I’mma come clean Aunt Beff, as much of a help as you’ve been to me getting my first book published earlier this year and putting together the other 3 of my series I haven’t gotten to read any of the books of the series. @Bethany Atazadeh I felt your excitement from here. Congrats on the hardcover. I printed last year and I know the excitement, even if you sell 15 copies it is your work and something you did. Now about the size of the font that I have seen a lot of people print at 9 or 10PTs. I call these books, "Nose scrapers" because you have to get so close and your nose has to scrape the page to read the text. Congrats on your little series coming. I am sure you and your Husband are excited for that day when your little boy(I think you said) comes. I am sure he be a source of joy and happiness.

Oh my God, I'll definitely be getting the special edition. I personally happen to like bigger thicker books over smaller thinner ones. Can't wait for the special edition!

Totally hear you with the page margins and text size. Just played around with this at work, actually! The nice thing is, it’s not too major of a change to make. And the chapters, I’m on the train of thought where every chapter starts on its own page too. 😊 it’s coming along nicely, overall, though!!

I did see the "smoosh" when you first held it up, but it still looks great. (BTW, you match your book cover 😆!) I keep hearing that the pages are nice and thick. Overall, it looks great. How exciting for you!! Hopefully you can figure out a way to make it work and get most of the information you want into your omnibus!

I’m about to release my first PNR book next month and was debating KDP hardcovers for a personal copy cause I’m super scared of the print quality but now I really want to do it!! I’m keeping it as a personal copy cause I have plans to create a special edition version of my book in hardcover format in the near future 😋

That's awesome. I am not sure how many of my books I want in hardcover. For right now I only have my one book from Barnes and Noble which didn't include a dust jacket and they didn't put my cover photo on there either. I really want to give KDP a try now for at least my one book. I can't wait to see the real cover for your collection's edition.

Haha yes! Thank you so much! I can't wait to see the cover too :D And I didn't think to mention this in the video, but I will also link this hardcover to an ebook box set of all four books where the font will be much bigger too, since there's no size limit for a digital file :)
This is going to look so cool! Already looks cool, but can't wait to see the cover. My KDP hardcover proof also came with some minor damage, but it was apparently a manufacturing error, and mine was on the spine. I also noticed yours has the same thing mine does, where the pages, when laying flat and viewed from the side, appear to have a bit of a wave to them. Not sure what causes this but after the book sat on my desk for about a week, it's more or less gone away.

HI Bethany you can choose whether to have a "not for resale" or not on your proof copies. You have the choice in order proof settings. Maybe that's just in the UK.
Sadly no, that's not an option in the U.S. but you're lucky you have that!

Yay thank you! :D And honestly I don't think I will right now, just because the collector's edition cover that I'm purchasing is styled for a laminate cover only, but also because I've left the company where I previously created hardcovers with dust jackets. But you never know, maybe someday that will change!

@@BethanyAtazadeh I was thinking to tell you the same thing “that it would be fine with me to have the bonus future separately” but then I thought more about it and as a reader when I purchase Collectors edition of a book: 1st I’m ready to spend more for it 2nd I expect to have all of the extras in the edition without need to do anything extra(accessing a link for example and its hard copy so it’s not gonna be híperlink so I’ll have to go and actually typed in the search tab) I feel like links are great for ebooks because you just click on it.
Im not saying that is a bad idea just wanted to share my thoughts with you in hope to be helpful not to sound like im criticizing

Bethany, I’d like to know who has possibly had any issues with their KDP paperback proof copy having pages fall out. I received my proof copy on Thursday, March 24, 2022. I was excited about my book, (this being the sequel to my first romance novel. My first romance novel was done by a different company and NO problems). I also noticed the “not for sale” strip across my cover. I didn’t care for it. Then I noticed the crease near the spine on the front as well as the back. Way too close to the spine. It’s like that’s where it was marked for gluing the pages. It’s a job done poorly.
As I started looking through checking for errors, formatting, etc. I had pages coming out, close to thirty. I think KDP should do some reformatting regarding the gutter, giving more space there so that when they assemble, glue and press, you don’t have pages falling out because it wasn’t done correctly. Also, I see no reason why the outside margins couldn’t be a bit closer to the edge of the page. That would compensate for text fitting so much better, as well as the fact that people don’t have to all but bend the book to read those words near the gutter. Anyone else have any issues like this? I’d like to know, and what did you do about it? And, I’d hate to have my copies going to the copyright office and LCCN office with pages falling out. I’m beginning to wonder if I made the right choice in choosing KDP.
Instead of including the glossary in the book, you could include a QR code that links to a digital glossary on your website for people who want to see it? Then you have the win/win of people being able to access the glossary and more traffic being driven to your site!
That's a really cool idea! Yeah I'm more and more drawn to the idea of a secret webpage with tons of exclusive bonus material because then I can also add more to it and maybe even add extra details over time as well! :D

This is so cool! I won't object to a thicker book if you think the font is too small. Shoot, Brandon Sanderson has books that are over 1200 pages (epic fantasy).
For breaking up the chapters, I say keep it the way it is instead of bringing them to the previous page. I prefer a new chapter on a new page.
Yay thank you! Holy cow that's a lot of pages haha! I think this one would be just right at the 650-ish page count, but since KDP only allows 550 max, I'll have to get creative haha! And definitely will make that a last resort, I don't like chapters merging either!
Hi Bethany, were you aware that Barnes and Noble press has a hard cover option and you can go up to 800 pages and it comes with a dust jacket.
Yep! The whole point of this is to test out KDP Hardcovers for the first time haha. Plus B&N is only sold on their retail site, Amazon is expanded distribution worldwide.

For my hardcover of my book I had to do the same and combine my two books in one because the 75 page minimum. It should arrive in another 7 days or so. I titled mine the Deluxe Edition (it is a game book). I meant to just print the author copies but ended up accidently publishing it. Oh well. Lol

What you can do is make a collab with the first two books, with the character art and the glossery And make another Hard cover with the Last two books, with the Secret gift and the Gideon short story!
That'd be cool too, but I have my heart set on including all four! Good news, it's working out lovely and looks amazing! :D

Just stumbled across your videos today, I'm on a journey to get my first book published hopefully the beginning of the year. My two cents, instead of trying to create an omnibus, why not break it up into two separate books? Similar covers. Two different volumes. You can reformat the text to be larger and keep your spacing. Your chapter headers and scene breaks can remain. Keep your bonus material in and maybe add even more bonus material (unused artwork, fan art, etc) if you want to give it that collectors feel, something the fans didn't get in the solo books. First two books in one, and the last two in the last volume. You can also bundle books in Amazon right? Sell the pair for a special deal. Makes it easier on you and also a little less work before the baby gets here. Omnibuses are very popular in comics and they usually are over 1200 to 1300 pages for the whole run. I'm sure Amazon will get there after the beta period is over, they are probably seeing if they can handle it smoothly with the influx they will probably get before releasing the whole kit and caboodle. Last thing, are proof copies free? I thought that was why they put the "Not For Resale" bar on there, and the author copies didn't have it on them, to keep the bad actors from ordering a bunch and then selling them. Let me know if I'm wrong on that. But, it looks good and good luck on getting your project out by your deadline! 😊

Being that you combined 4 books in one, did you give each book in that one book it's own title page or just continued listing the chapters after the first book ended?

@Bethany Atazadeh - What is the minimum page count for a hardcover book with KDP? My book is a Children’s book. I am thinking my page count may be low.

I was actually so excited when I saw KDP hardcover as an option for me, but unfortunately it's actually not for my short story... Because of the minimum 75 page word count. Which, granted, with my little short story it'd be basically two boards with almost nothing in the middle but still XD Would be nice to have for myself.

Please don’t take out too much of the white space. It makes it so hard to read with out the space! I have a hard time reading lines that are close together. But thank you much for sharing your experience here!

Those spot maybe handprints. I've seen other authors complaining about their matte hardbacks coming with alot of handprints on them, especially black covers.
That's what a few other comments said, and I also heard they wash off pretty easy so I'll try that! :D
One problem here in the UK - you can create a hardback (just done that) but you can't order a proof FROM Amazon UK, you have to use other Amazons in other countries. I tried ordering from France. Obvious really. Only one problem - even though 'UK' is in my address, they can't ship a hardback proof.

i just got a shipment of books today and the one book that is matte has the same stuff on the cover. It is finger prints and it came of with a damp cloth. I rubbed it off very lightly.

Hello, I would like to know, if it's not confidential, how much did Amazon charge you for printing the book?
I can’t remember it I thought I put that in one of the videos about this hardcover-check the videos in the description and one of them will say! Ps every book will be priced slightly different depending on size, page count, color, shipping , etc.
Are there gold foil options on KDP?
Nope! I don't know any print on demand companies that offer that to indie authors, BUT the cover will *look* like it has gold foil! ;)
Every single hardback of my book that I've ordered through Ingramspark has the glue smears on the laminate cover. Comes off with a damp rag. Still disappointing because we shouldn't have to clean our purchases!

It's really not as big as I expected though - I just got a trad pub hardcover book that's just one story (Once Upon a Broken Heart) and it was bigger than this haha!

It's called an ARC copy, and the "not for resale" band is there until publication to make it clear it's not the final book.
