- Welcome to More Christ. We seek to bring some of the world's most interesting and insightful guests to discuss life's central and abiding questions.
In this seventy ninth episode in a series of discussions, I'm joined by Dr Martin Shaw.
Martin is regarded as one of the most outstanding new teachers of the mythic imagination. Visiting fellow at Schumacher college in the U.K., he has also devised and lead the Oral Tradition course at Stanford university in the U.S.
He is the author of the award winning; A Branch from The Lightning Tree, Snowy Tower, Scatterlings, Smoke Hole, and other classics. Martin now leads a bustling schedule of conferences, gatherings, and wilderness retreats over several continents. One I want to mention, will involve Martin and Paul Kingsnorth at Benburb Priory in November. A few day tickets remain, and you can still join us for an evening talk on Saturday 26th November:

Man, this interview was excellent. I’ve never heard of Martin Shaw before. I feel that I’m about to enter into a whole new world! Thanks for having him on!
That's wonderful, thanks for sharing! You're welcome and I hope you enjoy the ride with Martin Shaw! I'd also recommend the likes of his friend, Malcolm Guite.
Beautiful. “I haven’t become a Christian. I’ve just realised that I am a Christian.”
“God uses everything. I felt in His presence for a very long time. I have to be honest.”
Thank you both so very much from an old (wild) Anglican brother… An English (Thanetian) poet/painter living out his days in exile in rural Mexico…
I am very grateful to you both - and to the Lord for bringing you into range of my aeolian harp as I sit here smiling!
Noblesse oblige, indeed… Quite right.
I’ve been waiting to hear these words elucidate my higher dreams for… centuries!
God Bless you two.
A myth is not a story of something that never happened, but a story of something that never *stops* happening.
Very interesting. Martin should talk to Jonathan Pageau!
Thank you. Funny, we just recorded a discussion yesterday, which I look forward to releasing this month!
I love the phrase "the luminous present" reminds me of RH Thomas's poem The Bright Field
"Life is not hurrying on to a receding future,
nor hankering after an imagined past.
It is the turning aside like Moses to the miracle
of the lit bush, to a brightness
that seemed as transitory as your youth
once, but is the eternity that awaits you."
I’m so interested in these new Christian thinkers, I had an experience of conversion very similar to this…helped along the way by Pageau…really resonate with Martin Shaw…I’m attending an Orthodox Church also…
I'm captivated by this orientation as well, Anna. It feels like hearing what I've searched for a long time, and thought I'd say so to you since we share a family name
Martin definitely brought a fresh angle to our stale banalities of life in modernity - and now he promises to do the same to the sacred pilgrimage with and to Yeshua. I am so glad he decided he must make this journey that is full of exciting new challenges that he won't shy away from. I look forward to bumping into him every now and again along the road.....Thank you Brothers!
Beautiful! Thank you. :)
This is a wonderful conversation. God does indeed use everything - nothing is wasted.
Thanks for that conversation. I enjoy singing English folk songs, and playing English/Irish/Scots tunes, and there's a wealth of story and tradition there, too. Whilst at times it's explicitly Christian, I've never wanted to let go of the more pagan or 'everyday' elements because I hold them dear, and it's interesting to consider that those traditional songs and themes may speak into the Trinity in some way. It's something to ponder on.
I agree so much….it’s so encouraging to find the connections. Xx ❤️❤️
Great, rich conversation, thanks so much! A cradle Catholic, I fell away, took drugs, was saved, explored many paths, and was part of a Sufi Community, but always with Christ in my core. I struggled to meld my connection to nature and stories and magic with the structure of the Church. I find that Liturgy, language and beauty are such a vital part of the old Faith that calls and guides me home! I could listen to hours of this conversation….🙏🌿🍃🍂🌻🍂🍃⭐️🌿⭐️⭐️✨✨✨
Well, that was astonishing. I can't help but say that he speaks my language, and sees as I see. His words felt so utterly familiar.
love to see him big up the LOTR movies ;)
I’m an early subscriber, living in Cork. You’re going great. I love you’re style of interviewing. You’re incredibly encouraging and a keen listener.
Thank you.
Thank you, Ciaran! I appreciate your kind words... Up the rebels. I used to live near Cobh. Cork's a beautiful place, rich in history. It's a long drive, I know, but hopefully you'll be able to join us for some in-person events at Benburb Priory. God bless!
Brilliant conversation! Looking forward to your next one
Thank you! 🙏 I look forward to hearing what you think! 😁
Super encouraging convo 🙏. I’ve just signed up for the evening in November 👍
A challenging thought starting at 40 min. Keep the weird.✨
A lovely conversation. Thanks for making it happen!
This is fantastic!
“How do we make church more like Camelot?” Woah, Martin’s speaking to me
"Pinpricks of the eternal." What a wonderful expression. "How do we make church more like Camelot?" "We need the weird again.." Mind-blowing stuff.
Great conversation. New to your channel, following Martin's trail. He didn't mention his substack - well worth it. And now more exploring of your channel ahead of me which I see is also a podcast, what a delight.
Thank you! That's great. I hope you find some of our conversations worthwhile. I'll also recommend that others check out Martin's substack, on your prompting: martinshaw.substack.com/
Great beard game.
Great
..
...okay fine I'll listen to the video too!
Haha maybe that's where he gets his wisdom- Pageau, Vander Klay, Shaw... I'm noticing a pattern!
I like this dude.
I love that picture. Anyone have any idea where I could get that print?
When's the conversation with Shaw, Pageau, Kotar and Kingsnorth?
I don't know much about Kotar but hope to bring the other three together next year, God willing. I have a few online conversations with them coming up in different matches, also.
Where did you get your introduction music from? I like the a cappella nature of it.
Nyazura Mission Church Choir: Praise Him. (I am going there)
The best film version of the gospel is Pasolini's Gospel according to Matthew. He really captures the wild, unpredictable, challenging nature of Jesus. No "gentle Jesus meek and mild" there!
What is that song at the beginning?
It's in the 'about' section.
