My Brother's 1964 Plymouth Fury Is A Ratty, Smoky, Grimy Daily Driver (With Hidden Surprises Inside)

  • Crappy, disgusting paint that looks like it was last washed during the Clinton administration? Check. Missing part of the floor and various bits of metal elsewhere? Yep. Manual transmission and various handling upgrades? Oh yeah. That settles it, it's a Colin car. At least he's consistent, you know? There's something to be said for that. Anyway, this '64 Fury has lived several lives - first as a normal factory car from '64 to '70, then as a 340 powered street racer in the 70s and 80s, as a garage ornament for many years, and now as a zombie street machine with a random V8 and a four speed. It's a car that looks like it belongs in a junkyard (because it probably does,) but there is a bit more to it than immediately meets the eye.

    Love it man, it reminds me of our cars in the late 70’s early 80’s, when you could still buy a cool car for $300 bucks and fix it up as you could afford to.

    I had a '64 Plymouth Savoy for a time when I lived in Los Angeles. It was totally plain Jane--slant 6, three on the tree, basic transportation and nothing more. It was a beige color. I really liked that car. The front grill design and the back tail lights were just enough to give the car a cool look, even though it was just a plain Jane. I ended up trading it for a motorcycle. I've always told myself that if I ever find another one, I will get it.

    In 64 lap type seatbelts were mandatory for the first time. 63 was the last year they were optional. The first full mass production car they were optional in was the 55 Ford and the other manufacturers quickly followed suit in offering them as an option.

    The beauty of classic cars as daily
    Classic Car: Can buy one not too pretty or too rough to drive (depending what it is) for $5k or less
    Brand new car: $30k for a base model, enjoy
    Classic car: Can have as much power or torque as you want depending on the amount of elbow grease you use
    Brand new car: Enjoy your 1.5L with 150hp and -3 torque
    Classic car: Will always work as it should if you maintain it
    Brand new car: Will always be a piece of shit from the factory. Enjoy your monthly recall or software update and thousands of dollars in repairs after the warranty runs out before the payments do.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having lived daily driving classic cars exclusively for many years, I have to counter that with
      Classic car: dumb little things will go wrong frequently. Today your voltage regulator is bad for a third time. Your brand new alternator exploded for no reason. Surprise! Your choke doesn’t work anymore. Your fuel pump is pumping fuel just fine, but suddenly most of it is going into the crankcase for a special treat. Your new belts squeak just like your old belts! All of those bits of rust and grime that have been rolling around in the tank for thirty years just found their way to your fuel pickup, and the truck you drove two hours without issue yesterday won’t run anymore today. Enjoy your time spent on the side of the road!
      With that caveat, I agree 😁 and it’s usually simple stuff that is easily diagnosed and fixed.

    That would be a nice car to restore it and make some money by selling it!

      I can’t even imagine what restoring that car would cost… It’s so rough. And at the end of all that, it’s still a 318 car. Not worth much.

      I don’t think he ever will. He entertained the thought once. More inclined to sell his Valiant I think.
