Animator here, watching this during my own production meltdown. The industry is really trying to squeeze a lot out of animators, having to draw characters without proper settei is something I've done for the passed 3 productions or so, high or low profile. It still shocks me how little common sense is applied when it comes to producing anime, big productions will still be green lit knowing well that having extra time, even an extra month, could massively change the output. This is most likely a combination of committees and the docile nature of the Japanese mixed with an industry trying to not train new animators (contract scalping is a thing). Production issues are becoming a standard but I'd like to think it's just my situation. I also cringed hearing someone still use the word sakuga, rarely hear it from people within the industry.
My god I genuinely wish your channel would be more well-known and this specific video get million views. People need to know about anime production, they need to know how hard the artists have to suffer therefore respect and be satisfied with what they fortunately get from these artists. As a animation lover, I will never stop defending for the artist I love and try my best to explain to the casual viewers how much effort does it take to produce a single piece of animation that they're considering bad or mid or any rude shit they can come up with.
If that helps with the fact that this took 6 months, you cooked pretty well. I think the approach was good as well with explaining concepts like staff overlap and scheduling in accessible fashion. The intro caught my attention immediately lol, for some reason the sound effects and visual emulation of an old camera are very pleasing to me. I sometimes find it interesting to compare MAPPA to let's say, Aniplex and A-1 Pictures. Because MAPPA at least manages to finish their shows on time, while Aniplex got infamous with the delays and their covid excuses lol. And Aniplex' low can be really low as well, like with what I saw of the SAO Progressive "movies". But they still seem to burn less bridges in the long run, as JJK really was the first time where animators openly decided to break contractual obligations just to shit on the production and announce they don't intend to work with the studio again. Speaking about Aniplex, I find it worrying that Umehara handles Bocchi the Rock, Dress Up Darling AND Elusive Samurai as AP. It's a good overview of the interesting things to highlight regarding the production. Now we're waiting for some announcements regarding the Chainsaw Man movie, like wtf is going on over there?
Thanks! As for the opening, I tried to emulate Gosso's board from the first and last episode; the "found footage" segment and the "screen shutting off" respectively. As for MAPPA Vs Aniplex, I think the main difference here is simply who's incharge- the creatives or executives. Aniplex is a production company, not a creative one; these 2 are not mutually exclusive but in the case of Aniplex they don't really have a studio of artists of their own. When they abuse the contracted studios at A-1 pictures, cloverworks etc, the staff don't speak out cause the studio is not at fault. It's unfortunately the norm for the giant evil corporate company to be evil. It's the reason KyoAni works only on their own terms even though they could make mad bank with contractual offers. It's just sad seeing really promising studios like DogaKobo unable to capitalize on a brand and get acquired by giant companies like Kadokawa. The result? Oshi no Ko S2 and Alya hides her feelings in Russian airing in the same season. Coming to MAPPA, I don't think there would have been such a huge ruckus if the executives were fucking up again, since that's the industry norm. But in this case it's the studio itself; the "creative" head causing the problems. He's established a successful and profitable brand that most studios could only dream of, makes bold claims about turning his studio into the next KyoAni, and then proceeds to completely fuck up. It's infuriating.

I really hope this video reaches the artists because it's the best tribute you can pay. Of course for us normies is pure gold, even after having heard you speak about the production conditions in the individual videos, this adds a lot of information, always entertaining. I need to mention the awesome analysis you made of ep2, shellfish me wanting you to expand your content on manga/anime comparison and other aspects in further videos(don't listen, you've got enough in your plate). Huge thanks for your crazy work in this video Mr Manks.
absolutely incredible video, my first time seeing your channel! I need to see the backlog of videos because both this and the CSM production hell were so insightful and well informed, I had no idea this type of production mismanagement was happening with these big shows. Can't wait to see more!
Scrolling through the chapter list for the video-I like how you can notice the passage of time based on how thick your facial hair gets lol. Just a fun detail.
17 Minutes into the video, my takeaway so far is that official anime productions are objectively corporate nightmares that prevent art from reaching its full potential so I'll make sure to stop supporting any of them and animate MY story on MY terms even if it takes the rest of my life. The staff need to stop tolerating this, the audience needs to stop buying it, otherwise nothing will change.
Mr. Manko, what is your estimated guess about the CSM movie -> JJK S3 schedule? The csm movie has been incognito for almost a year, but I've heard that the production has had some problems along the way. Also considering the fact that JJK might also have a 1,5 year gap between S2 and 3, do you think that there's a chance that the CSM movie releases AFTER JJK, because how do they want to release a CSM movie and JJK S3 in under half a year? I could see CSM's release date being around March/April so there's no way that JJK S3 will release until like October at the earliest.
There are changes in management, I'm a little hopeful for the future. Shuhhei Yabuta (Vinland Director) became one of the board members. Hiroya Hasegawa (Vinland AniP) became Vice President. Makoto Kimura (former head of planning) left the studio. Otsuka is still at the healm, he's kinda crazy but not an evil moustache twirling villain. And one thing I like about him is that he is investing in the projects. MAPPA is one of the rare studios who regularly appears in the Production committee of the animes they make. The change in management will definitely have an impact on the studio. The effects might take some time, even years maybe. But I'm optimistic. Ranma & Lazarus are good signs.
Mappa having only 3 cours of anime in 2024 seems to be a good sign, especially since it's already fall 2024 and no release has been announced as far as I'm aware for winter 2025. Decent shouldn't be interpreted as great, but when the precedent is awful it would be disingenuous to not call it a big improvement
I pray that no production ever gets as bad as jjk s2. No human being should have to sacrifice their mental and physical health to the degree that we saw while this show was airing.
Very good video, I knew shit was bad but this helped me understand a lot more. I'm a lazy pos that doesn't want to do the research myself 😅. Thank you for the video 🙇♂️ Also adding an AMV at the end , absolute mad man 😂
Please absolutely do a Wonder Egg Priority production hell video. I am super curious to know what on earth happened with that show. And idk if you care about suggestions, but maybe you could do an animation analysis for 2019’s Dororo? Whether a specific episode, or just highlighting specific scenes throughout the whole anime. There’s a lot of really impressive action sakuga in it.
Bro jump has been doing the same shi with Mangaka, thus causing the 'infamous' bad shounen endings and all the so called "fans" of the story keep blaming the mangaka Its extremely frustrating seeing people shi on something without having all the facts Its not just the anime or manga industry, this is happening with powerfull companies in all types industries and is a situation im literally stuck in right now in the South African Metal industry with horrible deadlines made by people who don't even have an understanding of the production process (not the public hate tho) Point im trying to make is that those saying that the guys on top actually give a shi about the people doing the actual work either have something to gain from someone on top or they are ignorant to wat reality is Like you said, praising the bad actors for their terrible work or horrible company policies just makes them think that its justified Thanks for the vid🙏 and insight into something that is getting worse with each pasing year
Can you one day make a video on a "Production Heaven" video cuz I'm curious if there is any anime out there which was just pure bliss to work on instead of the usual warzone we have. Though if I were to make an assumption it would probably be an OVA from the 80s or 90s since they purely relied on sales from video stores, thus didn't have a soul crushing schedule

You mentioned how the MHA anime production schedule sucks. I have some doubts about that. From what I've read on blogs and tweets from people like Ary, Liborek, Blou, the only season that had a really bad schedule from the beginning was the first one, and then the fifth one broke down halfway through. But there are blogs from Liborek saying good things about the schedule for the second season when it was released, a tweet from Blou from 2019 talking about how the schedule for the fourth season was the best they've had until then Also, they always manage to finish the first cour of every season well before the premiere. Not only that, but there was episode 142 with only 1 animation director and no 2KA. Of course, the schedule started to get tight in the last third this season, but that happens with every 2-cour anime. From what I know, the anime only doesn't go beyond its limits because it doesn't really want to, and that's what helps them to keep the production safe. I've seen Blou himself saying that episode 12 of Hakuyu Go would probably have had its ambition much more restricted if it were done on a good schedule Anyway, you can tell me what I'm wrong about, that's what I'm commenting for
@@Felipe-xq7pc You're technically not wrong at all, just that the industry is in such a state that a show with the bare minimum planning like MHA could be considered as "not bad". MHA simply makes way too many sacrifices to pump out content on time. There are some very simple changes they could make, like, you know, not produce a movie with the same team, but they have to and that causes the struggle. Having no 2nd KA is easy when the episode is made up of slideshows. Season 2 did have a good production; no movies at the time and plenty of high level staff available. A production like that is still possible: look at frieren for example. Their schedules are actually comparable, just that frieren has a much better talent pool to work with cause they don't have a movie on the side. All of this considered, I wouldn't call MHA a good production. Not even Frieren is. The only 2 cour shows that come to mind that can be considered to be good productions are Bungou stray dogs, fire force and undead unluck. None of these are sakuga fests that look as good as Frieren, but these are all well produced TV anime.
@@-MankoManI'm sorry, but I genuinely don't understand your criteria here. Frieren is "not a good production" despite the fact that it was able to stay very consistent and manage resources effectively for the priority episodes, but Undead Unluck is, even though the second half was clearly rough on a lot of spots?
@@carloscauan7967 No, he's right, and his criteria is schedule and conditions I think Since before it started sakuga people were talking about how Frieren's schedule wasn't good for a 28 episode show. It remained consistent because Fukushi and Keiichiro Saito are great at their work
@@carloscauan7967Undead unluck and fire force have dips in quality cause of proper prioritization. Low priority segments look rougher than the high priority episodes. It's a concept that's dying out, since these days every TV anime is chasing the movie quality look. I'm against that very idea; if the production doesn't allow to sustain that level of quality, there's no need for the staff to be forced into it. Not every show can be a heavenly delusion. Frieren obviously looks fantastic, but that's in no part due to the schedule and entirely due to the capability of the staff. Releasing 4 episodes at once sounds like a great idea but that's 3 weeks lost for the production of 28 episodes. Every TV anime has to chase some sort of gimmick, like DanDaDan with it's theatrical release, and it always ends up straining the staff.
I wish chainsaw man was being developed by a diff studio, even if it meant we'd get it much later. Jjk and csm are basically at production war rn, and i hate it because it pits both fandoms against eachother so the popularity will lead to their preferred anime getting more time and dedication. theres only so much time for both
One tiny correction at 39:54 Pine Jam wasn't given the blanket company credit where there is an ambiguous amount of people involved, instead like the company Teddy right above them they are credited because an artist contracted to them worked on the episode in Pine Jam's case that artist would be Shiho Nakazawa.
We can only hope CSM Reze Arc and its staff is able to bring us something amazing, even if under complicated circumstances. But considering whos the director and some potential staff names, I'm sure they'll do something impressive.
I loved ep 11 so much, it was the first and basically final episode of s2 that i liked, i felt the finesse. Ill re-watch s2 soon, idk why i didnt like it very much, s1 is still by far my preference.
People calling ep8 low priority are so misinformed it's crazy, I've seen so many of them. 1 guy called ep14 twitter Kaisen implying that they had trash staff
You said that jjk s2 had 6 month, when some artist and people like Onsen said they've been working at least on ep 16 if not for a year, but at least for 10 month
Well if season 2 started with 6 months of production time already, it would’ve taken at least 3 months for 16 to even air which is more time they can work on the episode. Thats probably why, since they often worked on every episode until the last minute.
@@Mefrius As I mentioned already in the video, ep 16 existed as a whole separate entity compared to JJK S2's production. Also, "6 months" not to be taken literally, it's just the lead time before ep 1 aired approximated based on timeline and staff overlap. The time that the animators had could have been even less, or in some cases more. Also also, as the comment above said, ep 16 had 19 extra weeks after the first episode aired, so add that to the lead time as well.
You know everytime you said that an episode could have looked even better I have a hard time believing it because even with the horrible production the animators made it look beautiful I just hope that Mappa will give more time for the animators to work Chainsaw Man movie and the next season of Jujutsu Kaisen.
if you look at the animators/talent that was on some of those episodes you can see why having a better production and schedule would drastically make the final product look even better than what was given
recently watched belle movie by mamoru hoshida, i want you to make an animation analysis video, because i want to know how they make that movie so beautiful inturms of animation, i cant tell whats 2d whats 3d sometimes, the character acting animation was something I've never seen in any anime or very few anime, also the songs 🤯.... It was mind blowing
The real issues with Season 2 that I've noticed, weren't really problems with animation (as in how much animation there was) or art quality. They were with editing and clarity, which is almost certainly an issue caused by crunch. For example, during Yuji's first fight with Mahito in this season, there is that one elevator sequence. You see Mahito and Yuji struggling against eachother inside it, but suddenly there is a cut to Itadori just standing outside of it. Very sudden and jarring imo. There are other little moments as well when the action of a character doesn't "read" or feel how it's supposed to. Not to mention the first version of Sukuna vs Mahoraga which had scenes stitched together. Idk, just how I felt about it while rewatching it My heart goes out to the animators, I wouldn't last in those conditions
@@seemantable3985 Well, the editing feels off _because_ the animation is incomplete. Also insane to think about just how little time the editors must have had; imagine being told to put together an episode using only the completed bits and pieces of animation mere hours before the episode airs.
@@-MankoMan Yeahhh, you're right lol. The fact that the team was able to make it work for the most part is absolutely insane given the limitations. Tbh everyone deserves respect. I guess I mentioned that all, because with other series with incredibly terrible schedules it's way more... obvious when you look at it, I guess? Like if you watch Dragon Ball Super, you can tell the schedule was completely screwed up without looking it up, while in JJK season 2 the "devil is in the details", I suppose lol.
7:18 🤣🤣🤣 Everything so well planned got runied by one person's greed which now affecting both projects will always be hilarious 28:23 THIS🗣️🗣️ even kozuma said it too Btw how umehara will handle 3 projects now, since both btr and mdud sequels r also announced
Umehara team is positively fucked. No Saito + they started production of 3 unique shows when they are realistically capable of only doing one at a time. This is Seshimo team all over again, except the material they work with is much simpler so they should have a slightly easier time.
@@userK894I have to add; 2 simple to produce shows and one massive headache being Elusive Samurai. Wish Akebi's production line could take Dress up at least, but they are on the spy x family grind.
Great Video. Wistoria s2 is announced, can someone enlighten me production conditions? Because ep 11 was sakuga masterpiece but i cant be the only one noticing awful character designs. I really want s2 to not be a disaster atleast
I know this is never going to happen but I want to put this out in the Universe, "Make Production Hell Video on Wonder Egg Priority". I want to know what the hell happened to that show, especially later episodes where animator had to work just hours before the episode was aired and got hospitalized regularly EDIT: 1:11:57 I hope someday this comes to fruition
21:15 the point about having empathy towards the staff involved is kind of a missed argument, it is generally missed/dodged by non-sakuga/mis-informed sakuga fan's head cuz none of them have ever held a pencil in their hand to understand how much efforts & pain is required to create something,. We're fighting human stupidity, which is the most invincible, indestructible virus on this earth
I once got in an argument in a PP comment section about whether sakuga fanatics talking about animation is making anime discussion more toxic, and I kept responding with similar statements to yours in this video. As much as the are more people than ever being toxic about animation discussion, sh*tting on animators, simping for companies, power scaling artists and spreading misinfo, sakuga fanatics like you or KVin or Geth aren't the causes of toxicity. Toxicity ultimately comes from conceit and ignorance, so people who care shit informing others with correct information are actively fighting against toxicity. I want more people to talk about production online, good and bad, so companies will know that we care about bad conditions and want more shows with good conditions. We can't change anything with "OP>JJK" or "UFOTABLE IS WASHED, MAPPA GOATED" or sending death threats. We can change things by making well researched threads, or blogs or videos that teach people what to know and how to make educated guesses. Thanks for this one Manko "The Strongest™" Man

I love when you go missing for months and come back with an hour long banger

Otsuka is nothing short of evil

Please absolutely do a Wonder Egg Priority production hell video. I am super curious to know what on earth happened with that show.
And idk if you care about suggestions, but maybe you could do an animation analysis for 2019’s Dororo? Whether a specific episode, or just highlighting specific scenes throughout the whole anime. There’s a lot of really impressive action sakuga in it.
Great video once again, thank you for educating the masses!
Bro jump has been doing the same shi with Mangaka, thus causing the 'infamous' bad shounen endings and all the so called "fans" of the story keep blaming the mangaka
Its extremely frustrating seeing people shi on something without having all the facts
Its not just the anime or manga industry, this is happening with powerfull companies in all types industries and is a situation im literally stuck in right now in the South African Metal industry with horrible deadlines made by people who don't even have an understanding of the production process (not the public hate tho)
Point im trying to make is that those saying that the guys on top actually give a shi about the people doing the actual work either have something to gain from someone on top or they are ignorant to wat reality is
Like you said, praising the bad actors for their terrible work or horrible company policies just makes them think that its justified

Though if I were to make an assumption it would probably be an OVA from the 80s or 90s since they purely relied on sales from video stores, thus didn't have a soul crushing schedule

@@-MankoMan MAPPA taking in chainsawman is a mistake. It hurt both series.

You mentioned how the MHA anime production schedule sucks. I have some doubts about that.
From what I've read on blogs and tweets from people like Ary, Liborek, Blou, the only season that had a really bad schedule from the beginning was the first one, and then the fifth one broke down halfway through. But there are blogs from Liborek saying good things about the schedule for the second season when it was released, a tweet from Blou from 2019 talking about how the schedule for the fourth season was the best they've had until then
Also, they always manage to finish the first cour of every season well before the premiere. I've seen Blou himself saying that episode 12 of Hakuyu Go would probably have had its ambition much more restricted if it were done on a good schedule
Anyway, you can tell me what I'm wrong about, that's what I'm commenting for
@@Felipe-xq7pc You're technically not wrong at all, just that the industry is in such a state that a show with the bare minimum planning like MHA could be considered as "not bad".
@@carloscauan7967 No, he's right, and his criteria is schedule and conditions I think
Since before it started sakuga people were talking about how Frieren's schedule wasn't good for a 28 episode show.
Wistoria quality also toned down a lot after first 2 ep. Those 2 ep were so godly that rest after just looks mid
Ep 10 (Yoshihara) was also quite great. Miso and TNK's SB eps were quite something...
nice moustache brother

I appreciate this section since I’ve always wondered how the mha anime may be affected from the movies.
I wish chainsaw man was being developed by a diff studio, even if it meant we'd get it much later. Jjk and csm are basically at production war rn, and i hate it because it pits both fandoms against eachother so the popularity will lead to their preferred anime getting more time and dedication. theres only so much time for both
Yeah it hurt both series from reaching their full potential.
Thank you!
I totally missed the bold Vs not bold letters over there. Thanks for the correction!

Bro finally uploaded 🗣️
People calling ep8 low priority are so misinformed it's crazy, I've seen so many of them. 1 guy called ep14 twitter Kaisen implying that they had trash staff
You said that jjk s2 had 6 month, when some artist and people like Onsen said they've been working at least on ep 16 if not for a year, but at least for 10 month
Well if season 2 started with 6 months of production time already, it would’ve taken at least 3 months for 16 to even air which is more time they can work on the episode. Thats probably why, since they often worked on every episode until the last minute.
Is there a link to the Onsen statement you're talking about? I'm very interested in this topic.

Idk, just how I felt about it while rewatching it
My heart goes out to the animators, I wouldn't last in those conditions

I was just thinking about you not uploading any video yesterday 😮
