I love these repair video u help me save alot of money on simple repair. I need a oil change soon I'm thinking about trying that. I did my apu unit and service my espar d-2 heater. this my first year as owner operator learning so much.
A few tips to make life easier in the future. 1. Use a good long handle box wrench on the bolt. It will save your arm and reduce flex in the impact, which will break the bolt loose faster. 2. During reassembly put some anti seize compound on the non threaded part of the bolt only. These bolts seize up a lot in the shock, but you don’t want anti seize on the threads since excess vibration could loosen the nut. 3. Bolts this size can take up to 400 ft lbs of torque without damage. So unless you want to use a torque wrench and tighten them to 375 just use a decent 3/4 gun and don’t let the gun beat on it all day. You really want torque close to what it should be though to help vibration. Anyway good job and doing things yourself is how you learn.
Matt Moschkau I am no mechanic, but I think 400 pounds looks like too much for that bolt. 400 is close to the torque spec for wheels. Also, not all types of bolts even of that size can handle too much torque. This can cause the bolt to break when installing or removing.
The Reviewer Freightliner and other manufactures post service bulletins that includes torque specs on bolts. Suspension components vary from 350 to 550 ft lbs based on application and manufacture. Consult your trucks service bulletin for exact torque. There is also a handy guide available online that lists bolts torque rating by size and grade of bolt. These particular bolts will have no problem going well over 400 ft lbs.
Great video. The Monroe's may have a replacement warranty check your receipt. Wipe it down then take it in for a new one. Put some anti- seize compound on those bolts it'll help with corroded, and change out is easier. Thanks for putting the video out.
How about the guy doing the shocks, using a bit of copper grease on the bolts when reinstalling, makes things a whole lot easier when replacing in the future.
i did notice that when you took the old shock off that the spacer on the bottom was on the tire side but when you put the new shock on the spacer was to the frame sides am curious if there is a reason for that or if you didn't notice.on my 07 century if i put the spacer to the tire side the shock is crooked.good video man keep up the good work.

the shock itself has the#,if not when you go to the freightliner parts department just give them the vin# of your truck,they will give you what you need for your truck just with the vin#,but the shocks themselves have them on the very buttom of the shock,good luck and thanks for tunning in

Freightliners also seem to rarely carry two brands of the same part. They typically just carry one type. One would have to go to another Freighliner to get a different brand.
Jason Martin Monroe has a video where they say 200k to 250k. I have also read online that some fleets change them when they get a new set of tires. Monroe also says to inspect the shocks every 50k miles by compressing and extending the shock. It should feel smooth with no stops and have some resistance. Gas shocks should rise up when compressed.

But my steers I know I have to change them once a year. My first set of OEM shocks had about 450,000 mi on them. After that I had OEM shocks put on whenever I changed tires. except for when I had the Michelin XDN2's and I had to change them every two years.
humpty Hydraulic shocks don’t seem to be common in big trucks, or at least with Freightliner. Oil and gas shocks appear to be the norm. Gas shocks also appear to be gaining some popularity because they supposedly ride smoother than oil shocks. The downside is their lifespan is shorter.

I only buy original Freightliner Original shocks. They are oil and never had issues with them. Don't use Monroe or Gabriel. Both are cheap quality.

Shouldn't you use a hydraulic shock not a gas shock
i think its just what works for the person driving the truck,i like oil shocks,but hydraulic shocks are cool to,just never used them
