    I find it helpful to spray brake cleaner or carb & choke cleaner down the cable to break down any schmoo/old grease/dirt and grime that may have coagulated in there. Then use compressed air to blow it on through and out the other end of the cable housing, reapplying brake cleaner as necessary. Once it doesn't appear any more old oil or brake cleaner is coming out the other end (ie all brake cleaner has been flushed out evaporated from the housing), then I add the oil and push it through with compressed air. Very thorough lubricating of the cable, quick and easy. Works a treat, and has helped me salvage plenty of grabby or sized cables.

    Gr8 tips thanks. 2:00 you can use like 3 hose clamps and slip a rubber hose over the cable and even glue it on with RTV silicone or a quick set adhesive. tape or zip tie the cable vertical and fill with 10w30 0w20 etc engine oil and leave it overnight and oil will come out on the clutch end. Cable will easily last over 50K miles. Alternative is to tilt the bike and turn handle bars to the right and put drops of 3 in 1 or air tool oil in the slot and squeeze clutch lever to work in oil (NO NEED TO DISCONNECT CABLE) with this second method - but does not work on all bikes.

    If you press the Select button on the instrument cluster it goes from Odometer/ Trip 1/ Trip 2/ RPM
    The last one will give you a digital readout of the RPM which should be between 1250 and 1350 when idling.
    If you can't get a smooth reading and it keeps jumping all over the place, you probably need to balance your Throttle Bodies.

    Hey man, your "how to change coolant" video saved me during a 1200 km trip I had the past weekend with my fz6 (radiator hoses broke during the trip and I had to fix it with rubber). I wasn't sure if the main coolant deposit was below the gas tank, but your video told me that refiling it through the radiator was fine. I was able to go back home thanks to you.

    The battery tender cable tip... i can give you i think a better tip.
    This is what i do., without removing anything, no tank, not even seat... i access the AC Regulator of the bike under the seat, with one hand you can access the regulator connector.
    you disconnect the regulator, and you will five 5 pins, the 3 AC Magneto Pins, and the postive and negative pins that goes to the battery directly.
    You can put a regular pin on the female positive end, and you can use the negative end too, but i prefer to use the bike chasis, so i just the the positive end.
    Then i connect my battery chager to the chasis and the regulator end as stated, and ... works perfectly

    Hey Calvin, could you make a video about how to remove the fuel tank completely? I have some questions - is it really necessary to dump all the fuel and how do you disconnect all those things from the pump under the tank. I would really appreciate it! :)

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey there, you don't need to remove the fuel from the tank to take the tank off. The tank has two vent hoses which slide off easily, along with two electrical connections plus the fuel line. The fuel line is a quick disconnect that doesn't require tools. You pull off a black retaining clip on top of the fuel line connection then use your fingers to squeeze the grey squares on either side of the fuel line to spread the plastic retaining clip that holds the fuel line on. You have to have some strong fingers but as you squeeze the sides of the connector pull and wiggle the hose until it releases. You'll want to cover the fuel pump attached to the tank with a finger once the hose is off just to prevent drips. Place the tank somewhere soft on its side just be mindful that fuel isn't leaking out the top fill point.
      Check out my air filter video for some shots of removing the tank:
      th-cam.com/video/jJ342O31ag4/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=CalvinMC
      Good luck!

    I have the same bike, but having issues. It suddenly died one day and never started back up. It will crank, but not start. It shows the codes 12 13 30 46. Nuetral doesn't even show so I am trying to change out the Nuetral safety switch, but can't figure out how to get to it.

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sounds like a ground cable came loose. Those codes you have are unrelated to each other, as in they are apart of several different systems. There is a ground on the back of the dash display to check and there is a ground on top of the transmission if I remember correctly. You're looking for a black electrical cable attached to the engine with a allen head bolt (I think it's an allen iirc). It would make sense that it cranks but not start if you lost a ground because the starter grounds through the engine to the chassis separately from the harness ground. Even if your neutral switch was bad you should be able to start the bike in any gear with the clutch lever pulled in. Best of luck.

    I have a fz6 09 that is showing poor fuel economy. The fuel reserve indicator starts blinking after about 180km on my odo. Tyre pressure are kept at optimum, front, rear sprockets n chain are pretty new. No issues with acceleration or throttle response. What is your fuel consumption like? How far can you go before the reserve starts blinking?

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My reserve light (f trip) comes on around 230km on a tank of city and highway. Make sure you’re filling your tank all the way, I trickle more gas in once it reaches the bottom of the basket at the top of the tank.

    Hi Calvin, was wondering if i could use chain lube for the clutch cable?😂

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't recommend it. The synthetic chain lube I use thickens up as it dries which wouldn't be good inside your clutch cable. Regular wax based chain lube might work but honestly any engine oil would be better.

    Hey Calvin, thanks for the vids - very helpful - regarding the idle speed / charging I read somewhere that the FZ6 engine only charges the battery at 4.000 rpm and above. Does the idle speed really have much of an effect on battery health ? The battery tender fixes that anyways.

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Jamie, the FZ6 charging system is always trying to charge the battery regardless of the rpm. At 5000rpm the engine is spinning fast enough to generate max charging voltage of 15 volts. If you put a multimeter on the battery with the engine running you’ll see there is a slight, yet important, difference in charging voltage around the idle speed of the bike. A low idle would mean the bike would be under producing electricity to charge the battery. This leads to a bit of drain on the electrical system since the engine is spinning below the target rpm and therefore not generating as much electricity. Hope this helps.

  • @h4xi0rek
    @h4xi0rek 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How were you able to drive it with 900 rpm idle o.O? It must've run like a tractor lol. When my idle was too low my bike would die after releasing the throttle too quickly - for example, emergency braking.

    • @Calvinm

      It won't last as long as engine oil does. Since it's tough to find aerosol spray engine oil, you can get some livestock syringes and use those to push motor oil down the cable sheath and they are infinitely reusable. I've used the same syringe for this for 15 years.

    LOL you said having your idol set properly with a solved your charging issues if you're having charging issues it would more than likely point to an intermittent problem with the regulator rectifier and or stator you know that so why did you say otherwise 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because you can have a perfectly fine stator and rectifier but still not get enough voltage at idle because your idle is low. Electrical potential is based on how fast the engine is spinning when below 5k rpm. A low idle will cause the bike to struggle to maintain charge at idle.
