  • October 7, 2016: Summary video of my Category 3 hurricane MATTHEW chase.
    I chased Hurricane MATTHEW on Ormond Beach, FL.. It was my 6th hurricane chase outside Puerto Rico. Peak wind gusts at my location likely exceeded 100mph (probably peaking near 110mph) with sustained hurricane conditions of Category 1 intensity. The western edge of the western eyewall moved onshore my location, bringing strong winds and heavy rains. At that point, MATTHEW was a Category 3 hurricane with 120mph surface 1-minute winds. Despite the fact that part of the eyewall moved over land, the strongest winds were in the east and northeast quadrant, and remained over water. Still, hurricane conditions brought notable wind and storm surge flooding to a region not used to such strong hurricanes.

    Just moved to florida 9 months ago. Thank you for putting things into perspective as to what to expect in a hurricane. I dont think ill ever lose my love for florida no matter how big the storm. If my apartment gets destroyed, ill let insurance take care of my colatteral, and find a different place to rent. I wouldnt mind changing scenery every so many years anyways. Its all part of life's adventure anyways. God bless

      Thanks for your comment! Yes, the eyewall barely brushed the coast, and on its weaker side. While it had max sustained winds of 120mph with higher gusts, those remained overwater. We managed to experience gusts mostly in the 100mph range, peaking near 110mph in the strongest bursts.

    Just survived hurricane ian. Im here to tell everyone nothing is more davastating besides the hurricane than being stranded in a flood. I am so grateful for the men and women dedicated to rescuing floridas citizens. May God bless every one of them. The hurricane might be freightening to an extent but nothing is scarier than being isolated in a flood with no power or cell phone coverage. No one should ever experience the sense of powerlesness of being in a flood

    • @HuracanadoWX

      I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience. I agree that flooding is the worst aspect of any hurricane. Water just don't give you any breaks. Where did you experience hurricane Ian? I got to get in the eye in Punta Gorda.

    What is the category of Matthew at landfall?

    • @HuracanadoWX
      @HuracanadoWX  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Despite that we got the edge of the western eyewall onshore, the hurricane technically didn't make landfall until reaching North Carolina as a Cat-1. When this video was filmed Matthew had 120mph Cat-3. However, those winds remained over water. Winds in this video probably peaked at sustained Cat-1, gusting to ~100mph at peak.
