In defense of the Purple Piranha Plant, its pot looks golden. Combine that with the purple, and we might just have here a Waluigi reference, which might just mean Piranha Plant is just Waluigi disguising as a Piranha Plant in order to enter Smash without anyone noticing. Orange is Kaori, the poster child for S1 Blue is John, the other S1 poster child Yellow is Kaori in her uniform as Agent 3 (if you don't change any settings in the later games, Kaori is 3 by default) Pink is Laura, another S1 promo character. I love her shes pretty Cyan... Isn't actually Specs. It's Rui, another S1 promo character who takes a backseat to Kaori and John like Laura does. Specs is based on Rui, but they're not identical. Yellow-Green is from the manga, though, and is a combination of the characters Skull and Rider. (Skull's gear, Rider's colour.) Purple is an unnamed character wearing the school uniform amiibo gear. Dark blue is the only one that i genuinely cannot find a reference for, but its possible he's (very) loosely based on Pit, a fifth member of the group Kaori, John, Laura and Rui belong to. Pit wears a rugby helmet, though, and is generally cyan in colour, so it's a very loose connection.

Honestly I think the more basic palette swaps tend to look better from an aesthetic standpoint than the ones that try to retrofit specific references onto the characters' design. Shulk's alts reference other characters but I think they all look like vomit for example. Of course, the worst cases are when a character's alts are barely distinguishable from one another, as with Cloud and Pac-Man.
I agree! An alt doesn’t always need to be distinct to just be visually appealing. Lucario’s alt which is a darker shade of the main colors is my favorite for that reason!

To be honest, Byleth's 7th and 8th alts would have been way better if they were wearing either their "Enlightened One" attire or a colour swap resembling it.

I like the green Sephiroth alt. It's based on the color scheme of the Midgar Zolom (which is that giant snake at the start of the game) since it actually has a good connection to Sephiroth, based on an iconic scene featuring the Midgar Zolom which I'll spoil below if you're curious, but I'd recommend playing the game blind. The Midgar Zolom is a giant snake in the waters outside Midgar after you first enter the main overworld. If notoriously really powerful as an enemy early game, and is essentially unkillable early game and its unique magic spell will kill everyone in your party instantly, and the intended way to get through that section is to either breed a chocobo and run past that section because it's that unkillable. And then after you finally get past the waters with Midgar Zoloms, you see a Midgar Zolom dead on a giant pointed rock and Cloud says "Did Sephiroth do this?" (Answer: yes). This is before you see Sephiroth for the first time and you've only heard of him and seen what he's done and your party couldn't do anything to the Midgar Zolom but Sephiroth was able to kill one brutally without any effort. It's an amazing way to continuously sell the power of Sephiroth before you ever see him once

I find it funny that Kirby has a better GameBoy alt in Kirby: Squeak Squad (often regarded as a bottom 3 game in the series and not even developed by Nintendo or HAL) than in any of the Smash games. In case you’re curious, everything changed to be grayscale while using it.
As a HUGE Kingdom Hearts fan, I definitely agree that Timeless River is his best alt. It's a really nice reference, and a very surprising one to see included, given how close it is to Mickey Mouse and old school Disney. Not to mention it has unique facial expressions and is one of the more unique costumes in Ultimate. I also really like his KH3 outfit, as I think it's the right balance of red and black and all in all just looks really good on him. If I had to really get technical and nerdy when picking the worst, it would be his blue alternate based on his Wisdom Form in his 7th costume. Simply because of the fact that it's an incorrect reference. Wisdom Form is a form he has in Kingdom Hearts 2. Yet in Smash he has the Wisdom Form recolor for his Dream Drop Distance outfit, even though he never uses Wisdom Form in that game or with that outfit. So while it is a reference, it's not actually a correct one as they have it on the wrong outfit. Sorry to get super nerdy. Great video!
I think Wisdom form and his Dream Drop Distance alts should have been nixed entirely. I don’t get DDD being there as it’s the only non-mainline game that’s referenced, and not even one of the more (dearly) beloved in the franchise from what I’ve seen. Not to say I don’t like the game though, it’s fantastic. I’d replace DDD Sora with Roxas, but getting one KH character in was already hard enough so let’s say that’s impossible, I’d replace DDD with Sora’s costume from Halloween Town, and Wisdom Form with anti-Sora. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m still very happy with the lineup we got either way.
I’m just saying I think the references for Valor Form and Wisdom Form are supposed to be nods to Goofy and Donald since you need Goofy to go into Valor and Donald to go into Wisdom although I would’ve liked Shadow Sora / Anti Form / Rage Form or Roxas alt lol
For Sonic, they really should have had a black with red details to reference Shadow more accurately, yellow with white details to reference Tails, red with white details to reference Knuckles, silver with white and cyan details to reference Silver, pink to reference Amy, beige with orange details to reference Cream, purple with white and red details to reference Blaze. There's 7 alts with hopefully distinct colours. The details should also match the character it's based on.
Honestly given how Sonic's moveset is mostly taken from Sonic the Fighters, surprised Black isn't just greyscaled to reference the P2 color Sonic has in StF
Greninja's purple and green alt does have a potential reference; it's arguably based on the purple Kecleon from Mystery Dungeon. Which would make it one of the only references to PMD in all of Smash, so I respect it.
Peach’s gold dress costume is a reference to Gold Peach from “SUPER MARIO PARTY”, replacing Peach’s Daisy alternate costume altogether, since Daisy is now Peach’s echo fighter in SBBU.

Even thought the colours don’t work great on him, I thin Byleth’s Dimitri Alt deserves an honourable mention, one because Dimitri is the best character, and 2 because that alt actually changes the colour of Byleth’s belt knife to the same colour as the one Dimitri gave Edelgard, unknowingly starting the whole conflict of the game. I think that’s pretty cool.
Nintendo did great making alternates for ultimate, but I hope next game there are 10 alternates for each. Like a SMS dark/ painted Mario and the endless Minecraft possibilities would be cool.

The ‘worst’ costumes you were wrong about: Fox, Luigi, Capt. Falcon, Bowser, Mewtwo, Pit, Diddy, Toon Link, Greninja, Palutena, Bowser Jr., Inkling, Joker, and Byleth, but that’s just my opinion.
Luigi's purple alt is the biggest slap in the face for me. They removed the yellow L so we wouldnt even be able to pretend it was a Waluigi reference anymore.
The main reason why Hero is called "Hero" throughout all of the announcer calls is that they don't have official-official names. Erdrick is a title given to legendary heroes. Eight literally has nothing. Luminary is a title. The only one between the 4 with an "official" name is Solo. Solo is the default name of the male Hero in Dragon Quest IV, whilst Sofia is the default for if you choose to be female. It makes sense to call them all "Hero" as they don't really have a name. They just have titles.. or *the number of their placement in the series.*
It's pretty much universal amongst all protagonists of Dragon Quest to be referred as the Hero at this point. (And everyone ignores the fact that the DQIII Hero is named Arusu but nobody calls him that)

I believe the costume for Toon Link you called the worst is more in reference to Link’s Awakening instead. The color and hair matches the puppet used in the Japanese commercial much better.
Considering cloud wore _bright purple_ in the actual PS1 game and _vibrant blue_ in Final Fantasy Tactics, just having those be variants of his default color scheme as two available costumes would have helped considerably. A bright red version of his Advent Children look as a reference to the Red Mage/Scholar classes would have also been tremendous, but I have a strong Red Mage bias so there's that.

I agree with the yoshi segment, i miss black :( For gnw, the yellow and light blue (Alts 3 and 6) are based on the gameboy and gameboy light respectively. Alt 5 should be replaced with pink and Alt 7 green alt should be brightened up like how it is in melee/brawl, as on some stages it looks too similar to his default. These two changes alone would make his costume selection SUBSTANTIALLY better.
Here’s what I think: I’ve been a Sonic main since Brawl came out. Sonic is awesome! But I do agree with you about the fact that they were a bit lazy with some of Sonic’s color skins. Except for the black skin that is suppose to be a reference to Dark Sonic from Sonic X. The other skin of him with his blue shoes and glowing aqua bracelets are suppose to be based on the Crystal Ring in Sonic Adventure 1. And his magenta colored wrists and shoes are suppose to be a reference to Nights. Overall, lazy choices, and I’m always going to stick with his default costume anyway. They could have added his skin with the SOAP shoes, Extreme Gear goggles and Shoes, his Darkspine appearance in Secret Rings, or even his Boom skin or his Movie skin would’ve been better choices. If they were to add another Smash game, we should expect better color swaps like that of Sonic and not just his shoes. Overall, I still enjoy playing as Sonic in Smash.

Normal Link and bunny Link use the same set of colors (palette), which does not include a yellow-brown for Link's hair. This is because, with the pink for the bunny included, there isn't enough room in the palette for that extra color

For Pichu's, the sash on the ear could be a reference to a focus sash which allows a Pokemon to survive a hit with 1 HP.
And that makes sense for pichu seeing as everything either kills him or barely doesn’t

If notoriously really powerful as an enemy early game, and is essentially unkillable early game and its unique magic spell will kill everyone in your party instantly, and the intended way to get through that section is to either breed a chocobo and run past that section because it's that unkillable. And then after you finally get past the waters with Midgar Zoloms, you see a Midgar Zolom dead on a giant pointed rock and Cloud says "Did Sephiroth do this?" (Answer: yes). This is before you see Sephiroth for the first time and you've only heard of him and seen what he's done and your party couldn't do anything to the Midgar Zolom but Sephiroth was able to kill one brutally without any effort. It's an amazing way to continuously sell the power of Sephiroth before you ever see him once

As a HUGE Kingdom Hearts fan, I definitely agree that Timeless River is his best alt. It's a really nice reference, and a very surprising one to see included, given how close it is to Mickey Mouse and old school Disney. Not to mention it has unique facial expressions and is one of the more unique costumes in Ultimate. I also really like his KH3 outfit, as I think it's the right balance of red and black and all in all just looks really good on him.
If I had to really get technical and nerdy when picking the worst, it would be his blue alternate based on his Wisdom Form in his 7th costume. Simply because of the fact that it's an incorrect reference. Wisdom Form is a form he has in Kingdom Hearts 2. Yet in Smash he has the Wisdom Form recolor for his Dream Drop Distance outfit, even though he never uses Wisdom Form in that game or with that outfit. So while it is a reference, it's not actually a correct one as they have it on the wrong outfit.

I think Wisdom form and his Dream Drop Distance alts should have been nixed entirely. I don’t get DDD being there as it’s the only non-mainline game that’s referenced, and not even one of the more (dearly) beloved in the franchise from what I’ve seen. Not to say I don’t like the game though, it’s fantastic.
I’d replace DDD Sora with Roxas, but getting one KH character in was already hard enough so let’s say that’s impossible, I’d replace DDD with Sora’s costume from Halloween Town, and Wisdom Form with anti-Sora.
Don’t get me wrong though, I’m still very happy with the lineup we got either way.

For Sonic, they really should have had a black with red details to reference Shadow more accurately, yellow with white details to reference Tails, red with white details to reference Knuckles, silver with white and cyan details to reference Silver, pink to reference Amy, beige with orange details to reference Cream, purple with white and red details to reference Blaze. There's 7 alts with hopefully distinct colours. The details should also match the character it's based on.

Even thought the colours don’t work great on him, I thin Byleth’s Dimitri Alt deserves an honourable mention, one because Dimitri is the best character, and 2 because that alt actually changes the colour of Byleth’s belt knife to the same colour as the one Dimitri gave Edelgard, unknowingly starting the whole conflict of the game. The ‘worst’ costumes you were wrong about: Fox, Luigi, Capt. Falcon, Bowser, Mewtwo, Pit, Diddy, Toon Link, Greninja, Palutena, Bowser Jr., Inkling, Joker, and Byleth, but that’s just my opinion.
Luigi's purple alt is the biggest slap in the face for me. They removed the yellow L so we wouldnt even be able to pretend it was a Waluigi reference anymore.

To me, it seems to be a reference to the Mystery Dungeon series, while neither the player nor partner actually wore a scarf until Super Mystery Dungeon, the promotional artworks and title screens always feature the potential starters wearing scarves of varying colors depending on the species, and Pikachu in particular always wore a scarf in that shade of Red, though around the neck and not the ear.

I believe the costume for Toon Link you called the worst is more in reference to Link’s Awakening instead. The color and hair matches the puppet used in the Japanese commercial much better.
Considering cloud wore _bright purple_ in the actual PS1 game and _vibrant blue_ in Final Fantasy Tactics, just having those be variants of his default color scheme as two available costumes would have helped considerably. A bright red version of his Advent Children look as a reference to the Red Mage/Scholar classes would have also been tremendous, but I have a strong Red Mage bias so there's that.

For gnw, the yellow and light blue (Alts 3 and 6) are based on the gameboy and gameboy light respectively. Alt 5 should be replaced with pink and Alt 7 green alt should be brightened up like how it is in melee/brawl, as on some stages it looks too similar to his default. These two changes alone would make his costume selection SUBSTANTIALLY better.
Here’s what I think:
I’ve been a Sonic main since Brawl came out. Sonic is awesome! But I do agree with you about the fact that they were a bit lazy with some of Sonic’s color skins. Except for the black skin that is suppose to be a reference to Dark Sonic from Sonic X. The other skin of him with his blue shoes and glowing aqua bracelets are suppose to be based on the Crystal Ring in Sonic Adventure 1. And his magenta colored wrists and shoes are suppose to be a reference to Nights.
Overall, lazy choices, and I’m always going to stick with his default costume anyway.
They could have added his skin with the SOAP shoes, Extreme Gear goggles and Shoes, his Darkspine appearance in Secret Rings, or even his Boom skin or his Movie skin would’ve been better choices. If they were to add another Smash game, we should expect better color swaps like that of Sonic and not just his shoes. Overall, I still enjoy playing as Sonic in Smash.

Green alt is a reference to tiki, another manakete. It's the same shade of green used on her dragon form and has a red cape like her red clothes. It's also just a nice shade of green.

I believe that the Toon Link costume at 21:23 is actually based off of "A Link Between Worlds" where Link has his normal hair.
Link had blonde hair in ALTTP, as evidenced by the manual and promotional art. I din’t exactly know why is hair is pink in game though.

Normal Link and bunny Link use the same set of colors (palette), which does not include a yellow-brown for Link's hair.
