armor and full dragon bone weapons and entire deadric artifacts in skyrim with you. You have a vampire lord follower and conjure dremora lords like a puppy, and they call you welp. Wtf??
The next elder scrolls needs to interact better with the players actions and have more depth and impact of choices. Honestly they need to mix in some more fallout elements like factions playing a deciding role in the main story and always having multiple role play/player build oriented methods of completing quests, this was done to perfection in new vegas.
It's not easy to create an open world and then predict every choice the player makes when creating a dialogue for an NPC. Normally the game leads you to Whiterun early on and invites you to join the companions as the first guild before you make it through the gates. They didn't take into account that people would kinda play "backwards" and choose to join the companions as a famous persona OR that they would create alternative start mod that allows them to start wherever as whoever. It'b be nice if the game was tracking the player's reputation and had different dialogue options for different accomplishments of the dragonborn but I imagine it would be very difficult. For the sake of immersion I just like to imagine that commoners simply don;t know what the dragonborn looks like or even what's his or her name and therefore treat you like a stranger because they just don't know you're the famous dragonborn/ archmage or whoever you choose to be

The companions not being sure who this living apocalypse that walked into their HQ is, so testing you in combat, and the guy who does so lighting on fire, exploding, and dying before he can finish his sentence as combat starts before you lift your arms, requiring you to turn a bunch of things off. Or some rando hearing of your exploits as the Dragonborn, whoever that is, what's a Helgen?

Yeah, its a little annoying that they don't know you, especially if you've done everything in the game already, but I keep thinking back to when the black plague was going on and every second dude was named John and there wasn't a prompt and available news system. If you're not going around and putting your ear to the ground, would you really know the dragonborn on sight? You might have just heard in passing that some dude or dudette just slayed Alduin the World Eater and what they looked like didn't come up in those few words at all. And I got the feeling most of the people in Skyrim weren't even *aware* that Alduin was a thing. And the College of Winterhold? Most look at the place in suspicion and the place didn't have much contact with the outside world. Heck, after Alduin attacks the fort at the very beginning, its never mentioned by any common person *ever*. Though, I am only on my first playthrough. I may be wrong :P
Guards will comment on your archievments with some quests or guilds. But it makes 0 sense that the companions don't know you if you're past the first few hours of the main quest. You battle a dragon outside of Whiterun and is named Thane of Whiterun, a title that would gather you a lot of renown at least in whiterun, you know, where the Companions are. If you're far enough in the main quest then you've trapped a Dragon in the keep. Besides, most of Whiterun would know you persobally since you can complete quests for half the citizens. In the end it boils down to lazy design, they could have simply added a dialog line triggered if you completed enough quests in Whiterun or became Thane of Whiterun or another hold.
Meanwhile the guards all know your entire life story if youve done the Thieves Guild or DB questline. Morrowind was actually way better to the extent that they actually had an internal "Reputation" counter that would influence the game. It would be smart to introduce that to Skyrim somehow.
You sometimes need a strong headcanon for these scenes😅 - they don't know how i look like - just because i did epic things before i dont get special treatment from them and have to work myself up as ever other welp😅
Nothing more irritating for me in open world games is the failure of the world to respond to what you do. FNV for me is still the best and how you could hear on the radio your achievements or events. Cyberpunk also failed miserably at this too, get max street cred and rogue still doesn’t know you when you meet her

I'd excuse not knowing who you are after most questlines, but you literally rode a dragon into Sovngarde and took off right next door from where they live and it was a big deal for all of Whiterun to witness, and they just have no clue who you are? This is why I never liked the Companions questline.
