September 20, 2017: Strongest storm I've chased. Borderline Category 4/5 hurricane directly hit my location in southeast Puerto Rico. I was located in exposed hills at 210 ft elevation and 4.8 miles from the coast. The northwest eyewall moved over after 4am, and brought the most extreme bursts of high-end sustained Category 4 intensity and Category 5 wind gusts. The edge of the developing eye (or moat) moved over by dawn, and a calming of winds and rainfall occurred, but it was still strong at minimal hurricane intensity or tropical storm force by then. After 6:40 a piece of the inner-eyewall brushed my location with violent gusts, then calming until after 7am. The northeast eyewall moved over past 7:20 am and brought intense bursts of wind and whiteout conditions gusting to near Cat-5 strength that lasted until past 8am. Most of the damage had already been inflicted in the front side, but the backside ended up destroying what was left of the vegetation.

We rode out Maria in my parents home in Salinas. I will never forget the awful sound of the wind. It’s something that I can’t describe.

I totally agree. I have seen in the order 15-20 tropical storms and hurricanes in Puerto Rico and the US; and Maria comfortably ranks in the #1 spot. It's not even close.
I have a friend who lives there, he said the whole landscape has changed In some places, hillsides were swept away, Entire forests were leveled!
Wow, great job with this, Jose! This is a great video document of the passage of MARIA. I loved the lightning at dawn, and the turbulence after the lull is incredible-- just a solid wall of chaos. I'm grateful for our interactions and communications during this event, I sure learned a lot from this experience. Yes, the whiteout in the backside was just phenomenal: I came back in November and couldn't believe how close those trees and houses actually are. The visibility was so poor that it makes you feel that everything is further away. I just wish the NW eyewall had moved onshore after dawn. The tree damage... just incredible. I couldn't fathom such a cleanup of the landscape by this extreme hurricane. I'm planning on releasing damage survey footage from Humacao all the way to San Juan, but that will take some time. Son muy bien recibidas ya que este fue un storm chase de Los más difíciles que he tenido; no solo por la intensidad del fenómeno, sino por lo complicado de decidir donde lo iba a grabar y el documentar los vientos más fuertes en la oscuridad de la madrugada tratando de mantenerme seguro. Por ejemplo, esa noche hasta las 10pm todavía yo estaba guiando de Yabucoa a Humacao para re-posicionarme en medio de vientos de tormenta. Estoy contento por haber podido documentar la entrada, paso cercano y segunda mitad por completo. María fue un huracán difícil de superar.
You are very brave. Now that is very frightening. The sound is like a monster. How can anyone survive that wind storm. I am in long island ny. I have been in hurricanes, such as Sandy, Irene, but nothing compared to Maria.

Thank you so much for your compliment, Charles! Yes, this storm was up in the extreme league of hurricanes. We saw a high-end Category 4 hurricane, something that didn't happen in PR since 1928 (a midrange Cat-4 in 1932 and low-end Cat-4 Hugo in 1989). It was hard to film at night with so many sounds from stuff breaking around me, but the house where I was is well built, and provided for a safe location to film this incredibly intense hurricane.

José, definitivamente tu video es el mejor visualizado. Eres muy valiente, yo ni loca me atrevía salir, lo intenté pero me dio terror estos vientos y más cuando el portón eléctrico de acero de mi casa se rompió y literalmente voló y los árboles de mis vecinos los troncos achucaron los carros. Eso fué en Manatí. Es tanto el pavor que me estoy preparando desde ahora. Pero sé de Humacao por amigos que aún ni electricidad y el agua va y viene y aún despues de 5 meses se nota el destrozo.
Gracias por tu comentario, Alexandra! No fue facil grabar vientos de esta intensidad y en horas de la madrugada donde la unica luz que tenia era la de los focos del carro. Llevaba años pensando como podria documentar un Cat-4 o 5, y pasaron muchas cosas que no anticipe. La logistica de grabar un huracan asi es totalmente diferente. Por ejemplo, hubo momentos en los que tenia que cerrar los ojos por la cantidad de pedacitos microscopicos de hojas que estaban volando. El ambiente en un huracan asi es totalmente distinto. Tienes razon respecto a Humacao, es una de las zonas mas afectadas ya que el huracan entro con los vientos maximos desde el agua y con el cuadrante norte que usualmente es el mas fuerte. No te asustes con otro huracan, ya viviste uno de los peores y veras que las proximas experiencias estaras mas preparada. Un saludo.

Como storm chaser y meteorologo puertorriqueño (y nacido en Humacao) este fue, hasta ahora, el evento meteorologico mas importante que me toco documentar. Fue dificil pero logre documentar el huracan en todas sus fases en Humacao, que como bien dices, fue donde entro el radio de vientos maximos. Saludos

The speed and sound of the wind is simply intense, and even scary at times; like a roar! Crazy amount of tree damage and flying/scattered debris towards the end. Excellent footage, and astounding how calm you kept considering the circumstances!
Thank you so much for your very kind comments! I must admit that the intensity became overwhelming at times, and that I tried my best to stay focused on filming amidst the raging caos during the peak winds. There were countless tiny pieces of leaves flying around that some would even hit my eyes in those intense bursts of wind. I've been to a few hurricanes, but Maria has no comparison on my book!

Es uno de los mejores vídeos que he visto del huracán María en mi pueblo de Humacao. Esto demuestra la verdadera fuerza con la que entro este potente destructor de categoría 4 según el NHC. Me atrevo a decir que los vientos sobre pasaron las 155 mph. En este video se ve claro lo que María era verdaderamente. Yo pasé el huracán también en Humacao en el barrio Pasto Viejo y fue devastador. Tejas esta cerca de Mariana y Candelero osea más al sur y mas cerca del ojo de Maria. Desde mi casa pude apreciar como las lagunas de los manglares en Recusos Naturales se mezclaron con el agua de mar y el viento producía olas como si se tratara en el mar adentro. Te felicito hermano por tu labor de grabar excelente vídeo y esto servirá como documental para educar a otros que no saben lo que es la fuerza bruta de un huracán de categoría intensa. Cuando Hugo yo sólo tenía 5 meses de nacido y para Geroges en 1998 fue mi primer huracán también en Humacao pero lo que viví con Geroges no se compara jamás con María y por ende Hugo y Geroges tienen que pedirle la bendición a María.

Tienes razon, definitivamente muestra la intensidad de Cat-4+ que tenia Maria al tocar tierra en esa zona. Las rafagas sin duda entraron en la zona de 160-175mph y quien sabe si algo mas. A que hora fueron los vientos mas fuertes para ti en Pasto Viejo?
José M. García así hermano fue increíble, los vientos en mi barrio comenzaron a eso de la 1:00 AM del dia 20. Pero como a eso de las 5:40 AM y después que pasó el ojo a eso de las 6:30 AM considero que fue lo más fuerte de María en Pasto Viejo. Aún así el viento intenso duro hasta casi las 10:00 AM y poco a poco fue calmando hasta como a eso de las 12:00 del medio día. La verdad que no hay palabras para describir está experiencia vivida por nosotros.
Gracias por la descripcion. Si yo tambien estimo que lo mas fuerte fue a eso de las 5-5:30am. Y la segunda mitad bien intensa pero un poco menos fuerte que la primera a eso de las 7:30am.
Para mi hugo fue peor ese me arranco la puerta y las ventanas y mas mi casa temblaba y hubo mucho mas palos y palmas caidos q para maria y vi casas entera volar para hugo maria solo vi planchas de cinc pero hugo jamas

Enit melendz Gracias por el comentario positivo, Enit! Trate de capturar la esencia de los vientos más fuertes en la madrugada con luz artificial. Tienes razón, los vientos no tienen comparación con los azotes recientes anteriores. En mis alrededor de 15 experiencias entre tormentas y huracanes; María es el más fuerte de todos por lejos. Fue un azote de Categoría 4 de alta intensidad, es difícil ver un huracán así de fuerte. Saludos

Soy de Gurabo pero naci en Humacao, mi padre era profesor en la UPR Humacao, y estaba en casa de mis padrinos que me ofrecio una buena localizacion para documentar este azote extremo. Tienes razon, no compara ni con Hugo ni Georges. Este azote fue de Cat-4+ en la zona.

Good day Jose, I'm originally from the Virgin Islands and am working on putting together a documentary about hurricanes Irma and Maria to try and encourage donations for recovery efforts (that are still very much needed, especially in the BVI) and to aid in prep work for next season, knowing these storms are only going to be getting worse. Muchas gracias por tus palabras, Erick! Me alegra que te haya agradado; el proposito de esta edicion fue precisamente mostrar todas las fases del azote en la zona por donde entró el huracan. Inicialmente conté con grabar toda la pared de dia, pero la pared noroeste entro pasadas las 4:30am y tuve que ajustar mi plan usando las luces del carro para alumbrar. Creo que logré mostrar parte de lo que esa pared trajo, condiciones de Cat-4 solidas con rafagas frecuentes de Cat-5. Ya la segunda mitad solida Cat-4 fue mas facil de grabar, aunque mucha de la vegetacion se perdio en la primera mitad que en mi opinion trajo los vientos mas fuertes. Estoy trabajando en unos videos de daños. Pronto los publico.
Gracias a ti por haber hecho un exelente trabajo. Soy de la zona de Humacao del casco del pueblo, y un apasionado a este tipo de fenómenos atmosféricos. Me encantó porque por primera vez encuentro un vídeo con cada detalle de lo que quería ver. Además que lo viví, intenté grabarlo también, pero el miedo me arropó en ese día y pues no tenía carga tampoco para estar grabando todas esas horas pero de verdad que te botaste con el vídeo quedó de show. In Ancient Times people use to personify the events and forces of nature. For example strongs and destructive winds were associated in ancient Babylon with PAZUZU the demon of the South West Winds. To named a destructive element of that nature with the name MARIA which means The Beloved does not make any sense at all or simply means that the Ancient were more accurate in named such forces.
The reason these names are chosen is to make them easy to communicate to the public when issuing warnings. In reality, its a "hurricane" which derives from the Taino word "juracan", the god of destruction in their religion.

This hurricane was a monster!!! I live in Las Piedras, which is right next to Humacao, and the worst part started after 4:00am. The ferocious winds, the noises. Pure hell!!! We, the people that went through this, will never forget that Sept. 20th. George and Hugo were nothing compared to María.

I live in las piedras too. To me the worst part started at 6:30-7:00am after a moment of calm and change of wind direction. That was horrible

This hurricane reminds me i was 12 in hurricane andrew in homestead,florida this the eye i know what you guys and girls went through in puerto rico.

The noise is hard to describe indeed. I tell you more, i was actually chasing the storm, and the days following we had early morning thunderstorms and gusty winds, and I would wake up every time. It lingers in the back of your head for a while.

I think hurricane maria hit 200 mph winds but the hurricane scale couldn't measure it or wind gauge wasn't high enough. I think irma too hot atleast 190 or 180 mph. That hurricane maria made my father's hometown of San Lorenzo kinda look like a bomb went off cause the town's in the hilly terrain countryside in pr. Also Storms are only gonna get more stronger and frequent in the Atlantic especially Caribbean where the water is piss warm.
Tainopisno1 Its possible that peak gusts in some elevated areas in the SE and El Yunque reached the 200mph range. That said, gusts definitely exceeded 160mph in most areas that were in the eyewall and in the landfall area. It's really hard to estimate wind intensity in complex terrain. Indeed, damage in the SE (this video location included) resembled what an upper Cat-4 hurricane would do. It's truly amazing.
It definitely did not reach 200 mph. All the recon data of NHC strongly suggest that Maria was 175 at peak (155 at Puerto Rico). It was 100% that Maria did not have 200 mph sustained winds

The last conversation I had with my granduncle was about Hurricane Maria. He said in spanish that this wasn’t a hurricane… it was a monster!

It was a cat 4 at landfall.
Maria made landfall as a top end Category 4 Hurricane winds were at 155mph with gust higher than 180mph with a very low atmospheric pressure at 917mbars. What made it worse that it went through a eyewall replacement cycle in which it did drop the winds but the wind field was grew larger and it had a slow foward moving speed of 7-8mph to the west-northwest. Usually they move at 15-25mph.
NHC post-storm report has confirmed a landfall intensity of 155mph, or upper-end Cat-4. Mind that gusts well into the Cat-5 range were experienced in the landfall area and the mountains.
Hoy a 3 años aquí viendo este video tan brutal . Yo la pase en barrio peña pobre de naguabo y ese sonido sigue intacto en mi cabeza. Pense por momentos que la casa que aunque es de cemento se arrancaría y por ratos me recostaba de paredes dentro de la casa pq sentia que me desmayaba y me despegaba pq sentia como vibraba las diferentes paredes de la cual me recostaba por momentos por el agotamiento físico y mental de escuchar ese sonido parecido a veces a un tren y otras veces como turbina de avión.

Excelente chase José, lo recuerdo como si fuera hoy. Mi video muestra la pared noroeste y norte cuando impacto mi casa en Gurabo, grabé atraves de la puerta de la sala. Me acuerdo cuando por teléfono me dijiste que la pared estaba entrando y que pronto la tendríamos sobre nosotros. El ruido, los olores de la vegetación destruida, los cambios de presión atmosférica haciendo que se bajaran los inodoros solos, los oídos tapados, los ruidos raros del viento. Todo se dió tal como dijiste que sería. Tu video es impresionante!

Los detalles que cuentas desafortunadamente no pueden ser capturados ni por la mejor cámara. Hi Veronique, thanks for commenting. Irma was stronger than Maria in terms of maximum sustained winds. We don't have confirmation of tornadoes in the Caribbean, though that's always a possibility given the difficulty in detecting tornadoes during extreme hurricane conditions.

Super typhoon yolanda hit Cebu City Philippines, i have a throma for several days before hitting the super typhoon i was so nervous 7:15 in the morning the strong winds and heavy rains starting the river in our barangay or street the river overflw and our 1st floor flood until 9:10 the landfall here in cebu the winds howling and howling i feel that i was in the airplane two airplane my ears are is very ouchy (hahaha) omg after 1:01 in afternoon, we are in the eye of super typhoon and 4:12 the strong winds and heavy rains stop and i pray to jesus that my whole family are safe and its a miracle my family are safe now

El sonido del viento varia dada las maneras en las que interactua con objetos como tendido electrico, hendijas de puertas, ventanas, pasillos, etc. Gracias por comentar.

So far so good at the end of August 2018. I sure hope that the Carribean and the US can get thru Sepetember and October with NO TROPICAL STORMS of.any intensity. As well as November.
While a break is greatly needed, we are going to be watching for a potential hurricane or two east of the Antilles over the next few weeks. Right during the climatological peak of hurricane season. We'll be watching!

These videos really don't do these storms justice. The physical experience is far more intense. Especially when those deep jet fighter sounding gusts rip thru the trees. Something video can't pick up. Hope the recovery down there is going well. I was in FL for hurricane Charley. That had gusts to 140mph. Couldnt imagine anything stronger. Gearing up for 2019.
Matthew Perna: You can add the fact that nighttime recording is even harder. Nothing replaces the in-person experience. However, these videos help documenting such historic weather events. Things are much better now, still more recovery to get done. I was there last week.
@@HuracanadoWX Good to hear the recovery is moving forward. We absolutely need footage like yours to educate people. Too many shrug off hurricanes as some wind and rain. Too many people stick around for or don't seek proper shelter for these storms. Hopefully with time people will understand how serious it is. The more videos like yours, the more peoples opinion may change on the next one. Keep up the good work man.

@@HuracanadoWX No. Unfortunately I moved to Virginia 6 years ago and visit during the summer months. Florida is where my home and heart is. But work is work. Charley was terrifying. The apartment complex we were in, exactly 9 miles north of Port Charlotte, we had the entire roof blow off, and water was pouring down all 3 floors. The suction in the hallways was unimaginable. But the sound is something that really notches up your respect for mother nature. I almost went last year to chase Michael, but work wouldn't allow me. I purposefully am saving my vacation weeks for the summer. Chasing storms is my hobby, whether severe, tornadic, or tropical. Love the weather. I will absolutely be moving back when the ways of the world allow me too. For now, we wait. Take care bud.

I don't know if its me but its seems like the backside of the storm was stronger, mainly after the 13 minute mark. You change your video spot also with the wind shift.
Ivan Viera Ivan Viera That's an interesting take. Yes, I had to change position during the relative calm in order to safely document the backside. My personal experience was that it was a textbook intense first and second half. However, when it comes to the strongest winds it felt like the first half NW eyewall had those. It felt like a tornado was moving through for a few minutes, especially between 4:30 and 6:10 in the video. Afterwards there was another crazy few minutes long burst. I also noticed that the most significant damage in the area came from the northerly winds, but that the backside inflicted additional damage. My feeling about the backside is that it was more stable, with periods of extreme winds and very heavy rainfall, probably reaching Cat-4 intensity as well. The truth is, by dawn most of the vegetation was gone, so that took away some of the drama off the second half. It was and extreme experience on both sides.
Great video a lot of lightning in the core of the hurricane. I don't know why but you see the lightning but don't hear the sound of the thunder. I saw that here in SJ with Irma south quadrant lightning but no thunder.
Ivan Viera Thank you so much, Ivan! Yes, lightning in hurricane eyewalls is mostly cloud to cloud, so you don't get to hear much thunder at all. On top of that the noise from the high winds covers the little sound you may get. In some extreme cases you can get cloud to ground lightning in the eyewall, and get thunder inside extreme winds, a super eerie feeling. I found and Irma video in St John that has that, and a typhoon video in Guam has a similar experience. In Georges I was in Gurabo and we got frequent lightning in the eastern eyewall. In Georges case the storm was intensifying as it made landfall, so we got a lot more eyewall lightning on that one!

If it wasnt for Maria stripping away a large part of the vegetation and taking down the faulty power grid of the island Im not sure if it would have been such a very terrible event for the island but it was and the people had to have been strong inside to survive such a huge blow.
It would have still been the very terrible event it was. Recovery may have been quicker in terms of electric grid. However, unprecedented flooding, over 40,000 recorded landslides (casualties included), accelerated coastal erosion, communication systems total collapse, air traffic control disabled, etc. Disruption of every industry and aspect of regular life. Long term psychological damages, etc. As you can see, it was the “full package” of disaster events. Maria literally rewrote the island’s modern history. It’s only the 2nd strongest storm on record in the island. Cheers.
@@HuracanadoWX Yes when you pinpoint every major after effect as you have with as much detail it is clear to see why Hurricane Maria was this generations San Felipe II. I truly hope this doesn't take place again for generations to come. Everytime hurricane season comes around I pray that there will be an invisible barrier around Puerto Rico like there was for over a decade when it comes to these types of disasters avoiding the island
