    UPDATE: I got the 2nd book's proof delivered today, and while the paper does have some very mild wave/ripple to it, it's not as bad at all! Hopefully this won't be a problem in the future.

    Question: What kind of rights does one still hold after publishing to Kindle Direct? Would I loose any right to the content? And if not, would I loose rights with their exclusivity deal? And if so, how does that all differ in terms of physical print, verses eBook? --- I've tried looking into all this, but it's all difficult to understand if you haven't actually put anything on there...

    This is great news. I just finished my book and wanted to go hardcover but I read earlier this year that KDP only produced paperbacks. Personally, I dislike dust jackets and prefer glossy covers anyway so that's perfect for me. Thanks for letting us know about the new Hardback option at KDP and best of luck with your books!

    I was SO excited to see this as an option the other day and cannot wait to get my books in hardcover. The rippled pages are a bit rubbish but overall I think it looks quite good! In my wishlist would be sprayed edges on the pages!!! X

    • @SydneyFaithAuthor
      @SydneyFaithAuthor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah that was a little disappointing to see when it got here, but I hope that's a one off issue. I'll update in the comments here when I get another proof. Sprayed edges would be AMAZING! And embossing, too, though that would have much higher technical requirements, I'm sure.

      Where would we get sprayed edges for our indie books? Like do you know what company does that?

    Thank you very much for quickly uploading the video about the KDP hardcover review. Your description was very thorough and showing us the actual hardcover they created and comparing it with the paperback really helps me decide which one I should go with. The quality of the hardcover looks great but since it just came out, let's hope that all hardcover books are as good as yours. I once got a 1 star review from a customer for my paperback book and she said that the pages kept falling. I told the customer that it was the KDP factory that made the book and requested to remove the review but she kept the review. I contacted KDP and requested to remove it as it was not about the content of the book but the physical quality of the book. They responded and said there was nothing they could do:( Anyway, good luck on your book sales! I would also love to see more TH-cam videos of yours. You explained very well.

      Thank you so much! That's really unfortunate, and how frustrating that must have been! I've had a similar issue with a KDP paperback in the past, but thankfully it was only with a proof copy. I have lots of videos planned for the near future, both on publishing and writing.

      @@SydneyFaithAuthor I'm sure it will. I'll get a few copies and see. Question for you: How are you thinking of pricing your Hardcovers? I know Paperbacks can be priced pretty conservatively and still make some profit, but i'm not really sure what the scale is for Hardcover books. Let me know your thoughts

    • @SydneyFaithAuthor
      @SydneyFaithAuthor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it totally depends on the author and their market/readers. The large majority of my readers prefer ebook, so I've chosen as of now to price the hardcovers low, as they were mainly for me anyway lol.
      I think if KDP ever offers more premium options for hardcovers (clothbound, stamping, foils, dustjackets) then I'd consider raising the prices because it's more of a premium product, and I'd spend a lot more time and money to create something like that, but for me, making the hardcovers wasn't much more work than making a paperback, so that's what I based my price on.

    • @MarcusBird
      @MarcusBird 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SydneyFaithAuthor interesting. I was wondering myself what the real “pull” was when compared to paperbacks, which are pretty good quality. For now I think the main marketing strategy that might work is if you have a physical launch and can have hardcovers available to sign etc since a super fan would like that. For now though, I’d really have to be a marquee author to charge Hardcover rates plus paperback and ebook. So I’ll most likely be like you, getting all superfan on myself with my own hardcovers lol

    • @SydneyFaithAuthor
      @SydneyFaithAuthor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I can see if you had a big physical launch you'd want hardcovers available for sure! Lol, yes, and it's just cool to get a hardcover of your own book, at least to me.

    Just discovered you and loved this video! Great quality and super informative. I published my first book in June through KDP and am so excited for the hardbacks! My only dilemma is I can't decide if I want the hardback to be matte or glossy. Do you think the matte will make the colors more muted looking?

    • @SydneyFaithAuthor
      @SydneyFaithAuthor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome, love to see new faces around here! I believe it will be the same matte finish as their paperbacks. I don't think it will make the colors muted, exactly, it's just that the darks will be richer with the glossy option. The matte on their paperbacks look good to me, and the colors are pretty much accurate to the image files (though with printing there will always be minor discrepancies.)

    Hi Sydney. This is a great little video about the kdp hardcovers. Can you please tell me which size books you have there in the video? The journal I plan to publish is about 670 pages of 6 x 8 in the paperback and you gave me hope that I could possibly get the pages down to 550 since the hardback pages are slightly bigger.
    Also is that cream paper? One final question for you... is the binding different on the hardcover? I've just created a manifesting journal where you write your notes in the book. I've just received my first ever proof copy of a book I've written (Whoop! Whoop!) and the binding of the paperback doesn't allow the book to open flat on each page.
    I'm wondering if the hardback binding would allow that.
    Many thanks!
    (Oh and I'm a complete novice with youtube message. Should I get notified when you reply to me? )

    • @SydneyFaithAuthor
      @SydneyFaithAuthor  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Dawn! No problem. The hardcovers are 6x9, and yes it's cream paper. The hardcovers don't lay flat out of the box, unfortunately, but I think you could journal in them pretty easily. They are a bit more rigid than the paperbacks due to the hardcover, but the assembly method of the pages seems about the same to me.

  • @blcksheep2254
    @blcksheep2254 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Does my 350-page novel count as a low-content book on kdp. I wanted to schedule a release for it but kdp won't let me since it's a low-content book. I was honestly gonna try and cheat the system and set my book as a large print that way I could set a release date. What should I do?

  • @LifeinGlow
    @LifeinGlow 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you dear for the lovely review! 🌻 Your covers look quite nice and vibrant in color. Did you use sRGB or CMYK for designing them and in what software?
    I've just created my first journal and about to order proof copies however it looks more subdued (muddier) in color in the shopping cart 🤨.
    Re warping - I wonder what happens if someone decides to return or exchange a book? Would a creator have to pay for it anyhow or not? It can affect reviews also.

    • @SydneyFaithAuthor
      @SydneyFaithAuthor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem! And thanks! I designed them in CMYK, as that's KDP's recommendation. From my experience, the previews can be a bit different from the actual product, and the printed covers can come off a bit darker than expected.

  • @IslandTimeVlogs

    I have to charge $24.99 for a hardcover to make the same amount at a $9.99 ebook. It's nice to be able to offer it, but the cost is definitely a turnoff for customers.

    • @SydneyFaithAuthor
      @SydneyFaithAuthor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the price is the biggest downside to the KDP hardcovers in my opinion. (And the lack of clothbound and dust jackets!)

    • @dlkwriter
      @dlkwriter ปีที่แล้ว

      $25 for a hardcover is pretty usual for a retail price. I wouldn't say the price is a turnoff for customers, but most would likely opt for the paperback for the lower cost if given the choice. But many still like the hardcover option, and it is often considered more of a collector option.

  • @c.c.milton

    Ya I went with Ingram cause others sorta nudged me and the paperbacks were fine but the hard covers… out of a box of 20 books 8 of them had too much glue on the cover so it stuck to the first page. One had a odd long piece of paper that stuck out. And two of them the covers were covered in glue. I hope it is better when my companion novel is ready. Do you know if you can change printing companies?

    • @SydneyFaithAuthor
      @SydneyFaithAuthor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a major headache, but if that was a while ago, I think I've heard it's gotten better lately, so there's hope. As far as legally, I have no idea, I've never researched that. As for technically, I've never formatted anything for Ingram before so I couldn't say if you can use the exact same files from one printing company to another, but I'd imagine that it's pretty similar and wouldn't be that bad to adjust the formatting for somewhere else.

      I've heard KDP's matte hardcovers are just like their paperback hardcovers, but I haven't seen them in person. As for personal preference, I like matte book covers more than glossy. But the KDP matte isn't my favorite, and like I said in the video, I have a lot of dark colors on my covers, and those usually turn out better with a glossy finish, so that's why I went with glossy this time.

      @Sydney Faith Author Thanks for the fast reply! I've heard the same things about Matte, I just wasn't sure if the hardcover improved things at all. I think I'll stick with glossy.

      No problem! Yeah, good call if you like their glossy, it's exactly the same.

    Is there a company that makes actually nice hardcovers and not these 1980s-classroom-style books?

      Yes. Get published for real by a real publisher, like Random House or something, and we’ll have good quality books.

    I made my first hardcover with KDP recently and I noticed that it smells really bad. Like, the glue or something is so off-putting. Is anyone else having this issue? It smells like Tequila I feel like lol

      Oh weird! I haven't noticed that and I have quite a few copies now. I wonder if the different manufacturing locations makes a difference? I would think they all use the same glue, though. 🤷‍♀️
