    At 5:17, Lesley is absolutely irresistible. She is only seventeen here, but possesses the poise and presence of a person much older. Even that face, that magnificent face shows a maturity way beyond her adolescent years. She is pure magic and fifty-seven years later, I am still hopelessly in love with Lesley Sue Goldstein.

    Lesley Gore was the first rock n roll female singer -- something that writers have missed. She had 25 charted hits.

    • @cnoland2000
      @cnoland2000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Actually, I think you missed it too. Connie Francis was the first female Rock N Roll singer. In was 1958 and she scored gold with "Stupid Cupid." It even topped the charts in England--number 1 on their hit parade. And the hits just kept on keeping on from there. I liked Lesley too, but let's not forget Connie first, Brenda second, and then Lesley came on the scene.

    They always seem to skip her finest song in my opinion, California Nights. They always keep her stuck in It's My Party mode, just because it's an easy hook for people to remember and sing. It's My Party is almost now a parody of itself.

    • @60s70sVintageRock
      @60s70sVintageRock  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thomas Timlin - Agree. My favs were 'California Nights,' 'Maybe I Know' and 'You Don't Own Me.' I think 'It's My Party' and the sequel, 'Judy's Turn To Cry' were bigger hits because they were easier to dance to, lol.

    How could she possibly owe her record label? Artists had terrible deals in the 60s…

    • @johndipinto8816
      @johndipinto8816 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it was pretty standard in pop artists' contracts back then (unless they were able to negotiate otherwise) that all costs of recording their record would come out of the artist's cut of the sales profits. So even if the record sold well, it might be a little while before the artist would see any money from it. And if the record didn't do well enough financially to reimburse the "expenses" of recording, the artist would be on the hook to the record company for the balance.

    • @GeeBee909
      @GeeBee909 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's WHY all artists should to hire (separate from the record company) THEIR OWN (a) accountant (b) music attorney (c) PR team. Give them a percentage of their income. After her 1st hit Lesley was in a strong bargining position and should have put this team in place. They took FULL advantage of her (as they did so many others) because of this. See her comment here where she says "...and I was one of lucky ones...". I'm glad she fought them and got something. She made millions for them and should have asked for an audit. Ripping off the artist back then was a common occurance because many were young kids and/or didn't know how the music business "worked" and they took FULL advantage (same thing happened to the Beatles) of them @@johndipinto8816

No lip sync , or other mumbo jumbo that they bring out d=today & call 'singing , music or whatever ' What a suburb era to grow up in... wasn't it... Peggy Wood
