How to Bleed Motorcycle Brakes: Yamaha FZ6

  • In this video I will show you the procedure for bleeding non-ABS motorcycle brakes. This 2007 Yamaha FZ6 takes DOT 4 brake fluid but always consult with your service manual or reservoir cap for fluid details. This process crosses over to nearly all non-ABS motorcycle brakes and the principle method applies to cars as well. Never use old brake fluid that was opened months ago because even if it was stored with the cap on it can absorb water from the air and lower the boiling point making it unsafe to use.
    Tools you'll need:
    8mm wrench
    small length of 3/16" inner diameter hose (clear hose preferred)
    New brake fluid
    Container to catch old fluid

    I recently bought a FZ-6 2004, and have been enjoying these videos very much. I have now changed the break fluid on my bike following your video and it was a breeze. I had a second pair of hands which made the whole "pump-release" process easier, and that person could also monitor the reservoir level as we went along. Took 10 mins to do both front calipers this way

    I like using clear tube because you can see instantly when the clear fluid comes and the bubbles stop.

    Did I understand correctly that on the fz6 (I have the same hoses as you), the right caliper is first pumped, and then the left one?

    I think you should use a transaprent hose next time - it is easier to see, if there are air bubbles coming out of the system.

    on the 2004 is there a caliper swap that will work ? like a 4 piston r6 or sumthn ?

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      People have swapped to the R6 brakes but it requires changing the front suspension as well. Looks like a big job but lots of good upgrades along the way.

    Great video! Just wondering approximately how much brake fluid you needed for the job? would one 500ml container cut it or should i buy 2?

    • @Calvinm

      Two would certainly be good. But you might get away with one.

    Any difference bleeding the fz6 ABS version

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, to fully bleed the abs system you need to trigger the abs valves. I’m not familiar with the process but I think it is available in the service manual. Best of luck!

  • @bobbystriglio

    Is it ok to bleed the brakes with the reservoir cap off?

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You certainly can, you just run the risk of shaking the reservoir and spilling brake fluid on the bike.

    Any different for abs brakes?

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the bleed procedure would be a bit different if you wanted to bleed every portion of the abs system. Not sure what the procedure is for an abs version FZ6

    I performed this last night on my FZ6 and by brakes weren't too spongy before. Now they're worse. Any extra tips or tricks? Also replaced the front tire on the wheel and reinstalled it this morning and the wheel doesn't spin freely anymore. The calipers go on to the rotors and forks smoothly. Its puzzling me

    • @NapTooR
      @NapTooR ปีที่แล้ว

      did you sorted it out?

    • @Reddude104
      @Reddude104 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NapTooR I mounted the wheel in the opposite direction, I flipped the wheel over and it turns smoothly now. I clamped the brake lever down for an evening and its been much better ever since.
