LOST on TRYFAN - A DANGEROUS MOUNTAIN HIKING ADVENTURE!

  • Yep, we got LOST in the MIST on TRYFAN one of Snowdonia's MOST DANGEROUS MOUNTAINS! We could have DIED Up There!
Summit or Nothing Ep 6 - Hiking On Tryfan - Lost and Found in Snowdonia.
It's Summit or Nothing's second Mountain, and its a big one. TRYFAN is a dominating Dragons Back of a Mountain, its three summits each as hazardous as the next. And we attempt it in thick fog, with absolutely no previous mountain experience. Looking back, its a wonder we ever made it off that mountain alive.
As the weather rolls in, will it be a Summit or a Nothing for our lads?
    Thanks a lot!
The book used in this video is Britains Highest Mountain Walks - if you are interested in your own copy then here's a link - amzn.to/2tUNg6t
One of the few mountains in the UK where the summit cannot be reached on foot alone, Tryfan stands just shy of 1000 metres and is considered by many a great challenging peak to conquer.

I climbed Tryfan in my 20's (now mid 70's) with a group which split up leaving me and one other. Climbed high all in mist and thought we were in serious danger at one point. Not so well equipped as yourselves but knew we'd climbed in a circle when I passed the same flattened tube of condensed milk for the second time. It was great to watch your experience and I understand totally your effort and emotions. Well done you reached Adam and Eve - I didn't get to see them. Best bit for me in the 60's was the walk along the road after the climb to the pub (a few miles) to meet the group - thought of nothing other than a pint of shandy. Thanks for this it brought back happy times. WELL done both of you. Your pictures were true to my experience. Those who haven't done it won't get it! Jackie, Glasgow

Yea, i said to Nath Im sure we werent the first to get lost on here, but boy, did it frustrate us. Alls well that ends well though, eh. I didnt think pint, when I got off, I just thought home, and we literally drove straight back to Cornwall having just got down. Anyway, thanks for watching. Got some more mountains coming up, as we prepare to visit the lake district next. Hope you care to join us. Thanks for watching

Great to see Tryfan in the mist. I can remember on 3 fingers the times I have been up Trif in the sun. You both got to see her at her finest. Good to see you mentioned the helper who looks at his map constantly, when you're in that sort of environment and conditions, you really need to keep a very close eye on your map and compass. It's not uncommon to take compass bearings for legs of 50m or less.
Well done to Nath for his Adam and Eve jump. You have the freedom of Tri-faen!

    • @SummitOrNothing

Did Tryfan in the mist just like you guys but in 1973…. Most memorable bit was a pub down the road in Bethesda.. the locals were all speaking English until you got near them when they immediately switched to Welsh.. It was a couple of years post decimalisation but the Landlord was still giving the price of beer in pounds, shillings, and pence.. I doubt much has changed since..

I really enjoyed your video and I'm glad that you got back safely. I was a bit worried for you about half way through. I found it quite an education as I was thinking about what I would do if in that situation. Maybe a bearing along the wall and the rock face and a bearing down the slope? I thought that I was getting better at keeping track of distance travelled but had a bit of an awakening on my last wild camp trip to the lakes.
I am more interested in tackling Tryfan now that I have seen your video. My mate wanted to take me up the north face in winter. Having seen the number of incidents involving mountain rescue on the north face I have decided that it's not something to be taken lightly. Especially in winter.

Great video (I’ve watched it a few times over lockdown) and congratulations on getting to 10,000 subscribers. I climbed Tryfan a few times from the campsite you showed. It is a difficult mountain to navigate as the paths seem to fade into the rest of the and become in distinct, worse in mist and cloud. I know you’ve started to use ViewRanger (as have I for the past 5/6 years) as a backup to paper. However, if your using paper OS maps as your primary, can I suggest ‘OS Locate’ it’s a simple app that gives your map grid reference in OS format to transfer or check against your estimated position. ‘Windy Maps’ is another new great app including free ViewRanger/OS style maps across the world with route planning and calculation, worth checking out. Cheers

I think I'll add Tryfan to the list guys, it actually looks a bit horrible, so, all the better. :). Liked the music on this one, Trev, loads of atmosphere.

The weather made it a bloody nightmare - tempers flared, we were exhausted, down in the dumps, but what an adventure. Loved it! Definitely, worth the look, we hope to get back again in better weather! Thanks for watching!

So glad the weather cleared for you, would have been devastating to have put all that hard work in and not benefited from those breath taking views! Climbed it the day after Boxing Day and it was sheet ice at the summit so we have Adam and Eve and miss this time!

I bet that was a bit dodgy. Yeah, it made our day to see what we were looking out across. By the time we got up the top we were done in. I hope to get back there on a clear day one day and make more of a walk of it. If we werent backtracking so much we would have done a different circular route I think. Thanks for watching Kayleigh!

2:40 Looks like a cheap compass - wouldn't trust my life to anything less than one of the top named brands, or one that says it has a jewelled bearing.

Would you recommend the Suunto M-3 Nh? I'm not sure if it has a jewelled bearing.

@@underabanner This Amazon listing says that the Suunto M3 has a jewelled bearing. One can never be 100 percent sure but I think all Silva and Suunto compasses do www.amazon.co.uk/SUUNTO-M-3-Nh-Compass-Black/dp/B010K8XX5A
