    This reminds me of a discussion on the nature of the hangman social/word game under jan Misali's video about it.
    Basically what we realized is that hangman is a pen and paper RPG where the role of the executioner is to understand what the group would have problems coming up with, but also very satisfying to finally have it click. Like a good GM, the executioner is best when they serve the group, since if the GM cheats, lies, or is downright sadistic, the group will turn against them.
    This is making me realize that that's all games, and Pathologic is one of those with a specific in-group that is just on the edge of being unfairly sadistic, but in a way that is very satisfying. I never thought about the game Dev parasocial dance like this. Thank you for this essay.

    Such a great perspective on video games, and particularly hard games and the idea the developers are challenging you personally to best them through the obstacles they throw at you. I've never really thought about games in regards to who made them, but it's a wonderful insight to have. I don't know if I'll ever play pathologic, I've seen Mandalore cover them as well and it doesn't strike my fancy too much, but I have respect for the game after seeing your perspective on it.

    I played a bit of Pathologic (first 2 days of the Bachelor lol) and didn't continue it cause it is NOT the game to play in 2020 for me. Watched a bunch of videos on it though and I have immense respect for the game, its developers and what they accomplished with it. I'm so glad this is the angle you took with this video cause I think the most interesting/important thing about Pathologic is the fact that it was made in the first place (if that makes sense)

    • @pimscrypt
      @pimscrypt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    That was my experience with the game, too. I used a guide to find who to talk to for the quests for each day and do them before the game notified me. And to pick and choose the ones that would give me rewards. Didn't read the details, just the starting points and rewards. Even so, I had to use tons of tricks to get by. Jumping in and out of buildings to force the world to reset and remove the rats and muggers chasing me, save-scumming, using elevation differences to stymie attackers, wading through the swamp to escape the bridges in the plague-ridden districts (I didn't realize you could do that until my Haruspex playthrough), buying a ton of food on Day 1 and selling it off on Day 2 for a ton of money and re-buying it on Day 3 plus even more since prices had dropped.

    There was this one time midgame when I got infected and decided to do things Pathologic Classic style and just bear with the infection keeping it on the low, only to realize a day later that I am short on everything because no matter how much extra running around for the resources I do, the plague still takes way too much health out of me, and I just can't afford to sleep to heal that much / get enough medicine to sustain infection and hp at an appropriate level. And I knew all of that because, for a whole day, I tried my bestest to do all those things and I was still dying. The decision to lose all of that day's progress and just admit that I can't change a single thing in my play to make it ok except for 'go all the way back and not start the day infected in the first place' is probably the hardest decision I had to make in a videogame ever.

    • @pimscrypt
      @pimscrypt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for sharing that story! It truly hits like a ton of bricks when you have to redo sections of the game because you made a bad call, or because something happened that you didn't forsee. I thank the developers for at least having the mercy to not have the infection carrry over to all your previous saves.

    I always like to see people reflecting like this on the screamy rage "reviews" of several years ago. I didn't make videos like those, but I enjoyed them and felt defensive when I met people who found them uncomfortable. Certainly it's still fun to complain! But, well.
    The way the player and the player character are uncomfortably separate in Pathologic is so much fun! Dankovsky can become aware of it, I wasn't aware it's such a thing for Clara all along.

    • @pimscrypt
      @pimscrypt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Complaining can be fun, I agree. I don't think that ever went away. I think the big issue, that a lot of people grew out of, was the anger and the yelling. It was mostly just "look at how much this thing SUCKS" - and after having heard that a hundred thousand times it's not criticism anymore. It's just noise.
      I really like that too! How Dankovsky's quest log changes his primary goal of trying to cure death to simply say that everything was meaningless. What makes it even more great is that you can talk to Clara about it, after one of the final reveals, and she just says "yeah I knew".

    I really liked how you used Pathologic to describe games as your friendly rivals, and thought it was funny when you said that Pathologic allows you to crawl to the finish line. I've never played Pathologic, but it sounds like the player has a particularly unique relationship with the developers. In other ways, so much of video games are the developers antagonizing you, and it's strange that this is the fun. It sounds like Pathologic definitely takes that to a whole different level!

    I liked this video a lot. It's one of my favorites of yours. It's interesting. Your experience with these games reminds me of my own experience with COVID. At first, it was like the first game. Very hard to beat, but manageable. I could find ways to "trick" myself into being okay. But like the Second game. The latter half of Covid was really rough for me. I felt similar in the way that I was not beating Covid, It was beating me, and that I just had to keep crawling to the finish line without the finish line being in sight. I have felt in real life how you felt in the game when coming to find the shop. When life gives me a break from the nightmare that is our assistance under this plague. Those moments of relief. For me, such a moment was when the Election was called for Joe Biden. I remember crying in my car while driving home at 3am. Listening to his speech about a hopeful future. A light of hope after so long in darkness. I have stumbled since that speech, and all has not become perfect, but still, my world is brighter than it was before it. Because in a way Life is a Game, and If the Developer is God, then I know one Prayer that They will Always Answer:" Humble Me Oh God. "

    I'm a strong believer that ALL video games should have difficulty sliders, or even better a custom difficulty option, if a dev wants to make a challenging gaming experience, thats great, but not everyone if as capable as each other, and an easy mode on a challenging game for some, will be just as hard as standard for most players
    On the flip side, and of personal interest to me, is with a difficulty slider you can up the challenge, you can take a game that you love and fully understand and give it the tools to continue competing against you at your (new) level, games become significantly more replayale with a simple difficulty slider, more so with a custom difficulty option

    This video was great. And I looked at the reviews you put up and most of them did describe the difficulty as enhancing the "theme of the story". Yeah they didn't get the meta purpose of the difficulty which you talked about but I think their criticism is still valid not everyone can pour over a games themes the way you have here and themes don't make a game fun(Heck to them the themes made the game anti-fun). Similar to this I honest to goodness love the Call of Duty Black ops 3 campaign it has layers and themes I love to dig into like I do pathologic but the characters are flat and it's hard to engage with the story on a surface level but it's still my favorite.

    So when you started your story about finding the store that takes money I thought it was going where my version of it went; which was to say murdering a soldier for his rations in cold blood and that SOUNDS really bad but what makes it worse is that I tried to do that again a day later because I was in dire straights only for that second soldier to not have any rations. I killed 2 men for food who were just doing their jobs and the difference in how much easier it was to pull the trigger the second time was unsettlingly great. Nothing makes you feel like/understand the act of being a monster quite like Pathologic.

      It does get a bit cold in the apartment at times though, so the warm clothes didn't hurt!

    This essay sucks. This game is a simulator and story-game, not a constant dark souls boss. The warehouse ambush during the Haruspex route was probably the shittest example you could've given.

    It's hilarious that young people perceive their peers as so fragile that discussing anything related to a pandemic is mentally crippling. Every video starts with something like "Most people wouldn't want to talk about a fictional pandemic right now because supposed pandemic has been so rough" (that the biggest problem during it has been a pandemic of obesity due to people sitting all day while stuffing their faces with sugary processed food.) "You are so stunning and brave for living thru that! I'm even more stunning and brave than most tho, so I will be talking about it. I understand if you are too emotionally fragile and mentally weak to watch tho."
