The American HSTV-L light tank is probably the most controversial tank in War Thunder ground forces. It's a vehicle that I'm infamous for talking about a ton, so I figured I would play it again now that it's gone up to a battle rating of 11.0 without any historical reports being actioned. I've been communicating with Gaijin about buffing XM885, but it's been sporadic.

The hstv-l is a great example of gaijin bias. Hstv-l sits at 11.0 with a penetration of 269 with 26 rounds while the 2s38 sits at 9.7 penetration of 221 with 148 rounds, proximity rounds, and irst tracking.
Better thermals too
It's premium bias.. if it was German or American it would have had a similar treatment (like the turm 3, it's pretty nasty at 8.0). idk how the 2s is still at that br tho like fr
@@Horizon_333 As its 50$. Premium bias is SUPER real, and this is the latest case. I still remember when the GR.1 was 9.7 or the Sea Hawk Mk.100 down there at 8.0 with A2A missiles
premium bias, half the premiums sit at 9.7 so if it was 11.0 that would require it to not be premium or sm
But slower with worse protection and worse depression. (Though it still deserves to go up, and before any of you say that I'm a wallet warrior who doesn't want it to go because I want to be op, I don't own it) also side note I love how everyone cries saying russia is op while Sweden and other nations have blatantly overpowered premiums such as the cv90105, you all need to quit your hypocrisy.

I mean, I always bounce the front plate of the HSTV-L with the 125mm guns, I hate that thing, it's true that the 2S38 should be higher but the HSTV-L is slightly better considering it's angled armor, low profile and better speed
That bit about the devs going "Well we think" despite evidence to the contrary seems a theme with most people I know talking about their own experience bug reporting.
Supposedly a similiar bit about MANPADs with them saying they can't be that agile because they're smaller than Sidewinders and other missiles. Per example.

Reminds me of sherman smoke launchers... It's been 7? years now?
There have been tons and tons and TONS of bug reports. stating that at the very least all 76mm m4a2 and m4a3 variants should have smoke launchers. (and arguably, all except maybe the m4a1 variant? but I might be mistaken on that) Yet with the exception of a few specific cases, no shermans have smoke launchers. Despite all the documented proof that was given to gaijin. And it's not even like they're saying it's inaccurate or something. No from all the reports I've seen gaijin just intentionally ignores them. Like outright not replying to it not marking it as not a bug/looked into etc. Just literally ignoring it.
Meanwhile a poorly sourced report comes in about supposedly the m4a3 76 having a significantly slower turret traverse? less than a month after it was a posted it was included in the patch that followed.
And this was while they were also still ignoring all the bug reports about the m4a3 having 500 hp instead of 450. So yea. Thanks gaijin.

Honestly is it shocking that people end up getting so frustrated that they leak classified materials on the forums when the Devs are like this? Its entirely a self made problem and will one day end up getting Gaijin in serious hot water unless they actually start listening to declassified materials and give no reason to post classified documents.

Shots 6-9: Missed due to recoil (bad spray control).
Shots 10-11: Very close, but recoil and inaccuracy make these reasonable misses.

The physics around destructible objects is wild. You’ll see videos of tanks going over cars with barely an issue (losing 5-10kmh of speed) and then when you do it in the same tank you lose half if not more of your speed
Lose all your speed, break your tracks and somehow kill your commander
It really depends on the mass of the tank.
Also, I'm fairly sure you only ever lose track condition hitting non-destructible objects.
Seems like some mundane items/terrain have been left coded as indestructible. I've seen a 50ton MBT blocked by a wooden table.
Dont forget about Japanese concrete fence on Japan map, it's still indestructible as always (unless you run it over, cuz it literally eats rounds for breakfast)
Don't even get me started about the trees with 9 lives 🥲. I shot a tree too many times with m82 and it just kept popping back up!
Honestly, your XM885 Rant section basically proves the whole reason why so many classified documents keep on getting leaked... Frankly, I'm going to start blaming the developers if it happens again, since it is pretty ridiculous that they won't listen to legal and practical research, causing people to go to such lengths...
My thoughts exactly. No wonder people keep doing it, because that’s effectively what they’re being asked to provide as proof/evidence, even though they’ve already cited all open source documentation which the snail says “no, not good enough” to.
People need to understand that no matter how much proof you provide it's never enough for the greedy thickheaded suits at Gaijin.

If you told me WT was a PsyOp to leak classified military documents to a 3rd Party via Whistleblower anonymity regularly to do an entire intelligence agency's department job passively by "encouraging" only 100% factual/actual information to feed to your government handler.. OK here's what I don't get: Gaijin gaslights the playerbase into thinking it needs classified documents for bug reports, like the exact dimensions of the penetrator like you mentioned, and then acts surprised when the playerbase leaks classified documents....
Like they literally ask for it. Maybe if they actually listened to players and didn't require you to sneak into the Pentagon for bug reports THIS WOULDN'T HAPPEN!
Also when it comes to Russian tanks some light whining gets their soft stats buffed. Like T-80 being quiet and most of them having carousel ammo that rarely detonates.

I believe gaijin is secretly a intelligence agency funded by the russian government. they know there is going to be weirdos that get triggered by pixel tanks and are willing give away their actual freedom and years of their life to change a number on a screen.
I agree that this is not a bad tank. However the thing is that even when you are on the top of the skill celling - your performance would be still HEAVILY dependent on random.
Current state XM885 should mean "inconsistancy" in any language around the world. You simply cannot rely on it. One time it will one-shot BVM at 1000 meters other time it won't set off the ammo that was directly hit from 50 meters. Every shot is like rolling a dice.

I play top tier US quite often and I must say that I relegated the HSTV-L to one of my last spawns, it's just so painfully inconsistent having to hit sometimes multiple times a single crew member, or just not penetrating at all breech areas or common weakspots due to the anemic shell, extremely painful.
I love how you're slowly creeping closer and closer to meme thunder channels while still maintaining this level headed educational information delivery from you're old videos.
I just gotta mention it. I ALWAYS wait eagerly for your videos. You put them online around my dinner time and I love just watching them when eating so much that I sometimes wait a bit just in case or keep videos unwatched for a while so I can get food. You should play the Italian M41M 90/53. Weird chassis but the gun is simply a joy to shoot.

They are louder but higher pitched, which I believe means the sound doesn't travel as well.
Spookston, I may be damned by almost every other viewer of yours, but I really enjoyed listening your rant-monologue about hstvl round. Would like to hear more in this kind of style of live gaming and semi discussion with proofs and suggestions, imo, actually pretty chill, thank you!

2S38 is 9.7 and isn't just a fast firing light tank, it's also an AA with a 57mm proxy shell and IRST
Yet they have the gual to make the HSTVL 11.0. 9 times out of 10, the 2s38 will kill you if you see each other at the same time.

hstvl is much faster, better armored, better gun depression. hstvl should be 10.3. 2s38 it's ok on 9.7. And US has proxy AA on 9.0. so what?
@TankistRazumist Typical vatnik apologist. Let's go point by point. The HSTVL is faster, but it's only by 10kmh. This is not a wide enough gap in performance to warrant a BR gap you are describing. The argument of armor is honesty hilarious considering just how little this matters when facing 600 mm pen kinetic rounds and HEAT warheads with pen in the 800 to 900 mm range. The HSTVL needs a buff, not a downtier. It had anti aircraft capabilites and it needs its faster reload that it does not have in the game. XM855 is also underperforming by quite a bit. Its pen is about 100 less than it should be(there's multiple documents saying it has similar penetration to M774), and its spalling is laughable, to say the least. The 2s38 with it's gen 3 thermals and IRST helicopter and jet deleting capability should be at 10.0 or 10.3. The M3A3 Bradley and Puma should also be buffed and moved up to a similar BR. As for the BMP-2M, it should 10.0, no buff needed.
Lastly, you alluded to the Sargent York. This is a decent AA system, but severely lacks the flexibility of the 2S38 fucking miles.

I think 10.7 would be a good battle rating for it a lineup with the m1a1 and ipm1 and pretty constant down tiers thanks to the turms and Leo 2a4

When I was in the 2nd Cav (Mid 1980s) we had the Dualtex cammo. I appreciate seeing it now and then in game.
Yeah thats what got me out of top tier battles. You shoot russian breeches, they dont receive any damage, you shoot their guns, volumetric says otherwise. But the thing that definitely upsets me the most is the era. Totally unpredictable, making it unfair. I had kontakt1 eat m829a2 from my abrams, from a flat side shot. This is such an outrageous thing that I was forced to leave toptier for good.
Can we please talk about the turret ring on the HSTVL? It seems like every round I survive, which is unlikely to begin with, my turret ring is destroyed. This means that I will most likely die on the second shot.

It’s a 10.7 tank. Yet, so is the 2S38. Spalling needs to be changed for cannons using APFSDS that are 60mm to 90mm, since it is nonexistent.
Just wanna point out that the tank at 14:38 had the turret facing completely perpendicular to you but somehow when it fired it still hit

the HSTV-L, from what i can tell from how i and many other play it, and it's overall characteristics, it is an incredible Ambush Vehicle. it is relatively low in height, and thus can be effectively used to basically hide in a Ditch and then open fire on multiple vehicles once thye have passed. use it for Ambushes and Scouting, or to kill crippled targets quickly to help alleviate the focus on a singular target for your team, and you WILL do well almost every match as long as the entire Team isnt AFK.
I recently got and spaded the HSTV-L it was a bit of a pain because the round is so awful. Btw Spookston i love your videos and the way you format them i also genuinly find youre voice rather calm. Keep up the great work!

i love how in gaijin’s mind the core of apfsds ammunition scales with the caliber even tho it doesn’t since for the most part when it comes to low caliber apfsds their cores are the same size the only thing that changes from round to round is the casing and maybe rod length but the diameter stays relatively the same.

if you're an HSTVL fan, check out the original 1980s G.I. Joe series, the Mauler MBT that the joes use in their fight against Cobra is a laser HSTVL. they also made a 3-3/4 inch figure scale toy HSTVL that was motorized and awesome, in 1985.
I kinda want to watch you take out the type 10 and TKX since it alleviates that reload and pen trouble that the HSTV-L has but with a 120mm instead of a 75mm.
Hearing you rant about the HSTV-L is very reminiscent of my own rantings about the old Hover Mode or upcoming Master Modes in Star Citizen
what I've noticed about apfsds and russian top tier tank breaches is that apfsds does NOT like to go through even if you are using very good apfsds but when it comes to heatfs it goes right through and takes the breach

I agree and also find one of the big ballance issues is skill ceiling and skill floor where stuff like the sherman with its stabilizer but lower pen/armor/maneuverability than other stuff at its tier such as pz 4's (pen) and t34's (hull armor and maneuverability) it has a higher skill floor cause you have to aim harder to penetrate but also a high ceiling because of the stabiliaer reaction time
I think an underrated aspect of the HSTV-L is that it FEELS good to play. Even stock as mine is, I have a blast playing it because it handles nicely. Until I actually start shooting things that is. Then it becomes a chore.

The HSTV-L was a remarkably small and light vehicle. The hull was roughly 19.38 feet (5.91 meters) in length, 9.15 feet (2.79 meters) in width, and the vehicle was 7.91 feet (2.41 meters) tall. With applique armor installed, the HSTV-L weighed 22 US tons (19.95 tonnes). The HSTV-L’s upper front plate was angled at 80 degrees. It was believed that this extreme angle, in conjunction with the HSTV-L’s special applique armor, would protect it from 115 mm rounds used by the Soviet T-62

I really appreciated the Surfin bird edit in and out... I had to go back and make sure that wasn't my own brain adding that in
3:42 about the drivers hatch, there's been a bug for about a month now where APFSDS just doesn't ricochet no matter the angle, which has been fixed just today. So it's probably not that feasible anymore. Noticeably affected the Abrams UFP as well.
I know you've said you're not into academics, but your devotion to researching something as mundane as the characteristics of a dart on a prototype test bed that never got anywhere near production... and then writing multiple lengthy documents presenting compiled evidence with unique conclusions, you're basically doing the same work that a graduate student in a history program is doing at any notable graduate research university in the US. It's impressive.
