You asked for it, here it is. A little bit of truth in a lighthearted video about Italian foods that don't exist in Italy and are not Italian... not even a little bit!
So what are some food that are considered "Authentic Italian" here in the United States, but don't really exist in Italy? Here is my list.
Are you surprised? I want to hear from you and feel free to expand this list if I have left anything out!
    Love,

When Italian immigration was in full throttle the immigrants didn’t have access to certain authentic foods. I believe they adapted and hence this is how some of the Italian American food was born. I’m a descendant of Italian Americans, and I was raised on traditional Italian American food like spaghetti and meatballs. The history of the immigrants and their food adaptations is fascinating. It may not be traditional Italian, but it’s delicious. Of course I’m vegan now so I adapt what I grew up with to my vegan lifestyle. Everything in life and within the parameters of history evolves. Thank you for a lovely video. Love the green eyeshadow. 🌱

Love the education so that if any one visits Italy this is what to expect when dining there. It is not surprising that the a lot of it is dishes/ideas where made up here in the US...I would think that simple and seasonal dishes made from scratch with fresh ingredients would taste so good! A college student I know who is studying in Italy raves on how good the food/wine is...lucky her! Another great video! Show us a pasta dish made with something in season! You can make us Italian! • @giannas1096
    @giannas1096 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Excellent video Annalisa, you are mostly correct however there are a few exceptions I believe depending on which region you come from. I think each region of Italy has many variations of Italian food and this is where these (more exaggerated) dishes are being drawn from. My parents are from Sicily. My mother would make garlic bread, she would refresh leftover stale bread by breaking it into pieces, putting into the oven then rubbing garlic on them and lastly drizzling a little olive oil on top. Delicious hot crunchy garlic bread! Also Pasta e broccoli is definitely an Italian meal, it’s delicious with a little oil drizzled on top - try it, you will love it. Lastly, when I was in Venice we ate at a very up market restaurant and as a pre dinner snack they served us dipping bread with oil and balsamic vinegar. What I’m trying to say is that possibly these meals do exist (or are derived from) somewhere in Italy, it’s just impossible for even an Italian to know all of them. Love your videos ❤️

The bread/dipping oil - could that be a regional thing? I’ve spent a loooooot of time in Rome and most of the restaurants I’ve been to there do it. (I sometimes have to ask for no aceto because I can’t even go near vinegar!) I should say as well that I generally try to avoid the more touristy restaurants/I don’t go out to eat in the super touristy areas… and if I see a tourist menu I run!

Day or 2 day old, hard crusty bread, olive oil & salt was a favorite snack for my Nonna and myself when I was a kid. Pane sai olio (I’m sure I mangled the spelling).
She cooked a lot with “greens” that she added something called “fat back”. Maybe it was pork fat? I know it wasn’t bacon.
Nonna cooked a LOT of fish, raised her own veggies & fruit. The first time I saw her catch a chicken 😬. I was around 7 or 8 years old. She also made something called basket cheese. It was kind of sweet, bland and creamy.

We went to the same restaurant and we had a wonderful simple meal. We were so happy.

Seems here the bulk of Italian cuisine is based on a limited number of ingredients. Tomato sauce. pasta, garlic, pizza, mozzarella etc are the basis of the Italian American cuisine
Although present in Italy, they comprise only a fraction of what is available.
So many Italian dishes are virtually unknown in US. First dishes like Canederli, cansunziei, sopa coada. Or second course like Vitello Tonnato, pastissada de caval, roasted guinea or wild boar, fiorentina steaks, bollito misto. Just to name a few. that balsamic and olive oil thing i think its a trend from tv chefs in England? i think jamie oliver might be the cause of a lot of british trends... He made italian food very popular in the uk during the 90s before then i think people were more into french food..? now i think there are probably more italian style restaurants than any other worldwide, i might be wrong but foreign italian food has become one of the most popular for home cooking and dining out. here in france there is always a pizza restaurant and pizza take away in every town and village even... we have mobile vans with pizza ovens inside them pretty much everywhere. but in france there are even weirder combinations of pizza topping... they have either tomato based or creme based... one popular topping is creme and salmon, another is potato... yes just pizza, with sliced potato on top and cheese...! the 4 cheese pizza in france omg it's absolutely full of cheese. i've never been to america but i watch so many cooking channels and i have seen pretty much every kind of american pizza through documentaries etc... the chicago deep pan one, i just cannot get my head around it. i'm not sure if i would like it or not.

Just like every ethnic cuisine it’s adapted to each country based on the culture and what’s available. This goes for Asian, Indian etc. 😁
    It’s more ‘inspired’ 😁

Love this! You could have gone on, I know!!! Starbucks is another one. When my cousins came from Rome to visit me in NY (this was years ago), they looked at the Starbucks menu, looked at me, then said, "What IS this?" 😂😂😂🤢

Oh my god the pizza section 💀
I only like margherita pizzas - and YES, a light sprinkle of mozzarella, not a mountain of it! A good pizza should be light, you shouldn’t feel like you need to lie down after three mouthfuls 😂

Yes, I was surprised! Italian cooking in Italy is the best food in the world. I would LOVE to know if the secret on how to make Pepe without the cheese melting in a one big mess. I have tried with arrowroot but to no avail. I love this dish but have failed many times. I have given up.

Taking a twist on your question, I had a salad in Roma a few years totally different than expected - mixed greens with fresh corn, large ribbons of carrots, large rings of onion, large pieces of tomatoes and radicchio. Do you think this was within the realm of Italian cuisine or created with tourists in mind? If it were possible, I’d share a photo. It was beautiful and delicious.

Margherita is my favourite pizza! People never understand why I don't put anything on my pizza, but I love the flavours on their own.
As a Mexican, there's a lot of food that Americans called "Mexican food" and they aren't😅

      Yes, simple is the best!!
I love the real Mexican food. I was in San Quintin, Baja, and had some of the best food ever! So simple! Even the little street tacos were from another planet! ❤️❤️❤️ I know what you mean!
