okay--i did this. i asked and got my books into three stores locally. They sold and were reordered. Covid was still going on some so no signings offered at that time. Then I went to find out if they would carry book 2. The man who orders for the store talked to me--and was condescending and said, HE didn't put indie books in at his store and he would not be ordering any more int the future. Really gave me a bad taste in my mouth. I had hoped it was just that store. I moved into houston and spoke to another B&N--in store they were amazing when I asked about a book signing. I was told how to make contact at that time. Then I received an email from the manager. She was not nice--said I would have to guarantee sales--by bringing people in and said that she would return any unsold books. WOW--i told her thanks but no thanks. I did do a signing at an indie store--and they were amazing--you brought your own books and used square for the purchase. I just feel each store in each area will behave differently.

Great vid. You have the personality for a book signing. I hope everyone realizies personality is key. You are on stage in a fishbowl. Smile and enjoy the process. If no one buys a book, imagine how many more people know you, your name, your product. My goal has always been not to sell, but to market. If they buy a book, thats gravy. I've always, always got a bump in online sales after an event. Take pictures, lots of pictures. Of customers, the store, employees. Take video of complemeting a customer on her outfit or hair, or playing peek a boo with a baby. WORK THE ROOM. Don't stand behind a table and wait for people to come to you. Meet them at the door. Be the store greeter. Lifestream if you can. Its all gold for marketing. Never forget to thank the store. Give the store a great review. Tell everyone how clean and well stocked the store is, how friendly and professional the staff is. Great job Beth. Im certainly going to check out more of your vids.
Thank you for this! I just received my author's copy of my first book through B&N Press and am working on writing the sequel. I've been working on it for three years now, and as it gets closer to being published so does living out my childhood dream of being an author :') The process has been so exciting!

Congratulations. I didn’t know I can use a free ISBN number on each platform. I thought if I publish a book with a free ISBN number then I can’t publish it anywhere else even with a different ISBN number. I would live to cut out purchasing ISBN numbers from my budget. I would be interested in a video on this topic.

I wanted to ask a question; when you did your Barnes & Noble book signing did you prompt any buyers to sign to your newsletter? The author that I saw this week signing in the front of the local Kroger market needs to watch this.
Aww it's tough, everybody starts out somewhere - signings are a lot harder than they look, it's nervewracking!
Great video! There are a couple points I would love for you to expand on. First, what wholesale discount and return policy were you working with for your books at B&N? (and what would be the set up for consignment basis?) Second, is there a reason you only sign your name instead of a personal message in each book? Lastly, Do you bring any type of bookmark or little giveaway at your table? Thanks again for a great video.
Sure! (1) No wholesale discount for The Secret Gift or The Secret Shadow - they're published through B&N Press, which doesn't have that option at the moment. The Stolen Kingdom series (all 4 books are published via Ingramspark) have the lowest discount possible on Ingramspark, I believe 35%. (They don't allow any lower, from what I remember). (2) I've never done consignment, so I can't teach on that, I can only recommend doing research. (3) I sometimes sign personal messages when I have more time, but I do that via my author website virtual signings where I ask what personalization someone wants in the book. (Also, I always sign the person's name, you just don't see that in the video because you're seeing me sign the remaining books that weren't purchased yet that were being left behind for future readers.) (4) I've done bookmarks in the past, but only gave out business cards this time around. Glad you enjoyed!

Thanks for going through this and showing and teaching us. But what happens if you aren't selling books and haven't gotten to a point where you're a smart business choice? I struggle with business and don't have that kind of mindset. Like I'm just an author lol. So I don't market very well.
That’s an awesome question! I think first of all you can’t beat yourself up over where you are currently, every author starts at the beginning and goes through a learning curve. That’s normal! Second though, start learning about marketing-you don’t have to do everything, but if you can find a tool that works for you, that’s what matters. Maybe social media is too much, but Amazon ads or a bookbub feature deal would be perfect. Once you’re willing to get some experience selling in general, you’ll be much more capable of selling to a bookstore-because in the end, it’s the same thing, convincing someone to take a chance on your books. :)
@@BethanyAtazadeh thanks for all the advice and encouragement. I think my biggest hurdle is a lack of money. It takes money to market and im doing all I can posting on social media but don't seem to be growing. So any money I do have goes to editing. Even then I can't always afford it so money is my biggest hurdle I think

Thank you! (1) the store makes that decision, and I’m not totally sure what goes into the decision making proceeds. (2) and nope, unfortunately with an ebook there’s nothing to sign!

This sounds like a dumb question but does B&N provide the books available for signing, or do patrons just come already with a book in hand?
That's not a dumb question at all! Every time I've done a signing at Barnes & Noble, they always purchase the books themselves. (I think that may be the case across most B&N locations, but I'm not sure.) For other signings, however, I often bring my own stock and use an app that allows me to take payments myself. That said, I did have a couple people at this signing bring in books they'd already purchased to have signed as well. :)
This is a very poor explanation what a waste of time.
