yeah basically in the old rules you couldn’t react to cards like culling the weak or dark ritual because mana sources were faster than interupts(basically instants). the only thing faster than a mana source in the old rules was removing your pants (there’s a silver boarder card with denimwalk)
Yeah, I ended up cutting Culling in most cases, as well. Never got to really utilize them as wished and, therefore, they have been removed from the list after a couple of leagues. Thanks a lot for showcasing the deck, though! 😍😍
Yeah, I conceptually liked Culling, and it raises the ceiling for your opening hands by quite a bit, but I think it's too a bit too situational for the average game.

Ohhhhhhh Nice! This beats is what I’ve been jamming recently featuring Phyrexian Obliterators. Surprised by the 0 helms side, those felt important to my build. No wastelands in mind and some real spicy things you got, but I couldn’t smash the like button faster.
Culling the weak brings back memories. As a kid I used it and dark ritual to ramp into buried alive and living death. I didn't have multiple copies of good reanimation targets but getting a Verdent Force, a Aboroth, and Ebon Praetor into play early was nice. normally things like Blood pet and Hidden Horror early game to fuel things out.
Coool deck, I'd really love to see more mono-Black with stable mana bases. The number of hands you just can't keep is highly problematic. Loving the content as usual ❤
Phil is lying about the girlfriend hoodie story. She didn't order her own, she actually STOLE Phil's hoodie and he had to order a new one. This sounds more accurate in terms of GF's
I'm kinda thinking about a version of this deck with chrome mox, more lord skitter, and cutting wasteland, culling the weak and prolly murderous rider. just cause I felt like this deck had too many situations where it just couldn't really do a meaningful thing on turn 1, because it's only meaningful t1 plays are grief scam or dark ritual which feels like not enough density.
I do not understand swinging with skitter that last game of round 2, you had enough blockers in hand to win with dauthi and the lands to cast them. You’d fold to a force either way so why risk it to the onboard knowledge?
Not really a matter of it being fast or slow enough, just what deck does a 5/5 idiot with no ETB have a meaningful impact against? Huge majority of the time it gets countered, swords'd, kill spelled, etc. And unlike Shelly, it doesn't have the "answer me right now or scoop" effect. best case it needs to untap 2-3 times to close a game.

Phil - You've been playing *so* many mono-B piles lately. I'm not complaining - but I am curious: I'm a DnT player myself, and I made the transition to Yorion DnT a while back, and then the transition to BW DnT after Bowmasters dropped. I love DnT, but it doesn't seem good at all these days. It seems like Mono-Black and Iniative are just doing DnT things but better. So my question: are you drawn to Mono-B because it has a similarly tax-sh plan like the deck you used to be known to pilot best?

I think what we learned today is that Dark Ritual is a very, very good Magic: The Gathering card.

Lord Skitter seems like a black Unlicensed Hearse, give or take. Not bad as a one-of, maybe two in the sideboard. But pretty ok.
