BARN FIND! Will This 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner 440-6 Barrel Run After 32 Years?

  • On today's episode, we've got a really special one - this original black, 440 six barrel, Dana 60, Air Grabber equipped 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner is a bonafide muscle car. It was drag raced in the day, and then parked in a building in 1991 (you know, the year before I was born...) Tom Hergert (‪@rocketresto‬ ) recently bought it and brought it back to the Pacific Northwest. Our mission is to get it running again, after which it will find its way to a frame rack for some much needed repair. And if all that goes to plan, well, we'll just have to see about that whole six barrel thing...

    One of my favorite year Road Runners. My father bought one new back in 70. 383 three speed. Learned to drive in it back in 75. Thats where I caught the Mopar bug.

    Those lacy aluminum wheels on the front are probably "Appliance wheels" based on the name of the manufacturing company. I used to think they didn't fit the look of the car, but now I'm not so sure. I wonder if four came with the car. The wheels I'd put on would be the factory "Road Wheels" you see on the back. If possible, widened and converted to 15 inch. Or, you can't go wrong with Mopar Rallye wheels.

    If it's a factory TX9 car with the K4 burnt orange interior, that may be enough to make it a 1 of 1. The column shifted automatic and Air Grabber almost certainly do. It won't be cheap no matter what direction the owner decides to go, but it would be a shame to see anything but a factory correct resto IMO.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s the plan! It is indeed factory black with burnt orange interior. In the follow up video about reinstalling the six barrel setup, I show the fender tag (like I should have in this one.) Feel free to check that out! While we’re not necessarily concerned with the one-of-how-many this particular set of options may make this car, it’s definitely a rare combination and it will get the restoration it deserves sooner or later. For now? Fun!

      Really glad it has the HP manifolds and not headers. Really annoyed the pipes seem to have come from a 383 car and don’t fit. I really don’t remember. Somewhere in the vicinity of Minnesota.

      @DeadDodgeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      We did, and it is! I had every intention of showing the fender tag (which is present) but the day was just a real whirlwind of trying to get it together and that didn’t make the cut. Tom is a huge numbers guy, much more than I am. The codes aren’t as important to me as the cars, but it is super cool that this one was optioned the way that it was.

    • @rocketresto
      @rocketresto ปีที่แล้ว

      @lowbrass64 it’s my car and yes car has broadcast sheet, fender tag and the engine is numbers (it came with the car but motor in it right now is a 1969 440 HP). TX9 black, burnt orange interior, black vinyl top, hood performance treatment, stripe delete, 440 6 barrel, 4.10 Dana 60, 8 track radio, tach, air grabber, it’s pretty much the perfect Road Runner. Maybe a 4 speed would be better? Love this thing, next up is putting 6 pack back on it, fixing brakes, replacing water pump, lots more to do…but it drives!

  • @tomquinn607

    4:10 was standard gearing with the 440 6 barrel.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage

      According to Tom, that is incorrect, and the standard gear behind the 440-6 was still 3.23 open. I do not have extensive knowledge of these options.

    I guess just to make the video? It is kinda neat I guess to actually get it running and rolling even, especially under it's own power but I wouldn't have wasted the time (unless it's for content I guess). I would have been way too excited to start stripping the car down, boxing and labeling stuff so I could get epoxy sealer and paint on stuff. A lot of guys look at stuff like for more motivation and inspiration, but to me, it's just lost time doing a restoration.... but I kinda get it I guess.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      The owner (Tom) owns the restoration shop I work at, and has two or three other cars in line first. A big point I want to make with this channel is that exactly what you just described is a mistake for most people. If I didn’t work at a restoration shop, you would never see cars having that done on my channel. Stripping a car down for a complete restoration is not something that the average car guy should attempt. It’s a really good way to end up stalled on a project, with it buried under boxes in your garage, until some dickhead like me comes along and buys it in twenty years. This car was in the process of a simple drivetrain replacement, and that stalled it as a project for 32 years.
      If doing that is in your means, awesome! And I really mean that. But I will never tell the average car guy that he should attempt a restoration at home. Been there, tried that. Don’t do it. Now, making them run and drivable on the other hand? That’s an achievable goal. It’s huge for the car. Suddenly it’s not a table anymore. It’s hugely rewarding, it takes comparatively very little time, and above all? It’s fun. Tom and I share that vision - this was a thrash, but god damn it was a lot of fun. That’s what I am here to do - have my kind of fun, and *maybe* teach people something along the way. If fun seems like a waste of time to you, I can’t help there.

    • @Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism
      @Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DeadDodgeGarage It will always just be old beater if you don't do it though. A lot of guys look for instant gratification I guess. To me, it's all about the journey, not the destination.
      I had no problem with tearing my car down and restoring it, so I guess I just can't relate to that.
      In your case, you got to have fun while making content (working for money) so you wasted nothing, personally. I watched it all just the same too. Cool car. She deserves a restoration.
      And oh yes, I agree, most people can't restore cars. Most classic car owners shouldn't even mess with them for that matter. I had two previous owners of my classic where I had to undo their shoddy trash before I could restore it correctly. Their frigging just cost me more time and I didn't build no trailer queen either.

    Oil and filter brand does not matter for most everyday average vehicles..yes in a Ferrari or McLaren etc get the best you can buy...but most vehicles it's more important to follow the change interval and use proper viscosity, synthetic or synthetic blend or conventional and a filter designed for the type of base oil your using like Fram has gold silver and orange..yes Fram and supertech are probably lower grade quality but in an older chevy 350 it really isn't going to hurt it..and yes you could run synthetic in it but unnecessary money for shorter change intervals..but new cars with vvti you have to run proper weight for climate and yes synthetic is important when cold starts on vvti need that oil right now asap.

    • @Boga217
      @Boga217 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DeadDodgeGarage no I'm quite familiar. I have a 1995 350. I use it every couple oil changes. If your point is add packs then yes there is quite a few out there and of course on an older vehicle those are things to be aware of. My post was about oil and filters in general due to the valvoline Fram comment...I was just saying nothing really wrong with using the stuff. And technically if cam was broke in with proper zddp as long as the oil has some it should be fine in a daily driver type situation. BTW a good oil for decent zddp amounts and a bit higher burn off temperature is stp oil. On autozone in the description they tell you quite a bit about the oil..but try to avoid the parts there 😄
