    A guy I met while serving in the Army in the 1960"s went out with her on a date and said there was no attraction whatsoever between them. Now I understand why. I loved Leslie Gore she was a major star in the 1960's. I think her best song was "You don't own me" . Slightly ahead of it's time IMO. RIP Leslie you were wonderful.

      One of my brothers met her while she was popular and said she was kind of cold and uncommunicative, which again I think is because she was a lesbian who had no interest in men, who in turn were pursuing her, which she had to constantly deal with.

    The truth of the matter is the record company used her. When she stopped having hits they dropped her and then had the gall to claim that she owned THEM thousands of dollars (after making millions off her voice). Lesson here: BEFORE you sign a recording contract hire an honest music attorney to review it FIRST. IF you have a big hit, go back to the company and renegotiate the contract (put a clause in that will allow you to do this). Also, always have an "out" clause in any contract you sign that states that you can "walk" if things are not to your liking. IF you have a big enough hit, don't worry they'll renegotiate

      I really like Lesley Gore, but I also have my doubts about the claim that she was THE most successful female vocalist of the 1960's. She certainly was ONE of the most successful, but her major hits were all within the years 1963 and 1964, with one return to heavier airplay in 1967 via "California Nights" (a song with a decidedly more adult feel to it than her earlier material). The latter part of the 60's gave us Dionne Warwick, Petula Clark and Aretha Franklin, who all had multiple Top 10 hits as well and who I would argue were at least as successful as Gore during that decade, if not more so.

      Sahlee Cakes Also called double tracking, it's when the same person records two parts, and they're played at the same time so she's, essentially, singing with herself in the final product. You can hear it in lots of 60s songs -- the Beatles did it a lot -- and in many thereafter. There were eventually triple and quadruple tracking, too, as recording technology became more sophisticated.

    • @johndipinto4084
      @johndipinto4084 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Historian212 They were also doing double-tracking with Frankie Valli at the time, which is why his falsetto sounds almost freakishly strong on the Four Seasons records. Gore and Valli were not the first singers to use the technology though - Patti Page was doing multiple vocals on her recordings as far back as the late 1940's, usually singing harmony parts against the lead track.

    The only problem with the "Profiles" series is it's looseness with facts: an unfortunate tendency to overstate. Lesley Gore was from far from "the most commercially successful female singer of the '60s." Lesley placed 18 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart during that decade -- while, for example, Connie Francis racked up 54 and Brenda Lee 58. In addition, the idea of doubletracked vocals was hardly an innovation in the early '60s.. That had been going on for more than a decade by that point! It was that technique that allowed Patti Page, singing along with herself, to be billed as "The Patti Page Quartet" on records like her million-selling "With My Eyes Wide Open I'm Dreaming" in 1950 while at the same time Les Paul was doing the same thing with Mary Ford's voice on #1 hits like "How High The Moon." I don't know who conducts the research for "Profiles" but these kinds of errors pop up in nearly episode, damaging the series' credibility. Other than the factual goofs and overstatements, though, "Profiles" is a very good program. ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````their tends

      Lesley was considered the most successful female soloist of the Girl Group Era (roughly 1962-65), which is something quite different from being the Most Successful Female Singer of the 60's, you're quite right.

    • @horarwgt
      @horarwgt 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Todd Brandt Well, let's see. Lesley didn't chart at all prior to 1963 and, according to Billboard, Brenda Lee was the 4th biggest hitmaker of 1962. (Connie Francis was 5th;`Dee Dee Sharp 9th.) In 1963, Brenda ranked sixth, Connie had fallen to 15th and Lesley checked in as 16th. In 1964 Mary Wells ranked 9th, Lesley 11th and Dionne Warwick 15th. In 1965, Pet Clark became the only female soloist among the year's Top 20 artists. By that estimation. while still a major female soloist of the 1962-5 era, Lesley was still outranked by both Lee and Francis. Lesley Gore scored 14 hits during that period while Connie charted 26 and Brenda 29. Personally, I liked Lesley's records better, too, but the truth is she was NOT the most successful female soloist of the Girl Group Era (which was actually longer than 1963-5) or any other period. ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

    • @tjbnyc76
      @tjbnyc76 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      horarwgt
      I was going to add, in my original reply, that claiming ANYONE as "the Most Successful Soloist of the Girl Group Era" is problematic and open to debate because the "Girl Group Era" is a bit hard to pin down in terms of WHAT the "sound" was and WHO could be considered a part of it (as opposed to, say, the British Invasion of 1964/65, which is pretty clear cut; or label-specific eras/genres like the classic Motown Sound, or late 60's Stax and Atlantic soul). [Incidentally, it's generally accepted that the unofficial girl group era was 1962-65, with major hits popping up in the years immediately before and after; but these years were the true apex, when the majority of girl group classics were being recorded and released.]
      Connie and Brenda were unquestionably the most successful female vocalists of the first half of the 1960's, but very little of their actual output could be legitimately considered part of the "girl group sound." The big ballad style of Connie's "Where the Boys Are" or Brenda's "I'm Sorry" are completely outside of the girl group genre, as are their "countrypolitan" numbers like "My Heart Has a Mind of its Own" and "Break it to Me Gently." In fact, the singles that would be most closely identified with what's accepted within the "girl group" genre were rarely successful for Connie or Brenda, who only occasionally dabbled in the sound.
      Mary Wells can't really be linked 100% to the girl group sound, since the vast majority of her records didn't fit the Brill Building-style of what we associate most with the genre, plus they almost always had MALE background voices ("My Guy" being the notable exception). Dionne and Petula, too, really couldn't be considered "girl group"-style singers.
      What it comes down to is that touting Lesley as "the Most Successful Soloist of the Girl Group Era" is likely a press agent invention, rather than any official title which can be backed up by hard data, and accurate inasmuch that Lesley really WAS one of the few female soloists of that period whose records SOUNDED like "girl group" records. In other words, "Maybe I Know" and "Look of Love" are just as "girl group"-ey as anything by The Chiffons or The Angels or The Crystals, whereas much of what Connie, Brenda, Mary, Dionne, Petula, et al., were recording at the same time are not. The only other female soloists I can think of who had success with that style and sound was Diane "Navy Blue" Renay, whose success was far more ephemeral; and the great Dusty Springfield, whose initial singles were very much in the Brill Building/Phil Spector mold, but who quickly abandoned that style for more sophisticated and soulful pastures.

    • @horarwgt
      @horarwgt 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Will Black Lesley Gore was sixteen months younger than Brenda Lee and Connie Francis six years older -- not exactly huge chronological differences. All three were/are close enough in age to be sisters. Comparing the three is hardly apples to oranges as all three were pop singers competing in the very same marketplace on the very same Top 40 radio stations to the very same listener base, each releasing hit after hit in their own distinct styles, Statistically, Lesley racked up 21 chart singles between 1963 and 1967, Brenda 52 between 1957 and 1973 and Connie 58 between 1957 and 1969. Interestingly, all three ladies' peak years pretty much coincided. In contrast, the 1956-9 hitmaking career of Jane Morgan was well over by the time Connie, Brenda and Lesley were all battling for airplay. Doris Day was then also yesterday's news, as her hitmaking years ran from 1945 to 1958! I think one of the most remarkable testaments to Lesley Gore's great talent harkens back to something Gladys Knight once said -- that "singing is acting to music." Gladys noted that singers in concert have to shift from a happy song to a sad one and back again -- and to do that fully believably takes real acting ability. Think about it. Nearly every Lesley Gore song was about heterosexual relationships -- yet she was able to put each of those tunes over so convincingly that you'd swear she was actually feeling the heterosexual emotions she was singing about. THAT took genuine skill.

      As far as double-tracking goes, it's true that Patti Page had been singing harmony with herself on record since the late 40's, but what was new in the early 60's was the idea of having singers doing multiple tracks of the SAME vocal line, giving the voice a slightly thicker sound with an almost chorus-type effect. You hear that a lot on Lesley Gore's records and they were also doing it with Frankie Valli's falsetto vocals at the time. It's a distinctive sound, and by the end of the decade you could hear it on quite a few recordings by other artists as well.

      peridotangel83 absolutely - I found it interesting in that all her songs were about men and young love. Doesn't mean that there is anything at all wrong with the fact that she was gay - just that she reflected the feelings of so many young heterosexual girls - that's all!
