The Disturbing Details About the Catholic Church's Abuse Scandal

As you may have heard, a Pennsylvania grand jury recently released a report about the child sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church. They only looked at 6 of the 8 dioceses in the state and still produced a report that was more than 1300 pages long and implicated more then 300 priests and bishops and other Catholic leaders.
Many of them are dead. Some of the stories were heavily redacted because the priests are alive and haven’t been charged with a crime. In some cases, the statute of limitations has long expired. But this was always about documenting the abuses more than anything.
When you read this report and realize it’s just one group of priests in one state, you have to wonder what the stories would look like if a similar document was produced across the country, if not the world.
And I want to tell you some of what they found. Not because it's disturbing -- and it's really disturbing -- but because this stuff had been going on for decades. The Church knew about it. They covered it up. They transferred priests to different parishes. They told families they would take care of the problem and never did.
If you are giving money to the Catholic Church, or you attend Mass, or you even call yourself a Catholic at this point, you should know what it is you're supporting.
Here's just a sampling. And if this is too much to take, click away now. This is your warning.
One priest fondled at least 12 different boys by saying he was just showing them “how to check for cancer.”
One priest raped an underage girl, got her pregnant, then paid for her abortion. His Bishop later wrote in a letter, “This is a very difficult time in your life, and I realize how upset you are. I too share your grief.” That letter was addressed to the priest, not his victim.
One priest admitted to molesting approximately 35 boys because sex with girls was “sinful” but raping boys didn’t violate them.
One priest tried having sex with a 17-year-old at a high school he worked at by saying God wanted them to express love for each other that way. When she said God would punish them, he told her, “there is no Hell.”
One priest forced a nine-year-old boy to give him a blowjob, then washed his mouth out with holy water “to purify him.”
There was a priest who dragged a child across a room by his underwear and beat him with a metal cross. He eventually quit the priesthood… but not before receiving a letter of recommendation from the Church for his new job… at Disney World.
One priest molested a 12-year-old boy. That victim is 83 now, and he said he's fought in wars, but because of what that priest did to him, he could never hug or kiss his own children, who were boys. He can’t shake hands with men to this day. He can’t even see male doctors or dentists.
One priest was known to take pictures in a boys’ locker room and maintained a book of “crotch shots.”
One priest fondled a boy and stuck his finger up the kid's ass. Then he said to the boy that if their secret ever got out, the child and his mother would both burn in hell. Then he gave the boy a nickel.

If this had been revealed about a chain of health clubs (for example), every single branch would be shut down immediately, and there would be dozens (if not hundreds) of people in jail tonight. But, since they can hide behind the cover of religion, people will actually make excuses about it.
And continue to give them money. For nothing. Just to support the pedophiles. At least at the health club, you get to use the equipment in exchange for your payment. These people just hand over financial support to pedos... disgusting.

This makes me very happy to be atheist and very sad for those children that went through that.
Some of us wake up. My religious life experience was hell and now I'm not so young which leaves me incredibly angry knowing I could have done so much more and been so much happier if I was allowed.
I was in Basel airport this september to take a pee and my door was locked and than i realised i am being watched by priest i was really scared he was about to rape me but i guess i was lucky still the look on his face was disturbing.

Your the reason why im proud not to be an atheist. The fact and only fact because child abuse is a reason not to be a Catholic is such a pedi reason. I argued with my cathlioc friend about this and he literally said "it doesn't affect me so I don't care" I almost beat the fuck out of him and this was at school.
Im not one that doesnt respect religion, I just dont care for the way that religion is misused to control people. I also extremely dislike the hypocrisy of how religious people will shun things such as the LGBT community or shun those with different religion or even just how someone looks! And then they are really the ones who have the skeletons in their closet. Religion is the cause of man's dissolving evolution. Not all religious people are bad, but i cant say that beleiveing in an invisble man in the sky is very intelligent, as well as using it as an excuse to rape kids. I highly agree with you sir or maam. Religion in of itself is not a bad thing... Its more of when others abuse it for their own ends that it becomes a problem... Like it did here where Pedophiles used the fact that kids go to Roman Catholic church and have contact with the priests to abuse these poor poor kids... @@blackbird7781 thank you. It hard to be an atheist in my family because my grandparents on both sides are Christian, my dad is Christian and my step mom is catholic. When I was 7 and my brother was 5 my mom became an atheist and so did we.
My dad would still make us go to church and it was the worst. The church we went to had specific all the parents/adults go to this big room with inclined seats like a place a concert could be help (but much smaller) and the kids would have these rooms that had age ranges (6-9 and 10-14.) kids 5 and younger would go to this daycare type place, and teens 15 or older would be where the rest of the adults were. I never went because I was 6 or 7 I think when we started going to this chruch. Anyway, they tried to make church fun. They made us stand up and dance to terribly loud Jesus music. I got fed up with having to go so when the told us to stand up and dance, I'd sit down and put my hood up. When the other children asked why I wouldn't stand up I'd tell them I didn't believe in god and I didn't want to be brainwashed. When the preachers would ask what's wrong I'd ignore them because if I told them what I told the other kids they would tell my dad and I would get in trouble.
Whne we were older i faked my age so me and my brother could stay in the same room(6-9). My brother somewhat liked church, especially because he got to stand up and dance to terribly loud Jesus music and he had friends there. I would always urge him to sit down but he wouldn't.
Now my dad pretty much accepts our disbelief in the Lord above. One time though when I was visiting his parents, my Nana made us pray over our hamburger and hot dog. Something that was clearly not something to thank god for. It's not even healthy food, what would I pray for anyway? We both refused for like 10 minutes and by that time our food was cold. My dad pulled us as side and told us to just close our eyes and pretend while my Nana thought he was disciplining us. We closed our eyes for about 3 seconds and then my Nana said it wasn't long enough for a real payer. So we literally spent 2 or 3 more minutes closing our eyes off and on pretending to pray. After we ate I called mom and she was upset that dad made us lie, because lying wasn't any better than praying when you don't believe.
When I visit my mom's parents, I always get into arguments with my cousins about God which is frustrating because my oldest cousin is 8 now and I'm 13, and he doesn't know how to make a strong argument. His comebacks were "well, you're wrong."
The bright side is, we don't have to go to church anymore I guess.
Yea, the trick is to never argue about religion, because you're always correct against a religious believer, they are generally incompetent in the area and will never generate a valid argument, but if someone is willing to discuss it(very rare) then it is worth doing. (I'm 14 so I'm a similar age)

Have you ever looked at news outlets? There is still so much good "press" about the Catholic Church - that is REALLY disturbing! No matter what they do, they end up on their feet, having many more lives than the proverbial cat. There is a huge pro-religion bias in the media.
The church is very advertiser friendly, trust me. You can sell tap water with a paper that says 'Holy Water' and people will buy enough to pour on an entire house!

Seecooty I think Mightly Owl was saying that when a priest reported one of his parishioners for murder, the church fired the priest. The point is that when a priest does something sick and unlawful (rape or fondling), the church protects them, but when a priest does something actually moral (reporting a crime), the church fires them. What kind of organization would be so protective of perverts and yet abandon someone when they did something to protect their community (getting a criminal locked up)?

While on his tour in Ireland the Pope asked God for forgiveness, but hasn't issued ant sort of apology to the victims as a whole. The church doesn't care about them, they're just concerned they were caught...again. Fortunately there were some protesters out there, so there is some vocal resistance to the face of the church itself.
The church still covers things up.

I wonder how much the actual bit that they were catholic priests had to do with their mental state. In fact to my experience they are actually worse people and I have attributed that to the oppression they submit themselves to. They actually go against human nature in so many levels. You're wrong about nobody imagining this scandal. I think you are still drastically underestimating what is going on. I think you could almost say that the real first commandment of christianity is something like, "sex is evil, so don't even talk about it." That has resulted in christians getting very good at having sex, but not talking about it. Because that was the way for them to procreate for ~2000 years. So what has come out in Boston and Pennsylvania is only a portion of what was going on in those locations, it has been going on all over the world for the history of christianity.

Not only the Catholics, look up the Children of God cult. The Catholics have simply been at it longer and are more experienced at covering it up or excusing it. Look up the old practice of castrati choir boys or the Renaissance Popes and Cardinals with multiple "nieces" and "nephews".

Years ago i pointed out to a friend that were the catholic church, say, a daycare business, with branches all over the country in different states, and that all this covering up and transferring of offenders was taking place, and that all this was found out, that the authorities would have cracked down on them, seize all their assets and lock up and try every last one for their part in this, that they would be out of business a long time ago...
...but religious organizations gets paid so much deference, and that deference is what allowed them to continue to hurt so many children.
If you know that someone has committed a crime and yet don't report it, then aren't you guilty of a criminal offence? And yet _in not one single case_ did the Catholic Church report a priest guilty of child abuse to the police. If I hadn't given up Catholicism many years ago the Catholic Church's abuse of children and their condoning of it would certainly have made me. Have nothing to do with the Catholic Church.

America seems to be "just discovering" all this abuse, Australia's had a Royal Commission on this subject about 5 years ago and we've noted an archbishop(Philip Wilson) convicted on concealing these crimes, and George Pell, an Australian cardinal currently facing court for a similar crime and also partaking in the crimes himself(allegedly). This is NOT news to us Australians and the catholic church is far and away the worst offender, and yet they continue to seek the right to do the same thing with impunity.

The rest of the world seems to not care about it, and not report about it. Instead, I get Neil Degrasse Tyson talking about how "I don't call myself an atheist" because he's afraid of being associated with a few antagonistic personalities on the internet.

this is why religion is something you can't find peace.. now I know that it is the best to have less faith or becoming an Atheist. Even the Bible itself, I can't completely tell it is real cuz it's like it is fictional. Religion is just a human made belief providing inadequate amount of evidences.

Australia has just had a royal commission into this exact behaviour, mind you when Tony Abbott got voted in he tried to Nerf the whole thing, after all he is great friends with Cardinal Pell who is currently undergoing trial for child abuse here. The list of recommendations is long, and now many states have implemented a law which included priests in the required to report laws (they were previously excluded). The South Australian Arch Bishop declared his priests would go to jail before reporting child abuse. Other Arch Bishops have agreed in principal but no reports have been handed in yet to my knowledge. The abuse is systemic, the cover up massive and continuing, and frankly if this were any other organisation than a church the punishment would be swift and unforgiving. Shit if a group of atheists were caught doing this kind of thing you can bet the politicians would do more than make a list of recommendations. It is well past time for religion to stop getting special treatment. I never thought of myself as anti-theist but now, now it is the only term that fits.

My broth. Was raped by a priest in early 70s. My sister and my brother waited till my mom died to say anything for respect for her, anyway Went to the archbishop in 2009 they said the priest was still working. They did nothing. No letters were sent back to my brother no apologies. My brother is an alcoholic.
This is really sad and I hope your brother finds strength to continue on with his life and not let that one awful event be his life.

I could not listen to the whole thing. You were right- this is disturbing. I think religion in general is based on sexual fantasy (the Garden of Eden is a sexual fantasy- womb/garden, serpent/penis) and that is why religion attracts so much sexual scandal. I really wish there was no such thing as religion. The pain of trying to be an honest person in a deceitful society is a lot for one person to bear in isolation. I think it's just that in reality the rulers can't really enforce all their laws and punish all the crimes that are comitted so they created a bogus "forgiveness doctrine" so it becomes the burden of some people to do all the "forgiving."

Priests should get a wife
My entire immediate and extended family is catholic except me. They act ashamed of who I am for not believing and I always disapproved of their beliefs, but I don't say anything out of respect. This makes me ashamed of their ignorance, but not of them. They are a few of many smart people believing silly things. These victims will remind me every day to speak up and stand up to my family.

I don't think I've ever seen you this upset. As one should be about this. You can find multiple documentaries of grown people talking about their experiences and how it effected them as teens and in their adult life.
I was hoping someone would address this nightmare. I live in the area where this is happening and the reports are beyond atrocious. This is making the Penn State scandal from a few years ago look like a non-moving traffic violation (which it isn't) and that's just disgusting.
Some of these awful human beings marked their victims by giving them gold crosses. The young boys wearing the crosses were groomed for abuse.
One of the most vile and idiotic things a Catholic bishop said was:
"I'm concerned about our people that they may be scandalized and tempted to turn their backs on God,” (Bishop David) Zubik told KDKA.
Yeah, good thing you're not, you know, concerned about the victims, they'll be ok, huh? Yeah, the important thing here is that the church doesn't lose parishioners/money because their as of yet unproven, invisible, asinine, immoral thug of a deity who, if he did exist, allowed these atrocities to happen, and did sweet fuck-all to prevent it. Yeah, let's worry about people turning away from god. How about worrying about the victims and their families and trying everything in your power to help the healing to begin and insure that *nothing* like this *ever* happens again, you asshat.
