Glad you 5-0ed with my list. I actually just 5-0ed again over the weekend. Also that last game is how many games go where you win off a grindy top deck with 1-3 life. Also I take the madman comments as compliments :)
Btw you guys didn’t see the value or impact of currency converter and faerie macabre against scam or reanimator. #1 currency converter stops scam from truly discarding your cards into your graveyard and stops reanimating them. #2 macabre with currency converter out is a free 2/2 that stops reanimator or uro
@@jeremyrowe8224 It was 4 chrome mox and 1 diamond. The mox diamond was because of the times saga would pop and I’d too many lands in hand and the number of draws with multiple soul lands and no colored sources for a turn 1 3 drop. Not critical to the list and I’ve boarded out the mox diamond many times for a hate piece. Also cute that if you have currency converter in play and you play mox diamond you trigger the converter…. Which has been relevant. Also the land count is low for decks that traditionally play mox diamond.
This deck has so much versatility and cards able to dip twice (Sevinne's Reclamation, Eternal Dragon, Currency Converter, Urza's Saga, Crucible of Worlds, etc.) that it has absolutely insane amounts of card advantage. I feel like this deck has been tuned from play experience, with likely hundreds of games developing its current iteration. I think that sideboard is actually better than first look might seem. For example, Touch the Spirit Realm and Solitude serve two functions each, whereas Swords to Plowshares has only 1 function. The highly versatile sideboard works with the versatility of the deck, so that when sideboarding, your sideboard cards have higher likelihood of not only affecting the opponent's maindeck, but often screwing over their sideboard plan too.
Dude, that was my exact logic and yes I had several iterations of this before I landed on this deck and sideboard. I tried Karn at one point, no mox Diamond, 1 currency converter etc.
I'm watching game 3 now, and I feel like Eagles could be replaced with a card: "Land Cyclers are good actually; No Casting Cost; Planeswalker; White Colour indicator; Plainscycling {1}"
Planeswalker is too good because it’s too good of a typing for delirium and such. It could be a white instant with no cast cost or effect, just plainscycling (1), lmao.
"Why didn't they have the eagles fly them from the shire directly to Mount Doom?" turns out this fan argument also works for MTG now as to why Phil didn't have the eagles fly him to 5-0 from the beginning.
Fun fact about healing salve: all the other boons have been remade with weaker, "fixed" versions. Healing salve is the only one that had a *stronger* "fixed" version. Healing Grace from DOM was just salve but you get both modes. It was still unplayable. also giant growth is there too.
Some that come to mind for me are: Brainstorm, Cabal Ritual, Shock, and for giant growth it's a bit muddier but maybe titanic growth, there's so many different versions of giant growth though.@@josecelsofreitas5075
@@josecelsofreitas5075 jace's ingenuity (5 mana for ancestral recall) and lightning strike (2 mana for lightning bolt) come to mind as directly 'fixed' versions of the cycle. pyretic ritual (2 mana for color-pie-corrected dark ritual) also counts imo. giant growth has gotten a lot of variants (and reprints) over the years but im not sure about any strictly nerfed version of the card. of course if you defined 'fixed' as a nerfed effect rather than a fixed cost, shock, every blue cantrip ever (brainstorm especially), and quite a few more cards could count. i'm just thinking about cards with the exact same effect (or the same effect corrected for the modern color pie) but with more appropriate costs.
It’s always funny how cycles are usually “the red blue and black ones are automatically playable, the white one is completely useless, and the green one… is just there”
More than eagles, Currency Converter CARRIED HARD. The synergy between Touch’s Channel, Mox Diamond’s discard and the plainscyclers was huge this league. We will never ever cast an Eagle but it is still worth the inclusion in this list.
I played this deck on Xmage after seeing the decklist on mtggoldfish and I had no idea what I was doing. I figured it was supposed to be a stompy deck... I'm glad I get to see how this was intended to be played
A funny thing about Healing Salve is it now actually has value but specifically in commander. For Will, Scion of Peace it's basically a strictly better Dark Ritual because it reduces the cost of your blue and white spells by 3 colorless for that turn. Its also now a strictly better Giant Growth because of Treebeard, Gracious Host as he can give himself 3 +1/+1 counters from a Healing Salve. And its now basically a Lightning Bolt because of Firesong and Sunspeaker.
Maybe there was also some lucky draws and hand involves, but: I think the variety of black decks with many colorless mana sources showed how much it can screw you over. In this deck there is 16 cards that say you start on at least 2 mana, possibly 3. The 3cmc spells in this deck are VERY powerful i think. And i think what made this deck work so good is that between timeless and eagles there are 6 cards that represent a Land, or a card to pitch to chrome mox, and possibly a 2/2 rogue on top of that. And they tecnically also pitch to mox diamond as they can get you back a land in hand after you pitched a land to mox diamond. With the chalice as a turn 2 play you can bridge the gap into your 3 mana spells on turn 2 very often and converter can take over grindy games by itself. Also having few double-colored-pips helped a lot to use the sol lands to their fullest capability. I dont think you would reliably 5:0 with that by any means, nor that eagles is a strong card in general. But maybe in this specific context a card that can represent a land, a pitch and a token is just more valuable than playing another 4 removals. As you said, it didnt feel like you did the most powerful things but especially compared to some of the decks in the recent weeks it felt like one of the decks that can bring its power to the table most consitently. Basically "it cant do the best things, but what it can do it does pretty reliably". I´d like to see more of that deck, as i agree these games werent the toughest matchups you ever had. But on the other hand it also didnt feel like one of those deck that "can maybe sneak a win or two" but is pretty legit. and if i may add, it was a very fun deck to watch. Just very likable cards like timeless, converter, march, archon, 3ball etc.
Just watching process... Game 2 ends "If I 5-0 with eagles...", game 4 ends "If I 5-0 with eagles..." game ends and you're still processing that trophy. Deck looked solid in play.
*Sees Eagles of the North in this video after having watched you lose to it in your Eomer video* "Dread it, run from it, your destiny arrives all the same..."
i think currency converter is the real sleeper here with the landcyclers, so maybe there is even a stronger build ? Landcyclers fix your manabase and trim your deck while enabling more utility lands. Maybe Staff of the storyteller can be a single card controll piece, but so slow so you need taxation or disruption
At 1:03:35, was that just a strict misplay by your opponent to cast sheoldred’s edict on your turn instead of casting it on theirs to save the peacekeeper?
See i figured that eagles was playable in something like this or D&T but not like lorien revealed or troll levels of playable. Was not expecting a 5-0 though. 4-1 probably but not trophying. This might shake the meta up quite a bit with a more solid sideboard.
I know hindsight is 20/20, but it's wildly obvious that a deck with fast mana, good manabase and a ton of exile removal is going to be very strong in the current meta.
If you can't beat the Eagles, you join them. I can feel your mixed emotions at the end of the video. That saddest a man can feel after getting a trophy.
Tivadar's Crusade wow realy. that the cards you put in your commender deck just to see the face of your friend that play Kranko, zada and co. no no I swear I am not building my deck to annoy you gaming before playing Royal Decree.
Reanimating Troll? Great. Fixing your mana? Okay. Using landcycling cards as either a land or a pitch to elemental/force? SURE. But for the most part I cannot understand why people are using these landcycling cards in seemingly every deck. Even this one. Would, say, 3 real white cards and a plains really not work better than eagles?
So you'd want to take out the Currency Converter too, right? Then we can also probably take out Timeless Dragon. And now you've got every other mono-W stompy list. This list is solving some of the problems that mono-W stompy has with sort of just living off the top of the deck with the inclusion of Currency Converter as part of the saga package and is also solving the issue of "I have all this colorless mana and all these white pips". If you really look at the list, as well as the way it played out, I think you'll find that the Eagles are absolutely the card that this specifuc deck needs.
