This shows how good Richard Hurndall was in The Five Doctors as he got the softer and lighter side of the 1st Doctor spot on, the only thing was missed opportunity was when he goes 'Nothing happens until you get to the fifth row' is the 1st Doctor would let a little chuckle and was missing the famous 'Hmm' but that's literally a small thing, he got everything else perfect.
Richard Hurndall was as perfect to play Hartnell as you could get. His voice was a little to high pitch but his inflections and speech patterns where spot on. This video makes me appreciate his appearance even more because with a little ai trickery its almost indistinguishable from ol Bill
Brilliant video, very interesting to watch! I also must say that this has really shown me how good a job Richard Hurndall did in his performance and line delivery, because now I've heard his performance with a Hartnell filter over the top, it does really feel very much like a Hartnell performance!
I came to the comments to make sure someone stated that this deep fake should no way diminish the brilliant performance by Richard Hurndall where he really gets the essence of Hartnell's performance without just being a pale imitation or a parody. It is very difficult to do that as an actor.
Love it. This is absolutely fantastic. It’s strange to think that Hartnell in the Five Doctors could possibly have happened. He passed away relatively young (67). If he had been alive to appear, Hartnell would have been the exact same age (75) in 1983, as David Bradley was when he portrayed the First Doctor in ‘Twice Upon A Time’.
As a trained actor, I will say what I’ve always said about AI and deepfakes of dead actors… at the end of the day, you’re not seeing William Hartnell. You’re seeing Richard Hurndall wearing a William Harrell mask. He doesn’t move the way Hartnell moved, he doesn’t make the physical choices Hartnell made, he doesn’t have the physical mannerisms or gestures Hartnell had when playing the role. This is still a Richard Hurndall performance, and no amount of deepfake technology can possibly alter the performance to be the way William Hartnell would have played it. The fundamental fact is he would NOT have played it this way. So all we can really see here is a rubber William Hartnell mask placed on a different actor.
That’s amazing! Thank you! With the deep fake software we could have a 70th anniversary season where each episode features one of the Doctors as they appeared originally in the show.
ooooh that's a little strong I'd say, but it surely has potential. The wide shots, where he's not still, are sometimes ready to publish. The still shots look a bit frozen, and the close-ups are pretty terrible, but nothing that can't be sorted out with a few weeks of work.
This is rather wonderful. It gives us a glimpse of The Five Doctors had it been possible with all the original actors, and yet doesn't totally erase Richard Hurndall's excellent performance. So it's a lovely tribute to both Hartnell and Hurndall.
The technology is really starting to get there! There's some bits of this which are excellent and really magic seeing and hearing Hartnell in it. Though Hurndall did a wonderful job and created a complete character for it too.
That is amazing! Mind-blowing! Well done! Imagine when the tech improves to allow for even more realistic facial expressions and voiceover! In fact, at some point, even Troughton and Pertwee could be de-aged to appear how they did during their eras on the series! And this tech could be applied to all Anniversary Crossover episodes featuring previous Doctors and Companions... the possibilities are limitless! - Chris
This was truly amazing. Hartnell, in this edit re-release version, makes it feel like it belongs. Nothing against the actor who played the first doctor, but this seems legit.
My gawd! This is incredible. This just goes to prove that anything and everything will be possible - in this respect - in a few more years. AI will change everything and every missing episode of Doctor Who - and others - will be recreated. Not a case of if, but when.
What’s most impressive is the voice, it really is as if Hartnell is alive and acting again! As usual commonly said, “this is the worst it will ever be” and will only get better, becoming indistinguishable in a few years or less!
This has to be put into the full version one day. A few little mistakes but 100% a love letter and better than anything I could ever do. Technology is getting better by the day and in the future this could be so well done you wouldn't even know it wasn't originally Hartnell. And he looks fantastic in colour. Brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant.
One of the best " double-takes " in history, i was like hang on.........But Hartnell wasn't in that, he had died before...lol, Amazing work here, its wonderful on so many levels, beautiful rendering and voice, now Doctor Who, or part of its keynote History feels wonderfully complete. Thankyou !
He needs to blink also a touch of reverb will help blend the voice into the locations as it sounds too flat and dubbed. The only other problem I don't think can be overcome is the shape of the head. But an excellent effort.
This is such a cool edit oh my god. Its so interesting seeing the writing feel so consistent with Billy’s line delivery. Now id be curious to see an AI version of Day of the Doctor with Tennant’s hair actually looking correct 😭😭😭
Part of me says this is altering history - the other part says I can still have the version they made but this (or an even more polished version as the technology evolves) is terrific. Really authentic - top job!
Descript's 'StudioSound' fixes his voice too. It's utterly brilliant. I recorded the original from the studio - well, some of it :-) I made a demo but I can't post it. Anyone who would like to hear my version, DM me.
With this edit and the edits of adding in Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, we could have a truer version of The Five Doctors with the original five actors.
I never connected with Hurndall’s performance and thought the portrayal and writing for the 1st Doctor was kinda off but now I’m seeing that I was VERY wrong.
Hartnell always had a special glint to him. Technology is becoming scary, can you imagine special editions where they fix stuff like this? I don't think it will ever happen for good reason, but I've always wondered what it would've been like to have Hartnell in every episode his Doctor appeared. With a better voice sample and more generation cycles, who knows what this would've become?
Great job. Hopefully the AI technology will get better with the visuals but vocally it's so good to hear the voice of William Hartnell saying the lines in his style. It really sounded like the proper first Doctor.
IIRC, there's some technology I think Adobe? or someone came out with that uses AI to remaster old audio to sound studio quality. Might be worth looking into to run a bunch of Hartnell's lines through, and then train an AI on *that* to get a crystal clear version that'd match better with the improved audio quality of the later Who eras.
Great work. Looks and sounds like Hartnell, but really demonstrates how unlike Hartnell the performance and dialogue was. Such a shame the playfulness of the original portrayal wasn't emphasised at the time. For years I misunderstood the first Doctor until I watched his actual episodes.
This is absolutely Amazing!!! Can’t wait for technology to get to the point that we can have all the Missing Episodes, Big Finish adventures and SHADA done as live action appearing indistinguishable from filmed episodes! Or rather this shows the tech is already there but probably too cost prohibitive at the moment? This is absolutely fantastic and would love to have this as an optional effect! Of course my childhood self also wants Tom Baker somehow inserted into more than just the 2 scenes he got..and since we’re dreaming, K9. Weds to be with them in the Death Zone as well as the missing Auto Scene for Sarah and the 3rd Doctor, and would be nice if Earthshock had a clip of Pertwee from the Five Doctors “And as this, he led a squadron of Cyberman to their destruction…in the Death Zone of Gallifrey!” (Hey, if the Cybies had a clip of Tom Baker from their personal future, the. Anything is possible! Excellent work , truly impressive!!
It's odd that, for me, the second I see Hartnell's face over Richard Hurndall's body - I cannot but help continually noticing that the first Doctor is far, far too tall.
Well if they did this on national television I think it would be disgustingly disrespectful. I don’t think the bbc treat the show with disrespect they give if a big push. This is an impressive TH-cam edit no hate to that
Let’s be honest, if BBC did this it will be a big level of disrespect. I mean this is a good edit, but this also shows the dangers of deepfakes and ai using dead actors
This is awesome! Could you try editing in Hartnell into The Three Doctors? I know he's technically already in it, but I'm meaning like adding him into the sets with Troughton and Pertwee. Maybe you could cut him out of one of his episodes, colorize him then paste him into some of the scenes. I don't know maybe it'd be clunky but would be worth a try, I think!
This is awesome… the only unrealistic giveaway is Hartnell knowing all his lines.
The Borusa line I heard Resident Borusa, not President, but yes, you’re correct.

Great edit. Also, I love the idea that Hartnell's voice just naturally has that "60's muffle" 😂
Genuine question: is it because it's from the '60s? Because other shows like The Saint never sounded like that. This is almost Darth Vader territory.
@@davidfriend4328 just low budget tapes...
@@davidfriend4328 just low budget tapes...
@@davidfriend4328 Probably because he used Hartnell's voice from the old episodes in order to train the AI, so it came with warts n all

My sentiments exactly.
Yes.

This is essentially if William Hartnells health got better and he lived past 1975
And if he wasn't able to blink.
Brilliant video, very interesting to watch!

Fantastic work! Loved Richard Hurndall in The Five Doctors, but oh! What a treat seeing and hearing William Hartnell!

It makes the whole episode seem more authentic, great job.
This is excellent. I just took it for granted I was watching William Hartnell !

Hartnell, Troughton and Pertwee together. Fantastic.
All credit to your talent and hard work. Well done.
Amazing, especially the voice! The technology just keeps getting better and better.
That’s amazing! Thank you! With the deep fake software we could have a 70th anniversary season where each episode features one of the Doctors as they appeared originally in the show.
Great job amazing Richard did a good job emukating his mannerisms and this voice and face looks exactly like hartnell great job
Well it is automated - you've seen this sort of thing for a few years on TH-cam before?
I've just come in from a long shift at work and this has made my night, totally amazing!
This is great!!!! It's like William Hartnell was actually there!
The ai voice is pretty bang on surprisingly, the ai face is my sleep paralysis demon
I only want to watch it like this now. Holy shit that was good, more please.
It’s not just that you nail Hartnell’s voice, but you got his inflection and vocal pattern perfectly.
Probably the best AI work I have ever seen re: DW.

This is Hartnell's face (more or less), but the dialogue is still by Hurndall and his delivery is just...not how Hartnell would have ever said it.
This is rather wonderful. It gives us a glimpse of The Five Doctors had it been possible with all the original actors, and yet doesn't totally erase Richard Hurndall's excellent performance. So it's a lovely tribute to both Hartnell and Hurndall.
