Back in 1987, I was in college and working at the local Mom & Pop Chrysler Plymouth dealer. A guy I met at school had a Nova with a choppy 350, and wanted to get into MoPars. He sold the Nova and bought a '70 Dart Swinger 340 (real musclecar!), minus engine/trans. I had recently bought a '77 Newport 400/727 that was traded in at the dealership for $100 (!!!), Lean Burn and all. I did a Gunk Motor flush on it, replaced the leaky orange rubber valve cover gaskets, and washed the engine with foamy Engine Brite. It ran great, and my friend offered me $300 for the motor and trans, and agreed to buy the parts and pay my labor to put it all together. He bought a Comp 280 cam, Weiand 8008 Action intake, and got me to order the Direct Connection K-frame and headers (made by "JR Headers"), which back then were an astounding $800 for both. With the stock 3.23 open rear, the thing was a tire fryer, but ran pretty good overall and was really docile with a good lumpy idle. Aaah to be young again!!

That is definitely a weird Valiant, but in a good way. A lot of motor for a small car. Also crazy how everything worked pretty much after sitting all those years!
Great video brought back memories. I had an Aussie 4dr Valiant fitted with a 383 from a Superbee or Roadrunner (low block?) Was a terrifying car especially in gas consumption. I sold it to a mate that rebuilt it was 470hp on dyno. Was a rough car though.
@Dead Dodge Garage I'm so glad you finally found me a Mopar muscle car, And you freakin' washed it too. Thanks! I just love it, like, Everything. Sounds like they ordered one of the old Purple Shaft cams for it. Ready.
@@DeadDodgeGarage It really does! I'm making plans to move back out west and when I sell this house @ 3xs what I paid for it (for reals, not kidding) I'm hoping to find myself a new old toy. I just really need one.
From an old retired MOPAR/JEEP technician, AWSOME find gentlemen! That would be my car show piece for nice driving weather as is! Love the sound of Mopar big blocks!
That’s a cool valiant there is a guy that that comes to our local car cruise in that has one with a 426 hemi 4 speed completely crammed in it. I have a box of maybe 25 brand new 76 antenna balls. Can’t remember how I got them but I have had them for at least 25 years 👍🇺🇸
Another great video Jamie! Really enjoy the no nonsense videos. Thanks for taking the time to make videos. I don’t know anything about Dodge/Chrysler products and I find myself wanting to get one. Hope to see more in your brothers hoptie. 😮
That’s the most amazing barn find situation video I’ve seen. They usually are rusty ,crusty, dusty and broke. It was like an engineering type or technician built it. Incredible!,
I love that car, I've had many A body cars. My favorites are 68 to 72, in my opinion the coolest Mopars are 68s. There's just something cool about the round side marker lights. Before fleeing Washington for Idaho I Did buy a 76 Dart, I had to buy it. It was 225 three on a tree converted to a 440 4 speed with 8 3/4 posi and disc brakes. Desperately needs paint. This channel is fun to watch, thank you
Loved this video. What a sleeper this car is. I'm an old gray-haired Mopar guy. My first ride was a new '71 Duster when I was senior in high school. I've always wanted to do a V-8 swap in an old Valiant or Dart of this vintage. I want this car! Please sell me this car to save me the time!!
What a nice car with a professional looking engine swap. It makes for an awesome sleeper. At 18:50 you comment in how long it takes the starter to spin down. Although it's been ages since i have had a Highland Park Hummingbird apart, I recall a leather washer located between the pinion gear and the housing. In the 1969 parts manual it's called "Washer, Pinion Shaft Gear", Part No. 2095 114. I believe it's purpose is to slow the spinning mass when the starter drive disengages. Maybe that washer is missing or worn out. I know it's a minor issue, but the excessive spinning reqires the driver to wait until it stops before resuming cranking, otherwise the starter drive has a tendency to grind against the flywheel or torque converter teeth. Please keep up the great work.
Interesting! I have experienced many that take a long time to stop like that. I have never actually had one apart (at least with any hope of putting it back together.) Thanks!
That is one of my bucket cars and cram a 440 in it with frame connectors and some hemisphere stayed torque boxes fore and aft for add strength and a slightly darker green metallic with the white top. Funny how that Valiant is so close to my vision for one!!!!!
The 67 Valiant and Dart are my favorite Mopar besides the 69 Charger. That thing’s a beauty, but like you said i think that rear stripe has got to go lol only other thing id do is give it a sure-grip rear end and maybe replace the rotting exhaust with a stainless exhaust and fix the squeaks up front. But other than that she just needs to be enjoyed now! Great vid!
The exhaust seems to be intact, and it sounds so good… it’s a strange looking setup though. If the stripe was a decal, that would be really easy to deal with, but it’s painted on 😞
@@DeadDodgeGaragelet me rephrase that, its not rotting off i just hate how you can see all that rust on the tips lol but ya them being painted on sucks, you’d have to get it re sprayed and at that point id probably just learn to live with it lol either way sweet car but if i were you id just hold on to your Valiant man. Love that rat rod look
I love it, and it must have been a mature person (adult) who took the time and effort to keep the A/C functional. I’ve got the same Mopar Performance book, I had a 69 2 dr Valiant that I did the 340 springs, brakes, fast ratio steering, and 4 speed swap into, but in the end, I kept the six and hopped it up, I already had a heavy hitter Hemi sitting in the garage.
What a beauty ❗️ That ‘68 is SO awesome…. my mom bought one in ‘68, slant 170. Saved my life when I hit a tree🆘 Brought back SO many memories 🥰 Leave it as is, I’d buy that sweetheart in a heartbeat 💓 Subscibed😇
I had a slick little 69 valiant I used as my daily driver back in 1988. I traded it to a 1972 340 Cuda that had a blown engine, sure wish I'd foreseen the future back then!
Very nice, I would like to see more T L C given to this beauty, full paint detail after the engine sprayed completely with (Simple Green) then pressure washed. (Simple Green) cleans greese better than anything when used full strength on a cool or cold engine, it is biodegradable and will not damage paint. You really found a Dimond in the rough with this beautiful time capsule. I would check the gear ratio, 373:1 would be ideal with posi. I love this little car .
In the early 70's our family had basically this exact car, same color no vinyl top, same red stripe, same black interior and with the 225 6 cylinder no AC. All basically same but a 4 door. My dad was cheap and this fit the bill. This car brings back memories.
That 383 in this Valiant sounds nice. I know about that instrument panel shelf because eons ago, I had a 1968 Plymouth Barracuda fastback with a 318 2bbl. It was a runner.
What a clean valiant, should scoot with that HP 383, it runs good for having sat so long!!! Great engine!! My brother had a 70 rt se challenger with an indy headed 440 and a 727, plumb crazy purple! He also had a 71 demon 340 4 speed with a 391 sure grip, that car was qwk!!! He currently has a 71 challenger plumb crazy pistol grip 4 speed and a 440 stroked to 500 cubes, has a shaker and a spoiler, nice mopar!!!!
I like this car and its obviously telling you to keep it. In '84 I wanted a '69 Grand Prix but couldn't afford it so I bought a '72 Challenger R/T while stationed in Bremerton WA. Tawny Gold Met, Magnum 500 wheels, Frost White vinyl top, Tan vinyl highback bucket seat interior w/Slap-Stik Torquefight Auto. 318, original AM/FM. It was an officers wife's car bought new from LaGrange Dodge in IL. I paid $1200.00. No leaks/issues. Drove it from Bremerton to San Diego. No leaks/issues. From San Diego to Houston and back. No issues. When I was transferred to Camp Pendleton I got a stipend to live off base in San Diego. Commuted back and forth daily. Just kept it tuned and the fliuds and filters changed. Finally I wanted a few extras and traded it for a loaded '76 Regal S/R. Over 40 cars later and that Mopar remains the most dependable of any classic Ive ever owned including my '55 Caddy, '60 T-Bird, '65 Riviera and many others. 👍🏾
Awesome story. Except, wait, there were no R/Ts anymore starting in ‘72. I live in Bremerton myself for a few years in the 90s. Technically born in Seattle, but we lived on the Kitsap peninsula and moved south a couple times until we ended up here in Aberdeen in 2000.
Awesome car!!! I think the 383 is one of the best engines ever made. I still have an offenhouser six pack intake manifold I bought at a Mopar swap meet in the mid 80's.
Oh dang, that’s awesome. A six pack 383 some day would be fine. I completely agree - I am torn between the 340 and the 383 for my favorite engine of all time. There are no wrong answers.
I am and always will be an A body guy at heart. B bodies are awesome, and make great drivers. But the A body is my happy place. Give me a warmed over small block, some bolt on performance goodies, some classic day two wheels, and ideally three pedals…
My Dad happened across an early 60's valiant with the straight 6 in it. It had the Penzoil sticker from Jiffy Lube where the lil' Grandma from Glendale dutifully got the oil changed for the life of the car. It stopped running and my Dad ended up with it. We took off the timing cover and it was so gunked up you could've made candles with it. So we flushed the motor out and put in fresh oil. Thing started right up and was a reliable runner. I was too young to really like it at the time. But it was in pristine shape - blue with that 60's blue interior. After a break job - I don't think we ever had to do anything to the car except drive it lol.
Mike is 68 valiant I'm a Chevy man but I like dodgers too and you really turn me on to him you really know your stuff keep up the good work Steve from Annapolis Maryland
I see an electric radiator fan set, a larger/higher-output alternator and swapping the Llama Barn Valiant's handling parts on in it's future... along with maybe the aftermarket power steering pump kit I've seen made for this body/engine combo.😉
I hate electric fans. I will only use them if it’s like the only option. I like the simple reliability of the mechanical units. If I were to be lucky enough to own this one, I think they’re still selling sway bars and subframe connectors 😁 this one actually has some suspension upgrades and disk brakes already. It’s just about good to go as is.
Another nice find, especially since the condition is fantastic, AND the modifications have been done so well. That would be a fun car being so small and light with the 383 HP. I wonder what the story was with the last owner.
Like this car seems to be a bit of a sleeper at a stop light...varoooom !!!!! Just love your channel and I am a Cadillac fan have two I am slowly bringing back to life I am old but slow...🤣👍...Find a 49 caddy fastback work on that outside your comfort zone.😂😎👍
My friend Josh (who supplied a handful of mostly non-Mopar channel projects in earlier days) is a huge Cadillac nut and hoarder. In fact a got a ‘61 of his running once. Most of his interest in them is in the late 50s though. He has a handful at this point.
What a Classic Plymouth Valiant? It was truly the first "Pony Car" in 1964! The Ford Mustang came out a whole half-year later 1964 1/2! This Plymouth Valiant with that Awesome 383 will fly! Please leave it as is!
You are thinking of the Barracuda. The Valiant was a sedan first, and came in 1960. Its Ford branded competition was the Falcon. Also, this definitely stays as it is!
👍Nice old ride. 1984 @ 15, my brother gave me an old Dodge Dart w/ a 318. After bustin its a*s down the road & taking out some mailboxes cause it got away from me, my Dad said to give it back to my brother as it’d end up killing me. Sad day but I enjoyed smokin off that rear drivers side tire! :-) 👍🇺🇸
Perfect car to do a V8 swap and they did a nice clean job! She needs a little more Tire on the back. Can't believe the air works! She's happy to be alive!
What a neat find. Solid modifications. Only thing I'd change is to put in a posi diff, 3.23 or 3.55. The stripe is wrong: too bad it's painted on. Nice car, great presentation. I'm subscribing.
Back when my wife was stationed in Monterey at DLI we bought my 74 duster spent tons of affordable mopar money on the Schumacher small block the big block conversion stuff when we stuffed a 440 in my duster it was cool. I did learn a valuable lesson then cost a little bit, but it’s worth it too bad you can’t buy cars like that anymore at affordable prices now everybody wants new car price for a boat anchor.
I had a 70 Valiant with the 225 slant 6. Bought it from an old lady with 38k miles on it back in 1984. Same color, but with a black painted top. Shoulda kept it!!
I did not find a dead Dodge in this video, but I will take the 30 day free subscriber special in hopes that there is one in the next video. Great video and a awesome car!
Nice! Watch out for intermittent problems with that orange ignition unit tho. Mine went bad. Best thing I ever did was replace it with a MSD unit. Faster off the line.
I just love this Car- cuz I love A-Bodies, and this isn't one you see every day -even back in the Day ! Oh man, it must be a blast to work at Rocket and see stuff come in every week that just blows your mind...
I'd daily the HECK out of that thing. Maybe put in an overdrive transmission or at least a tall-geared 3rd member to swap in for highway cruising. The working A/C makes it for me, I love driving my '70 Duster but here in Georgia that doesn't work so well in the summertime without A/C.
A good upgrade with very little rigging. But keeping the A/C more than makes up for any subtle rigging that was done with the terminal block in the engine compartment
I just don’t even know what the extra wiring is for. It shouldn’t have needed any! Slant six ignition wiring is even long enough for a big block already. Anyway, it works… It’s probably fine.
Jamie says “you better not disappoint me” before the burn out, think it worked out ok 😂
We’re all disappointed by the one tire not spinning but there’s not much you can do about that. Haha.
Ya it needs a sure grip
@DeadDodgeGarage you should buy that 68 what a great find

That's one nice '68.
What a Super find! I like it!
I love this one ! I’ll admit, I’m an A body guy after owning a Cuda and a Coronet.
Wow. A really nice 70's 80's build. Put some tires on it and I like the stripe just the way it is. AC works.
Did I mention, Wow.
It’s just about good to go as is.
got to love the 1 wheelie peelies !!! just got done with my dads 1969 valiant 416cid sb ... great looking car btw love them old dodges!!!!!
MY FAVORITE CAR YOU'VE DONE VIDEO ABOUT SO FAR... MODERN MOTOR,6SPD.,RACING/AIR RIDE SUSPENSION, RIMS & TIRES.. 😁
But rip out the big block?!
Sounds great for it sitting for so long ! 👍🏻
Your channel really explains why MOPAR guys are MOPAR only guys
Because everything else is weird when you’ve stewed in just Mopars for a decade or three? Haha.
super jealous!!! one cool Plymouth
What a special car! Great video!
Very nice clean and simple car, in spite of the fancy options. It goes a long way to store a car indoors like this one was...
The first car I did a burnout in was a blue 4 door '68 Valiant 225 auto. The year was 1977 and I was 7 going on my first joyride around the block.
Oh wow. My daughter is 7, don’t think she can quite reach the pedals but we’re getting there. Haha.
Perfect car to do a V8 swap and they did a nice clean job! She needs a little more Tire on the back. Can't believe the air works! She's happy to be alive!
Oh yeah. More tire and a suregrip are definitely in the plan. It’s an awesome car!
Hey wow! You edited in a clear blue sky for me! Only for me I assume. Thank you Jamie the Great!
Oh, you are very welcome. Haha.
Sweet Valiant !! Yeah, I'm hot in tune with the stripes either.
Cheerz!!
Great point about no factory 383 in valiants
67 barracuda was an A- body same exact engine bay came factory 383
That's an awsome car fellas. Well done 👏
Awesome sounds coming from a stored beauty that’s been waking back up ❤
The dart/valiant is my favorite a body. That's the perfect car. Even if it's automatic.
It's looking pretty good, you sure got a lot done, good job!
What a neat find. Solid modifications. Only thing I'd change is to put in a posi diff, 3.23 or 3.55. The stripe is wrong: too bad it's painted on. Nice car, great presentation. I'm subscribing.
Finally!!! The bell worked. But the real question is biscuits and gravy or French toast 🤔
Why not both
@@p38kris I like where your heads at... Both it is!!!
Waffles.
@@staceyrenner5418 YES that too.
Man. As much as I love French toast, it's the B&G for me, all day. Or, my current love... the breakfast burrito.
What an awesome Valiant! And contrast to popular opinions from reading the comments, those stripes look great on that little beast!
I don’t hate it, it just doesn’t quite fit in my eyes. Wish it was straight up and down - I’d like that better.
Love the Valiant !!
When you get ready to sell it, I'm a buyer !!
It’s not mine… wish it was.
That thing sounds amazing
Absolutely love this car!
What a sweet sweet car! Long live the valiant! 😊👍
I had a 70 Valiant with the 225 slant 6. Bought it from an old lady with 38k miles on it back in 1984. Same color, but with a black painted top. Shoulda kept it!!
That one's a keeper for sure. Ah, to have unlimited funding in this life...
I did not find a dead Dodge in this video, but I will take the 30 day free subscriber special in hopes that there is one in the next video. Great video and a awesome car!
And what a deal it is! Most of the Dead Dodges are currently in my yard…
Nice! Watch out for intermittent problems with that orange ignition unit tho. Mine went bad. Best thing I ever did was replace it with a MSD unit. Faster off the line.
Oh… I’m well aware.
Love your other Valiant as well it has perfect patina, now you have the best of both worlds lol
Well I didn’t buy this one… I hope to some day
I just love this Car- cuz I love A-Bodies, and this isn't one you see every day -even back in the Day ! Oh man, it must be a blast to work at Rocket and see stuff come in every week that just blows your mind...
It’s ridiculously good fun. Still not sure how it’s a real job. I am happy as a pig in poop, or whatever it is they say
Awesome video! That cam lope is awesome! Mopar or no car!!😉☺️❤️
