I had to get a valve cover gasket and I have clutch springs on the way but everything else on it is just about mint. The biggest thing in looking for a cheap bike or cheap car is patience, you've got to wait for a good enough deal to come along. That's at least out here in the country, where most bikes are really just toys and aren't driven/taken out of the garage unless the weather's nice.

If you live in California taking a motorcycle safety course is a very good way to get a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license.
Next, I urge you to look for a bike with antilock brakes. Antilock brakes cut your death risk about in half provided you are already riding safe and sober.
I have a big tall Kawasaki Concours (not a starter bike) that can skid and flip if the rear wheel is locked up as in an emergency stop. The bike loves to float along at 85 to 95 mph. But what if the truck a 1/2 mile ahead loses a ladder? Roads can have bad stuff on them and ABS brakes are to help you survive the likely trouble you may see.
Used motorcycles, as well as a bike given to you by a friend usually need to replace the battery. A tired battery stresses the charging system and causes light bulbs to burn out due to high voltage developed at high rpms. It is less hassle to replace the battery on your terms at home. Use the owners manual, get the needed tools, and compare the replacement battery at the parts house side by side with the old battery.

Listen to Papa Yam. I made the fatal mistake 16 years ago with my first bike. I bought a "cheap" Yamaha R6 that was 4 hours away. I got it home and realized the forks were slightly bent, there was frame damage hiding under the fairings, and there was no electricals running to the turn signals. Spend a little more money on something that's solid and might not be as sexy as that cool beater race bike...

Either you will learn you don't want to ride or learn what you don't like or learn what you thought you like but don't enjoy.
Either way you will be selling it either the get a nicer bike or to get out of riding. Will get you money out

Valves done around 54k, so not needed for another 14k miles. Never raced, never touched a track. NO major damage, minor scuffs. New oil and brake fluid. Possibly selling because I inherited a motorcycle.

2 years ago I bought a Kawasaki ZR-7 as my first bike for 1700€ (2000$), 57000 km/35000 mi, two dents in the tank, no rust. She’s an absolute beauty, a bit slow but the sound of the air cooled 4 cylinder engine is just jaw dropping. The only expenses I had were maintenance costs. The only thing I had to repair was the fuel pipe for 70€/80$. So I wouldn’t say that ALL bikes for 2500$ or less are garbage.

Something to keep in mind for the Texas guys too. In Texas you no longer pay taxes based on what you paid for the motorcycle. Instead you pay taxes based on the value of the motorcycle. So if you got a great deal on a newer more expensive bike be prepared to pay a bit more in taxes.

Just want to say this, if you're looking for something cheap, easy to work on, some assembly required at purchase (easy assembly items) and one that can be easily registered and insured for on road use check out the hawk 250 EFI on amazon. For $2000 your getting a brand new bike that is fuel injected and can be registered and insured in i believe 48 or 49 states. Now it's only a 250cc (it's a 230cc actual) so like 17.4 hp but it's a great machine to learn on. Its slow, geared for off road with on road capabilities and gives you a start into the sport. It's a cheap bike that is actually reliable... i own one and it's what got me into motorcycles. There are some videos out on them including on Bikes and Beards. Also the motor is a Honda clone and is practically bullet proof...

I wonder how many riders in the US get put off biking as they buy something with 100hp as first bike. In France I started on 125s and now a restricted A2 Ducati, even with those i had a learning curve so the US approach seems a bit reliant on self restraint which none of us have 😎

Can't say I agree with that too much. I feel like either someone's a rider at heart or they're not. Obviously starting on a liter bike isn't a smart move, but 100hp isn't really too bad. My first bike has 98 I believe and I had no issues hoping on getting going. I hit top speed my second day of riding. But I've realized speed isn't everything. I have more fun taking turns than going all out on the highway. If someone can't control 100hp, then maybe they should take more time on something smaller to learn the fundamentals, ir maybe they're just too reckless, but overall I believe 100hp is perfectly acceptable on a first bike.

An HVAC tech sold my in laws the Shadow 750 that I have now. His wife was tired of looking at it taking up space in the garage so it was sold for $200. The last thing that needed replaced was the fuel petcock (an $80 part). Know what I did? Blew the petcock out with air, and it's been running great ever since 🤣.
I believe it needs a chain, since I need to adjust it again (or I didn't get the cross bolt tight). It's been laid over once, so the tank, shock and shifter are mangled but since I'm a noob that's fine 🤣.

I've owned 3 bikes and the encounters have ranged from needs a quick tune to deadly, first bike I got was a cg125 as I recall it was owned by a barber who used it to run to work in london and was about to take his test so he could ride the 600 he had waiting...he failed that test and was basically screwed for 2 weeks...don't be like this. He told me it had an idling issue but still ran which for £500 was worth it to me because I kinda already knew what was wrong. Sure enough start it up it idles at 3k drove it around the corner got off pulled my screwdriver out and turned down the idle speed and it has ran great ever since, although there was a small issue where the choke lever would click up to full if i went over a bump too fast which kills the engine immediately and if you don't know about it is a pain to get running again since it only has a kickstart...ofc once you know you just click the choke off start and go.
My second bike was a ZZR600 for £600 again I KNOW going in something is wrong here but maybe it's an easy fix the guy says it has trouble going into 5-6 but will if you're gentle...what he meant was it will jump unexpectedly out of gear and the gearbox will lock up randomly...I gunned it ONCE (because I'm young and dumb) the rear wheel locked up at 130mph and the skidmark left by the wheel was the least of my concerns...my poor underwear... I'm genuinely lucky to be alive. However after a bit of research and a brand new gearbox from an old stock zzr6 that got totalled for £100 and she's toured all over england and she's STILL going after being stood for 2 years because I moved to germany and there are weird registration/licence issues. (just a side note...the gearbox was missing teeth and dogs selector fork limbs and the selector drum had ways stamped down it was a real mess)
Most recently I bought an xj600 diversion (as I understand it basically the same as the FZ6 but without water cooling and side mount exhaust) I did the inspection properly although the guy was very detailed with all the work that had been done to get her almost brand new and from the look of his garage I believe him test ride and everything and for £1500 I can't say enough good things (admittedly i have not been able to ride much because of stupid german registration systems) runs great super comfortable and REALLY easy so much so my wife's had a go on it in the car park a few times with NO prior driving knowledge at all really and now that bike is hers when she has a licence.
You CAN get a fixer bike and make it work but for the love of god not as your first bike and DEFINITELY not if it's your only way to get to work honestly take years to fix it if that's what it takes to do it right DO NOT RUSH OR BE RUSHED.

I knew I was ready to upgrade and was comfortable buying used, now that I have a platform to base things off of. I recently picked up a 02' Triumph 955i RS for $2,500. I've done rear pads, new clutch cable, system flush, oil change, and spark plugs since buying. And if for whatever reason it's down for maintenance I still have the 500 =)

Bought my first bike (2009 ninja 250 with 15k on it) for 2500$ last May off of Facebook marketplace. I’ve put about 10,000 miles on her and aside from the fork seals needing to be replaced back in December, she has been reliable and has served me well. As much as I’d love to keep her as a designated track bike, I am trading her in for a Harley. I sadly can’t afford to keep two bikes much less have the space to store two bikes. She will be missed and I hope she finds a new rider who will take as much care of her as myself and her previous (also the original) owner have.
