The British (or technically Canadian) Skink anti-air vehicle has been heavily requested by the War Thunder community for as long as I can remember. Gaijin did finally add it, but despite being a solid SPAA, practically no one plays it.

the skink is the most terrifying anti air i see in battle, mostly because it has a roof
Yeah. The Crusader AA with the twin 20mm is the same way. Just enough armor to stop cannons most the time so people come into strafe you and it's free kills.
I tend to use the Bosvark because everyone dives on it to get their free kill, and if I don't suck that day they get obliterated by twin 23mm with 4x the explosive filler as the skink
That alone probably puts it among the best AA vehicles of its BR range simply because your not a sitting duck the moment a fighter spots you.

I really like the roofed AA, the AEC AA and Staghound are so fun. You don't need to worry about dying instantly to a strafing BF109!
I find it ironic that just like in real life, the skink arrived too late to be a viable AA so you use it as an everything-killer just like the troops did.

Skink was literally perfect in my 4.7 lineup with Avenger, Firefly and Churchill VII. Add some CAS (I used Typhoon) and you end up with my favorite low-mid BR lineup. But now they ruined it since there is no tanks at 5.0 in britain...

They had it in a good spot at 4.7 where it had a good line up and then bumped it up to 5.0 because of the Bosvark and now its 1 of 3 vehicles at 5.0 for Britain the other 2 being a seafire and spitfire.
add to the fact that if you want to be usefull you will need to put in a 5.7 and 5.7 is often yeeted into 6.7 which is just a pain with UK
A lot of the lack of playtime on the skink other than battle rating is probably the fact it's not in the US tree. I recall a lot of folks screaming about that on release

@@aflyingcowboy31 T77 MGMC, T85E1 and T100 MGMC could all effectively fill the same gap as the skink
@@tigertank1819 Firstly the only one of these that could fill the Skinks gap is the T85E1, which is also an even more open top vehicle then the M16, but it is really the only choice, especially because of its cannons.
T77 = M16 with 2 more 50 cals, so meh, 50 cals are only decent around the M16 br, 4.0+ and they are pretty bad, the M16 with 4 50 cals is 2.7, so it would sit at 3.3 - 3.7, definitely does not fill in the Skink gap.
T100 MGMC doesn't exist, I am guessing you mean T10E1? Still doesn't change anything, has the same cannons as the Skink, but it only has 2 of them, so it is basically a US Crusader AA at 3.7, although still worse because it is completely open top and a half track because it is on the same chassis as the M16.
I know a big issue a lot of people had with the Skink is most of them assumed it would be put in the US tree because the RAM II is also
Bro the C.202 EC is so awesome. It gets 2 .50 cals and 2 german 20mms. .50 cals get like 700 rounds and the 20mms get like 500. That thing got ammo to spare.
I would absolutely love this if it was in the American tech tree. I'm so sick of trying to hit aircraft with slow firing 40mm only for them to tank the hit anyway. Sometimes I bring the M16 and it actually works better than the m42 and m19. Also my brother in Christ you are firing AP at aircraft

I believe that people (including me) who have wanted the skink in WT have already grinded to top tier, or have stopped playing the game and gone outside, but I was happy to see it, but I will probably use it when I can play the game for fun. Good video btw👍

i mean it was played the first week it was introduced because it was 4.7 and actually fit into a lineup,
and then the German mains cried because their puma spam was being obliterated and the new VK's couldn't outright ignore it flanking them so it was obviously overpowered and needed to be uptiered to 5.0, and being the ONLY 5.0, and also on the upper edge of british lineups because theres only a sinlge 5.3 and a single 5.7 tank, theres literally only 1 BR range to play it at now.
it needs to be 4.7 again or even 4.3, its nothing more than an up armored whirbelwind.
Well it got added too late pretty much. It's also a backfill spaa so most people arent gonna go back and grind it, it also pales a bit in comparison to an aa from the 60s that is at a lower battlerating for some reason.

I mainly don't play the Skink cuz I didn't buy it when I had the chance so now I have to research and buy the Bosvark, which is honestly a joke of a tank.
That whole reaction to killing the Sherman 105 frontally is the same reaction I had killing an IS-2 from the front with the Flakpanzer 341 with only HE rounds. Just a "HUH? what??"

Well in the meantime they've added Ystervark & Bosvark since Skink was requested. Back then there was only the Crusader spaa. I'm currently still grinding Bosvark

Hey spookston I saw this railgun tank called the emkv90 tor and it is from the game battlefield 2042.
7:50 supposedly they patched that bug right now but it happened to me as well when I was driving a Black Prince and I died to an Ostwind 37mm autocannon that "penetrated" the side of my vehicle from a high angle.
I genuinely bawled my head off throughout the video. This was such stupid fun. Especially the conga-line of assists you got courtesy the C 202 Folgore pilot.
Please start making videos about fictional war vehicles again, they were always my favorite on your channel
It was first requested so many years ago that Gaijin's refusal to add it became a meme and so when it was finally added, the vocal player base jumped on it for about 5 minutes.
It's like the Maus, a terrible tank. But whenever they make it available annually, everyone jumps on for a few games before promptly forgetting it exists for another year.
20mms are definitely underperforming in the AA role. It's not just the skink, they're all crap. A single 20mm shell hitting a prop fighter should tear it to pieces. Instead, you need multiple hits. 50cals are much more effective.
The main reason why I got kind of fed up with the skink is that I really wanted it in the American line. Most other Canadian vics are in the American line and America's mid to low tier SPAAs lack strafing protection that the Skink offers.
I think lots of people wanted it to flush out the US AA line but instead it went to the brits
i can't think of a more unrelatable person alive today, like i'm trying to get in the headspace of being someone who takes one look at the skink and not know why everyone would beg for it but i just can't do it

i think two things are responsible for the fact people dont play the skink:
1) SPAA is super punishing in terms of its skill requirement, especially at mid tier where planes become much faster. People just dont feel like dedicating hundreds of hours PER VEHICLE to learn how to nail Me-262s effectively.
Its also not very fast or nimble, and is a huge target, so people cant abuse it for fast caps and sitting in corners like they do with the R3 T20
2) players have become sick of the exclusive vehicles. Theyre sick of insane grinds for mediocre, niche, even outright terrible vehicles, and theyre tired of some vehicles having 10x the grind of their standard tree counterparts for almost no notable difference other than rarity/bragging rights.

They killed it when they moved it to 5.0 there is like no line up and it has less pen than the ystervark which is at 4.3, they shouldve left it at 4.7 where you have one of the few good british line ups
People like the skink because its basically just an sherman wirbelwind but were all dissapointed when it ended up on the british tech tree

I was going to say, "I saw a Skink the other day."
Then I watched myself get gunned down by a skink from the other player's perspective.
Loads of people did play the skink, but I think it just ran in to the problem that most AA has in that it sucks at shooting down planes and so you use it as a cheap-spawn TD.

Ystervark and Bosvark absolutely slay planes and fit the 4.7 line up. Id drop the Bos for the skink for a change if it did not up rank me. I run both AA so I'd rather a different play style given the other two are samey.

People wanted the skink because there was a huge gap from the crusader aa to the falcon which I believe was 7.7 at the time. Skink was something to fill that gap.
But the br changes and now the south African aaas with Russian 23mms have made it irrelevant

Most of the request for the skink are from a time where britain had almost no SPAAs.
The reason why no one plays it and it seems “overhyped” is because it entered the game at 4.7, where it would slot in nicely to a great lineup. But then in a week they moved it to 5.0 for no reason, and since Britian doesn’t really have a good lineup again till like 7.3, that one increase to it’s BR made it effectively useless. A good AA with no lineup to fit in to.

I use the skink whenever I have a lineup that it fits into. I just don't play 5.3-7.7 Britain all that much. Whenever I do though, I use it.

even with the 40mm bofors i get assists. I dont know how aircraft like these can tank 40mm frag in the wings, tail and engine but they do it alot.
Honestly, the Skink does not look half bad, at least in principle. Quick-firing quad AA that has a closed top and all-around armor. Compare this to the USA's AA halftracks or the open-top Wirbelwind/Ostwind or whatever garbage other nations are fielding, and this one seems way more viable.
We wanted the skink as a counter to the Worldwind at 3.7 BR US not Britain at 5.0 that is really what killed it
I feel like yhe skink should have gone into yhe american tech tree because Britain already has some pretty good choises for spaa vehicals already in game and it could probably help with the bridge between the halftracks and the 40mm aa vehicals

The Skink is a pretty good AA. Of course, by nature of its armament and BR, it's not going to be an extremely effective TD, which as you yourself say in the video is how you normally end up playing SPAA. So, it would follow that it may not make the best impression. This is not the reason the player base doesn't use the vehicle. The reason you don't see it used is because the vehicle itself is misplaced. No matter what anyone says or argues about where it may or may not technically belong, it both has a place precedent and necessity wise in the US tree. But, in Gaijin's infinite wisdom, they put it in the British tree instead. A tech tree that is by no means hurting for strong SPAA. This was the one real easy homerun draft pick for a good and usable mid-tier US SPAA, and Gaijin whiffed by a country mile. US ground players continue to be persecuted by CAS :(

Because the cannons need to be reloaded individually take the time it takes to reload, decide by 4, and include the time to chamber a round and ready every individual 20mm, wouldn’t it take like 15 seconds? And that’s like 3.7 seconds for retrieving and chambering a 20mm heavy machine gun.

Like irl, the skink was added too late. Back then, when the game was more “realistic”, the only thing Britain had for SPAA between 2.0br and 6.7br was a crusader which had the same turret and weapon of the 2.0br SPAA and a crusader with 1 bofors. Now, you have to grind out two nonsense South African Cold War SPAAs to get it. One of it them having better armaments than the skink
Well in term of why people were asking and begging...just look at German SPAA killing tanks left and right.
With how the game changed, this thing is a good to have SPAA against planes from just deleting your crew in an instant.
They of course brought in the Skink after the nerfs.

The addition of the Skink is what prompted me to start grinding Britain after unlocking all the German vehicles. Been enjoying it (and the tree) a surprising amount.
Well. It would be more enjoyable if aphe had a chance to instakill on penetration- not guarantee like it has now.
You know, people have asked for the Sturmtiger since WT started off. While i wont be playing it (quit WT in 2016), i think its addition didnt change much either. Its one of those "would be cool to have one" vehicles that people will quickly get bored with. Same goes for the Skink.

I wonder when the US will get a decent mid tier AAA. The British seems to be getting a lot of attention in that part the past year with 3 decent AAA vehicles (skink and the gun trucks). Meanwhile the US is stuck with the m16 as the only good reliable AA until the york.

Gaijin added it like 4-5 years too late. Same way with the tech tree B-26 that should have been added back in like 2015.
British players wanted the Skink to have a WW2 AA that wasnt easy to yeet from strafing , people were hyped 4.7 was a gloruosly British Line up for it to fit in , 1 week and Gaijin put it at 5.0 effectivly killing it , you never want to Up tier british tanks so this would have to go into a 5.7 line up and far more planes at that point have cannons capable of penning you and tanks have far more armour
also UK 5.7 is horrendesly un-fun 90% ofd the time

In real life, closed AA vehicles would have performed horribly in this role due to the lack of good surround visibility. They would have ended up as ground support vehicles, in fact, which they did.
I like the Skink. It's not great in the anti-tank role (but it's just like the 20mm Crusader AA in that regard), but I find it pretty good at shredding planes.
After falcon got nerf to 8.0 - uk don't have aa for 1gen jets and gjn just add trash truks and ww2 skink..

If they put it in the US tree, you'd see a sharp uptick in Stinks. The fact it's in the English tree means that everyone who *is* playing it, is just playing it to get to the Falcon so they can melt Tigers and drink their tears.
