This song is from their map of the Soul series based on Jungian psychology and the concept of the Persona, Shadow, and Ego. They use the concept of the Black Swan in this song to represent the Shadow, which psychologist Carl Jung defines as all our fears, shortcomings and weaknesses that we try to suppress. Jung says we need to face the things about ourselves that we would rather not face in order to achieve enlightenment. Here BTS addresses their fear of losing their passion for music and becoming burned out. At the beginning of the video this shadow is huge and has a life of it’s own, but after facing this fear, at the end of the video Jungkook looks back as the shadow shrinks and disappears.

Good analysis. Few commenters get to the idea of Shadow elements leaking into consciousness and the resultant dissonance. ("Do your thang"), missing it in analyses of both Black Swan and On. Visually the art film version actually is a tad clearer with its portrayal of Jung's concept of individuation the value of which is the ultimate underlying message of both songs. But most certainly this version does allude somewhat cryptically to the role of Shadow elements within consciousness.

You're spot on with the fear about losing their passion for music. Black Swan is inspired by a quote by famous choreographer Martha Graham: "A dancer dies twice, once when they stop dancing - and this first death is the more painful one."
I'm glad you watched until the very end because the disappearing shadow is part of the point: At first the shadow/fear towers over them and overwhelms them, in the middle they reach out and try to connect with it and they're the same size and then finally they accept that the fear is a part of who they are, hence so is the shadow. (They just love putting important details like that at the end of their mvs. 😅)

I know, so many reactors never seem to understand the meaning of the song; and he is only the second person I've seen to get it this fast. Wich is strange, because Yoongi and Namjoon literally spell it out for you. But some of the things people say they think the song means is just.. It's like " Were you even watching this MV, because... Wow". So it is so nice to see someone, not only watching the MV, but paying attention to it. And understanding it.
      So thank you. Borahae 💜

Fun fact! Another definition of Black Swan means: A black swan is an unpredictable event that is beyond what is normally expected of a situation
They dropped this MV out of absolutely NOWHERE. They always release a comeback map when a new album drops where it lists what content is going to be released on what day. But this MV was not on the map of ever mentioned. I thought that was a pretty nifty thing.

  • @alex__andrei
    @alex__andrei 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

This song is based on the quote by world-renowned choreographer/dancer Martha Graham. She said: “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful” This quote basically potrays the whole meaning of the song: losing the passion for creating or doing what one loves. In BTS’s case, losing the passion for (creating) music.
This song is part of the Map of the Soul: 7 album which is mostly divided into 3 parts based on Carl Jung’s philosophy: Persona, Shadow and Ego (this song being part of the Shadow part)
Also, the filming took place in the Los Angeles Theatre
You were spot on with your interpretation! 💜

This song definitely explains the fear of falling out of love with their music and music in general. Others have mentioned the theme of them fearing and not wanting their first death (the time they can’t dance , or in other words, can’t do what they love anymore maybe because they can’t in the future physically or because they don’t enjoy it anymore).
In my view it’s like a burn out. Loving something so much, working too much for too long at it that it begins to feel like a chore and a job rather than a love. And this is them explaining how they felt this. But then they realised they love music too much and snap out of it. But they still fear the time they may not be able to get out of the burn out.

“Black Swan” is inspired by a quote: “A dancer dies twice. The first time is when he stops dancing and this first death is much more painful”. “Black swan” is about their fear that some day they’ll lose their passion for music and this would be their first death.
They chose to use autotune in this song was to show the group's shadow (they're deepest collective fears/secrets) vocally, the fear being that they would fall out of love with their craft. It was RMs idea to use the autotune to blend their voices, (which makes sense since he adores Kanye and Kanye uses autotune on his vocals). Black swan is based on Jung's work of the map of the soul where the shadow, ego and persona (and more) are all equally important parts to a person's construct. The dance moves in particular you can see in the beginning they pluck what seems to be invisible string instruments, while at the end of the choreography they seem to be hanging by those very strings like puppets. Their shadow (fear/secret) has consumed them.
Ok, so... the song draws inspiration from both the ballet (Swan Lake) in it's choreo and imagery, but also draws a lot of inspiration from the movie "Black Swan", which in turn is heavily based on the Japanese anime film "Perfect Blue". Both movies break identity and deal (in a non-obvious way) with Carl Jung's theory of the self: Persona, Ego, Shadow. In these movies, a female performer spirals into insanity as increased pressures in her career cause her to lose grip of herself and reality. “Black Swan” tells the story of Nina, a passionate ballerina (Natalie Portman) who struggles to maintain her sanity while competing for the main role (the White Swan, Odette) in “Swan Lake.” Meanwhile, “Perfect Blue” follows Mima, a former (Japanese) pop idol whose sense of reality begins to waiver as she attempts to transition into a career as a serious actress. Both stories feature a female protagonist is put in highly stressful situations and that makes them question their identity and ultimately conjure up a doppelganger that messes with their psyche (persona, shadow and ego, basically clash). Just as Nina suffers from the pressures of being a ballerina, Mima is also forced to deal with the strict expectations of being a Japanese idol. Their personal conflicts also bleed into their professional lives causing them to spiral out of control. In Nina’s case, it comes in the form of her oppressive mother and in Mima’s situation, it’s an obsessive stalker fan. At the core of the film, both protagonists have a psychological battle with themselves that results in hallucinations that blurs the lines between fiction and reality. In the end, like I said, these films break the self and deal with themes like loss of passion and the heartbreak that come with working for your dreams. Black Swan (BTS), at its core, reflects these themes. I think that Perfect Blue can be chillingly on point for BTS, since they too are idols and experience some of the things that Mima experienced as an idol and continues to go through. BTS reflect the core concepts of these movies, identity, and conceptualise them to reflect their fear of losing their passion for music and, by extension, losing themselves. They portray people who are afraid that music is all there is to them and are afraid of losing themselves if they lose their passion.
And ohhhh boy, Jimin's dance haha he did train in ballet, albeit very minimally and as part of his main focus, which was contemporary and that's what he mostly trained for during high school. He is "professionally" trained in contemporary, hip-hop and idol dance. Even the members have said that Black Swan is Jimin's song, that he embodies the black swan. This is further highlighted in the 2020 MAMA version of Black Swan, where he does a duet with Jungkook! (here's the link for a breakdown of the moment twitter.com/mintynkks/status/1335236325373448192?s=20&t=2C90i3inGV9MBv5dgoiYQA Spoiler alert, since I dunno if you plan to react to the 2020MAMA performance. Which I HIGHLY recommend, it has an amazing performance of Dynamite as well). Anygays, Jimin's dance style is unique and probably near impossible to replicate since its highly influenced by his 8+ years experience in martial arts + hiphop training. +idol training + his contemporary (and minimal ballet and Korean traditional) training. He does a lot of tricking and aerials you could see with his medialuna (which is a very dangerous movement to do, because you can easily overrotate and injure your ankles) and with his movements here twitter.com/pjmgem/status/1466261374355402757?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA and here twitter.com/jikookheart/status/1465173437589110788?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA, during the live performance, where he basically does a one-handed cartwheel to cover more space. Black Swan is one of my favourite songs from BTS!

The famous dancer and creator of modern dance once said, “A dancer dies twice-once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.” What Martha Graham said with this quote resonates with me every day, with every waking moment. A dancer dies two times in her life-the day she actually dies and the day her passion for dance dies.
Is where the storyline for the movie Black Swan came from and what it inspired BTS to write this particular song.

Since you mistook they're filming location for a mansion perhaps you'd like to know the history of The Los Angeles Theater.
This Los Angeles Theatre was constructed in late 1930 and early 1931. It was commissioned by H.L. Gumbiner, an independent film exhibitor from Chicago,[3] who also built the nearby Tower Theatre.[4] Designed by S. Charles Lee,[5] and Samuel Tilden Norton, the theater features a French Baroque interior. With its grand central staircase and gold brocade drapes, it has for many years been considered to be among the city's most lavish landmarks.[6] The opulent interior is said to have been modeled after the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles.[7] A crystal fountain stands at the top of the grand staircase, a restaurant and a ballroom were on the lower level.[7] The theatre was built in less than six months. In August 1930 there was only an excavated hole in the ground, and in January 1931 the theatre had its grand opening. Lee speeded construction by having the plaster ornamentation fabricated off-site and then brought to the building and fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. Most other theatres of the day had their decorative plaster molded and finished in place, with artisans working on scaffolding [4] Charlie Chaplin helped fund the completion so that it would be ready to open with the premiere of his film City Lights in January 1931.[8][6] It was the last such movie palace built on Broadway, as the area began to feel the effects of the Depression and faced competition from Hollywood Blvd. as the "Great White Way of the West".[4] Attendance was strong through World War II, when many factory workers would see shows before and after their shifts. With the postwar suburbanization of Los Angeles, attendance declined throughout the later decades of the 20th century.
After closing its doors to the public in 1994, the Los Angeles has sat vacant for many years, although it can be rented as a venue for special events.[9] The theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Los Angeles is used most often today as a location for filming, and is frequently seen in commercials, television shows, and feature films. It has been featured in Funny Lady (1975); New York, New York (1977); Man on the Moon (1999); Charlie's Angels (2000) and its sequel, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003); The Lords of Salem (2012); the AMC series Mad Men; among many other films. The theatre was used in the back drop on the set of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and seen in the music video for "Safe and Sound (Capital Cities song)" (2013), "Shake It (Metro Station song)" (2008), "Jaded" by Aerosmith (2000), "Black Swan" by BTS (2020), and "2U" by Kang Daniel (2020). In 2004 the theatre housed the multi layered theatre production "Alma" (about Alma Mahler-Werfel) by Joshua Sobol, directed by Paulus Manker.
The theatre's façade and marquee design was used as the inspiration for that of the Hyperion Theatre at Disney California Adventure in Anaheim.

about backstory of Black Swan/ the meaning of the song. It is about losing the passion for what you love, in BTS' case that's music. There is the quote from dancer Martha Graham, that goes along with it: "A dancer dies twice, once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more. painful."(which appears on screen when the MV starts of black swan, orchestral version) On a press conference the BTS members said that Black Swan is very personal to them. *It is about confessing the fear of losing passion for music and describes the personal relationship artists have with their craft.* Black Swan was co-written by one of the rappers RM and their in-house producer Pdogg, who also produced the track. "Black Swan" is from the album series "Map of the Soul", which is inspired by the psychological theories of Carl Jung. BTS especially explores the persona, shadow, and ego aspects of the soul. "Black Swan" is one of the songs about their shadow, in this case, their fear of losing their passion for music. Another song, "Interlude: Shadow", talks about the dark side of ambition, success, and fame.
As we know, BTS write their own lyrics and base them on their personal experiences,(biggest reason for their success along with their deep meaningful songs & lyrics) their songs are often reflective of what they are going through in their lives...

Much of the musical and artistic work of BTS is conceptual, in this case Black Swan belongs to the album Map of the Soul 7 (Work on the archetypes of Carl Jung's psychology "Persona" "Shadow" and "Ego") In the case of Black Swan represents the "shadow" archetype (It is that side of our personality that the conscious self does not recognize as its own, because the "darkest" aspects are fears, jealousy, doubts, aggressiveness, even different cultural factors affect the formation of our "shadow" and of course our parents, educators, etc. Recognizing and integrating this aspect is the work of realizing who we are, how we react and face dogmas, and how we feel reality, a work of integration of duality. If you're interested, I'll pass you the link of the global conference for this album in which they talk about these aspects of their work.th-cam.com/video/_RT5eOGZ5gQ/w-d-xo.html Honestly, I really like your reactions- Thank you

Jimin is the shadow behind Suga as they are similar in height. Please react to Jimin Black Swan behind the scenes. He is a perfectionist. He is pure art and an amazing dancer too.

Losing the passion for doing music. There is a saying a dancer dies 2 deaths. The first being when they no longer dance .
    Great reaction.
