Thanks for watching, Steph! Someone today told me he hopes to be up there in snow next month... I'll never forget it. Preferable to the Snowdon Horseshoe. ;-) I'd like to do it again but maybe Tryfan and then the Glyders separately - it was a long day! All the best.
Really excellent Olly! Congratulations on gaining the ‘freedom of Tryfan’! Leap of faith and a half:))) you captured those mountains a treat with some stunning and dramatic shots 👍👍👍 awesome walk...scramble....hike....climb! Very nice 🙂🤙
Thanks very much indeed, Gill. I'm glad you enjoyed it. :-) I was tempted to try and divide this in to two videos as I wanted to keep it below ten minutes... But, it didn't make sense to me, to separate the story and achievement just like that. Our first time scrambling and a very memorable experience. Terrifying on at least one occasion! ;-) In practise, that leap is just one big step... When you're up there, it looks a lot worse than it is. Have you been up Tryfan or on to the Glyders? All the best to you.
For a first time scramble you all looked confident, well done. I went up Tryfan a few years ago, misty day so didn’t get the views and didn’t have the courage for the leap of faith. Hats off to you Olly.
WOW Olly what can I say? Not one single word was spoken, nothing needed to be said, the film said it all. I’ve often camped at Gwen Gof Uchaf the campsite below Tryfan and gazed up upon that mountain wishing that I had the skill and confidence to climb the north face. You took me on that journey and I thank you so much. Your mountaineering skills are brilliant and you only seem to be very young, where did you learn those skills? Yes this film is worthy of 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks very much, Mike! :-) I'm often worried about the fact that I rarely talk in my videos as I think it can add something extra. But I'm pleased to see this has been well received and that the imagery tells the story well. I don't know about our mountaineering skills but it was a collective effort in navigation and guidance. We had two climbers in our group, who basically led the way with the scrambles and we also had a Cicerone guidebook to follow. Most of the scrambling was Grade 1 at best, with only one section a potential Grade 2. Two of us are in our 30s; two in their 20s. I'm the only one who's done a map reading and navigation course (with Andy Cummings of Manzoku, in the Brecon Beacons last year). Thanks also for the five stars. I hope you do give the north face a go. If you take your time to assess what lies ahead, I believe it's easier to determine which sections you can and can not climb. This was my first time scrambling. I'd love to do Tryfan again but on its own. Adding the Glyders to our day was almost a bit much. All the very best. :-)
Thank you, Simon. :-) Sharing this adventure with the three others definitely made it all the more worthwhile. I'm happy to hike alone but this was also something special. All the best.
Wow that looked a real scramble going up Olly. I was also on the edge of my seat watching you jump those rocks! :) I walked up to the Glyders about 6 years ago with a group of people from work, but we walked from Capel Curig, came down the steep path just to the east of Tryfan and followed the track running parallel with the road back to Capel Curig. I've got a photo of us on the cantilever stone too. It was definitely the hardest walk I've ever done. Yours looked a lot harder as you climbed Tryfan as well. Nice one Olly, a great achievement. Cheers, Patrick :)
Thank you, Patrick. :-) From where I sat and watched Dave do 'the step' (he even comments, 'it's a step!'), it didn't look too bad. One you're up there, the gap widens and there's nothing but rock far beneath you and all around! It's strange how the mind's perception suddenly changes... It really is just one big step and less of a jump. ;-) I do think it's more perilous to do it in the opposite direction. I'm pleased to hear you've been up on to the Glyders. I don't think I was expecting us to scramble up the whole thing. I was aware of the scree path going up the side from one of Adam Radford's videos. Some sections were near-vertical, as you can see. Great fun, provided you don't look down or let go!! We're talking about doing Ben Nevis via the CMD Arete next summer but it's tame by comparison to this, I reckon. I'd like to do Tryfan again on its own. Maybe the Glyders as part of another route. Much to explore across Snowdonia! Thanks again and all the best to you. :-)
Superb Olly and all the more enjoyable and memorable when shared with other like minded souls. I thought that you were going to triple salchow your way off that pillar lol. The mountains have really captured my heart. Inspiring Olly. I must give a scramble up Tryfan a go. Paul :)
Haha, I had thought about jumping back across to the other one but it just seemed like an extra step too far! Tryfan is an awesome mountain. We we were there on a Sunday in July and it was anything but crowded. Plenty of places to park as well. Loads of mountains to explore in that area (I'd love to visit the Carneddau next). It is probably my favourite mountain experience. I enjoyed the scrambling and it wouldn't have been the same by myself. Crib Goch or not, I think Tryfan is essential. More so than Snowdon! ;-) All the best and thanks once more for watching.
@@WalksWithOlly Maybe make that leap next time Olly lol and yes Tryfan looks to be a must visit for sure. It is good to hear of your future plans and targets also :)
Great stuff Olly, I really need to get down to Wales and do more climbing there. I was supposed to do Snowdon again in a couple of weeks but it has been postponed till next year, so nice to see the views I will be missing from Snowdonia. Looked a great nice group you were with, always makes a great days climbing more special. Cheers Alan
Thank you, Alan. :-) Sorry to hear that your own trip has been postponed. I hope the weather is kind for when you do get there. It was our first time away as such a small group and it definitely worked very well. It would've been quite different doing it solo. All the best.
Great video Olly, not been up Tryfan but on my list of things to visit, looks like there is plenty of scrambling to do!. Not sure I would venture on that Cannon stone though. Thanks for sharing my friend. ATB. Jim
Thanks very much, Jim. :-) To anyone who enjoys scrambling, I'd highly recommend Tryfan. It has to be one of the best experiences in the UK and it's impossible to climb without using your hands. Hehe, the cannon stone was something - we all crawled our way up along and back down. The stone was very well 'polished' as it's so frequently climbed and visited. Thanks again for watching. I appreciate your comment and hope to have my Snowdon video up this weekend. All the best.
Wow Olly - a fantastic video - some absolutely stunning views (that we missed out on). It really is a sinister rocky looking monster of a mountain range, but still one of our favourites. You made me want to get back there! And well done on the Adam and Eve leap! I chickened out - but I'm almost of the mind to give these things that scare me a try.... almost... lol. Anyway, well done again, and thanks for sharing!
Thanks very much, Trev! We were quite fortunate with the views. I don't remember the weather forecast being too great (you can see the wind speeding over the Glyders) and Snowdon's summit was surrounded by cloud. I do hope you get another chance to tackle it from the north. I'd love to do it again but on its own. Adam and Eve: from the first angle and Dave's jump, it doesn't look that bad. But the angle of my jump is a better representation of how it looks from on top. In practise (and you can almost hear Dave say this on his leap), 'it's a step'. Best attempted going left to right, I think, as the one on the left (Adam?) is much narrower and more slanted. Once I was up there, honestly, I was questioning WTF I was about to do!! ;-) All the best. I'm hoping to have my video of the Snowdon Horseshoe and Crib Goch up next weekend.
You had to go steady underfoot the whole day for views like that Olly. One slip and the views are gone. Some incredible rock formations up there as well as good company. All; the best to you. Mark
Thank you, Mark. It was definitely a day for careful foot placement. Most mountain climbs require less concentration, I think. This was all about 'Where can I put my foot? What happens if I move my left hand up there?'. My first time scrambling and a great experience. I still think the biggest challenge of Tryfan's north face was the navigation, which we tackled collectively. Although there are higher grades of scrambling available, for those who really like a challenge! There was a gully we followed up on to Glyder Fach (I think I captured it well) where we were climbing near-vertical and with a perilous drop below... That was, by far, the scariest experience of the day, for me. I think the rush of that moment outweighed any fear, for me. Have you done much scrambling in Snowdonia, Mark? I'm hoping to have my Snowdon video ready for next week. All the best for now.
A pleasure Olly, thanks for the run down of the day. It sounded amazing with loads of different ups and downs of adrenaline. That's what a day out like this is about. I have scrambled in life always going up gullies and climbing trees. Paul and I would get to the tops the trees and sway back and forth - again adrenaline. But a climb like this not really Olly. Will do one day. Well, I look forward to the Snowdonia video. I was only thinking this week that I'm so glad I climbed that with Paul. Really happy with that it's a fabulous mountain. All the best for the weekend.
Thank you, Mick and thank you for watching! Tryfan is definitely worth doing and, as long as you have a head for heights, I'm sure you'll find your passage up on to the Glyders. If only dogs could scramble, eh? I wish you all the best with your adventure and thank you for leaving a comment.
Thank you, Rob. :-) This was in Snowdonia, North Wales. The first mountain we climbed was Tryfan. Then Glyder Fach and Glyder Fawr. I hope you are doing well.
Absolutely love this walk, one of my favourites in Snowdonia!
