    Last year, I planted anemones for the first time, and not a single one of them came up. I didn't know about soaking the corms (or whatever they're called) first before planting, so thanks for that information, and you're so right about them being odd-looking little lumps. I may have to plant them again next fall. All of my tulips and most of the daffodils (I have a dozen left to go into the ground) are planted, hopefully, I gave them enough room to naturalize.

      Malin Skillby, do they make a good cut flower to use in vases?

    • @malins4573
      @malins4573 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@karenm5681 They don't last that long indoors, maybe a day or a few days. The stems are really skinny, so they easily flop when indoors, and the leaves are placed akwardly halfway up the stem, so they are bulky in the middle and floppy at the top. :) The arrangement always looks a little wild. But you may have a better hand with them than I do. They do last ages in the garden, though.

    • @karenm5681
      @karenm5681 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Malin. Your answer helps me to know that I should not buy these particular flowers, lovely as they are, because I'm starting a business selling cut flowers that I'll grow in 2021 on our city lot. I have a tendency to want to grow all the things and even with garden places on all 4 sides of our home, there actually is a limit to the space I can grow things in. I'm learning how to make wiser choices through some trial & error...not every flower can "make the cut".😂

    So exciting to be able to do Tulips, safe from the deer! I planted anemone blanda last year in a pot, from a native mix, they were so sweet- super successful here in zone 8b. I am in southern Ont (Canada) zone 6b... I have tried anemone blanda a few times, with low/no success. I have heard others in my zone have better luck with the little turds. I am eager to see your results and I might try again :) I usually stick to daffodils and allium due to our high rabbit population, I am trying to camoflauge my tulips under garlic and alliums this year... we will see. I have a big swath of camissia and alliums in my garden that makes a nice tall bold statement. Since the allium do not naturalize, I would love to add a few more... I need your flags to mark the open spots in the spring so I can plant them up in the fall without damaging my in ground bulbs. Thanks for the great video, you def looked cold by the end!

    Just finished our bulb planting for this year. Our colors are pink, white and yellow this year. We only did 150 daffs, 30 tulips, about 15 chionodoxa (an experiment). I love the flag method of marking. Although my yard looks like the utility locator came through (well actually my husband is one of those) now I know where everything will come up. I took pictures and then pulled the flags after planting bulbs. So looking forward to your display in spring. Love pink and white combo. Thanks for the inspiration. 🍂😃🍂

    It is difficult to see which way is right way up for the anemone bulbs. I use touch instead of sight. Run your finger along it....one side is knobbly, the other side is smooth to the touch. The smooth side should face down, the knobbly side should face up.

New for me this year is Fritillaria Persica, the tall dark and handsome one and white Squill mixed with my short muscari. You looked so cold, hope you get some warm weather to finish planting. 2 years ago I planted 300 tulips and daffodils and not a single one came up. While digging around in spring I noticed a lot of rotted bulbs so I assume that they all rotted. Last year I added fertilizer and a healthily dose of coarse sand at the bottom of the planting holes and had a Stella show in spring. Just thought I’d share with the folks out there that may be having similar issues. This year it’s tons of Aveyron tulips.

    I have always been disappointed with trying to find a cosmos that is actually short. This last season I broke down and tried yet another short white, Cosmos 'Little Princess'. While it was not as vigorous as I would have liked (I guess I would plant many closer together.), it was bushy and short, just 20" here in central WI. The closeness of the flowers when blooming actually looks like the seed packet pic.

    Hahaha! Those anemone have a mind of their own! I've planted hundreds of blue, white and pink ones over the years in my zone 5b. Only the blue survive long term, and they really prefer the adjacent lawn over the tree ring. They naturalize in the lawn. However, I can recommend squill. A carpet of blue in your lawn in early spring, grass like foliage that fades away and then you mow them.

    I can't wait to see all these beautiful flowers bloom. This is my first year gardening. I've never planted bulbs before, but I'm definitely going to. I've ordered a bunch of bulbs (as if I know what to do with them). I was told that the bulbs will be shipped accordingly based on my zone, which is 10b. I'm excited and nervous.

    I love these ideas! I can’t wait to see the results in the spring. I was just looking at the anemones yesterday and you have convinced me.

    Here in grow zone 7b we plant out in the fall but only go 2 inches down, they love the sun, but soon disappear when the warm weather hits.. They are rock stars in the garden. Many varieties to choose from. Lovely flowers.

    I planted some purple anemonies in zone 6 . Every year less and less come back, I think did not pick the right variety for my climate. For tulips I try to combine similar varieties with different bloom time to make it look like it blooms for long time.

    Can't wait to see your spring flower show! Your expression was priceless at around 13:32🤣 That's me every time I have to measure anything. Good tip about fertilizing bulbs the second year too!

    It will be lovely. I tried 3 new ones this year. Trout lilies, winter wolfs bane and Virginia blue bells. The blue bells are in a shady more natural area.

    Can’t wait to see the show in spring. You have inspired me to plan for a specific area next year. Gardens down, leaf pick up done and lawn got last mow for season. Gorgeous weather weekend here in Southern Ontario Canada 💝🇨🇦. Have a great day.

    I grew some of those 2 years ago from the funny looking "corms" I liked them, but they weren't big, bold or showy, Very small and delicate.

    Cant wait to see those Anemones in the future! I never knew there were bulb varieties. I have Japanese Anemones they are pink and i love how quickly they spread! Those tulips will be beautiful! I love the white ones. I planted purple and white tulips and variegated white and purple ones. I also planted white and coral daffodils this fall aswell! Love your vids, take care!

    Erin, I have the White Splendor but I didn't soak mine; in Portland and we get enough rain, no problems. Planted in mostly sun, they are very beautiful. Have more going out this season, need to get them in the ground.

    I, too, live in SE WI (Racine) and deal with deer. We just (last season) put up a fence around the garden, so am looking forward to eating more of my produce this year. When we first moved here, I learned the hard way that deer like tulips and have just grown daffodils instead, but LOVE the idea of planting them inside my vegetable garden! Thank you for your realistic approach to gardening , your willingness to try new things and your creativity. I really enjoy your videos.

    Good for you planting your blanda anemones as soon as they are ready. I purchased them this year too, soaked them overnight, and then got busy so I couldn't plant them for a few days. BIG mistake. They got moldy and I had to toss them. I was heartbroken. I spent so much on them I didn't feel good about purchasing them again. They are on my list for next year though. Love the tulips. I deal with deer, squirrels and chipmunks here so I am sticking with species tulips. I loaded the soil with cayenne as well, while planting just in case. Did your species tulips come back every year or were they still annuals for you?
