The legend stated that the Atreides family came from a noble family that originated in Greece on Earth, and that they rose to prominence during the Butlerian Jihad. House Atreides specifically claimed descent from King Agamemnon, a son of Atreus, in Greek mythology.
What happened to Caladan? Does anyone of The Dune written books explain what happened to the Atriedes home planet after they were almost wiped out by the Harkonnen?
Nobody really knows what happened to Vorian, he just disappears. He was practically immortal because of the treatment that Agamemnon (his father) gave to him. He aged but pretty slowly; He could of lingered around for a thousand years or so, gradually nudging his family line. A great topic might be how Vorian had children/ grandchildren in the Suk school and The Guild. I would like to know more about the relationship that the Atreides had with house Versius (IX).
In Frank Herbert's (not his son), it was mentioned that House Atreides is the successor of House Atreus from Greek Mythology and ancient history. Unfortunately, it was a cursed house as members such as the Greek King Agamemnon of Mycenae (Iliad) was murdered by his wife and her lover. Agamemnon's son Orestes took revenge and murdered his mother and her lover. For matricide, Orestes was cursed by the gods. In some versions of the story, nothing happened to him and in others he was acquitted by the goddess Athena. In the Dune series, Paul and his children were cursed. The God Emperor's Golden Path was to break the curse and to allow humanity to survive/evolve, unfortunately it wasn't peaceful as the Honored Matres (remnants of the Fish Speakers, Bene Gesserit, and Tleilaxu females) from the Scattering wreaked havoc. It's interesting that the Hawk symbol was used in Dune when the traditional symbol of House Atreus and Mycenae were a pair of Lionesses. The Lions Gate is a famous landmark as it was set at the main entrance of the royal House Atreus citadel at Mycenae. Around 1250 BC, European lions were common in Greece. And to add another twist, the descendants of House Atreus and future House Atreides are living in Greece today. When the DNA of Cheddar Man who died 9,000 years ago in what is now England was sequenced, his descendants were found living in the area.
Orestes murdered his mother and was subsequently punished by the gods for matricide. The unrelated mythological figure who married his mother and had children with her, was Oedipus.
Fun fact, the actual Atreus slaughtered, cooked and fed his nephews to his brother, Thyestes. This after their grandfather, Tantalus, killed and fed their father to the gods as tribute. That's just a drop in the bucket of weird Greek stuff. I'm not sure who is least impressed: Dune fans by the myths/tragedies or classicists by the Dune stuff.
I know very little about Dune. Watched the movie and liked it! I was confused by the bulls head that they brought with them to Arakkis. How interesting!
“ During this time, Paul’s enemies continued to plot against him leading to the poisoning and death of Chani.” Huh? Didn’t Chani die in childbirth, after she switched to a Fremen diet to get pregnant and Irulan could no longer sipke her food with contraceptive?
Yes but the years of absorbing the contraceptives left her body unable to survive the birth of her children as her body exhausts itself to carry on the pregnancy
In Greek legend the sons of Atreus brought the Hellenes to Greece. They are the 'Atreides'. Since Greek civilisation is considered the oldest in Europe, its Frank Herbert's way of marking the lineage of Paul's family.
Thank-you for another excellent upload. As a lifelong Dune fan I have relished every novel in the Frank Herbert series. I genuinely enjoyed your précis of the main books up to God Emperor of Dune. Take care & stay safe. 🏜🪱🐉👍🏼📚
This thought is kind of related. I think that they used the word cursade instead of jihad in the trailer/movie because Paul is referring to the campaign against his family.
The Golden Path throws a series of philosophical, moral, and ethical questions and debates, absolutely immense and complex. Maybe we can relate, due the current estate of things, and how the elites are socially engineering the population. If someone has read the Rockefeller biography, he said some things...
None of the prequel information was written by Frank, he did write extensive notes which he intended to create a prequel series, but died before he could write it, his son and a collaborator, collected and wrote the 3 prequel novels, they are all brilliant, and i feel are as good as, if not even better than the original dune series.
The ancestors of the Atriedes was actually a high ranking Sadukar general who got his own planet to rule after subsequent victories and him being honourable
The WORM transformed Dune from desert to a more hospital planet Arrakis. When the WORM was assassinated and dissolved into a river the releasing the sand trout that transformed Arrakis back to the desert planet. Again, the LIVING WORM transformed a desert into a green vegetative planet and his DEATH began the transformation back into a desert.
I thought that Leto II continued with the Fremen terraforming making Arrakis a garden with the exception of a large desert area that he kept for himself. The world only started to revert to a desert after his death, which unleashed countless sandtrout and thereby returned both the desert and the worms to Dune.

@@Kenshin1549 You're right. My bad. Corrected.
@@Kenshin1549 He gets put on trial and pardoned. The "curse" is lifted, though if what happens in Dune is an indication it comes back.
leto did terraform arrakis, then when he died, the sandtrout in his body where unleashed, desertifying the planet once more.
For me it's the interplay & bond between Duke Leto & Gurney Halleck. It comes down to the simple issuance & return of respect.
Got me binge watching this with a Dune Encyclopedia in my hand. Still solid!
I know very little about Dune. Watched the movie and liked it! I was confused by the bulls head that they brought with them to Arakkis. How interesting!
You are "the voice"! Thanks for your content! I like the way you break down the houses, politics, and intrigue of Dune, thanks!
🙏 💙
Let's find out more about the "Old Duke Paul"!! 🤠👍
The Atreides house falls too. It falls after the Harkonnen and Corrino houses but it also falls.
“ During this time, Paul’s enemies continued to plot against him leading to the poisoning and death of Chani.” Huh? Didn’t Chani die in childbirth, after she switched to a Fremen diet to get pregnant and Irulan could no longer sipke her food with contraceptive?
Yep!
The contraceptives ensured that if she ended up giving birth after getting off them, she'd die.
Yes but the years of absorbing the contraceptives left her body unable to survive the birth of her children as her body exhausts itself to carry on the pregnancy
I always here how popular they were with other houses. None of the books show this in anyway
holy hell. If Kyle Malachlan had cameoed as Count Fenrig I would have soiled myself. great content as always.
You have an excellent voice for narration. Your voice has excellent timber and cadence. You have a bright future in this discipline.
Keep up the great work with the Dune videos!
Excellent, please expand the story out line to include prequels and out to Chapterhouse and beyond
Your the best. Now im ready to watch the movie after going through your DUNE playlist. Thank You.
This is some complicated lore. But I love learning about it.
The books all paint to a tragedy of a house that would perrish just being a great house or perish after it saves humanity.
I like this lady's voice. It's soothing. It isn't annoying. Good voice.
I've been binging your videos,I can't get enough
You know he is a villain when the actor portraying him also starred as Bluto
Such a wonderful actor, and wonderful person, he was though. Shame he died so young.
Awesome video! Thoroughly explained the lore!
In Greek legend the sons of Atreus brought the Hellenes to Greece. They are the 'Atreides'. Since Greek civilisation is considered the oldest in Europe, its Frank Herbert's way of marking the lineage of Paul's family.
Great overview of House Atreides (as always)....Thank You.
Your videos are better than their end product!
Doc Sloan's channel has a great vid on the Greek mythos roots of the curse of house Atraides.
Amazing! This was so awesome to hear
Thanks guys . Great subject. The subject really
Great video as always, Cookies :)
Thank-you for another excellent upload. As a lifelong Dune fan I have relished every novel in the Frank Herbert series. I only sampled a few chapters from the expanded universe and found it wasn’t to my tastes but I have enjoyed the video interpretations and even played the video game. I genuinely enjoyed your précis of the main books up to God Emperor of Dune. Take care & stay safe. 🏜🪱🐉👍🏼📚
This is why you don't let Kevin J Anderson anywhere near your franchise.
It's going to be very interesting how they do these films and I can't wait to see him.
With profound physical and mental powers and a flair for politics, the Bene Gesserit needed a Oedipus complex left unfulfilled.
This thought is kind of related.
I think that they used the word cursade instead of jihad in the trailer/movie because Paul is referring to the campaign against his family.
Your scripts (the narration) sounds very polished, like a team with some older writers did the editing. May I ask, who is that?
7:56 Love that still.
The Golden Path throws a series of philosophical, moral, and ethical questions and debates, absolutely immense and complex. Maybe we can relate, due the current estate of things, and how the elites are socially engineering the population. If someone has read the Rockefeller biography, he said some things...
Wow. I had no idea House Atreides was that sweeping and epic. Frank Herbert was both brilliant and cynical, I guess.
None of the prequel information was written by Frank, he did write extensive notes which he intended to create a prequel series, but died before he could write it, his son and a collaborator, collected and wrote the 3 prequel novels, they are all brilliant, and i feel are as good as, if not even better than the original dune series.
The end of House Atriedes strikes me as the comfort of a cool, crisp fall day.
The amount of ads on this 8 min video is insane
You always do a Great Job. Thank you
Sounds like This saga really gets out of control. I’ll be satisfied with the Movies stopping at book 1
There's bound to be some changes, Dune was far from the perfect saga. In fact certain portions felt forced. Lets see where the movies takes us
ya he is planing on going past book 1
Great info, beautiful voice 😍 subbed
love your narration.
Just think what the Bene Gesserit could have done with crisper cass-9 gene editing ,they could have had a Kwisatz Haderach in just a few years
Great video! 👌 thanks
But why keep the hiphop melody/tune at the beginning of every video?
Shes back boys!!
People watch Dune TV series.
Released early 2000's
thank you for the video. enjoyed your commentary.
Thanks, trying to understand these books!
Wish I'd heard all this before reading the books. Sometimes being lost can be fun... sometimes.
The ancestors of the Atriedes was actually a high ranking Sadukar general who got his own planet to rule after subsequent victories and him being honourable
It was Letos death (GE) that caused Arrakis to turn back into a desert planet with the release of the sandworms from his body wasnt it?
The WORM transformed Dune from desert to a more hospital planet Arrakis. When the WORM was assassinated and dissolved into a river the releasing the sand trout that transformed Arrakis back to the desert planet. Again, the LIVING WORM transformed a desert into a green vegetative planet and his DEATH began the transformation back into a desert.
Yes but Leto II did smash the water qanats to reverse the fremen's terraforming process and delay the extinction of the worms for a time.
@@NerdCookies Ah, you're focusing on a couple years of the devil and ignoring 3500 years of The Worm.
Solid video Ty.
Since I’ve only ever seen the recent movie, I’m gonna have to stop at 8:04… Great video tho 👍
I thought that Leto II continued with the Fremen terraforming making Arrakis a garden with the exception of a large desert area that he kept for himself. The world only started to revert to a desert after his death, which unleashed countless sandtrout and thereby returned both the desert and the worms to Dune.
He did. He had his little mini dessert that's it...rest of Rakis was covered
That is all interesting but I assume you have a battle pug video up coming due to the lack of reference here!😉
Your House either dies a heroic House or lives long enough to become the Villains
