For fertilizing: I bought six 2 gallon watering cans from the blue store for under $5 each. I fill them all up and load them into my gorilla cart then wheel them around and it’s SO much faster than fill, empty, fill, empty, fill, empty. Game changer.
Such a great video! You are absolutely one of the most likeable people on youtube and such pleasure to learn from. Love your channel and your garden. I smiled through the whole video. Thank you Erin!
This is my favorite video you've done in a while - so informative, honest, and funny. I love all your videos, and your approach to gardening, but this one I will refer back to multiple times. Thank you for all of this!
I am guilty of never putting my hose back up either. We looked at our house on Google Earth and sure enough, the hose was on the ground in the front yard.
"The best way to find your old sprinkler is to buy a new one." Hahaha! It's why I have 3. And I love how genuine and real your videos are, Erin. Keep them coming.
I just bought a Hose Link retractable hose. Saves my back and so easy. You can attach a wand or any other attachments. Best part is easy stop & go. Love it!!!
Am glad we aren't the only ones who have passionate "discussions" over hoses. He hates my hoses and I argue that I am the one doing the watering so I get to pick the hose I enjoy using.
My 85 gallon barrel is now being used as a 'diverter' - leaving the hose at the bottom open at all times, routing the water to a slightly high spot in my nearby border that experiences rainwater runoff instead of soaking in. Works like a charm to keep more rain passing to that high spot and to keep the barrel from overflowing into its surrounding area during rains. 85 gallons is not much water during dry times, which is when I need it. Would I have bought one had I known? Well... it DOES make a fine diverter. 😉
SO glad you gave us your opinion of the Orbit timer. I never figured how mine worked so it is in the attic and I use the oven timer to remind me to turn off the water! Also, I still love hand-watering - it is the adult's excuse to play in the water during hot weather. I loved watching you 'quick-disconnect' the quick-connect fitting. You are so much fun!
June & Erin - I use 2 of those Orbit 4 zone timers. The logic was very different from the timers I used before, but I eventually got the hang of it and I LOVE them now. Wish there was a way I could help you gals! I’ve had good luck with Orbit customer service...maybe they have a video??
I live in an OLD house with no outside water source. Yep, I carry my 2 gallon watering can many many times to water my veggies and flowers. I look at it as the exercise the plants are giving me. All a matter of perception.
Thank you so much for that PVC pipe tip with the drip tubing, it solves the issues I've had with drip perfectly! There is a trick to using the quick connectors, you need to push it together first like your pushing it on, while you are pushing you pull the little sliding lock piece back and it comes out super easy. If you don't push it together before you pull it apart it is way harder and gets stuck. Also for coiling the hose you just twist it, always the same directions and it will coil itself smoothly, then when you pull it out you have to twist the opposite way to keep it straight. You learn fast watering at a garden centre all day, I can coil a long hose in probably 30 seconds. Last tip, for the timer if you don't want to go for an expensive wireless one, there are ones with a removable control panel so you can just unplug, program and you're good to go without sitting on the ground.
Such a GREAT video, Erin. I could watch you all day! Please send Odin my thanks for his in depth review. He forgot to review 'ease of slobber removal' !!!!
Love your video. Hubby took the end off our watering jug and off the end of our watering wand works great. He also ran our heavy hose from the side of our house down our fence line and out to my garden edge in the middle of our yard. He collected it to another hose attached to a wooden post and hanger. We have shutoff at both locations, love the setup. Thanks for all the information and the laughs. 👍❤️😊
I love all your videos but this is my new favorite 😄 I spend more time talking watering to my clients than anything else and it was good to see you delve into the essentials. My experience with trying the ‘twist’ wind up is it only works with short hoses with no nozzle gun to clunk around. Sometimes I just tuck the hose neatly along the edge of the bed. It’s just a hose not underwear 😉 So glad I found your videos!
Oooo, helpful! The on/off at the individual garden beds is genius. Thanks Erin. I appreciate your mentioning the dissatisfaction of things you have going on, and why. Most helpful. The hose info is also very valuable for me, at this point. In zone 9b near Tucson, Az 🌵🌵🌵🐝🐝🐞
We buried a master hose in pvc tubing out to the gardens and put a double headed spicket on the end anchored to a metal stake. Now I can get to where I need to go with much shorter hoses to drag around and nothing ugly by the house. Hubs blows the buried hose out with his air compressor when I turn everything off for winter.
I, too, was fed up with the hose issue. I bought a hose stand at Lowes that looks like wrought iron and is very attractive in the garden; just push it in the ground. Along with my expanding flex hose, I found by using a hose stand I don't have the frustrating hose issues anymore. I love your channel!!
You are so real!! You crack me up and I love that. I found this video very informative, thank you! Agree, "easiest way to find the old sprinkler is but a new spinkler." Have done that many a time and then you find the old ones and end up with a collection of sprinklers! Great review Odin!
I look so forward to your videos Erin! You crack me up with your humor and I love when you include the dogs. I can so relate to your gardening tips and I have gleaned a lot from you. Thanks especially for sharing the things that don't always work out. Makes me know I can move on past mine! Wish I had some better ideas for watering but the dragging of the hose continues over here in SW Michigan. Going on two weeks without rain. Argh!
Have you thought of using a Hoselink reel? I heard about it from Laura on Garden Answer. I love mine! It retracts and rolls up so easily. If you think it’s too bulky for the front of the house, maybe you could use a longer leader hose to move it further. I just started watching your channel so I don’t have a mental picture of your house to know if that would work. They also sell Hoselink covers if you want to make it look prettier.
Too funny...love when you keeps it real Erin! Ha! As much as I see the efficiency of drip, there is just something about manually watering selective plants....that provides satisfaction LOL. The only problem is scheduling the time. Great VID!
In an effort to conserve water, my kids and I made a bunch of DIY ollas out of unglazed terra cotta pots and placed them all over the garden. This self-watering system has saved us both time and water. I will have to look into rain barrels next... Thanks for the suggestion!
OK, I’m convinced. I need to get a Dram with the thumb control. By the way love seeing Oden and appreciate his review of the nozzle. We have a Newfie in the family, and she’s so sweet and smart, and laid-back. My Sheltie is the energetic one. Ha ha
Watched the video while drinking my morning tea...loved the video! Your hose snafu almost made me do an old time comedic 'spit take'! My hose quick connect works easiest when there is no water pressure (which I think you found out the hard way). Many cities don't allow or discourage rain barrels because of mosquito problems. I solve this by just adding a mosquito dunk.
Erin, I can relate. "I'm a terrible hose coiler, in fact, I never do it", yep, that's me! I also totally agree with you about buying a new sprinkler, "The easiest way to find the old sprinkler, is to buy a new sprinkler". I have discovered, that the quickest way to find most things, is to buy new ones! The searched-for item then magically appears, 'out of nowhere'! Which is similar to how it originally disappeared, 'into thin air'! Lol, I loved this video, and Odin's water review was so cute! ~Margie
I use the fabric type hose (not the shrivel up type) from Costco. It is light weight and hardly kinks(folds). I drag that 100 foot hose out fully extended twice a day and both times I loop it up on the corner of a chair. It is super easy to loop it up and extremely easy to pull out. I'm on my 2nd year and it has held up to a LOT of wear. It gets it's workout in our 100+ weather and lots of use.
Thanks for putting together this great information. I understand about heavy hoses that don’t kink. That’s all we have. (4) one is for extension purposes. I have to say that we haven’t had to buy a hose in 18 yrs. can’t say the same for nozzles. Until I found out about Dramm products. Love their easy thumb control on off. We use a hand nozzle, a 15 inch wand and we have a 30 inch wand. Love all three. Next on wish list are quick connect and rain barrel. Thanks again for sharing. 🌸😊🌸
Erin, at some point I need to share a bottle of wine with you! I’m soaked after I finish watering....OMG drives me crazy. Best watering tool is having my husband or boys do it. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks for this informative video. With a heat wave we have and will probably still have into next week , I am watering a lot these days.I live in Canada and I use the Gardenia series for quick connect and other watering accessories. When you think of the physics, it is easier to turn the water off and spray out the excess water so there is not too much residual pressure in the hose , and then disconnect the watering accessory and reconnect another . I just found it was easier that way. The watering wand was a game changer for me as I only purchased my first one this year!
We have a very similar set up. We only have one outside spigot. Split it off via HD hose to “create” a spigot on the front corner of house. Split that spigot off 150’ with another buried HD hose to create another spigot at the far end of the property. I use DIG systems. Very versatile but I’m starting to hate all the different drippers and sprayers. Impossible to figure out how to regulate how much to water all the different plants. Ain’t got time for that! I control zones with in line valves and timers. Thinking of switch to all drip/weeper hose. Still a bit complicated but better than dragging sprinklers around.
I have the same watering wand and I love it. Watering my pots on my porch is so easy and less messy with the thumb control. I’m a fan of the flexible hoses in black because they are lighter and I can’t lift the heavier hoses.
Just started watching your channel a few days ago and really enjoying it! Great video today. I experimented with drip and ebb and flow hydroponics a few years ago (pre-divorce and into an apartment for a few years). Now I am finally into a house with a good sized yard which I will be turning into a large garden with a set of 6 raised beds. I'm looking at connecting the outside water to a drip system for the raised beds and some of what you have done by burying the line in PVC for protection is something I didn't even think about doing, but I will now. I have also been looking at adding a couple of rain barrels at two corners of the house to provide a good portion of the water to the in ground garden, but that won't happen until next year as I am working on a pretty meager budget and doing renovations in the house as well. Apparently I wanted to keep very busy!
Love watching you! I've learned so much and I just love your personality! Look into the Zero brand hoses. They are so light weight, rarely kink and are incredibly durable. You will never have a problem coiling again. They even come in 100' lengths.
I only purchase nozzles that have different settings for the spray. Flexzilla hoses (on sale) are the best, no kinks, heavy duty.my favourite hose reel articulates away from the house, it looks pretty and is fairly low profile. It was a splurge and I’ve never been able to find another one. Drip tubing on a timer is a life saver.
Loving all the choices you've shared as better & best. Really like the quick connect that shuts the hose off. My experience with disconnecting other brands is if you push the wand inward to the disconnect it pulls back easier. Definitely going to try out a few of these choices.💦🌿
Sitting down to think about my irrigation system this year. Spent the winter planning for a bunch of new plants and it will all need water. It was great to have this to review. The veggie garden set up to get your water there was helpful as was all the other tips! Thank you!!
Thanks for sharing your experience, I enjoy watering the garden, if I have the time, as it gives me an opportunity to really see what is going on in the garden
Enjoyed this video. I found myself nodding to everything you were saying. My husband put in two rain water barrels for us. He made them both. I took pictures to send you but , I’m unsure how to send them to you. We have a water softener system that just dried out our plants so much, I said it’s time to collect rain water. I’m seeing such an improvement in ours plants since applying the rain water. Soil seems better and the plants seem happy. Thanks for sharing this video. PS I dislike the winding up of hoses also...such a pain! Lol
I'm really starting to realize that plant watering is an actual science in and of itself. And I most definitely dread watering in summer here in zone 9b. It's literally death to be out in the day
Also, I bought a beautiful giant concrete planter off Facebook marketplace, I just throw my hose into it. It doesn’t move and it’s pretty (it even has moss growing on it!). Sure you can see the hose if you walk up to it but it is tucked into my hydrangeas so you have to be super close to see inside.
I finally bought a hose and water wand this year. I got a dramn wand and a gilmour medium duty hose. I was filling a water can in my bath tub last year and that was not cutting it.
I have 2 barrels provided by the city. Most days, I pray...for rain! Tried all types of sprinklers attached to hoses. No luck. City just imposed new regulations for sprinklers. Costly. So I will be hand watering henceforth. Put in a timer from Orbit. Works. Have 2 different size bed plots on an 8' x 12'. Working on the math to get each watered from barrels. Need an external pump and can't find. Off to watch your dahlias video.
Awesome video Erin! I laughed the whole time because I have all the same issues with hoses, quick disconnects, sprinklers etc. I have not found a hose reel solution either for the front of my house. I finally gave into my husband and son and let them install a wall mounted reel right in front so it would make it easier for the sprinkler and washing the car. It kind of blends in.
I was so happy I got content from you today, even if it was you struggling with a hose connect LOL and amen about the hose colors. I am terribly lazy with wrapping them up.
Erin, I work for a gardening buyer in Canada and I know Ames has some lovely decorative hose reels/carts if you want to check them out. Love that you use a variety of watering tools (Dramm, Orbit etc). FYI - Melnor makes water timers as well and we have found that our customers prefer them to Orbit.
Sure glad to I know I'm not the only one with water hose woes. The coiling the kinking, getting twisted. I have the non-kinking kind and yes, they are hard to coil. I've had the never kink hoses from Lowes for years. I leave the hoses reels out year round. Must have had them for 15 years. I will say the ones on reels don't get twisted.
Hey Erin i have 2 x 2500 Litre water tanks and i am planning on putting another two in this summer, rain water is precious and plant do so much better with it. As always a great video thanks.
I too am guilty of leaving them out, however I choose a bright color so whom ever is mowing the lawn they can see it and doesn't run over my expensive hoses. We have some attractive and self retracting hose boxes, I have had for years, just not quite long enough for our yard unfortunately, I need 150 feet and truthfully use the golf cart to pull it out that far. Also like my DRAMS equally. I prefer the Haws large water cans as I can haul 2 of them at a time comfortably. Thank you for sharing and great content. Oden is pretty cool too!
There are shut off valves you can buy that are great. I found the Gilmour connectors difficult to work with although they had the shut off option..the dramm are much much easier and don't leak..I use them with a shut off valve ...works great!
My husband and I copied the 4x4 post that Laura has on Garden Answer. Theirs also has a spigot directly mounted, I'm assuming to get water to the far away places from the house. We ordered an inexpensive ($30 ) small metal holder from amazon and screwed that onto the post. I know it is at the front of your house but you could stain the post white to match the house. We put a cap on it($5) as Laura did which makes it look a little classier. Basically, I froze the video where you can see her hose handler posts and then told my husband we had to make it! It holds our 100 ft heavy hose very well. Great video- I also found drip irrigation to be intimidating but I am loving it now.
Your veg garden watering system sounds like ours. The garden is about 500 ft from the house. Multiple hoses are hooked to a timer by the house. Part of the system is black pipe We picked the hoses up the first couple years but decided it wasn't worth our time to keep doing that. We just buy extra hose, if needed, when they're on sale to replaced damaged ones that electrical tape won't fix. The garden has just one impulse sprinkler on a pipe so the garden is in a circle.
We use the Zero G hoses. I like them, but as you say they are an ugly color, bright blue. Hubby doesn’t like the aluminum fittings on them as they can get bent and leak. I also hate the Orbit timers. I like Gilmour but prefer the Melnor ones. We have ordered the drip irrigation for our veg garden and will install next week, and like you we ordered a kit and will figure it out as we go along. 🤷♀️ it’s all a learning process but I’m excited to think of the possibility of actually leaving the garden for a few days! 😝
I know you said you don't like stand out colors but the flexilla swivelgrip hose is so good. I've had it for 3 years and in love. It's bright neon green so you will hate it like that timer! I absolutely love your approach on things...you crack me up. Thank you for the knowledge. 😆
A garden hose in one hand and a cocktail in the other doesn’t sound like any improvements are needed, Erin! Seriously though, I’m married to Mr. I’m Not Having It, so my dream is a drip irrigation set up. I have drip tube envy.
Oh Erin, you are so my people. That whole connecter scenario would be me, well, I’d have spewed a few choice words. I have the Dramm shower wand and it’s been bugging me. It doesn’t always shower. Sometime I have to turn it off and on a couple of times to get a soft, even flow. I have removed the head and there isn’t any blockage so I don’t know what the deal is. And it doesn’t always shut off completely. I love my retractable hose reel I have out back. I have a hand crank one out front and right now it’s laying out in the yard.
If I were going to run a drip system it would be a lead hose (run through a buried in PVC pipe ) to hoses in the garden and hand turn it on. No issue with timers and no having to keep winding hoses . Run when I'm outside in the morning drinking coffee or in evening relaxing.
Great vid. I too am looking for a nice way to store the hose in the front of the house. As it is- It's a horrid kinking hose that sits in bed semi coiled. I keep waiting for it to die. Friend gave it to me when I moved in because she hated it for kinking 8 yrs ago.
Great great tips! I have an inground irrigation system. I traveled for my job for many years and so most of my plants suffered immensely. I invested in a Rain Bird smart system. It is wonderful. Can access it from anywhere and program as needed. I don’t know if there is one that could be used in your vegetable garden, as it does need WiFi. But I can say that it is so easy to program. My previous one was not. You did this video a year or so ago so maybe you have found an answer. But your system is brilliant in my opinion!
This was a great video. I thought at the end, you were going to say, you can hold the hose in one hand, and inspect and pull weeds with the other, but low and behold, you said 'cocktail' ... LOVE it lol Will have to try that one day. I to leave my hose laying about
Hello, I purchased a Bionic Steel hose last year and love it! 👍. Light weight, easy to push around and stores no problem (I actually just toss it Willy nilly in a bucket in my garage) and it never kinks! But I think it only comes in the silver color. 😞
I sure can relate on the hose issues!! I currently am using the light weight stainless which I love but, they don’t hold up with a lot of use, I have to use a 100foot hose to reach all my plants and shrubs, and have had to replace two in two years.. I love the rain barrel idea and have been considering getting one or two but was wondering how to efficiently use them to water plants, you confirmed a few of my concerns with those. It would be great to have some kind of pump with sprayer connected to those barrels...thanks for this video!!
I've tried so many hoses over the nearly 30 years I've been gardening. I totally understand what you mean about coiling them. I have a hook, looks like a short shepherd's hook, I got from Gardeners Supply decades ago. They still sell it! I also have an enormous Terra Cotta pot from the old Smith & Hawkins. But last year I got a metal hose at Menards that I love. Your husband wouldn't like it. It's smaller diameter, maybe 1/2" and it is like conduit so it's easy to gather and coil, and it never kinks. It's only 50' so I may have to invest in another one to connect them to reach all areas of my yard. It came with a twist nozzle that I could live without. It is not drinking water safe. Other than that, I do love it.
Love Orin’s hose review! 😆 here in Oregon we can’t collect rain water in a rain barrel (at least the city where my parents live they can’t. Not sure if it’s by city or state ordinance) but that would be a great method to use since it rains a lot here in the Willamette Valley.
Dang, just another example of the fascist state of Oregon! I can see some authority over the water pumped out of the ground, maybe, but no one should have the right to tell you what to do with the water God sends down from the sky onto your roof! That's a ridiculous overreach of authority.
I really like the hoselink. If you don't want it where your spicket is you could run a hose from spicket to the location that you attach the hose link. I have had if for a year and so far it continues to wind itself pretty well. I will cry on the day that I screw that up!
I found the drip tubing to be difficult also. Trying to figure it out made me cry. I've looked online, I looked on TH-cam for videos, I called Rainbird to see if they had any more recent videos other than 6 years ago --- 10 years ago and for some reason they do not!! at least they didn't this past spring. I finally just had to wing it and figure it out myself. Glad to hear I'm not the only one. 😊
SANDY BELLOMY I agree, Rainbird needs to “up their game” in the TH-cam department. I do NOT find their residential videos to be much help at all. The first thing they could do is organize a few playlists and sort the videos by language!
For fertilizing: I bought six 2 gallon watering cans from the blue store for under $5 each. I fill them all up and load them into my gorilla cart then wheel them around and it’s SO much faster than fill, empty, fill, empty, fill, empty. Game changer.

This is an EXCELLENT idea! Thanks for sharing it with us.
what is a blue store?
@@dianascott2798 Well there's the orange store and there's the blue store =) Lowe's and HD.
Lyla Thomas ~ wow under $5. I was just there. I need to go back. Just bought the watering wand at the blue store. One of my favorite stores
I love that you didn’t edit out the hose snafu! 😂 I laughed right out loud with you!

Who are you? Your comment was so cute!
@@themontephone875 Just a messy fan!
Hahahahaha! That's so funny! And I can definitely relate! Hate putting the hose away! =D
Guilty! Hate the fighting with the hose to water and then put it back.
Lol @ it being on google...I try to put back hose everytime just because I'm OCD.

~Margie
Thanks for my first laugh of the morning! I have a lot of trouble with leaky connectors, also. I feel your pain.
It's so true that you will definitely find what you're looking for once you buy a new one.😆 I love Odin's review!😊💗
The same problem with hose coiling all over the world 😂.
Greetings from Germany
Thanks for this informative video. With a heat wave we have and will probably still have into next week , I am watering a lot these days.I live in Canada and I use the Gardenia series for quick connect and other watering accessories. When you think of the physics, it is easier to turn the water off and spray out the excess water so there is not too much residual pressure in the hose , and then disconnect the watering accessory and reconnect another . I just found it was easier that way. The watering wand was a game changer for me as I only purchased my first one this year!
“The easiest way to find the old sprinkler is to buy a new sprinkler” 😂
Had to laugh out loud, boy, how true is that!
That made me laugh, too! My way of thinking. Erin probably doesn’t realize how funny she is!
Excellent watering overview. Glad to learn about the quick-release fittings & the water wand, ordered them to be ready if it gets done snowing
Thank you Erin , I agree that Dramm is great. I was looking at timers today so your video was very helpful! Thanks as always for sharing!
Great review from Odin!!! 👍❤️
I love your honesty & real life gardening attitude. No fakeness here!!
Lol
My hose is always laying across our backyard... loved the video! Thank you for sharing 😘
I'm really starting to realize that plant watering is an actual science in and of itself. And I most definitely dread watering in summer here in zone 9b. It's literally death to be out in the day
I would say that your watering problems are no more. I absolutely adore your Newfoundlands they are beautiful and smart dog breed.
Genius!
I finally bought a hose and water wand this year. I got a dramn wand and a gilmour medium duty hose. I was filling a water can in my bath tub last year and that was not cutting it.
Cocktail in one hand....yes! And my dog does the same thing. So glad I found you!
Thanks so much for this, Sharon!
Love your videos and your personality!
Thank you. I am new to my place and have not figured out how the watering will go next spring and summer.
Very enjoyable video. I’m definitely gonna get the part that shuts off the water when you want to add an attachment. Thanks!
Yep. Nothing works when the camera rolls... I just got my brass quick-connectors and had to laugh. You Rock!! ❤💙💚😎
Great topic! Hoses are my garden nightmare!
You mentioned about how to store rain water, P Allen Smith has a 3000 gallon under ground stored he collects off of his buildings
I’ve noticed how much different plants respond to rain water versus spigot fed water! It’s crazy.
Kate Dorman I thought I was married to that guy… LOL
Oh Erin, you are so my people. That whole connecter scenario would be me, well, I’d have spewed a few choice words. I have the Dramm shower wand and it’s been bugging me. It doesn’t always shower. Sometime I have to turn it off and on a couple of times to get a soft, even flow. I have removed the head and there isn’t any blockage so I don’t know what the deal is. And it doesn’t always shut off completely. I love my retractable hose reel I have out back. I have a hand crank one out front and right now it’s laying out in the yard.
Maybe call the Dramm company? Good luck.
One of your best videos. Very informative and good to see your perspective on best and not so good supplies. Thanks!
Before I even watch, I had to laugh. I LOVE my water right hoses and I have that exact dramm wand. 🙌👍
Mr MuchMorePatient had me rolling!
Thanks, Erin! Sooo funny! Love that you don’t edit yourself! A pretty new watcher. Learning so much! Very grateful.
Great info! Watering will never be the same😂 you are a delight and a super gardener.🌿🌲
Actually, Oregon changed that. You can catch water off your roof.
I also like the Dram hose attachments.
Thank you for being honest about not liking to coil. I LOL because I do that too!
Lol, loved Odin's water review!!!!
You are so great wonderful sence of humor !! I watch you all the time beautiful gardens
We share similar watering issues. Thanks for sharing. Always searching.
