I love how the effects are basically "What could they do at the time with a bit more budget?" it keeps things from looking too out of place, while still looking clean and improved.
Honestly, fan edits, fan concept art / designs, fan title theme arrangements and intros and yes, fan-inserted FX - it all basically surpasses anything that the BBC are officially putting out at this point . . . Been that way for over a decade now.
25:00 - 25:18 Vastly better than the effect in The Special Edition, as that one doesn't work in principle. That is the Time Scoop shouldn't be able to enter The TARDIS, otherwise what was the reason for rushing back to it in the rest of the story, I often wondered if The 2nd Doc had landed in the Lab, Bessie was heading back to U.N.I.T. HQ, and in the Shada part, The Doc and Romana would punt back to the Professors rooms, plus the Police Box in the Blu Ray version doesn't match the prop in the adventure.
"Groovy, isn't it?" You've done a lot of these stories justice. You've made what was supposed to be scary even scarier (The Nimon cutting through the pilot, the electricity in The Face of Evil, Xoaxon killing), you've made all the laser shots perfectly match the weapon props, and you've all around made things look nicer! Well done! No wonder a lot of the CGI effects for recent boxsets look inspired by your work.
This is awesome! Far better than anything I've managed. Also, another vote for Blake's 7 effects if you have a chance. (I'm working on a new teleport effect myself, but it's slow going.)
Ah...the mingling of nostalgia with someone else's imagination... You've managed to make these scenes look more like the ones I remember in my mind's eye, than those actually broadcast!

In The Three Doctors theres a scene where The Brig and co are driving through the quarry with random explosions around them..Maybe add a plasma bolt to the scene..Also with the Gel Guards when they attack....

When updated Robot I'm surprised that they never fixed the last episode with CGI on the the giant robot's legs either when they released it on dvd or Season 12 blu-ray as parts of visual effects could been easily fixed with today's technology.
If BBC announced Doctor Who: The Collection either Seasons 16 (The Key to Time Saga) or 21 Blu-Ray Boxset, your updated effects should be included in one big package!
Watching this, there are some sound effects (particularly the weapon sounds) that leave a lot to be desired. What do you think? What if you did a dubbing over some of the original sound effects (again primarily the weapon sounds)
I agree. Actually, I have used a handful of new sound effects here and there. I had to use new sounds for the entire Delta and the Bannermen battle, because it had no sound or music (from the Blu-ray special features), so I took some sounds from the BBC archive, I think. There are a few extra laser rifle sounds for Warriors of the Deep too, either because the originals were too quiet or didn't match the action. I also added one or two new explosion sounds or engine sounds for spacecraft. But I agree completely, having some more new sounds would really sell the new effects a bit more. Mind you, so would new editing! There are so many action sequences in classic Who that would benefit from better editing - in fact entire episodes could do with it. It's a shame that we only get the occasional recreated omnibus editions on the Blu-rays, almost every classic Who story would benefit enormously from a good re-edit. Remember when they used to do those for the VHS releases? Bring 'em back I say! :-)
Ideally, these CG updated effects should look feasible for the era the episodes were originally broadcast, which is something A LOT of past updates struggled with. You don’t seem to have that problem.
Of course I've watched Blake's 7!! I ♥️ Blake's 7 almost as much as classic Dr. Who, and I'm really sad that it's never had a HD release (and also sad and surprised that no one's ever rebooted it). It's still one of the best space-sci-fi series ever made. I have thought about having a go at Blake's 7, and if they do ever release a HD version, and I've run out of classic Who stories to do, then I'm it'll probably be the next thing I do. But, if I'm honest, doing the effects for B7 scares me a bit because there are just so many effects shots! It would certainly keep me occupied for a couple of years 😅
